I’m Kate. Like many people in the UK, I grew up with a very narrow understanding of health. If I felt anxious or tired, I just kept going. If I had a headache, I took painkillers. There was very little thought given to why symptoms appeared or how to live in a way that might prevent them from happening. It wasn’t until my early thirties, while working in a high-stress advertising job, that everything caught up with me. I was completely burnt out.
One of the most alarming symptoms I was experiencing at the time was unusual heartbeats — loud uneven throbs (跳动) that shook my chest every few minutes. I went to the hospital and was told doctors could do nothing, except to keep an eye on it in case it caused problems later in life. There was no mention of emotional tension. No questions about how I was dealing with stress. That was the moment I turned to acupuncture (针灸).
I didn’t know much about it, but something about it felt right. And that first treatment marked the beginning of a deep and lasting change. Through acupuncture treatments, I found a kind of calm I hadn’t experienced in years. My mind cleared, my body felt stronger, and those frightening heartbeats became less and less noticeable. I had discovered a whole new way of seeing health and life.
That experience sparked my interest. I began reading everything I could about acupuncture: not just the practical benefits, but the basic philosophy. I discovered that Chinese medicine is more of a way of understanding ourselves and the world. It teaches that our health isn’t something to hand over to someone else to fix. It’s something to respect and tend to every day, through our food, our emotional lives, our ability to respond to stress, and our relationship with nature and the seasons.
4. How did Kate treat health issues early on?
A. Ignoring the root causes. B. Taking painkillers regularly.
C. Stopping work when feeling tired. D. Keeping a healthy lifestyle.
5. What made Kate turn to acupuncture?
A. Her heartbeats becoming more frequent. B. Doctors’ advice to keep an eye on it.
C. Her high-stress advertising job. D. Doctors’ failure to address her stress.
6. What happened to Kate after her first acupuncture?
A. She lost trust in doctors. B. She loved reading acupuncture books.
C. She experienced inner peace. D. Her heartbeats returned to normal.
7. What does Kate think of Chinese medicine?
A. It tries to reveal mental factors. B. It offers a new way to understand life.
C. It works better than Western medicine. D. It requires daily food control.

A recent study examined how online images strengthen gender bias (偏见), even when written descriptions are more balanced. Researchers, led by Douglas Guilbeault, explored how gender bias is conveyed in images versus text and its impact on users.
The study analyzed nearly 350,000 Google Images showing men and women in various jobs and roles, then compared these to billions of words from in text. Both images and text showed biased associations, with women more often described in liberal arts roles and men in science and technology. However, the imbalance was “statistically more extreme” in images. For example, all images of software developers were male, while text descriptions included women. Compared to real-world workforce data, images overrepresented men, while text more often overrepresented women.
Researchers had volunteers search for 22 occupation. The study found that viewing images rather than text intensified participants’ gender biases, which persisted for days afterward.
A potential explanation is the complex algorithms (算法) that run search engines like Google Images. “Consistently, we find that the algorithm appears to be privileging male content.” The site may be holding a mirror to users’ attitude. “Google is just a system,” Guilbeault says, “reflecting what’s going on in other areas of the internet.” Also, images affect us differently than text. Images are particularly sticky in our mind, known as the picture-superiority effect, and more easily processed, remembered, and emotionally stirring than text.
As society shifts toward visual communication, Guilbeault warns that images, being a potent vehicle for stereotypes (刻板印象), may deepen biases unless new cultural rules intervene.
8. What did the researchers discover in the study?
A. The jobs taken by men and women were imbalanced.
B. Images showed a more extreme bias than text.
C. Men were doing a better job than women in images.
D. Gender bias in text had a greater influence on readers.
9. What can be inferred from Guilbeault’s words?
A. Images contain more detailed information than text.
B. People prefer images to written descriptions.
C. The engineers writing the algorithms are biased.
D. The result reflects people’s biases in real life.
10. The underline word potent in the last paragraph probably means_________.
A. weak B. powerful C. traditional D. rational
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Picture-Superiority Effect in Visual Communication.
B. Online Images:A Hidden Carrier of Gender Bias.
C. Google Images:Strengths and Weaknesses.
D. Ways to Reduce Gender Stereotypes in Society.

As a writing teacher, I am used to reading and responding to difficult texts. In fact, I like dealing with texts that have interesting ideas, because I understand their value. I have learned through my years of education that what eventually appeals to me is not just grammatically-perfect, smooth writing, but writing that forces me to think beyond the page. It is writing where the writer has challenged himself or herself and then offered that challenge to the reader.
You will often come across critical thinking and analysis as requirements for tasks in writing and upper-level courses across different subjects. Instructors have different explanations of what they actually require from you, but, in general, they expect you to respond thoughtfully to the texts you read. The first thing you should remember is not to be afraid of critical thinking. It does not mean that you have to criticize the text, oppose its basic idea, or attack the writer simply because you feel you have to. Criticism is the process of responding to and judging ideas, arguments, and style so that readers understand how and why you value them.
Critical thinking is also a process that is key to all subjects. While in this passage I refer mainly to critical thinking in writing, the general principles behind critical thinking are very similar in other fields. In history, for instance, it could mean examining and analyzing primary sources to understand the background in which they were written. In the hard sciences, it usually involves making judgments and decisions rationally (理性地), and solving problems.
While critical thinking may be subject-specific, most of its general principles such as thinking rationally, making independent judgments, and having a healthy doubt about what is being read, are common to all subjects. No matter the area of study, using critical thinking skills leads to clear, flexible thinking and a better understanding of the subject at hand.
12. Why does the author prefer certain texts?
A. They are error-free in grammar. B. They present exciting viewpoints.
C. They make readers reflective. D. They read smoothly and easily.
13. What is critical thinking according to the author?
A. Challenging the author’s viewpoint. B. Considering and assessing thoughts.
C. Rejecting the text’s main argument. D. Finding fault with the writing.
14. How does the author explain that critical thinking matters across all subjects?
A. By referring to different areas of study. B. By describing what it means in history.
C. By explaining its role in science. D. By drawing comparisons between fields.
15. What might be discussed in the follow-up text?
A. Types of critical thinking. B. Uses of deep thinking.
C. Benefits of critical thinking. D. Methods of thinking critically.

One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much. ____16____ There’s no value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message doesn’t come across clearly. Being clear and brief — while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to know — is a high-level communication skill.
Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively.
Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communications to their interests. ____17____ This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
Don’t use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored. Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand. ____18____ However, they’re hearing it for the first time. Keep it simple.
____19____
If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it. Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others. Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills.
Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email. Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over, and follow up with questions. ____20____
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the effort.
A. Be patient.
B. Get the audience involved.
C. The best messages are often simple.
D. Speak directly to what matters to them.
E. You may be surprised by what your listeners offer.

War broke out in our house in late July with less than a month to go before my first day of college. It was a battle of wills, my mom’s and my own, over which school I was to attend. She wanted me to attend the well-known nursing school to which I was originally accepted, but I wanted to go to a small, private writing college with a student body of fewer than 300 students. Every night for two weeks, we argued, yelled and gave silent treatments until both parties went to bed with regrets and frustrations.
It was mostly my fault. Since my junior year of high school, I had aimed at being a nurse. I took all the required courses, applied for nursing scholarships, and even worked as a volunteer in my town’s local hospital. My goal, or so I told everyone, was to treat the sick and heal the hurt.
Yet, as graduation and college neared, I gradually found it was not what I was meant to do for the rest of my life. I could picture myself in providing wound care, making rounds and taking temperatures, but I couldn’t picture myself happy. It wasn’t the future I wanted.
Then, it dawned on me. I had been creating and writing stories for as long as I could remember. Even at four years old, I had my dad write as I told him the stories I had created. I had written for my high school’s newspaper and attended a writing camp over the previous summer. I loved it, and writing was what I had always pictured myself doing as a hobby. Now, it had become much more than a hobby. It was going to be my career even if the future was uncertain. It had to be.

A 5. D 6. C 7. B

根据第一段中“If I felt anxious or tired, I just kept going. If I had a headache, I took painkillers. There was very little thought given to why symptoms appeared or how to live in a way that might prevent them from happening.(如果我感到焦虑或疲惫,我就继续坚持下去。如果我头痛,我就吃止痛药。我很少去思考这些症状为何出现,或者如何以一种可能防止症状出现的方式生活。)”可知,凯特早期对待健康问题的方式是忽略根本原因。故选A。
根据第二段中“I went to the hospital and was told doctors could do nothing, except to keep an eye on it in case it caused problems later in life. There was no mention of emotional tension. No questions about how I was dealing with stress. That was the moment I turned to acupuncture (针灸).(我去了医院,医生告诉我他们无能为力,只能密切关注,以防它日后引发问题。没有提到情绪紧张。没有问我如何应对压力。就在那一刻,我转向了针灸。)”可知,医生没有解决她的压力问题,这使得凯特转向针灸。故选D。
【6题详解】

B 9. D 10. B 11. B
根据文章第二段“Both images and text showed biased associations, with women more often described in liberal arts roles and men in science and technology. However, the imbalance was “statistically more extreme” in images.(图片和文字均呈现出偏见性的关联,女性更常被描绘为从事文科角色,而男性则多出现在科学与技术领域。然而,这种失衡在图像中“统计上更为极端”。)”可知,研究人员在研究中发现了图像显示出比文本更极端的偏见。故选B项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段““Consistently, we find that the algorithm appears to be privileging male content.” The site may be holding a mirror to users’ attitude. “Google is just a system,” Guilbeault says, “reflecting what’s going on in other areas of the internet.”(“我们一致发现,该算法似乎对男性内容给予了特权。”
根据文章第一段“A recent study examined how online images strengthen gender bias (偏见), even when written descriptions are more balanced. (最近的一项研究调查了在线图像如何强化性别偏见,即使书面描述更加平衡。)”可知,本文主要介绍了在线图像是如何增强性别偏见的,所以B选项“网络图像:性别偏见的隐藏载体。”能概括文章大意,适合用作文章标题。故选B项。
D
C 13. B 14. A 15. D

根据第一段中“In fact, I like dealing with texts that have interesting ideas, because I understand their value. I have learned through my years of education that what eventually appeals to me is not just grammatically-perfect, smooth writing, but writing that forces me to think beyond the page. It is writing where the writer has challenged himself or herself and then offered that challenge to the reader. (事实上,我偏爱解读观点新颖深刻的文章,因为我深知其价值。多年教育让我明白:真正打动我的,从来不止是语法无误、文笔流畅的文字,而是能启发我跳出文本、深度思考的作品。这类创作,是作者先挑战自我,再将这份思辨感传递给读者。)”可知,作者更喜欢能促使读者思考的文本,也就是让读者有反思性的文本。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“Criticism is the process of responding to and judging ideas, arguments, and style so that readers understand how and why you value them. (批判是对观点、论点和风格做出回应和判断的过程,以便读者理解你如何以及为什么重视它们。)”可知,批判性思维是考虑和评估想法的过程。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“While in this passage I refer mainly to critical thinking in writing, the general principles behind critical thinking are very similar in other fields. In history, for instance, it could mean examining and analyzing primary sources to understand the background in which they were written. In the hard sciences, it usually involves making judgments and decisions rationally (理性地), and solving problems. (虽然在这篇文章中我主要指的是写作中的批判性思维,但批判性思维背后的基本原则在其他领域也非常相似。例如,在历史领域,它可能意味着检查和分析原始资料,以了解它们所写的背景。在硬科学领域,它通常涉及理性地做出判断和决策,并解决问题。)”可知,作者通过提及不同研究领域来解释批判性思维在所有学科中的重要性。故选A。
文章前三段主要介绍了批判性思维是什么以及它在不同学科中的重要性,最后一段提到“No matter the area of study, using critical thinking skills leads to clear, flexible thinking and a better understanding of the subject at hand. (无论研究领域如何,使用批判性思维技能都会带来清晰、灵活的思维,以及对当前主题更好的理解。)”,接下来可能会讨论如何进行批判性思考,即批判性思维的方法。故选D。
