Ⅰ.阅读理解
What is your ideal garden? Perhaps you’re thinking of adorable flowers, inviting paths and insects eating the plants. While it sounds odd, insects are essential to holistic gardening, a gardening method that uses native plants to better our local ecosystems.
“As we think about garden design, we often start with the color palette, the amount of sunlight and the soil conditions,” says Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture at Green Bay Botanical Garden. “The holistic approach adopts those concepts and adds another layer to provide value for insects and other parts of the ecosystem.” This begins with choosing plants that have evolved in your local conditions.
“With natives, you’re able to reduce the amount of upkeep and have plants that stand extreme conditions, like drought or wet soils,” he explains. “Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides(杀虫剂).” Looking at the big picture, those benefits overflow into the environment. An example is plants that like wet soil; they can be added to a rain garden to filter(过滤) the groundwater and reduce runoff. And when you don’t use pesticides in the garden, you can focus on letting insects grow.
Of course, tolerating all kinds of insects takes some effort. “We’re used to avoiding insect damage in our gardens, so it takes a bit of mental retraining to help us see the value of letting those insects eat the plants,” Mark says. Chewing insects serve as prey for other members of the ecosystem, such as birds, and in many species, those that survive the larval stage develop into pollinators(授粉者) that we like to see. As pollinators continue losing habitat, it becomes more vital to assist them, as they’re responsible for one-third of our food supply.
1.What is an advantage of holistic gardening?
A.It can make plants more appealing. B.It can enhance local ecosystems.
C.It can popularize gardening. D.It can control the reproduction of insects.
2.What does the underlined word “upkeep” mean in paragraph 3?
A.Design. B.Improvement. C.Decoration. D.Maintenance.
3.What do we know about native plants from the text?
A.They are beneficial to the environment.
B.They are sensitive to various pesticides.
C.They can help to filter the drinking water.
D.They need more light compared to foreign plants.
4.What message does the last paragraph mainly convey?
A.Birds are responsible for our food supply.
B.Pollinators face threats of losing their habitats.
C.People should avoid insect damage in gardens.
D.Insects play an important role in the food chain.
Ⅱ.七选五
In recent years, community gardens have been springing up in many cities, and they are becoming an increasingly popular part of urban life. 1 This trend is driven by a combination of environmental awareness, the appetite for fresh produce, and the need for community connection.
One of the main reasons for the rise of community gardens is the growing concern for the environment. 2 By growing their own fruits, vegetables, and herbs, people can reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting food from farms to supermarkets. Community gardens also contribute to urban greening, providing habitats for birds and insects, and improving air quality.
3 In a community garden, people can grow pesticide-free produce, ensuring that their families have access to healthy, chemical-free food. What’s more, the sense of accomplishment that comes from growing and harvesting one’s own food is priceless. There’s nothing quite like the taste of a ripe tomato picked straight from the vine.
Community gardens also play an incredible role in strengthening community bonds. 4 Whether it’s planning the garden layout, planting seeds, or harvesting the crops, these shared activities bring people together. Neighbors who may have never met before get to know each other, share gardening tips, and even exchange surplus(多余的) produce. This sense of community can be especially important in big cities where people often feel isolated.
For those interested in starting a community garden, the first step is to find a suitable piece of land. It could be an unused lot, a park, or even the roof of a building. Then, gather like-minded people in the community, and form a committee to plan and manage the garden. 5
A.Another benefit is the access to fresh, locally-grown food.
B.They offer a way for urban residents to connect with nature.
C.Gardens can also be a superb place for kids to learn about nature and basic gardening skills.
D.People from different backgrounds come together to work towards a common goal of creating a green and lively space.
E.Decide on the rules and responsibilities for each member, and start fundraising for necessary equipment and high-quality seeds.
F.However, starting a community garden is not without its challenges, such as dealing with land ownership issues and getting permission from local authorities.
G.People are becoming more aware of the environmental impact of modern agriculture, such as excessive(过度的) use of chemicals and high energy consumption.

It’s fair to say we’ve never once been 15 by a ski holiday in the French Alps. So, for now, the only question is: “Which resort are we going to?”
