At first sight it may seem common, but to those who know its history, it means much more than its appearance would suggest. During holidays, the alley is filled with thousands of visitors each day—attracted there by the story of its creation and the lessons that can be learned from it. Its name comes from the Chinese word for six and chi—a traditional Chinese unit of length that corresponds to one-third of a metre. It was so named because of its width. In the early Qing Dynasty, it served as the boundary (边界) between the households of two families. To the south was the Zhang family and to the north the Wu family. Both had male members in high positions within the court of Emperor Kangxi. But the two families quarrelled(争吵). The point of their quarrel was the boundary between their two houses and which family had the right to build a wall on the dividing line. After trying but failing at mediation(调解), the Zhangs wrote to Zhang Ying, their most prominent family member and a trusted top official in the emperor’s court. His response(回复), which is still celebrated in the form of a poem, did not provide the support for which his family had hoped. Instead, he called for his family to step back one metre from the boundary. His suggestion so moved the two families that both did exactly that. ___▲___ Although the walls by the alley are replicas(仿制品), people are still attracted to the area because of its back story. To them, the story is about how to get along with other people. And it has often been cited to talk about the qualities of a kind person, a cultured family, or a good official. The local government has made great efforts to restore the area to its original glory(昔日辉煌). It was reopened to visitors last year. 1. According to the passage, people go on a visit to Liuchi Alley mostly for its ______. A. nature beauty B. design style C. educational value D. new appearance 2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the story? A. The Zhangs failed in the quarrel at last. B. The Wu family stepped back one metre as well. C. They solved their problem through mediation. D. The two families quarrelled about the length of the alley. 3. Which sentence should be filled in ___▲___? A. So they built the alley. B. As a result, they quarrelled worse. C. Thus the alley was born. D. In this way, the two families became one. 4. What does the last paragraph imply about the alley? A. It’s as good as new now. B. Tourists like its old appearance. C. Restoring it is unnecessary. D. They try to give full play to its role. B I once thought I had superpower in my senior year of high school. I was living with my grandparents at that time. My grandparents had recently been out of work. While they’d managed to save money to buy a house, they didn’t have enough money for living costs. ① So, my grandfather took a job as doorkeeper of the Java school building. Keeping the whole building clean was a stressful job for an old man. Realizing this, I began helping him after school, sweeping rooms and emptying waste baskets, for a small payment. ② When winter arrived, he fired up the school’s furnace(火炉). He quickly realized how difficult it had become for him to shovel (铲) the huge pile of coal to fill in the furnace. I volunteered to take on that job, a promise that required me to get up an hour earlier each morning. I’d go over to the school, and shovel a half ton of coal, enough to keep the fire burning for 24 hours. After finishing that task, I’d return home, change clothes, and eat breakfast. Then I’d rush back to school, always at the last minute. ③ On two mornings, at the very moment I stepped onto the sidewalk(人行道) in front of the school, the first bell rang. That was the signal (信号) for students to go to class. This surprising coincidence caused me to improve my action. I carefully planned each step of my morning activity. I sped myself. Often I’d step onto the school’s sidewalk just as the first bell rang. This effort gave me a huge sense of achievement—and some strange feelings. ④ Twenty years later, at a school get-together, I happened to meet Harold Spiry, the head teacher, who had been in control of ringing the bell by pushing a button(按钮) in his office. I couldn’t stop talking about my superpower. I told Mr Spiry about how I had kept my difficult morning work in good order, how my timing had been perfect. “Oh,” he said. “Do you remember my office windows? I used to look out through the windows. I often saw you coming. And when you hit the sidewalk, I’d ring the bell.” 5. Why did the writer’s grandfather work as a doorkeeper after he was out of work? A. Because he needed the job to support the family. B. Because he was interested in working for extra hours. C. Because he wanted to stay close to his grandson at school. D. Because he found he could be well paid by taking on the job. 6. The sentence “It was during those morning rushes to school that I discovered my superpower.” should be put in ______. A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 7. What does the underlined word “coincidence” mean in Paragraph 4? A. 巧合 B. 举措 C. 业绩 D. 表现 8. How would the writer feel after hearing what Harold Spiry said? A. Proud. B. Surprised. C. Relaxed. D. Calm. 9. What message does the writer’s story express? A. Our dream can be realized through hard work. B. Personal superpower brings people joy and success. C. Careful plans lead to the development of special skills. D. Our achievements are often supported by unseen kindness. 三、阅读表达 The Nobel Prize The Nobel Prizes are among the most important and international prizes in the world.
