In a neighbourhood,a service team of volunteers-
“Shared Children(共享儿女)”一is getting popular.It works
hard to help old people without children around to be happy.
The volunteers already made a big difference in the neigh-
bourhood. They helped more than seventy old people these
days. The volunteers learned about the old people's needs in
their life and gave them a helping hand.
At first, the neighbourhood started a project to help some
people in need in time. However, the neighbourhood did not
have enough workers to help so many old people. So,the idea
of“Shared Children”came out..
The number of the volunteers in the team is more than
108 now. They help the old people buy things, take a walk
with them and cook for them.
▲.Fan Fawen is a retired(退休的)train driver.He
joined the volunteer team two years ago.He often helps to re-
pair something in the old people's homes, buys them fruit
and vegetables and carries heavy things, like bags of rice and
boxes.Liu Chunyan,43,is also one of the volunteers."Many
old people now live alone and feel lonely,so we should help
them and talk with them more often,Liu says.
"More people now start to learn about the team.We be-
lieve that more people will join us in the future,"says Hao
Guoying,a volunteer of the team.

DAs the saying goes,"Give a man a fish, and you feed
him for a day.Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a
lifetime. This is the way the charity organization Heifer Inter-
national(国际小母牛慈善组织)wants to end world hunger..
2It began in the 1930s when an American farmer,Dan
West, went to Spain to help people in need.He tried to feed the
people with milk. But it seemed that there would never be
enough milk.It made him think that what they needed was "not
a cup,but a cow".Dan West returned to America.He worked
together with some friends to find ways to end hunger. He be-
lieved giving animals and providing training would stop world
hunger. With his help,Heifer International was set up.
3On Heifer International's website,you will see a list of
animals like cows, chickens, pigs and even fish and bees. You
can offer help by buying some animals for one certain family.
Those animals will have babies. With more and more animals,
these families will be able to support themselves.Once these
families get better lives, they will pass on the act of kindness
to others.More importantly, you are buying the resources(
for programs run by Heifer International to help more
families.
4The programs also help small-sized farms.As a rule,
each farmer must give his animal's first female()baby to
another in need.Heifer International also provides training on
animals'health and feeding. And these farmers all agree to
teach others what they have learned as another rule.
5However,there is still a long way to go.The milk may
run out.But if families have their own cows, they can get
plenty of milk to feed themselves. The organization wants the
farmers to go on working together, helping each other and
learning from each other.Maybe hunger can really be stopped.

Helping others is not just good for them-it's good for us
too! Here's why helping others is so important.
36 Many of them have difficulty taking the first step
to change.Studies show that helping others can make them
feel better.Why?37 When teenagers reach out to help,
they are showing friendliness.Being kind without expecting
anything in return is a good reason to build friendships.
38 Reminding teammates about key deadlines or
helping them with a task shows that one is willing to work
together and support others. For those who feel lonely and un-
connected, giving a hand and trying to do something helpful
makes it easier to become part of the team.
Teenagers sometimes doubt themselves. But when they
help others,they feel confident,strong and powerful.39
If teenagers make helping others a habit, their confidence will
grow. They will feel more ready to take on challenges in life.
By helping others, young people learn what they enjoy
and what kind of person they want to become.Over time, this
habit of helping others shapes their character.Discovering
their strengths and interests can help them choose careers in
the future.40
