Niagara Falls State Park was filled with celebration and misty magic this week as a 105-year-old woman checked a major item off her list of dreams.
Born in 1920, Emily Bula has lived through monumental moments in history and created a life filled with “love, laughter, polka dancing, and incredible stories”, according to a Facebook post from Niagara Falls State Park. However, there was still one adventure she hadn’t experienced. That adventure was getting up close to the roaring Niagara Falls aboard the legendary Maid of the Mist.
That dream became a reality thanks to the teamwork of Harris Hill Nursing Facility and the staff of the Maid of the Mist. On the morning of July 24th, Emily boarded the tour boat surrounded by family, nursing home staff, and supporters.
“Emily Bula… fulfilled her life-long dream of riding the legendary Maid of the Mist!” the park’s post reads. “With help from the amazing team at Harris Hill Nursing Facility and the Maid of the Mist, Emily boarded the all-electric boat this morning surrounded by loved ones, staff, and supporters — proving it’s never too late to chase a dream.” As the boat edged closer to the base of Horseshoe Falls, Emily experienced the powerful spray (浪花) firsthand. The moment was not just emotional for Emily and her family, but also for everyone watching.
For those unfamiliar, the Maid of the Mist is a must-do boat tour operating out of Niagara Falls State Park since 1846. The tour offers visitors a thrilling experience as it takes them right into the basin of the falls.
As for Emily, she’s now part of an elite (精英) group. She joins the ranks of America’s oldest citizens. According to the Gerontology Research Group, the oldest living person in the United States is currently over 115 years old. Emily Bula may not hold the record just yet, but with her spirit and energy, she’s certainly one of the most inspiring.
Happy 105th birthday, Emily!
24. What was on Emily’s list of life-long dreams?
A. To get close to the base of Horseshoe Falls.
B. To tour the world on the Maid of the Mist.

D. To get aboard the Maid of the Mist with her family.
25. How did Emily feel when approaching the Horseshoe Falls?
A. Excited. B. Horrified. C. Surprised. D. Disappointed.
26. What can we learn about the Maid of the Mist?
A. It is a brand new, all-electric boat.
B. It takes visitors directly to the top of the falls.
C. It is specifically designed for senior citizens.
D. It has been operating since the mid-19th century.
27. Why does the author mention the record of the Gerontology Research Group?
A. To identify Emily’s real age.
B. To introduce America’s elite group.
C. To highlight Emily’s achievements.
D. To show the average age of Americans.

Eating a lot of red and processed meats has been linked to a higher risk of certain cancers, like stomach cancer, mainly because harmful chemicals can form when these meats are cooked at high temperatures or heavily processed. These chemicals, called mutagens, aren’t found in raw meat but are created during grilling, frying, or smoking.
According to large study group analysis and systematic reviews, cancer risk, particularly colorectal cancer, begins to increase when red meat intake exceeds about 350-500 grams of cooked weight per week. That’s roughly three to four servings per week. Beyond this, the risk rises in a dose-dependent way. For example, an analysis found that for every additional 100 grams of red meat per day, colorectal cancer risk increased by about 12%-17%. For processed meat, the evidence is even stronger and more consistent. Processed meats — like bacon, sausages, ham, and cured meats — were classified by the World Cancer Research Fund as Group 1 carcinogens, meaning there is sufficient evidence that they cause cancer in humans.
Lab-grown meat is produced from animal cells and is not the same as salt-cured processed meat. There’s no long-term human data yet, so any risk would depend on how it’s made and cooked, with lower exposure expected if no heavy processing is applied and high-temperature roasting is minimised. Lab-grown meat is indeed made by quickly growing animal cells in a controlled environment, but not by using cancer cells. The cells used are normal animal stem cells, which are grown and differentiated into muscle and fat cells, being carefully monitored to ensure they grow safely and do not become abnormal or cancerous.
Some people worry about safety because the cells multiply quickly, but this is completely natural; it’s the same way stem cells grow and repair tissue in animals. The process is closely monitored to ensure the cells remain healthy and normal. In fact, lab-grown meat avoids some of the health risks linked to traditional meat, such as bacteria from slaughterhouses and harmful chemicals from processing.
28. What can we infer about “mutagens” from paragraph 1?
A. They’re substances leading to cancer.
B. They exist only at lower temperatures.
C. They commonly exist in raw meats.
D. They’re substances often used in cooking.
29. How much cooked red meat intake is considered safe generally?
A. 100 grams or below daily. B. Below 50-70 grams daily.
C. 550 grams or below weekly. D. Between 150-170 grams daily.
30. What does the third paragraph aim to indicate?
A. The safety of lab-grown meat.
B. The proper way of cooking meat.
C. The significance of stem cells.
D. The potential of killing cancer cells.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How Is Lab-Grown Meat Made?
B. Why Red Meat May Cause Cancer?
C. Red Meat & Lab-Grown Meat: What to Know
D. Reducing Risk: Red Meat & Processed Meat
D
A humanoid robot’s ability to interact effectively relies on its capacity to recognize, imitate (模仿), and respond to human social signals. For instance, a study found that humanoid robots can enhance teamwork by displaying a happy face and making appropriate gaze shifts toward humans, compared to displaying a sad face and making inappropriate gaze shifts, which leads to improved performance in collaborative tasks. Similarly, when humanoid robots imitate facial expressions, they foster stronger social bonding between humans and robots. Additionally, research shows that people are more likely to follow a robot’s guidance when it speaks in a natural human voice rather than a mechanical one.
Research on robot personality features has found that people perform better in collaborative tasks when the robot’s personality aligns with their own. In a memory game, people made fewer errors when interacting with a robot that mirrored their personality features and responded more positively to robots that matched their social style. However, when paired with another human collaborator in the same game, people performed better when their personalities were opposite rather than similar. This difference is attributed to the way humans perceive personality differences between each other, which tends to create more engaging interactions, leading to better performance. In contrast, when interacting with a robot, people interpret it as a high-tech device and prefer robots that behave similarly to themselves, as this is seen as safer and easier to control, allowing them to focus more on the task.
Beyond daily assistance, robots could play a transformative role in education and mental well-being. For example, robots can detect when a learner is struggling and adjust their instructional style accordingly. In well-being applications, social robots have been shown to reduce anxiety by offering companionship and emotional support, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. Additionally, humanoid robots have demonstrated effectiveness as teaching assistants for autistic (自闭的) children, helping them develop social interaction skills.
As robotic technology evolves, we may see robots not only as assistants but as empathetic partners in education, therapy, and social care.
32. What kind of robot expressions can improve teamwork?
A. A calm face and no gaze shifts.
B. A sad face and improper gaze shifts.
C. An emotionless face and direct gazes.
D. A joyful face and appropriate gaze shifts.
33. Which can best replace the underlined part “aligns with” in paragraph 2?
A. Counts on. B. Compares with.
C. Departs from. D. Corresponds to.
34. What actually happened in the human-robot game tasks?
A. People tended to view robots as social equals.
B. Robots failed to make genuine emotional responses.
C. Control and predictability enhanced human task focus.
D. Similar personalities successfully prevented communication errors.
35. What’s an advantage of robots in education according to the text?
A. Long-term full engagement. B. Suitable educational strategies.
C. Detecting risks in advance. D. Providing translation tools.

第二节(满分25分)
67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My brother is the most influential person in my life. His name is Jim and he is 21 years old, leaving a 4-year-gap in between the two of us. Most siblings are always quarreling, and never do anything together. My brother and I are most definitely not like that. We do everything together. Throughout my life I have tried to be more like him. He is not only my older brother but my role model. When I was 5, I would follow my brother around everywhere. I was an annoying younger brother.
This could be seen as a good or a bad thing. I was exposed to many things I should not have been by hanging out with my brother and his friends, but this also helped me to mature earlier. There is a phase in the younger years of my generation’s lives when it is considered cool to smoke. At the age of 14 I was tempted (诱惑) by friends to smoke, but since I had been with my brother when he was tempted to smoke, I knew it would be a bad decision to even try.
Watching my brothers go through the trials of life has helped me to resist certain temptations that I otherwise might have gotten sucked into. I was able to see the mistakes he made and avoid those decisions in my life. I have always been in competition with my brother; I strive to be as good as or better than him at everything. He was always bigger and faster than I was, so if we wrestled I would get beaten, and if we raced he would leave me in the dust. This instilled (培养) in me a drive to improve myself. My brother was not the brightest student. This motivated me to be as good a student as possible. If my age prevented me from being equal with my brother physically, I would have to strive hard in school to have better grades than he did.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, the turning point came when Jim unexpectedly failed his college courses.

C
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. C

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了红肉和加工肉类的致癌风险及人造肉的安全性相关信息。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中“These chemicals, called mutagens, aren’t found in raw meat but are created during grilling, frying, or smoking.(这些被称为诱变剂的化学物质在生肉中不存在,而是在烧烤、油炸或熏制过程中产生的。)”以及前文“Eating a lot of red and processed meats has been linked to a higher risk of certain cancers, like stomach cancer, mainly because harmful chemicals can form when these meats are cooked at high temperatures or heavily processed.(大量食用红肉和加工肉类与某些癌症(如胃癌)的高风险有关,主要是因为当这些肉类在高温下烹饪或大量加工时,会形成有害化学物质。)”可知,诱变剂是在烹饪过程中产生的有害化学物质,与某些癌症的高风险有关,因此可以推断出它们是致癌物质。故选A。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to large study group analysis and systematic reviews, cancer risk, particularly colorectal cancer, begins to increase when red meat intake exceeds about 350-500 grams of cooked weight per week. That’s roughly three to four servings per week. Beyond this, the risk rises in a dose-dependent way.(大型研究团队分析与系统综述显示,当每周熟红肉摄入量超过约350–500克时,患癌风险(尤其是结直肠癌)便开始上升,这大约相当于每周三到四份的食用量。超过这一范围后,患病风险会随摄入量增加而相应升高。)”可知,每周熟红肉摄入量在350–500通常被认为相对安全,所以每日低于50–70克是安全的。故选B。
【30题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Lab-grown meat is produced from animal cells and is not the same as salt-cured processed meat. The cells used are normal animal stem cells, which are grown and differentiated into muscle and fat cells, being carefully monitored to ensure they grow safely and do not become abnormal or cancerous.(人造肉是由动物细胞制成的,与盐腌加工肉不同。 故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容可知,文章首先介绍了红肉和加工肉类的致癌风险,然后讨论了人造肉的安全性及其与传统肉类的区别。因此,一个合适的标题应该是能够概括这两个主题的。选项C“Red Meat & Lab-Grown Meat: What to Know(红肉和人造肉:需要了解什么)”最符合这一要求。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
However, the turning point came when Jim unexpectedly failed his college courses.

After that difficult period, Jim and I entered a new chapter.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
However, the turning point came when Jim unexpectedly failed his college courses. This was a huge shock to our family, as Jim had always been seen as the one who would succeed easily. The news made me realize that success wasn’t guaranteed, even for someone I looked up to. I started to understand that everyone faces challenges, and what mattered was how we dealt with them. Jim’s failure taught me to be more supportive and less competitive, realizing that we could help each other grow.
After that difficult period, Jim and I entered a new chapter. He worked hard to retake his courses and finally graduated, which inspired me to face my own challenges with courage. We began to share our experiences openly, and I found that Jim was not only my brother but also a true friend who understood me deeply. Now, we continue to support each other in everything we do, knowing that our bond is stronger than any competition or challenge that may come our way.
