Wildlife is now under serious threat from many human-induced problems, including the loss of natural habitats, environmental pollution (污染) and improper human activities. While protecting wildlife might feel like a huge challenge for ordinary people, simple and small daily actions in your community can make a big difference to the survival of various animal species. The following practical tips will guide you on protecting wildlife through easy daily moves.
Build wildlife-friendly areas in your backyard
When designing and decorating your garden for a more pleasant look, choose native plants that can supply food and safe shelter for local wildlife. This choice is also a great way to reduce environmental pollution effectively. Additionally, putting up bird or bat houses in your yard or garden can not only attract more wild species but also offer them a stable living space.
Protect the natural ecosystem in your backyard It’s important to avoid planting non-native plants in your backyard, as many of them may compete with or even kill the local plants that are the main food and shelter sources for wild animals, thus damaging the local natural ecosystem.
Stick to a greener daily lifestyle Cutting down on water and fuel (燃料) consumption is a direct way to protect the surrounding wildlife. You can choose public transportation like buses or subways for daily travel as much as possible, turn off electrical appliances when they are not in use, shorten your shower time, and set the indoor temperature at or below 68 degrees Fahrenheit during winter to save energy.
Choose wildlife-friendly products Refuse to buy any products made from endangered animals. Remember that a large number of endangered animals are killed by illegal traps or greedy hunters who aim to make huge profits from selling their body parts.
Support wildlife protection organizations financially You can donate money to local organizations or groups that are committed to wildlife protection. Your small donation can greatly support their daily work of protecting wildlife and their natural habitats.
1. Which of the following is advised to build a wildlife-friendly backyard?
A. Planting non-native plants for a more beautiful garden.
B. Using more fuels to keep the backyard warm in winter.
C. Setting up bird houses to attract and shelter wild species.
D. Cutting down local plants to reduce food competition for wildlife.
2. Which action is recommended for a greener lifestyle?
A. Stopping taking a shower to save water.
B. Taking the subway instead of walking for travel.
C. Turning off the lights and air conditioners when leaving the house.
D. Keeping the indoor temperature above 68 Fahrenheit degrees in winter.
3. Which is close to the underlined words “are committed to” in the last paragraph?
A. focus on B. care about
C. are friendly to D. look forward to
【答案】1. C 2. C 3. A

Today about 70 countries use Daylight Saving Time (DST). Daylight Saving was first introduced during World War I in Australia. During the world wars, DST was used for the late summers beginning January 1917 and 1942, and the full summers beginning September 1942 and 1943.
In 1967, Tasmania experienced a drought. The State Government introduced one hour of daylight saving that summer as a way of saving power and water. Tasmanians liked the idea of daylight saving and the Tasmanian Government has declared daylight saving each summer since 1968. Persuaded by the Tasmanian Government, all states except two passed a law in 1971, for a test use of daylight saving. In 1972, New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria joined Tasmania for regular daylight saving, but Queensland did not do so until 1989.
Tasmania, Queensland and South Australia have had irregular plans, often changing their dates due to politics or festivals. For example, in 1992, Tasmania extended daylight saving by an extra month while South Australia began extending daylight saving by two weeks for the Adelaide Festival. Special daylight saving plans were made during the sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
The differences in daylight saving in Australia continue to cause serious problems in transport and many other social activities. It also reduces the number of hours in the working day that are common to all centers in the country. In particular, time differences along the east coast cause major difficulties, especially for the broadcasters of national radio and television.

A new United Nations (UN) report says one-fifth of the world's migratory (迁徙的) animals are at risk of disappearing. Animals that migrate move from one area to another at different times of the year.
The threats (威胁) the animals face include habitat loss, illegal hunting, pollution and natural disasters. Many kinds of migratory animals, including songbirds, sea turtles, whales, sharks and others, move to different environments as the seasons change.
The UN report says about 44 percent of migratory species around the world are decreasing in population. In addition, about one in five of 1,200 species watched by the UN are at risk of becoming endangered, or completely disappearing.
These are species that move around the globe. They move to feed and breed and also need sites to stop along the way. Any habitat loss or other threats during their trips can make the animal populations fall. “Migration is important to some species. If you cut the migration, you’re going to kill the species,” said an expert.
The researchers examined existing data, including information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species. The list identifies wildlife across the world facing threats at present.
The report was presented at a meeting of the UN’s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Attendees of the gathering are examining suggestions for conservation measures. They are also working to identify new species of concern. Susan Lieberman is vice president of the international policy at the Wildlife Conservation Society, a non-governmental organization . She said, “One country alone cannot save any of these species. ”
8. What does the UN report mainly show?
A. Most animals are disappearing. B. Migratory species are increasing.
C. Migratory animals face some threats. D. Most species face some natural disasters.
9. What does migration mean to some species according to the expert in Paragraph 4?
A. Losing their competitors. B. A matter of life and death.
C. A lack of food and movement. D. Destroying their habitats.
10. What can we infer from Susan Lieberman's words in Paragraph 6?
A. It is difficult to identify migratory animals.
B. It is impossible to protect migratory animals.
C. Rescuing migratory species depends on policies.
D. Rescuing migratory species requires global efforts.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Human Activities Are Affecting Wildlife

In order to help change our influence on the environment of the earth, a California-based organisation is searching to build an AI language. It can allow people to deeply understand nonhuman languages.
Aza Raskin is the co-founder and president of the Earth Species Project (ESP), an organisation that uses a form of AI to translate non-human languages. ESP wants to use its machine learning technology to understand this important information and make it easily known to the public.
Raskin stressed their purpose to help in the protection by explaining, “The end we are working towards is, we can discover the non-human language, and decode (破译) animal communication. Along the way, what is also important is that we are developing technology that supports scientists and protection.” ESP believes that understanding languages can help deepen our relationship with animals and allow us to better protect them.
In the past, understanding the communication of animals heavily depended on a great deal of observation. Whether it is alarm calls or sounds made by dolphins or elephants, scientists have been amazed by the different forms of non-human communication present in these animals. With the development of new technologies, researchers have now begun to understand a great deal of data they can get through machine learning.
Elodie Briefer, a professor at the University of Copenhagen, has recently helped co-develop a pig grunt (呼噜声) analysing algorithm. It can help scientists understand whether the pigs are expressing positive or negative feelings. However, ESP is doing it differently, by focusing on all kinds of animals, not just one. ESP believes it is likely that social animals communicate with each other, for example, whales and dolphins.
Although ESP believes that understanding AI machine learning data is only one step towards full communication, it believes that one day we will be able to understand entire systems of communication.
12. What is the main goal of the Earth Species Project?
A. To focus on marine animal research.
B. To decode animal communication using AI technology.
C. To develop products featuring animal voices.
D. To replace traditional animal observation methods completely.
13. How did researchers primarily study animal communication in the past?
A. Through extensive observation. B. By focusing only on pig grunts.
C. Using machine learning algorithms. D. By developing AI language models.
14. How does ESP’s approach differ from Elodie Briefer’s research?
A. ESP uses simpler algorithms. B. ESP relies more on human observation.
C. ESP studies a wider range of species. D. ESP ignores emotional aspects of communication.
15. What does ESP believe about the future of understanding animal communication?
A. It will remain limited to simple sounds.
B. Only marine animals can be fully decoded.
C. Only machine learning data will ever be available.
D. Full communication systems may eventually be understood.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

People now have access to more information than ever before thanks to the Internet. While there are clearly benefits to it, there are also unexpected effects. One in particular is information overload, commonly referred to as “inf-obesity”. ___16___
Inf-obesity can be caused by many factors. For example, information from various sources can lead to inf-obesity. A search on a particular topic can bring hundreds of websites with a lot of information, and you may feel very upset due to the amount of information accessible. ___17___. Smart devices provide a person with information constantly, merely to stay updated. As a result, people will load themselves with too much information.
___18___. They indicate that an over-exposure to information can cause people’s behavioural changes. It makes a person tired mentally and physically, directly leading to stress where the person is too tired to carry on any activity. In addition, inf-obesity is the enemy of good decisions. People can probably be at a loss in the face of many possibilities. ___19___.
So, what can be done to reduce the effects of this condition? While there is no easy answer, one obvious step is to limit our sources of information. Sort the information we receive as important and unimportant, and try to only focus on things that really matter to us and on just one thing at a time.
Too much of anything is bad. ___20___, but also to the information that one receives. By taking a certain action, inf-obesity can be controlled at the first stage itself.
A. This applies not only to the food one consumes
B. Experts have shown some major effects of inf-obesity
C. This would give us more room to absorb information from sources
D. Being constantly connected to technology can also result in inf-obesity
E. It involves a situation where there’s too much information on a given topic
F. We are sure about how certain types of information help us get where we want to go
G. One example is that, for online shoppers, a purchase can be difficult with so many choices accessible
【答案】16. E 17. D 18. B 19. G 20. A

47. 阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A boy on skates turned around the corner very fast and crashed into me before I jumped out of the way. We fell together and the box I’d been carrying flew from my hands and landed in the street. A moment later, a car drove past, sending the box spinning in circles. The skater got up, said sorry, and sped away around the corner.
“Are you OK, Emily?” Aiden asked.
“I think so.” I stood up and slowly moved my aching arm.
“Oh no! Look at Mom’s present!” Aiden’s face was red.
I picked up the crushed box and opened it. The flower vases inside were broken. I closed the box and left it in a garbage can on the sidewalk, then started hurrying toward home. Aiden had to run at full speed to keep up with me. When we got to the apartment, we threw ourselves down on chairs in the kitchen.
“It isn’t fair! Why did that happen?” Aiden said.
“I didn’t even see that guy! He came out of nowhere,” I said angrily.
Aiden’s lips trembled. “Mom would love those vases.”
We’d saved our money for weeks to buy vases of pink flowers for Mom’s birthday. We have other vases, but not a full set that matches. I wished I could throw something against the wall and scream, but I knew I couldn’t. I’m the older one. I had to hold it together.
“I want to make her happy,” Aiden said.
“We’ll think of something else to give her as her present,” I said, trying to cheer up Aiden.
“Like what?” he asked. “We don’t have any money left.”

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
I thought hard and said, ” Maybe we can make a present for Mom.” Aiden’s eyes lit up instantly, and he jumped off the chair. We rummaged through the drawer and found a stack of family photos — Mom at the beach, us building a snowman, the three of us laughing at a picnic. We spread them on the table, cut colorful paper borders, and glued everything onto a big cardboard. Aiden drew tiny pink flowers around the edges, and I wrote a note: “To the best mom in the world, love from Emily and Aiden.”
When Aiden saw tears rolling down Mom’s cheeks, he froze for a second, looking worried. But Mom shook her head, wiping her eyes with a grin. “These are happy tears,” she said, holding the collage close. “This is the most wonderful present I’ve ever received.” She knelt down and hugged us tightly, saying the handmade gift meant more than any store-bought item. Later, she hung the collage above the couch, where we see it every day, a reminder that love is the best gift of all.

C. Its plan was changed in 2000. D. It doesn't have fixed dates.
7. What do we know about the use of DST from the last paragraph?
A. There exist some undesirable effects.
B. It helps little to save energy.
C. It brings about longer working days.
D. Radio and TV programs become different.
