Kimbal Musk recently started the Million Gardens Movement (MGM) to help feed families. The organization aims to become the world’s largest gardener community, helping to fight food insecurity, which affects millions globally.
It all started when Kimbal realized that many people live in food deserts where they have no way to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. With this in mind, he came to the owner of Modern Farmer magazine, Frank Giustra, and asked him to cooperate on the massive project. With Kimbal’s experience in gardening initiatives combined with Frank’s experience in food charity, the two joined forces to create MGM. No matter where the seeds are planted, getting fruits and vegetables is the ultimate goal.
To make it simple for any family to have a garden, the two decided to “provide the families that need it most with a beginner-friendly garden kit”. Called Little Green Gardens, the kits contain ready-to-use fruit and vegetable garden beds. As of now, 5,000 garden kits have already been distributed to help feed families. Along with the tools to grow a garden, each kit contains instructions like soil preparation, plant selection, planting techniques and so on.
Frank says they’ve received a positive response to their mission, which is making a difference. More families have improved their life through it. Many celebrities have gotten on board and been helping to spread the message, using their social media platforms to share the importance of gardening.
“The movement is about reconnecting to our roots, to real food, and to a path to a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. I want to inspire families across America—even the globe—to experience the magic of growing your own food. We can all have an incredible influence on the health and happiness by gardening more,” says Kimbal.
4. What inspired Kimbal to initiate the Million Gardens Movement?
A. Poor conditions in deserts. B. Inaccessibility of fresh food to people.
C. The problem of food safety. D. His experience in gardening initiatives.
5. What can be learned about Little Green Gardens?

C. To show the impact of the movement. D. To prove the importance of gardening.
7. Which words can best describe Kimbal?
A. Caring and ambitious. B. Brave and determined.

Public transportation is the key to a city’s livability. Finland has pioneered a new era in bussing — both in terms of the vehicles themselves and in terms of the experience of riding the bus.
In June, a group of hydrogen-powered buses from Portugal arrived in Finland. For a few months the buses will undergo testing to see how they adapt to Finland’s difficult and changeable weather conditions. If they can resist Finland’s weather, the buses will enter service in late summer or early fall, joining the electric buses that are already on the road.
But what’s so good about hydrogen? According to a report, a 12-meter bus consumes 6-7kg of hydrogen per 100 kilometers, while an 18-meter bus uses less than 9 kg, leading to a substantial reduction in fuel consumption.
These environmentally friendly buses will be first introduced in Jyvaskyla, a city noted for its clean energy initiatives. Its public transportation system already features electric and renewable-fuel vehicles, and it’s home to Finland’s first large-size green hydrogen refueling station, making it an ideal testing ground.
Besides, a new research initiative is using smart systems to monitor the mood inside buses. Using cameras, sensors, and analytics, these systems interpret the passengers’ expressions and movements, helping the operators anticipate potential disturbances or conflicts. “With this technology, we can build smart transport environments where operators, passengers, technology providers, and safety personnel work closely,” said Jani Vare, the head of innovation and IPR at Teleste, one of the companies leading the project.
The project also takes privacy seriously, striving (力争) to balance public safety and individual privacy rights. With its creative use of renewable energy and cutting-edge technology for a better passenger experience, Finland is truly leading the pack.
8. What might be the hydrogen-powered buses’ challenge in Finland?
A. Gaining public acceptance. B. Consuming much less fuel.
C. Surviving the tough climate. D. Competing with electric buses.
9. Why is Jyvaskyla chosen to test the new buses?
A. It owns supporting facilities. B. It features good air quality.
C. It just holds few green buses. D. It has many hydrogen stations.
10. Why are smart systems recommended inside the buses?
A. To reduce the drivers’ workload. B. To ensure a safe bus environment.
C. To help operators to tackle conflicts. D. To identify passengers’ real needs.
11. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Green and Smart; Finland’s New Buses B. On the Move: The Transport Revolution
C. Hydrogen Buses: Finland’s Future Vehicles D. Privacy on Buses: An Emerging Problem
D
Many years ago, I got drunk. The next morning, I told my dad what happened. “We had some wine at the restaurant,” I said, “and then some beer. It doesn’t seem enough for me to feel this bad.” Then my dad said something I carry with me to this day, “Beer before wine and you’ll feel fine; wine before beer and you’ll feel queer (眩晕的).”
Out of all the many pieces of advice my father handed down over the years, only a few stick in my memory. And those are the ones that rhyme. A well-turned phrase has a memorable quality, and rhyming lines are far easier to remember than the contents of an entire book. This is known as the “rhyme-as-reason effect”, a cognitive phenomenon with lots of real-life, practical applications.
For instance, you may have had such an experience: you can remember all the lines of the song from your childhood, yet you can’t remember something that happened last week. This is because when we use rhymes, we break down details into something that can more easily be stored and recovered.
The influence of the “rhyme-as-reason effect” doesn’t stop here. The famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once wrote in one of his books, “Even now...the wisest among us are still occasionally fooled by rhythm — if only insofar as we sometimes consider an idea truer simply because it has a rhyming form and presents itself with a wonderful skip and jump.”
Two psychologists, Matthew McGlone and Jessica Tofighbakhsh, investigated this phenomenon. They presented their participants with a series of aphorisms (格言), some of which are rhymed and others not. They discovered that not only did the participants aesthetically (审美上) prefer the rhymed sentences, but they considered them more accurate. Although the participants agreed that aesthetic qualities don’t represent truth, they couldn’t avoid their own prejudice.
There are two important lessons to learn from this. The first is that rhyming makes for long-term memory. If you want to remember it, rhyme it. The second is that rhyming doesn’t equal accuracy. My dad’s wisdom might sound neat but it is based on insufficient evidence. Keep in mind that a nice turn of phrase isn’t necessarily better than an awkward one.
12. How does the author introduce the concept of the “rhyme-as-reason effect”?
A. By making theoretical explanations. B. By citing related research findings.
C. By referring to experts’ views on it. D. By sharing his personal experience.
13. What does Friedrich Nietzsche say about the “rhyme-as-reason effect”?
A. It can cause us to overlook important details. B. It can lead to failure to identify truly good ideas.
C. It can make us turn a blind eye to the meaning. D. It can prevent us from understanding the real idea.
14. What can we conclude from Matthew and Jessica’s findings?
A. Rhymed sentences are usually less reliable. B. Aesthetic features help clarify the specific fact.
C. People care little about being precise in rhymes. D. Aesthetic features may mislead people’s judgments.
15. What does the author advise us to do according to the last paragraph?
A. Respect the wisdom of our elders. B. Try our best to improve long-term memory.
C. Be wise when dealing with rhymes. D. Take advantage of rhymes when expressing ideas.

Practical Rules of Gardening
You may find nothing is worse than a garden that won’t grow. You’re not alone — many gardeners face the same struggle. ____16____ Either way, these problems can make a garden truly annoying. Check out these tips if you’re sick of a problematic garden and want to see your efforts pay off.
You should make a maintenance schedule. Plants appreciate loving care and will reward you for your providing it. On the contrary, ignoring garden maintenance can do lasting damage to them. You should first familiarize yourself with the needs of your plants. ____17____
You must visit your garden frequently. If you ask experienced gardeners for advice, they will often say, “____18____” It means that the gardeners who spend a lot of time in their gardens notice problems while they are still small and manageable. Regular monitoring is an effective way to detect destructive insects and diseases before they get out of control, and what could be nicer than a daily walk through your own little wonderland?
____19____ Most garden plants prefer a constant amount of soil moisture (水分). To make the job easy, set up a simple irrigation system and put it on a timer. The watering will take care of itself, and your plants won’t have to survive on the changeability of the weather.
It’s best to group plants with similar maintenance needs. People tend to be with others like themselves, as we all know. ____20____ Plants that need good drainage (排水) should be planted together. They should not be mixed in with plants that need very wet soil. Keep this in mind: Group them by their growth and care needs.
A. And it’s true for plants, too.
B. Keeping the water flowing is crucial.
C. It might be poor soil, or disturbing insects.
D. Plants need healthy soil and natural watering.
E. But you can turn things around with right actions.
F. The best thing for a garden is the shadow of the gardener.
G. Then mark the calendar to remind yourself what needs doing.

That day, I was at the airport, waiting to board a flight, which had been delayed. To pass the time, I pulled out my sketchbook (素描本) and pencil from my bag and started drawing.
Not far from me, a young mom was struggling to keep her twins , a boy and a girl about three or four years old, under control. Full of energy, they were climbing on chairs, pulling at her backpack, and running after each other. She was clearly tired, trying her best to keep them close and calm. Occasionally, the twins would wander over to me, looking at my drawings with curious eyes. It was one of the rare moments when they stayed quiet.
Eventually, we boarded. I was surprised to find that the mom and her kids were seated just across the aisle (过道) from me. The twins were in the window and middle seats, and she sat on the aisle. As the plane prepared for takeoff, the kids were still excited, pointing at the safety card and asking questions like “Are we really going to fly?”
But the moment the plane thundered down the runway and lifted off the ground, everything changed. The girl cried first, followed quickly by her brother shouting, “I don’t want to fly anymore I want to get off!” Their cries grew louder and more panicked as the plane climbed. The mom tried desperately to calm them, hugging them across the seats, whispering comforts and her voice starting shaking too.
The cry continued for quite a while. I noticed some passengers in the cabin (机舱) began to look over sympathetically. Someone gave the twins some small toys and cookies to calm them. But they just couldn’t stop. I could feel the mom’s stress and helplessness — she looked as if she might cry too. When my fingers touched the bag with my sketchbook and pencils, I got an idea. Maybe I could do something for the young mom.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
So, I asked if she would like to switch seats with me.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. A

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“There are two important lessons to learn from this. The first is that rhyming makes for long-term memory. If you want to remember it, rhyme it. The second is that rhyming doesn’t equal accuracy. My dad’s wisdom might sound neat but it is based on insufficient evidence. Keep in mind that a nice turn of phrase isn’t necessarily better than an awkward one.(我们可以从中吸取两个重要的教训。第一,押韵有助于长期记忆。如果你想记住它,就把它押韵。第二,押韵并不等于准确。我父亲的智慧听起来可能很巧妙,但它基于不足的证据。请记住,一句巧妙的措辞并不一定比一句笨拙的措辞更好)”可知,作者建议我们在处理押韵时要明智,既要利用押韵的记忆优势,也要警惕其可能带来的误导。故选C项。

【答案】例文
Dear Jack,
I’m Li Hua, a student at our school. Hearing that our school canteen is undergoing upgrades, I’m delighted to share my opinions.
Currently, the canteen lacks variety in the menu, offering almost the same dishes daily, which fails to meet the nutritional needs of growing teenagers. Moreover, the dining hall is often too noisy for us to enjoy meals, and long queues during peak hours waste our time. To address these problems, I suggest introducing more regional cuisines to cater to diverse tastes and opening additional service windows can greatly reduce waiting time, especially during the short lunch break.
I hope these changes will make our canteen more popular.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式作答。
So, I asked if she would like to switch seats with me.

【答案】范文
So, I asked if she would like to switch seats with me. She looked surprised but relieved, quickly agreeing. I moved to her aisle seat, now sitting right beside the twins. Taking out my sketchbook and pencils, I started drawing simple, fun things: a smiling sun, a funny animal, a plane with big wings flying happily. The twins’ cries softened into sniffles as their curious eyes were drawn to the moving pencil.
Within minutes, the cabin grew quiet again. The twins, now calm and focused, watched intently as I drew. Their mother, finally able to relax, gave me a grateful, tearful smile. I continued sketching, occasionally letting them suggest simple things to draw. The boy even shyly pointed to a cloud outside the window, which I added to the picture. As the flight smoothed out, their initial panic replaced by quiet fascination, they eventually drifted off to sleep, heads resting against their seats. The peaceful atmosphere returned, and I felt a warm sense of satisfaction at having helped.
