Unit 2 Success-Writing Workshop
教学目标和重难点
教学目标
Cultivate students' ability to analyze biographical structure and use key expressions; foster critical thinking about success connotation; enhance cross-cultural understanding through celebrity stories; improve writing skills for introducing admirable figures.
教学重难点
Key: Grasp the three-paragraph structure of life stories and master descriptive expressions.
Difficulty: Integrate specific experiences and qualities to write a coherent and logical passage about an admirable figure.
教学过程
Task 1: Warm-up and Lead-in
Activity 1: Guessing Game
Display a series of blurred photos of world-renowned achievers, including Lang Ping, Yuan Longping, and Marie Curie. Guide students to work in pairs to guess their identities and briefly share what they know about these figures. Encourage students to use the expressions they learned in previous lessons, such as "be known as", "make great contributions to", and "overcome numerous difficulties".
Design Intent
Activate students' prior knowledge about successful people, stimulate their interest in the topic, and create a relaxed classroom atmosphere. At the same time, review the relevant vocabulary and expressions accumulated in the unit, laying a foundation for the subsequent writing teaching.
Task 2: Text Analysis and Structure Exploration
Activity 1: Fast Reading
Ask students to read the passage in Writing Workshop quickly. Then, present the following questions on the blackboard for them to answer:
Who is the main character introduced in the passage?
What is he/she famous for?
What kind of life stories does the passage mainly talk about?
After students finish reading, invite some of them to share their answers and make supplements and corrections together.
Activity 2: Detailed Reading and Structure Sorting
Divide students into groups of four. Provide each group with a copy of the passage and a structure sorting worksheet. Ask students to read the passage carefully and complete the following tasks:
Label each paragraph with its main function (General introduction / Important life experiences / Major achievements and comments).
Underline the key words and phrases that describe the person's character and achievements.
Summarize the general structure of a life story introduction.
Guide each group to discuss and complete the tasks. Then, invite representatives from each group to present their results. Finally, summarize and conclude the three-paragraph structure of a life story introduction:
Paragraph 1: General introduction (Identity, main contribution, and overall evaluation).
Paragraph 2: Important life experiences (Key events, difficulties overcome, and efforts made).
Paragraph 3: Major achievements and comments (Influences on the field or society and people's opinions).
Design Intent
Help students deeply understand the content and structure of the model text through fast reading and detailed reading. Guide them to summarize the writing structure and key expressions, which provides a clear writing framework for subsequent independent writing and cultivates their ability to analyze and summarize.
Task 3: Key Language Points and Expression Accumulation
Activity 1: Key Sentence Patterns Analysis
Write the following key sentence patterns on the blackboard, which are extracted from the model text:
Lang Ping, known as "Iron Hammer", is one of China's most recognized athletes and a legendary volleyball coach.
During her career as an athlete, she led the Chinese women's volleyball team to win several important championships, including the World Cup and the Olympic Games.
Her perseverance, courage, and love for volleyball have made her a role model for countless people.
Explain the usage of each sentence pattern, focusing on the usage of participles as attributives, prepositional phrases as adverbials, and compound adjectives. Then, let students read and recite these sentence patterns.
Activity 2: Expression Expansion
Ask students to work in pairs to expand the expressions related to describing successful people. For example, words and phrases about character (determined, persistent, innovative, selfless), achievements (make a breakthrough, set a record, make great contributions), and difficulties (overcome obstacles, face challenges, make sacrifices). Encourage them to write down as many as possible and share them with the class.
Design Intent
Focus on the key language points in the model text, help students master the usage of key sentence patterns and expressions, and accumulate rich language materials for their own writing. At the same time, through pair work and sharing, improve students' language expression ability and collaborative learning ability.
Task 4: Pre-writing: Topic Confirmation and Outline Design
Activity 1: Topic Discussion
Present the writing task: Write a short introduction to a person you admire. Guide students to discuss in groups:
Who do you want to write about? (A celebrity, a family member, a teacher, or a friend)
What are his/her main characteristics and achievements?
What inspiring stories or experiences does he/she have?
Encourage students to choose a person they are familiar with and interested in, and collect relevant information as much as possible.
Activity 2: Outline Design
Provide each student with an outline design template. Ask students to design their own writing outline according to the three-paragraph structure summarized earlier, including:
Paragraph 1: Basic information of the person (Name, identity, and main contribution).
Paragraph 2: Key life experiences and stories (Specific events, difficulties, and efforts).
Paragraph 3: Achievements, influences, and personal feelings.
Walk around the classroom to provide guidance and answers to questions for students. Invite some students to show their outlines and make comments and suggestions.
Design Intent
Guide students to clarify their writing topics and design reasonable writing outlines through discussion and outline design. Cultivate their logical thinking ability and make preparations for the subsequent draft writing, ensuring that each student has a clear writing direction.
Task 5: While-writing: Draft Writing and Teacher's Guidance
Activity 1: Independent Draft Writing
Ask students to write their first draft independently according to their designed outlines. Require them to use the sentence patterns and expressions accumulated earlier, pay attention to the logical connection between paragraphs, and ensure the accuracy of grammar and spelling.During the writing process, walk around the classroom to observe students' writing situations. Provide one-on-one guidance for students who encounter difficulties, such as helping them sort out ideas, correct grammar errors, and improve expression.
Activity 2: Peer Editing
After students finish writing their first drafts, ask them to exchange drafts with their deskmates. Provide a peer editing checklist on the blackboard, including:
Does the passage follow the three-paragraph structure?
Are the key information and characteristics of the person clearly described?
Are the key sentence patterns and expressions used correctly?
Are there any grammar or spelling errors?
Invite students to edit each other's drafts according to the checklist and write down their comments and suggestions.
Design Intent
Enable students to independently complete the writing of the first draft through the combination of independent writing and peer editing. Cultivate their independent writing ability and critical thinking ability. At the same time, through peer editing, students can learn from each other, find their own problems, and improve their writing level.
Task 6: Post-writing: Revision and Polishing
Activity 1: Self-revision
Ask students to revise their drafts again according to the peer editing comments and their own checking. Focus on adjusting the logical order of the content, correcting grammar and spelling errors, and optimizing the expression of key parts.
Activity 2: Polishing and Exhibition
Invite some students to read their revised passages aloud. Comment on their strengths and make appropriate suggestions for improvement. Then, select several excellent passages to display on the classroom wall or share in the class, encouraging students to learn from each other.
Design Intent
Guide students to conduct self-revision and polishing of their drafts, further improve the quality of their writing, and cultivate their awareness of careful writing. Through the exhibition of excellent passages, stimulate students' writing motivation and enhance their self-confidence.
Task 7: Summary and Assignment
Activity 1: Lesson Summary
Summarize the key points of this lesson: the three-paragraph structure of life story introduction, key sentence patterns and expressions, and the steps of writing (pre-writing, while-writing, post-writing). Emphasize that when writing, we should combine specific examples to show the characteristics and achievements of the person, and express our true feelings.
Activity 2: Assignment
Polish your passage and write the final version.
Read your passage to your family and ask for their opinions.
Collect more information about another successful person and try to write a short introduction next time.
Design Intent
Consolidate the knowledge and skills learned in this lesson through summary and assignment. Extend the learning to after-class time, enable students to further practice and improve their writing ability, and cultivate their good learning habits.
