Unit 2 Growing pains and gains Starting out & Understanding ideas Learning Objectives In this lesson, you will: 1. understand the expectations between the mother and the son by reading the play. 2. analyze the son’s character and evaluate his sense of responsibility. 3. relate the theme to personal experiences, reflect on the concepts of responsibility, promise, and growth. Look and Say 1. What’s in the girl’s hand? A trophy [ˈtrəʊfi]. 2. How do you think she feels? Happy / proud / ... 3. What has she gained? An award. / A sense of achievement. / Confidence. / ... 4. Look at the unit title. How do you understand it? I think when we grow up, we face difficulties and challenges. These are the “pains”. But we also get happiness and achievements while growing up. These are the “gains”. 5. What do you think you will learn in this unit? Starting Out Look at the picture and answer the questions. 1. Do you know the book Anne from Green Gables? Anne of Green Gables is a classic novel by a Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. 《绿山墙的安妮》 This story is about a lively and talkative orphan(孤儿) girl named Anne Shirley. She goes to live with an older brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla, on their farm called Green Gables. The story follows Anne as she makes friends, gets into trouble, and learns important lessons while growing up. It is a warm story about family, friendship, and finding where you belong. 2. What were Anne's "growing troubles"? 1) She was an orphan so she always wanted a family who loved her. 2) She felt shy about her simple clothes and not having much money. 3) Though she worked hard in school, she still felt nervous about tests or worried about she didn’t do well in class. 4) She had a wild and freedom personality, but as she grew up, she had to learn to be more careful and control her temper. Choose two words to show your understanding of growth. Then share them with the class. E.g. I choose challenge and learning. I think growth means facing challenges, like trying something new or difficult. Through these challenges, we keep learning—about the world, about others, and about ourselves. Even if we make mistakes or fail sometimes, that’s how we truly grow. Understanding ideas Tick from the list. What do your parents expect from you? I should always keep my promises. I should never go home late. I should never make my parents worried. I should always make my parents proud. Think and Share 1. What’s the relationship between the two people? Mother and son. 2. How do they feel? The mother seems angry and the boy seems unhappy because he doesn’t accept his mother’s attitude. 3. Read the title. What does it mean? It means that someone feels misunderstood or not listened to. In this lessons, it refers to the communication problem between the mother and the son. You just don’t get me! 你一点不了解(理解)我! Skim Reading Read the play. What does the mother expect from her son? She wants her son to keep promise of coming back before 9 o’clock. She also wants him to call her if there’s an emergency, so she won’t worry. Do you think the mother’s expectation is reasonable? Why or why not? Read again and answer more questions about the play. 1. What was the son’s original promise to his mother? Why did he break it? He promised to arrive home before 9 o’clock, but he broke it because he went back to get phone from his friend’s home, and then on the way, he helped a lost old lady by taking her to the police station. 2. How did the son helped the old woman? List the steps he took. 1. He noticed an old woman under a street lamp and asked if she needed help. 3. Why was the mother angry at first, and why did she become proud in the end? 3. He gave the old woman his jacket and took her to the nearest police station. 2. He checked her information on her wrist band. 4. He waited with the old woman until the policewoman took her home. She was angry because her son broke the promise and came home late without calling her. However, when she learned that her son had helped an old woman, she was proud of his kindness and the sense of responsibility. 4. Why didn't the son call his mother from the police station? What does this tell us about him? Because he didn’t think of that. He is kind and responsible toward strangers, but sometimes forgets to think about his mother's worries. He is a kind, responsible and helpful person, but sometimes  forgets to communicate with his family when he is busy helping others. Learning to think for question 2 To give good advice to others, you should try to understand their point of view. For example, what are their thoughts and feelings? What is the key problem for them? To the son: Always call or text your parents if you’re going to be late, even if you’re doing something good. They don’t know what happens to you, so they will worry. To the mother: Try to listen to your child’s explanation first before getting angry. Good communication needs patience from both sides. Further Thinking Think about a time when you broke a promise to your parent or teacher because of something you thought was important. What did that experience teach you? Language Points 1.
