Claude Monet started the Impressionist movement that completely changed the face of French painting in the second half of the 19th century. He was greatly influenced by Claude Monet and Berthe Morisot, which can be seen in his use of light shades. Most of his paintings show scenes from daily life on the streets of Paris.
Camille Pissarro

Pedro Soto, a 56-year-old school teacher, had a sore throat, so he went to the doctor, believing he suffered from an infection by some virus. However, after his doctors did a blood test, they found it was type 2 diabetes (糖尿病). Medicine to get it under control was immediately recommended, but Soto was determined to try something different.
Inspired by one of his co-workers whose husband ran the marathon, Soto applied to the TCS Marathon through an application specifically made for teachers. He had to share an article in which he spoke about his illness and was ultimately selected for the team. As he trained and developed a running habit, he received regular blood tests, and three months later, his blood sugar became normal.
The marathon took place last November. Soto wasn’t able to consistently train until the beginning of August, because in June, he was also diagnosed (诊断) with Lyme disease. It was also during this time that Soto’s father passed away. Still, he used his runs as opportunities to release bad feelings and to build his strength back from being sick.
“For me, it is amazing. It is like a block party, but the block party is the whole city,” he says. “During the race, you’re pounding for hours, the same joints, the same bones and muscles. Something’s beginning to feel pain, but the noise of the people out there, the music, the cheers... everything is louder than your pain.”

Soto shares that his students are a motivating factor for him to recover his health. “If I’m sick and don’t feel good, that is going to affect my instruction in the classroom, my relationship with the students, and eventually the quality of me as a teacher! Teachers get burned out because sometimes they don’t balance their lives. This TCS Marathon was a great opportunity for me to balance my life.”

Regularly spending time in a sauna (桑拿房) may help keep the heart healthy and extend life, say Finnish scientists in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland (UEF) studied 2,300 middle-aged men for an average of 20 years. They divided the men into three groups according to how often they used a sauna each week. Over the course of the study, 49% of men who went to a sauna once a week died, compared with 38% of those who went two to three times a week and just 31% of those who went four to seven times a week. Frequent visits to a sauna were also linked with lower death rates from heart disease.
The results don’t surprise Dr Thomas H. Lee, founding editor of the Harvard Heart Letter. “The beneficial effects of a sauna have been well documented in the past. It lowers blood pressure, and there is every reason to believe that its effects are good for your heart,” says Dr Lee.
Sauna use is deeply rooted in Finnish culture. A nation of 5.5 million people, Finland has as many saunas as television sets — around 3.3 million. Most of the saunas are in people’s homes, although they’re also in offices and factories.
The very nature of the Finnish sauna is designed to reduce stress, the researchers say. The sauna has been a gathering place for family and friends for centuries. And a basic sauna rule, which discourages people from discussing controversial topics while bathing, is taught to the Finns during childhood.
The Finnish researchers suggest that saunas may provide similar benefits to exercise because the high temperatures can drive heart rates to levels often achieved by moderate-intensity (中等强度的) physical activities.
So can sitting in a sauna take the place of exercising? “I don’t know if I would take a sauna for exercise,” Dr Lee says. “But exercising and then taking a sauna seems like a very healthy lifestyle.”
8. What do the numbers in Paragraph 2 show?
A. It can be harmful to use a sauna too often.
B. Regular sauna users are likely to live longer.
C. Different people have different sauna habits.
D. Saunas may lower death rates from heart disease.
9. What does Dr Lee think of UEF researchers’ findings?
A. They are amazing. B. They are interesting.
C. They match his expectations. D. They go against past documents.
10. What do we know about the Finnish sauna?
A. It is easily accessible to the Finns. B. It encourages people to debate.
C. It is a completely new lifestyle. D. It attracts more children than adults.
11. Which may be the best for your health according to Dr Lee?
A. Having as many saunas as possible.
B. Using a sauna after doing physical activities.
C. Doing physical exercise in high temperatures.
D. Taking moderate-intensity physical exercise.

Rising sea levels, extremes of weather and more droughts and floods will all destroy the world’s energy systems as global warming picks up its pace, a new report has found.
Energy companies are quite often cited as part of the problems of climate change, generating the lion’s share of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, amounting to around 60% of the total. But they will also suffer as global warming worsens.
Many large plants are particularly threatened by floods because they lack protection from sudden storms. Electricity distribution networks are also likely to be affected.
Christoph Frei, secretary general of WEC, said governments must play a key role in ensuring the world’s important infrastructure is protected. Climate change is certain to affect the energy sector. We need powerful policy frameworks to unlock the long-term investments that are urgently needed to deliver the future we want. Leadership will be required at all levels.
Despite efforts to increase energy efficiency, the amount of energy used globally is still set to rise. But the effects of this could be reduced if companies spend more energy on renewable and low-carbon forms of energy.
However, there is little sign so far that energy companies around the world have got this message. Fossil fuels continue to dominate new investment in energy generation capacity, according to the International Energy Agency. Besides, we have failed in creating a global price for carbon emissions, which could help to reverse this trend.
Another key focus must be energy distribution networks, according to the report, as new technology can be used to make them “smart”, saving energy by distributing energy from generators to users in more intelligent ways.
“The time has come to get real about the challenges facing the energy sector,” Frei said.
Philipes Joubert, executive chairman of WEC’s global electricity initiative and former president of Alstom Power, said large companies are taking note. “Leading businesses in this sector are increasingly realising that business as usual is no longer acceptable.”
12. Why are the energy companies also sufferers?
A. They are responsible for climate chang
B. Their greenhouse gas emissions make up 60% of the tota
C. Some sudden natural disasters have a great effect on the
D. The government provides no protection for the
13. What does the underlined phrase “taking note” in the last paragraph refer to?
A. Noticing. B. Missing. C. Writing. D. Arguing.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the present energy systems?
A. Positive. B. Concerned. C. Optimistic. D. Uncertain.
15. What can be the best title for this passage?
A. Energy Companies Are to Blame for Their Behaviours
B. Renewable and Low-carbon Forms of Energy Will Be a Trend
C. Energy Distribution Networks Must Be Smarter
D. The World’s Energy Systems Suffer from Climate Change

The community library was Megan’s peaceful kingdom, a place of quiet whispers and turning pages. Every summer vacation, she worked as a student volunteer, feeling responsible for protecting this quiet space.
Lately, a boy named Liam had become her challenge. Liam wasn’t rude — he just couldn’t sit still. Like clockwork, he would get up to “stretch his legs, ”pacing between the bookshelves. Sometimes he’d accidentally knock over a chair. Once, absorbed in a picture book, he let out a loud“Whoa!”when he saw a giant dinosaur filled the page. In the silence, each sound drew looks from other readers.
Yesterday, when Megan walked over and reminded him gently again, Liam’s face turned red. “I’m really sorry, ”he whispered sincerely. “I don’t mean to. I just. I really like being here. ”She believed him. She had noticed that Liam was a curious explorer of books. He would pull out a book on dinosaurs, reading with intense focus for a few minutes, then move on to another about volcanoes or space rockets. He just loved the library.
Megan went back to her office. A note on the head librarian’s desk caught her eye. It read, “More Lively Reading Activities? Book sharing? Acting?” Seeing this, Megan suddenly remembered the librarian had mentioned she could feel free to use the garden at the back of the library. It was a place where some unused items were stored — some old chairs, folding tables, all piled up gathering dust under a large tree. At the time, Megan hadn’t thought much about it. But now, the thoughts of directing Liam’s energy and making use of the garden connected in her mind. Perhaps the solution wasn’t to quiet Liam down, but to give his energy and love for books a positive stage, right here in their own library.
An idea for a “Garden Reading Corner”project, aimed at young readers, began to take shape. The next morning, she found Liam among the bookshelves. “Want to do something really cool?”she said, her voice low but excited. Liam did not answer at once, but the eager light in his eyes said everything.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
For the next week, Megan and Liam busied themselves with the project.

【答案】
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an art class I had in a park last Friday.
We were tasked to draw or paint something that impressed us most. Inspired by the fantastic scenery, I decided to create a watercolor painting of the small bridge over the park’s pond, surrounded by blooming flowers.
The entire experience was incredibly refreshing. Being surrounded by nature not only sparked my creativity but also offered a much-needed break from the usual hustle and bustle of school life. I felt a deep sense of peace as I painted.
In a word, it was not just an art class; it was a moment of connection with nature that I truly cherished.

第三节 读后续写 (总分25分)
57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
For the next week, Megan and Liam busied themselves with the project. They first cleaned the messy garden, moving old chairs and folding tables to a sunny spot under the big tree. Liam scrubbed the dirt off the furniture and arranged them in a circle for kids. Megan brought colorful posters of dinosaurs and space — Liam’s favorite — and they hung them on the tree. They also picked out a lot of picture books and storybooks for young readers and placed them on a wooden shelf from the storage. Every evening, they discussed fun activities like book sharing and role-playing, with Liam coming up with many creative ideas.
On the opening day of the project, they waited nervously in the garden. Soon many kids came, attracted by the colorful posters and interesting books. Liam became a great guide: he read dinosaur stories aloud and acted out some parts with vivid gestures, making everyone laugh happily. The garden was filled with soft laughter and reading voices, never disturbing the quiet inside the library. The head librarian came and praised them warmly, saying the garden reading corner was a wonderful addition. Megan smiled, knowing she had found the best way to let Liam’s energy shine and keep the library quiet.
