Grammar Focus(4a-4d) Learning Objectives In this lesson you will: 1. summarize the usage of the reflexive pronouns. 2. master the usage of the modal verb “should” and “could” for advice. 3. talk about health problems using the target language. Look and Say —What’s wrong with the boy? —He has a stomachache./ His stomach aches. Because he ate too much yesterday. —What do you think he should do? —I think he should take some medicine and shouldn’t eat so much next time. —What’s the matter with the girl? —She has a bad toothache because she ate too many sweet things. —What do you think she should do? —I think she should see a dentist and avoid sweet things. —What’s wrong with the boy? —He fell off his bike and hurt himself. —What do you think he should do? —I think he should go to the doctor and be more careful next time. —What’s wrong with the girl? —She has a fever and feels sick. —What do you think she should do? —I think she should drink more water and have a good rest. Read the sentences. Underline the modal verbs for advice and circle the reflexive pronouns. What’s wrong? I ate too much last night. Now my stomach aches. You shouldn’t eat so much next time. What’s the matter? I have a really bad toothache. You should see the dentist and get an X-ray. You could eat some soft food for now. How did you hurt yourself? I hurt myself when I fell off my bike. Be more careful next time. If we are not careful, we can easily hurt ourselves. 4a Think and Share What are the modal verbs should and could used for in these sentences? Which one gives stronger advice , should or could ? 情态动词表示建议或提议 1)should 情态动词should作“应该;应当;可以”讲,用以表达职责和义务、提出劝告,而且表述的是自己的主观看法,其后接动词原形。should 的否定式是should not / shouldn't,意思是“不应当;不该”。 e.g. When you have the flu, you should wear a mask when you're outside. e.g. We shouldn't judge a book by its cover. 2)could could也用于提出建议,意为“可以;不妨”,表较委婉、试探性的建议,其后接动词原形。 e.g. —What should I take with me to the party? —You could take some fruit or flowers. e.g. If you want to say sorry, you could call him. 反身代词(Reflexive Pronouns) 反身代词是英语中表达“……自己;本身”含义的一类代词,是在第一人称、第二人称形容词性物主代词或第三人称人称代词宾格形式的词尾加-self或-selves组成。 数 第一人称 第二人称 第三人称 单数 myself yourself himself herself itself 复数 ourselves yourselves themselves 反身代词的用法 1)作动词或介词的宾语 e.g. Be careful when you're using the knife!
