Last summer, I spent a week at my grandfather’s house in a quiet town. On the first morning, I found him practising calligraphy in his study. “Would you like to learn?” he asked, handing me a brush. I nodded, thinking it would be easy.
Grandfather started with the basics (基础). First, he showed me how to hold the brush straight and easily, saying, “The brush is like a part of your mind.” Next, we practised basic strokes on old newspapers. My lines were shaky and messy, making me feel upset. Then, he taught me to write “永”, which has eight basic strokes. After many tries, I finally wrote one that looked right. “You are learning more than writing,” he smiled.
As days passed, I felt calmer and more focused. On my last day, I wrote “耐” (patience). Though not perfect, the lines were much better.
When I got home, my father said, “Your grandfather has taught you well.” I finally understood: calligraphy was like a mirror, teaching me that real strength comes from a cool head, not speed. It wasn’t just a brush—it was a way to understand myself better.

In China, safety education is more and more important. The activities on the last Monday of March help students learn more about what they should do to keep safe. What are the main accidents at school? Take a look.
A stampede (踩踏) always happens in a crowded place. When students around you begin to push, just stand there and try to hold on to something. If you fall down in the crowd, move to one side and protect your head with your hands.
When earthquakes (地震) happen, you can get under a desk quickly and hold on. It’ll protect you from falling things. If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees and power lines.
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. In this way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire because they take in too much smoke. When you want to get out, you should make yourself close to the floor. Then you can breathe some fresh air.

Now, walking 10,000 steps a day is a popular goal among people who want to stay fit. However, some researchers looked into how many steps we actually need to stay healthy. Surprisingly, it’s fewer than we thought.
Not long ago, a team of scientists from two universities did a study. According to the study, taking 8,250 steps a day can greatly reduce health risks (风险) and taking 9,700 steps a day is best for those with cardiovascular conditions (心血管疾病). The researchers say that doing moderate physical activity is important, no matter how often or how long you do it.
The result is similar to what a study reported in JAMA Internal Medicine in 2022 discovered. Although people who walk 10,000 steps a day have a lower risk of getting cancer than those who walk 8,000 or 6,000 steps a day, they almost won’t benefit more from walking more than 10,000 steps.
What’s more, walking is also good for your emotional well-being. If you have the chance to walk in nature instead of a gym, you will get more benefit. So put on your walking shoes, and take a walk!
22. Why do people want to walk 10,000 steps a day?
A. Because they want to get popular.
B. Because they want to keep healthy.
C. Because they have a lot of free time.
D. Because researchers advised them to do so.
23. Henry wants to reduce health risks greatly. He should walk at least steps a day.
A. 10,000 B. 9,700 C. 8,250 D. 6,000
24. What is important according to the researchers?
A. Walking in a gym. B. Doing sport more often.
C. Spending more time doing sport. D. Doing moderate physical activity.
25. What can we learn from the reading?
A. The more people walk a day, the more they benefit.
B. Walking in nature is better for people than walking indoors.
C. It’s almost impossible for people to get cancer if they walk 10,000 steps a day.
D. People with cardiovascular conditions should walk less than healthy people.

Doing outdoor activities is a wonderful way to relax ourselves after long hours of study. It not only makes our body relaxed but also lets us get close to nature. Here’s a proper way to plan outdoor relaxation for students:
First, decide a simple outdoor activity that fits you, such as walking in the park, riding a bike along the road or flying a kite on the grassland. Then, check the weather report first to make sure the day is sunny or cloudy—bad weather will ruin your plan. Next, prepare necessary things like a bottle of water, a small snack and a hat to protect yourself from the sun. After that, spend about 40 minutes on the activity, don’t make it too long or you’ll feel tired. At last, take a short rest and share your happy experience with your family when you get home.
