Austria is not just about impressive scenery, rich culture and excellent food. What makes Austria truly unique are its people.
Austrians live by the concept of Lebensgefühl: the willing and total involvement in life itself. Lebensgefühl can be felt in every moment, large or small. It’s the appealing laughter of a landlady during a chat in the morning or the jokes with a local guide. It’s the locals on the next table discussing the meaning of life until well after midnight. It’s the art of not taking life too seriously, something that the Austrians have mastered to perfection.
Lebensgefühl means everyone is welcome in Austria, and welcome to come just as they are. So get ready to be pleased by Austria and the Austrians this autumn and winter and experience Lebensgefühl firsthand!

Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.
“It’s not enough to be smart and hardworking. Students must also be able to understand and manage their emotions to succeed at school,” said Carolyn MacCann, lead author of the study. MacCann and her colleagues analyzed data from more than 160 studies, representing more than 42,000 students from 27 countries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age from primary school to college. The researchers found that students with higher EI tended to get higher grades and better achievement test scores than those with lower EI scores. This finding held true even when controlling for intelligence and personality factors. What was most surprising to the researchers was the association held despite different ages.
As for why EI can affect academic performance, MacCann believes a number of factors may come into play. “Students with higher EI may be better able to manage negative emotions, such as anxiety, boredom and disappointment, which can negatively affect academic performance,” she said. “Also, these students may be better able to manage the social world around them, forming better relationships with teachers, classmates and family, all of which are important to academic success.” Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.
However, MacCann cautions against widespread testing of students to identify and target those with low EI as it may stigmatize (给…… Instead, she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills. “Programs that integrate emotional skill development into the existing curriculum would be beneficial, as research suggests that training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists,” she said. “Increasing skills for everyone — not just those with low EI—would benefit everyone.”
24. What surprised the researchers most during MacCann’s study?
A. Intelligence mattered more than EI for academic success.
B. EI had an effect on learning for students of all ages.
C. College students benefited more from EI than pupils.
D. Personality affected academic performance greatly.
25. What can be a reason for the conclusion of MacCann’s study?
A. High-EI students hardly experience negative emotions.
B. High-EI students seldom develop social relationships.
C. High-EI students tend to easily focus on their study.
D. High-EI students have helpful skills for certain subjects.
26. What does MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Equipping teachers with emotional skills.
B. Designing tests to identify students with low EI.
C. Developing special programs for students with low EI.
D. Employing emotional specialists to give training to students.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Should EI be taught in school?
B. How can students develop high EI?
C. Students with high EI do better in school
D. Good students do better in managing emotions

Researchers believe they have found an unknown kind of whale in waters off Mexico's western coast. If others prove the finding, the new whale will be an important discovery among giant animals.
The team of researchers came upon three unusual whales while following a rare group of beaked whales(突吻鲸). The whales were near Mexico's distant San Benito Islands, about 500 km south of the U.S. border. Beaked whales usually avoid meeting humans.
Jay Barlow studies sea animals. He noted that it was a very unusual meeting. "It's very rare to even see a beaked whale, and to find a group of friendly beaked whales, it's even rarer," he said.
Barlow said he and other researchers did not realize they were seeing a possible new kind of whale until later. The group saw something different about the whales' teeth when they studied the photos they took of the animals. The underwater recordings of the whales' calls also suggested they were different from all the others.
The researchers are now waiting for test results on water they collected near the whales. There could be skin cells in the water from the whales. If so, they will examine the DNA to make sure whether the whales are a new species.
Though up to 5 meters long, the whales can be hard for scientists to see. That is because they usually swim and eat at depths of around 914 meters. They only come up at times for air. In the deep water, the animals can stay away from their main enemy-killer whales.
Barlow said that finding a new species is a rare event. His team has proof about the whales that looks like a new discovery. He said the DNA testing would help determine it and he hoped the whales could be determined as a new species. That would bring the number of known beaked whale species to 24.
28. What do the scientists say about the possible new species?
A. They are very fierce sea animals.
B. They frequently come up for air.
C. They belong to the beaked whale species.
D. They only live near Mexico's distant San Benito Islands.
29. Which part of the unusual whale differs from that of others?
A. Its ears. B. Its teeth.
C. Its eyes. D. Its mouth.
30. Why did the scientists study water they collected near the whales?
A. To get the whales' skin cells.
B. To study the quality of the water.
C. To learn about the whales' living habit.
D. To know what kind of food the whales eat.
31. What were the scientists eager to know?
A. The reliability of the DNA testing. B. The aim of the DNA testing.
C. The process of the DNA testing. D. The result of the DNA testing.

When we are healthy, breathing happens naturally and easily. Without much effort on our part, the human respiratory (呼吸的) system works hard. Experts say we take about 20, 000 breaths every day.
When you breathe deeply, the air coming in through your nose fully fills your lungs, and the lower belly (腹部) rises. Deep breathing may slow the heartbeat, lower blood pressure and lower stress. Deep breaths help your body fully exchange incoming oxygen with outgoing carbon dioxide.
However, many people do the opposite of deep breathing. They take short breaths and have shallow breathing. Experts call this “chest breathing”. Shallow breathing limits the expansion (扩张) of the diaphragm (隔膜) and its movement. The lowest part of the lungs does not get a full share of fresh air. This can make you feel short of breath and worried, or anxious.
Shallow breathing, over time, leaves old, unfresh air in the lungs. This leaves less room for the diaphragm to bring in fresh oxygen. And that means lower oxygen levels and less oxygen for exercise and activity.
Several health websites explain an easy deep breathing exercise. Find a place to lie down. Place one hand just below your ribs (肋骨). Take a slow, deep breath through your nose. Feel your hand go up. Your stomach should rise and expand. Now breathe out slowly through your mouth. Make sure to breathe out all the way. Feel your hand and stomach go down.
If done repeatedly, breathing exercises can help remove unfresh air from the lungs. This will increase oxygen levels and get the diaphragm to return to its job of helping you breathe. Deep breathing is a good way to reduce stress and relax.
Shortness of breath happens when you are worried, frightened, or are in poor physical shape. But it can also be a sign of health problems.
32. What is the harm of chest breathing?
A. It makes the body take in more oxygen.
B. It allows the diaphragm to move freely.
C. It speeds up the exchange of oxygen and CO₂.
D. It cuts down oxygen supply and brings discomfort.
33. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Benefits of deep breathing.
B. Problems caused by shallow breathing.
C. Steps to perform a deep breathing exercise.
D. Reasons why people feel short of breath.
34. Why might shortness of breath be a serious concern?
A. It can be a sign of an underlying health problem.
B. It always indicates someone is very frightened.
C. It proves the person is not breathing deeply enough.
D. It happens only to those in poor physical condition.
35. Which could be a suitable title for the text?
A. Shallow Breathing and Its Harms B. Deep Breathing: Benefits and Practice
C. How to Control Your Breathing Rate D. The Dangers of Shortness of Breath

SIM
If you have a cellphone, it is most likely to use a SIM card to connect to the network. ____40____, which is why SIM stands for “Subscriber Identity Module.” Since the SIM card holds specific information about the user, it provides a way for the network to distinguish individual subscribers.

One pleasant New-year morning, Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry. He wanted to be the first to wish a happy New Year to his family. He turned up at every door of the house, and shouted the words of “Happy New Year” in an excited voice. After a quick breakfast, he hopped along the street like a happy bird, greeted and repeated the words to those he met.
When he came back, his father gave him 50 dollars, saying he could buy whatever he had been wishing for. His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some interesting books that he had seen at the bookstore located near the river through the city. He thanked his father and danced out of the house again with a light heart, intending to buy those books.
As he ran down the street, he noticed a poor family, the father, the mother, and three children shivering with cold in the winter wind. “I wish you a happy New Year,” cried Edward, as he was happily passing on. The man took a look at the happy boy and shook his head sadly.
Edward stopped and said, “It seems that you do not belong to this country.” The man again shook his head, and a confused expression flashed over his face, for he could not understand or speak English.
But the poor man pointed to his dry mouth, and to the children with hungry looks, as if to say,
“These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.”
Edward quickly realized that these poor people were in distress (困境).

B 25. D 26. A 27. C

根据第三段中的“Finally, the skills required for EI, such as understanding human motivation and emotion, may overlap with (与……重叠) the skills required to master certain subjects, such as history and language, giving students an advantage in those subject areas, according to MacCann.”(最后,根据MacCann的说法,情商所需的技能,如理解人类动机和情绪,可能与掌握某些科目所需的技巧重叠,如历史和语言,使学生在这些科目领域具有优势。)
根据最后一段中的“she recommends interventions that involve the whole school, including additional teacher training and a focus on teacher well-being and emotional skills”(她建议采取涉及整个学校的干预措施,包括额外的教师培训和关注教师的幸福感和情感技能)以及“training works better when run by teachers rather than external specialists”(由教师而不是外部专家进行培训效果更好)可知,MacCann建议要培养教师的情商培养技能。故选A项。
通读全文,并根据第一段“Students who are better able to understand and manage their emotions effectively, a skill known as emotional intelligence (EI), do better at school than their less-skilled classmates, according to research published by the American Psychological Association.”(美国心理学会发表的一项研究表明,能够更好地理解和有效管理自己情绪的学生,即情商(EI),在学校的表现比那些情商较低的同学要好)可知,本文主要讲述了情商高的学生学业表现更好,故C项“高情商的学生在学校表现更好”作标题最为恰当。故选C项。

C 29. B 30. A 31. D

D 33. C 34. A 35. B
根据第三段中的“Shallow breathing limits the expansion (扩张) of the diaphragm (隔膜) and its movement. The lowest part of the lungs does not get a full share of fresh air. This can make you feel short of breath and worried, or anxious.(浅呼吸限制了隔膜的扩张及其运动。肺的最下部无法获得充足的新鲜空气。这会让你感到气短、担忧或焦虑)”和第四段中的“Shallow breathing, over time, leaves old, unfresh air in the lungs. Common Abbreviations and What They Mean
From informal texts to academic works, we rely on common abbreviations (缩写) everywhere. An abbreviation is “a shortened form of a written word or phrase used in place of the whole one.” ____36____.
Lb.
How did Lb. get to be the abbreviation for pound, a word that contains neither of those letters? It originates from Latin words called Libra pondo, meaning “a pound by weight.” Pondo became the English word pound, while the term Libra provided the origin for the Lb. abbreviation. ____37____.
A.m. and p.m.
____38____. Most people use “a.m.” and “p.m.” to refer to different times without knowing why. While a.m. stands for ante meridiem, or “before noon,” p.m. is short for post meridiem, meaning “after noon.” Post, meaning “after,” is a very familiar Latin loanword we use all the time.
____39____
When an ATM asks for your PIN, that means the machine needs a four number to identify your account. The three letters stand for “personal identification number.” A Scottish engineer named James Goodfellow contributed to this technological innovation. He received a patent for an automatic machine in 1966, which included a PIN pad.
SIM
If you have a cellphone, it is most likely to use a SIM card to connect to the network. ____40____, which is why SIM stands for “Subscriber Identity Module.” Since the SIM card holds specific information about the user, it provides a way for the network to distinguish individual subscribers.
A. PIN
B. ATM
C. But these cards also carry unique information about each user
D. The following are the most common abbreviations we use today
E. Here’s another common abbreviation example whose roots are in Latin
F. This is also why the abbreviation for British money “£” looks like an “L”
G. However, we usually don’t know the meaning of some common abbreviations
D 37. F 38. E 39. A 40. C
Lb.、a.m. and p.m.、PIN
上文“An abbreviation is ‘a shortened form of a written word or phrase used in place of the whole one.’ (缩写是‘书面单词或短语的简写形式,用以替代完整形式’。)” 给出了缩写的定义,下文则分别介绍了多个具体常见缩写的相关内容。D项“以下是我们如今最常用的一些缩写”承上启下,既承接上文的缩写定义,又自然引出下文对具体缩写的介绍,起到了总起下文的作用,符合语境。故选D。
【37题详解】
上文“It originates from Latin words called Libra pondo, meaning ‘a pound by weight’. Pondo became the English word pound, while the term Libra provided the origin for the Lb. abbreviation.
下文“Most people use ‘a.m.’ and ‘p.m.’ to refer to different times without knowing why. While a.m. stands for ante meridiem, or ‘before noon,’ p.m. is short for post meridiem, meaning ‘after noon.’ (大多数人用a.m.和p.m.表示不同的时间,却不知道其由来。a.m.是拉丁语ante meridiem的缩写,意思是‘中午之前’;p.m.是拉丁语post meridiem的缩写,意思是‘中午之后’。)”介绍了 a.m. 和 p.m. 和 p.m.
下文“When an ATM asks for your PIN, that means the machine needs a four number to identify your account. The three letters stand for ‘personal identification number.’ (当自动柜员机向你索要PIN码时,意味着这台机器需要一串四位数字来验证你的账户。这三个字母是个人识别号码的缩写。)”围绕缩写 PIN 的含义和用途展开介绍。A项 “PIN” 作为该部分的小标题,精准概括了下文的核心内容,统领全段。故选A。
上文“If you have a cellphone, it is most likely to use a SIM card to connect to the network. (如果你有手机,那么它很可能是通过SIM卡连接网络的。)”提及手机中的SIM卡,下文“which is why SIM stands for ‘Subscriber Identity Module.’ (这就是SIM卡代表用户识别模块缩写的原因。)”解释了 SIM 缩写的含义。C项“但这些卡片也包含每个用户的独有信息”承上启下,既承接上文的SIM卡话题,又为下文解释 SIM 的含义做铺垫,说明正是因为SIM卡包含用户独有信息,才会被称为用户识别模块,逻辑通顺。故选C。

Edward thought for a moment and then made a decision. He turned around, ran to the nearest grocery store, and spent all his 50 dollars on bread and milk. Rushing back, he handed the food to the poor father, whose eyes were filled with tears as he bowed repeatedly. The children eagerly took the food and ate greedily, their shivering bodies gradually calming down. Edward watched them with a smile, though he didn’t get the books he’d longed for.
When he returned home, his father stood by the door, noticing his empty hands. Edward told him the whole story — from the family shivering in the wind to their tears of thanks. Instead of being upset, his father patted his shoulder gently with a proud smile. “You’ve done the most meaningful thing today, my boy, and never stop helping those in need.” he said, his voice brimming with joy. Edward nodded firmly, realizing that true happiness lies not in getting what we want, but in giving what others need.
