第五课时 Section B(1a-1e) & Vocabulary in Use 1、 Teaching Objectives In this class, students will: 1. understand the main idea and specific details of the passage. 2. learn and use key reading skills such as skimming for main ideas and scanning for specific information. 3. master important vocabulary and expressions from the passage,and use them in simple contexts. 4. understand the spirits of national pride, teamwork,and perseverance shown in the story of Chinese climbers,and be able to talk about their own thoughts on these qualities. 2、 Teaching Advice Lead-in Look and Say la 1. Present some pictures about Mount Qomolangma and ask students to share what they know about it. 2. Present the answers and the corresponding pictures. The teacher can also present a related video clip to help students have a better understanding. 3. Ask students to complete the information card for Mount Qomolangma using what they have learned.? Pre-reading Free Talk 1. Show some pictures of climbing mountains and ask students to talk about the following questions. · Have you ever climbed mountains? · How did you feel? ◆ What challenges are there when climbing very high mountains like Qomolangma? 2. Invite some students to share their answers. During the process,the teacher can pre-teach the new words and expressions in the article. Predict Present the two pictures in lb and the title. Have students predict what may be talked about in the article. The teacher can provide the following options for students to tick. · The dangers and difficulties of climbing Qomolangma · A story about climbing Qomolangma · The history of climbing Qomolangma · How to prepare for climbing Qomolangma · Why people climb Qomolangma · Environmental problems on Qomolangma While-reading Skim Reading 1. Ask students to read the article quickly and summarize the main idea of each paragraph. If it's hard for students,the teacher can provide the main ideas for them to match with the correct paragraph. 2. Guide students to divide the article into three parts according to the main ideas so that students can grasp the structure of the article. Careful Reading 1b 1. Explain the reading skill (scanning) to students in 1b. Remind them to pay attention to the numbers and the words that start with capital letters while reading. 2. Ask students to read the target information to know what they read for and grasp the target information in the article. 3. Invite some students to share answers in class. 1c 1. Ask students to read the instruction and make sure they understand the meaning. Explain the word“opposite”if necessary. Invite some students to explain the meaning of each word. 2.Have students do the matching exercise and then check in pairs. 3. Check the answers with the whole class and encourage students to list more words with opposite meanings. 2b 1. Have students read and translate the questions. Make sure they know the meanings of these question words with how. 2. Write how and the words on the blackboard. Have students say their meanings as quickly as possible. 3. Invite some students to make sentences using these how question words. 2c 1. Have students skim the passage and get the main idea. Show some pictures of Lake Baikal and add some background information. 2. Ask students to complete the passage with the correct forms of the words in the box and check the answers in pairs. 3.
