WALK FOR GREEN
How often do you walk around the campus instead of getting straight onto the shuttle bus? The beauties of our campus deserve to be better explored and can best be explored on foot. Walking is also a greener and healthier alternative to using vehicles. To encourage more students and staff members to walk around the campus, our school has launched a new “Walk for Green” initiative.
Programme
Setting out from the MTR Station, “Walk for Green” recommends various walking routes on campus, one of which covers the YIA Building, LSK Building and LWS Building. Card readers for different walking routes have been installed (安装) to record the number of points completed by “Walk for Green” participants. Participants who collect 60 points within 30 days will be awarded the title “Green Walker”.
Participation
To participate, students and staff members would choose a marked route, and tap their school cards at the card readers installed at both the start and end points(and also at an intermediate card reader). Name, student/staff ID, department/unit, date, time and card readers tapped will be recorded.
Walking Journey Points
Important Notes:
● Walkers must complete one trip (either upwards or downwards) within one hour to score points.
● A total of up to six points can be earned each day.
Every time you take a walk on campus, you are helping to preserve our environment and also keeping yourself healthy. Let’s start from today!
21. Where does “Walk for Green” start?
A. YIA Building. B. LSK Building. C. LWS Building. D. MTR Station.
22. How many points do you get daily by walking from YIA Building to LWS Building?
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 6.
23. What are participants required to do to score?
A. Collect at least 6 points. B. Complete a round trip.
C. Maintain a fixed speed. D. Finish a trip in a set time.

On the summit of a mountain called Shishapangma, an 18-year-old Sherpa (夏尔巴人) climber called Nima recorded a selfie video. With this climb, he became the youngest person ever to top all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks.
Once he descended, Nima shared the video online under the tag (标签) “Sherpapower”, spreading the message that his people were athletes in their own right, not just guides of foreign climbers. For nearly 120 years, Sherpas have served as porters and guides for foreign climbers seeking glory on the world’s highest peaks, which makes them so closely linked to this work that many Westerners mistake the word “Sherpa” for a profession, not an ethnicity (种族).
During his first mountain climbing, an avalanche (雪崩) claimed the lives of his best friend, Lama, and his client on their summit push. He saw how Sherpas sacrificed their own safety and even lives to help others summit. It was at that moment that he began to use the word “sherpapower” with new purpose of being a voice for his community.
To achieve this, Nima has to be a professional climber sponsored (赞助) by brands like the Red Bull. The brands seldom sponsor mountaineers who follow trade routes on fixed ropes. His 14-peaks record hasn’t been enough to earn sponsorships. But for him, sponsorships mean dignity instead of money. He had to explore new routes or peaks without bottled oxygen or fixed ropes. Therefore, two months after setting his record, Nima was preparing for his next project. Alongside famed Italian climber Moro, he was attempting a winter climbing of 8,163-meter Manaslu, which was eventually cancelled due to extreme conditions. Nima immediately planned another attempt on Manaslu for next winter with his partner.
It remains to be seen if Nima will be the breakthrough athlete he wants to be. After all, he’s only 18.
24. What is the common understanding of “Sherpa” to Westerners?
A. A symbol. B. An identity. C. A concept. D. An occupation.
25. What does the underlined word “claimed” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Spared. B. Guarded. C. Took. D. Sustained.
26. Why did Nima seek a different climbing route?
A. To compete with top-class athletes.
B. To qualify as a professional climber.
C. To build his fortune in outdoor industry.
D. To get recognised as an experienced guide.
27. Which of the following best describes Nima?
A. Determined and ethnically conscious. B. Carefree and strong-willed.
C. Straightforward and well-mannered. D. Modest and warm-hearted.

Throughout history, trees have played a key role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO₂ and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO₂ trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
However, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new aspect to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO₂ into calcium oxalate. Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO₂ is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was emphasized by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO₂ that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are important before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an alternative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
28. What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A. They help turn CO₂ into solids. B. They can absorb more CO₂.
C. They can release oxygen quickly. D. They live in harmony with bacteria.
29. Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A. To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B. To carry out more cooperative researches.
C. To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D. To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
30. What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A. The method of green development. B. The possibility of scientific approaches.
C. The role of nature in climate solutions. D. The seriousness of global climate change.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Recent Advance in CO2 Research
B. Kenyan Trees: A Natural Carbon Lock
C. Tree Planting: A Key to Ecological Balance
D. A Defensive Strategy in Nature

Shelter dogs often just sleep for the first week after they’re adopted (领养). Many people wonder why. This is because, now safely away from the noise of the shelter, they finally relax and fall into a deep sleep after their long watch.
Lots of us, so to speak, long to end up being watched, only nobody coming to take us home. How are you supposed to feel it’s OK to rest your eyes when there’s always another bill, another task to take?
One small thing that can help is to move your thinking about self-care from activities to feelings. The self-care industry often presents “rest” as a set of actions: a holiday, a meditation (冥思), a special kind of exercise. But no activity is recovery if you experience no “rest” feelings while doing it. Activities help when they are ways to a “rest” feeling, and it’s the feeling itself that matters. For example, quiet reading, meant to make you feel calm, won’t be of much use if the stress follows throughout, or if what you needed wasn’t to feel calm but to feel free.
In addition, naming the feeling we need in greater detail than we’re used to leads to more effective rest. Not “I need not to feel burned out” but “I need to feel safe”. Then we can look for ways to get those feelings that don’t require months of expensive leave. Instead of the activity of “no screens”, we set the goal of feeling proud of something we do. Instead of the activity of “long walk”, we feel the feeling of attending to my surrounds.
Another strategy might be to cut corners you can. You’re clearly clever, energetic, and capable. These qualities can turn every part of life into an opportunity to do well. But in fact, it doesn’t have to be like this. You may clean irregularly when tired, or have instant meals over busy time. For administrative (管理的) tasks, it will be fine to do it to exactly the level at which they do not make your life worse, and then stop.
32. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By solving a doubt. B. By picturing a fact.
C. By raising a problem. D. By presenting a case.
33. What is the problem with the self-care industry according to the text?
A. It ignores the “rest” feelings. B. It limits the range of actions.
C. It focuses on calm reading. D. It misleads us in exercises.
34. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Improving the quality of life. B. Lowering standards in cases.
C. Lazing around all the way. D. Reducing necessary work.
35. What is the structure of the text?
A. B. C. D.

Ten-year-old Josh came from a poor family. His mother was a part-time cleaner and his father fixed small appliances for his neighbors. Though the family’s clothes were faded and patched (打补丁的), and the rent was a constant worry at the end of the month, Josh’s parents always taught him that honesty cost nothing but was worth everything.
One afternoon, Josh walked his bike to old Mr. Black’s repair shop. The chain was broken again, and Mr. Black, who was familiar with their struggles — charged only two dollars for the repair. Before Josh left, Mr. Black warned that the frame was nearly worn out. Josh thanked him and promised to ride carefully.
On the way home, Josh discovered something at the bus stop — a thick envelope half-buried in snow. He picked it up and took a look inside. His eyes widened. It was full of cash, more money than he’d ever seen: Hundreds of dollars, maybe thousands.
His first thought was about his mother’s worn-out shoes and the rent that was due. He could slip the envelope into his jacket, and no one would know. But then he remembered his father’s words: “We might be poor, Josh, but we must be honest.” His heart raced as he weighed the wrong that was easy against the right that was hard. Then he sat down on the frozen bench, holding the envelope tightly, and waited.
An hour passed, then two. Josh’s toes grew numb (麻木的) as the setting sun painted the sky orange and pink. Occasionally, strangers walked by, eyeing him curiously, but he just held the envelope tighter. A woman asked if he was okay, but he simply shook his head and stayed put. His nose was red from cold, and he shivered uncontrollably, but he didn’t move. Finally, just as Josh began to worry about his parents’ concern, a black car stopped. Then a man named Eason in a suit jumped out, urgently scanning (察看) the ground.

D 25. C 26. B 27. A
根据第二段中“For nearly 120 years, Sherpas have served as porters and guides for foreign climbers seeking glory on the world’s highest peaks, which makes them so closely linked to this work that many Westerners mistake the word “Sherpa” for a profession, not an ethnicity (种族).(近120年来,夏尔巴人一直担任外国登山者在世界最高峰上追求荣耀的搬运工和向导。这种紧密的职业关联,让许多西方人误将“夏尔巴”(Sherpa)一词理解为一种职业,而非一个民族。)”可知,西方人通常将“夏尔巴人”理解为一种职业。故选D。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文“He saw how Sherpas sacrificed their own safety and even lives to help others summit.(他目睹了夏尔巴人为帮助他人登顶,不惜牺牲自身安全甚至生命的壮举。)”
根据第四段中“To achieve this, Nima has to be a professional climber sponsored (赞助) by brands like the Red Bull. The brands seldom sponsor mountaineers who follow trade routes on fixed ropes.(为实现这一目标,Nima必须成为由红牛等品牌赞助的职业登山者。这些品牌很少赞助那些沿固定绳索传统路线攀登的登山者。)”和“He had to explore new routes or peaks without bottled oxygen or fixed ropes.(他不得不探索无瓶装氧气、无固定绳索的新路线或山峰。)”
根据第四段中“Therefore, two months after setting his record, Nima was preparing for his next project. Alongside famed Italian climber Moro, he was attempting a winter climbing of 8,163-meter Manaslu, which was eventually cancelled due to extreme conditions. Nima immediately planned another attempt on Manaslu for next winter with his partner.(因此,在创下纪录仅两个月后,Nima便开始筹备下一个项目。他与意大利著名登山者Moro一起,尝试冬季攀登海拔8163米的马纳斯鲁峰,但最终因极端天气条件而取消。Nima随即与搭档计划在次年冬季再次尝试攀登马纳斯鲁峰。)”可知,Nima打破纪录后立即计划新挑战,在计划受阻时立即做出调整,准备继续尝试,表明他坚定地追求自己的目标。根据第二段中“Once he descended, Nima shared the video online under the tag (标签) “Sherpapower”, spreading the message that his people were athletes in their own right, not just guides of foreign climbers.(下山后,Nima以“夏尔巴力量”为标签在网上发布了这段视频,传递出一个信息:夏尔巴人本身就是名副其实的运动员,而不仅仅是外国登山者的向导。)”和第三段中“It was at that moment that he began to use the word “sherpapower” with new purpose of being a voice for his community.(正是在那一刻,他开始以全新的意义使用“夏尔巴力量”一词,旨在为他的族群发声。)” 故选A。
C
A 29. D 30. C 31. B

D

根据第一段中的“Shelter dogs often just sleep for the first week after they’re adopted (领养). Many people wonder why. This is because, now safely away from the noise of the shelter, they finally relax and fall into a deep sleep after their long watch.(收容所的狗狗在被领养后的第一周通常只会睡觉。很多人对此感到疑惑。这是因为,现在它们安全地远离了收容所的噪音,在长时间的警惕之后终于放松下来,陷入了深度睡眠)”可知,作者通过列举收容所狗狗被领养后沉睡这一具体事例,引出下文人们难以真正休息的话题。故选D项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The self-care industry often presents “rest” as a set of actions: a holiday, a meditation (冥思), a special kind of exercise. But no activity is recovery if you experience no “rest” feelings while doing it.(自我护理行业通常将“休息”呈现为一系列行为:假期、冥思、一种特殊的运动。但如果你在做这些活动时没有感受到“休息”的感觉,那么任何活动都不算恢复)”可知,自我护理行业的问题在于它只注重一系列休息行为,却忽视了“休息”本身带来的感受。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“Another strategy might be to cut corners you can. You’re clearly clever, energetic, and capable. These qualities can turn every part of life into an opportunity to do well. But in fact, it doesn’t have to be like this.(另一个策略可能是尽可能地方走捷径。你显然是聪明、精力充沛且有能力的。这些品质会把生活的每一部分都变成表现出色的机会。但事实上,不一定非要这样)”及后文举例“You may clean irregularly when tired, or have instant meals over busy time. For administrative (管理的) tasks, it will be fine to do it to exactly the level at which they do not make your life worse, and then stop.(疲惫时,打扫卫生可以随性些;忙碌时,吃点速食也无妨。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Josh stood and asked if the man was searching for something. The man rushed over, explaining it was his workers’ payroll — eight hundred dollars. When Josh held out the envelope, the man collapsed in relief, and then he looked at the boy in wonder. Noticing Josh’s worn-out bicycle and thin coat, he insisted on driving him home. Although Josh politely refused, the man was firm because he was unwilling to let this honest child ride through the darkness and cold. During the short ride, Eason learned about the family’s struggles.
The next morning, Eason visited Josh’s house with a brand-new bicycle. He told Josh’s parents how their son’s honesty had saved his workers and his business. Josh’s mother wiped her tears while his father stood tall. Eason explained that this gift wasn’t out of pity, but out of respect for their values. Greatly moved, they finally accepted the gift. Eason also offered Josh’s father a stable job at his factory. This simple act would put an end to their rent worries, proving that honesty, even in poverty, sows the seeds of change.
