Day Two He woke up at 10 o’clock, and then he went into town with his mom.Afterwards, his mom phoned her friend and her daughter to ask if they could come round,as they had not seen each other for months! They stayed at their friend’s house for 1 hour—during that time he and his classmate surfed the Internet. Day Three He woke up at 10 am.That day was Sunday. He bought chips and fish for lunch and he bought some new pens.He went to Sainsbury on his way back home.Ever since then,he has been surfing the Internet, eating dinner and watching TV. Day Four His mom went to work today. He did some more homework and in the afternoon he surfed the Internet. His mom left his lunch out before she went. Then he watched channel FIVE.That’s all he has done today. Day Five He woke up at 2 pm,and so did his mom. They went to Tesco at 3:30 pm where Mom kept meeting her friends, and they chatted for 2 hours! When they got home,it was already time for dinner.Afterwards,he did more homework until 2 am. 1.Which of the following things did Sam do on Day One? A.He made lunch at home by himself. B.He went to Tesco with his mom. C.He replied to the message of his friend. D.He chatted with his classmate at his house. 2.How many times did Sam’s mother meet her friends during the five days? A.Once. B.Twice. C.Three times. D.Four times. 3.What can be inferred from the text? A.Teenagers get up quite early during holidays. B.Parents shouldn’t leave teenagers alone at home. C.Teenagers needn’t do their homework during holidays. D.Surfing the Internet has become a part of teenagers’ lives. B Researchers recently studied 3,000 middle school students.Among them were 618 teenagers with one parent who lived away from home for long periods of time because of work. The researchers wanted to know how the work of these “fly-in,fly-out” parents might influence the health of their children. A higher percentage (比例) of teenagers who experienced the long work absence of a parent had emotional (情感的) or behavioral problems compared with those whose parents worked more traditional hours. This supports earlier research finding high percentages of emotional problems in teenagers who often returned to an empty house after school or whose parents were seldom at dinner. Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time to be present in their children’s lives, but it helps to be home at certain times. And the best parental presence for a teenager may sometimes be like a potted (盆栽的) plant. Many parents of teenagers have known this to be true and find ways to be present without trying to start a conversation. One friend of mine quietly does housework each evening in the sitting room where her teenagers watch TV.They enjoy one another’s company (陪伴) without the need to talk. In fact, many years of research suggests that children use their parents as a safe base from which to explore the world.Studies tell us that young children quietly follow their parents’ movements from room to room, even while carrying on with their own activities.Perhaps our teens, like babies, feel most at ease when their parents are still around. They don’t want to stay away from parents who allow them freedom. A new school year is at hand,so as parents we could offer our teenagers a “potted flower” as a gift, whose quiet and steady (稳定的) presence will give them a great day. 4.What did the study find about the 618 teens? A.They had more dinners with their parents. B.They were more prepared to help themselves. C.They were more likely to have trouble with their feelings. D.They showed more dislike for traditional working hours. 5.What is the author’s attitude to her friend’s practice? A.She doubts it. B.She supports it. C.She is worried about it. D.She cares little about it. 6.What does earlier research say about young kids according to paragraph 4? A.They prefer to play with babies. B.They want more freedom from parents. C.They pay attention to parents’ behavior. D.They show more interest in new activities. 7.What is the best title for the text? A.Teens want potted plant parents B.Your kids still need conversation C.Quiet families raise healthier teenagers D.Parents know little about today’s teenagers C While teenagers who are at risk of depression with risky behaviors — drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and cutting classes often alert parents and teachers that serious problems are brewing,a new study finds that there’s another group of adolescents who are in nearly as much danger of experiencing the same mental symptoms. These teens use tons of media, get insufficient sleep and have a sedentary (不爱活动的) lifestyle.Of course, that may sound like a description of every teenager on the planet. But the study warns that it is teenagers who engage in all three of these practices in the extreme that are truly in a dangerous position.Because their behaviors are not usually seen as a red flag, these young people have been called the “invisible risk” group by the study’s authors. The study’s authors surveyed 15,395 students and analyzed nine risky behaviors, including excessive alcohol use, illegal drug use, heavy smoking and high media use.Their aim was to determine the relationship between these risky behaviors and mental health issues in teenagers. The group that scored high on all nine of the risky behaviors was most likely to show symptoms of depression;in all, nearly 15% of this group reported being depressed, compared with just 4% of the low-risk group. But the invisible group wasn’t far behind the high-risk set, with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression. The findings caught Carli off guard.“We didn’t expect that,” he says.“The high-risk group and low-risk group are obvious, but this third group was not only unexpected. It was so distinct and so larger — nearly one third of our sample — that it became a key finding of the study.” Carli says that one of the most significant things about his study is that it provides new early warning signs for parents, teachers and mental health-care providers. And early identifications, support and treatment for mental health issues,he says, are the best ways to keep them from turning into full-blown disorders. 8.Which teenager probably belongs to the “invisible group”? A.A teenager who drinks frequently. B.A teenager who exercises regularly. C.A teenager who skips school. D.A teenager who suffers from a lack of sleep. 9.What can we know about the new study? A.It was conducted by analyzing and comparing the previous data. B.It was intended to dig into the reasons for depression. C.It revealed an alarming rate of the invisible group suffering depression. D.Its findings were under expectation of the research team. 10.What is Carli’s attitude towards the findings? A.Unclear. B.Positive. C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent. 11.The author wrote this passage to .  A.introduce a new therapy for teens’ mental disorder B.warn about the unobserved signals for teens’ mental problems C.share a novel psychological experiment with teens D.caution teens against developing unhealthy habits 参考答案 Ⅰ.1.to compete 2.confused 3.advanced 4.Obviously 5.to take 6.about/on/over 7.to concentrate/(should) concentrate 8.drinking 9.to wear 10.to teach Ⅱ.1.sign up for 2.clean up 3.handing out 4.is responsible for 5.is suitable for Ⅲ.1.it is wrong of us students to use 2.Making friends online 3.recommends me to/recommends that I (should) join in group discussions so that 4.so that he could catch the first bus 5.prefer helping/to help others Ⅳ.【语篇解读】本文是一篇记叙文。 根据Day One中的“He checked his mobile phone during lunch...for not replying sooner.” 根据Day Two中的“Afterwards, his mom phoned her friend...They stayed at their friend’s house for 1 hour”及Day Five中的“They went to Tesco at 3:30 pm where Mom kept meeting her friends, and they chatted for 2 hours!” 根据Day Two中的“They stayed at their friend’s house for 1 hour—during that time he and his classmate surfed the Internet.”及Day Three中的“Ever since then,he has been surfing the Internet, eating dinner and watching TV.”及Day Four中的“He did some more homework and in the afternoon he surfed the Internet.” 根据第二段中“A higher percentage of teenagers...worked more traditional hours.” 根据文中“One friend of mine...stay away from parents who allow them freedom.” 根据第二段中“A higher percentage of teenagers...worked more traditional hours.”和第三段中“Findings also suggest that parents don’t have to be home all the time...sometimes be like a potted plant.” 根据第二段“These teens use tons of media...the ‘invisible risk’ group by the study’s authors.” 根据第三段中“The group that scored high...with more than 13% of them exhibiting depression.”
