The Age of Exploration was a period when adventurers set out to find new sea routes, a pursuit that fundamentally reshaped humanity’s geographical understanding of the planet. Here are four key figures from different nations whose discoveries had a lasting impact.
Meriwether Lewis
Leading the Lewis and Clark Expedition (航行) (1804-1806), this American explorer was appointed by President Thomas Jefferson to map the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. His team journeyed from the Mississippi River to the Pacific, documenting new species and establishing relations with Native tribes (部落). This journey opened the American West to settlement, connecting the nation from coast to coast.
Ferdinand Magellan
Sailing for Spain, this Portuguese explorer organized the first expedition to encircle the globe in 1519. Though he was killed in the Philippines in 1521, one of his ships completed the voyage in 1522. This historic journey proved the world was round, linked the world’s oceans, and revealed the vastness of the Pacific.
James Cook
This British naval captain led three groundbreaking voyages across the Pacific in the late 18th century. He mapped the eastern coast of Australia, charted New Zealand’s coastline, and explored numerous Pacific islands. Cook’s accurate mappings and scientific observations greatly expanded European knowledge of the Pacific region and established new connections between Europe and the South Pacific.
Marco Polo
This Venetian trader traveled the Silk Road to China in the 13th century, spending 17 years in Asia. His detailed accounts of Asian cultures, technologies, and wealth introduced Europeans to a previously unknown world. His book, The Travels of Marco Polo, inspired generations of future explorers and helped bridge the cultural divide between the East and the West.
1. What did Lewis’ team document?
A. The geography of the Silk Road. B. New species along their journey.
C. Cultural customs in ancient China. D. Asian technologies in the 13th century.
2. Which explorer mapped the eastern coast of Australia?
A. James Cook. B. Marco Polo.
C. Meriwether Lewis D. Ferdinand Magellan.
3. What do the four explorers have in common according to the text?

Richard Parks’ greatest challenge occurred long before he ever climbed a mountain. In 2009, the Welsh professional rugby player saw his career suddenly cut short by injury and subsequent surgery. “It was heartbreaking,” he recalls. “I had been Richard Parks the Rugby Player. If I wasn’t that person, who was I?”
After weeks of low spirits, he found inspiration in a meaningful line that read, “The horizon (地平线) is only the limit of our sight,” and in the life story of polar explorer Ranulph Fiennes. He set an ambitious new goal: to climb the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. “I needed a physical, emotional and cognitive challenge,” he says.
Driven and determined, Parks made a remarkable recovery. Only two years after his injury, in 2011, he became the fastest person to complete the Explorer’s Grand Slam — climbing the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and reaching both Poles in just 7 months. In 2014, he earned another Guinness World Record as the first person of color to ski solo, unsupported and unassisted, to the South Pole. He now holds four world records and views each expedition (探险) as a form of treatment. “I needed to gain control back in my life,” he reflects.
Recently, Parks guided actor Will Smith across Antarctica for the National Geographic series Pole to Pole. In extreme cold and unpredictable conditions, he helped Smith experience the raw challenge of polar adventure, “Smith just grew through everything we threw at him,” Parks says. Smith even became one of the few people ever to ski to the South Pole.
Parks credits his parents for his ability to bounce back. Though not athletes, they taught him the value of stepping outside comfort zones. Today, as a filmmaker, author and father, he believes in making adventure accessible so others can “see themselves in it.”
His next mission will follow Matthew Henson’s 1909 journey to the North Pole, documented in the film Whiteout. For Parks, exploration remains a path to growth and connection. “I often say that mountains saved my life,” he admits. “The end of my rugby career felt like the end of me — but it also led to the best things that ever happened.”
4. What inspired Parks after his rugby career ended?
A. His friends’ encouragement. B. Will Smith’s polar adventure.
C. A quote and a polar explorer’s story. D. A National Geographic series.
5. What did Parks achieve in 2011?
A. Skiing to the South Pole. B. Filming the series Pole to Pole.
C. Guiding Will Smith across Antarctica. D. Completing the Explorer’s Grand Slam.
6. What message does the text mainly deliver?
A. Rugby is better than polar exploration. B. Misfortune can lead to new opportunities.
C. Explorers must have athletic backgrounds. D. World records are easy for former athletes.
7. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A sports magazine. B. A medical textbook.
C. A travel guidebook. D. A cooking recipe.

Winter, with its shorter days and longer nights, naturally invites us to slow down, seek comfort, and adopt a gentler rhythm in our daily lives. Interestingly, adjusting our eating patterns — specifically, having dinner earlier during these months — can contribute significantly to our physical and mental well-being. According to health insights from sources such as The Conversation and The Jerusalem Post, shifting your last meal to an earlier time in winter can offer multiple benefits, from supporting metabolism (新陈代谢) to lifting mood.
This idea is rooted in our body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm. This natural cycle is closely tied to sunlight exposure, regulating hormones (激素), sleep, and digestion. In winter, daylight diminishes earlier, signaling the body to begin slowing down its functions sooner. Eating late in the evening can conflict with this rhythm, potentially upsetting metabolic processes. By finishing dinner earlier — ideally between 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm, or at least before 8:00 pm — you allow your body time to digest food before sleep. This practice can help maintain healthier blood sugar levels and improve sleep quality, leading to deeper, more restorative sleep and improved overnight recovery.
Furthermore, regular late-night eating has been linked to risks such as weight gain and metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes. An earlier dinner helps the body process nutrients more efficiently and reduces the likelihood of metabolic stress. For individuals with busy schedules, a strict early dinner may not always be possible; however, aiming to eat between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm offers a flexible and still beneficial option.
Mood regulation is another important aspect. Reduced sunlight in winter can lower serotonin levels — a key hormone that helps stabilize mood. Eating earlier, combined with regular physical activity, supports better energy regulation and may help ease seasonal low mood. Additionally, keeping a consistent eating window and timing meals around exercise can enhance overall daily rhythm and promote a sense of routine, which is especially valuable during the darker, quieter winter months.
8. What does the underlined word “diminishes” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Dies down. B. Grows stronger.
C. Comes up. D. Stays stable.
9. What time is recommended for busy people to have dinner?
A. 5:00 pm—7:00 pm. B. 6:00 pm—8:00 pm.
C. Before 5:00 pm. D. After 8:00 pm.
10. What can be concluded about consistent late-night eating?
A. It benefits metabolic processes. B. It is acceptable for busy people.
C. It helps regulate circadian rhythm. D. It may harm physical and mental health.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Why Winter Habits Improve Sleep Quality. B. How You Can Adapt to Winter’s Shorter Days.
C. Why You Should Eat Dinner Earlier in Winter. D. How Circadian Rhythm Affects Eating Times.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

根据第二段中的“In winter, daylight diminishes earlier, signaling the body to begin slowing down its functions sooner.(在冬天,日光更早地diminishes,这向身体发出信号,使其功能更早开始减缓)”并结合常识可知,冬天白天时间短,日光会更早减弱,因此猜测“Dies down”有“减弱,逐渐平息”之意,与diminishes同义,故选A项。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“For individuals with busy schedules, a strict early dinner may not always be possible; however, aiming to eat between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm offers a flexible and still beneficial option.(对于日程繁忙的人来说,严格早点吃晚餐可能并不总是可行;然而,目标设定在下午6点到8点之间吃晚餐是一个灵活且仍然有益的选择)”可知,对于忙碌的人,推荐在下午6点到8点之间吃晚餐,故选B项。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Furthermore, regular late-night eating has been linked to risks such as weight gain and metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes.(此外,经常深夜进食与体重增加和代谢紊乱等风险有关,包括2型糖尿病)”以及第四段“Mood regulation is another important aspect. Reduced sunlight in winter can lower serotonin levels — a key hormone that helps stabilize mood. Eating earlier, combined with regular physical activity, supports better energy regulation and may help ease seasonal low mood.(情绪调节是另一个重要方面。冬天阳光减少会降低血清素水平——一种有助于稳定情绪的关键激素。早点吃饭,结合定期的体育活动,有助于更好地调节能量,并可能有助于缓解季节性的情绪低落)”可知,经常深夜进食可能会损害身心健康,故选D项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段中“nterestingly, adjusting our eating patterns — specifically, having dinner earlier during these months — can contribute significantly to our physical and mental well-being. According to health insights from sources such as The Conversation and The Jerusalem Post , shifting your last meal to an earlier time in winter can offer multiple benefits, from supporting metabolism ( 新陈代谢 ) to lifting mood.(有趣的是,调整我们的饮食方式 —— 尤其是在这几个月里提早吃晚餐—— 能对我们的身心健康起到显著作用。据《对话》和《耶路撒冷邮报》等渠道的健康观点显示,冬天将最后一餐提前,能带来多种益处,从促进新陈代谢到改善情绪)”可知,文章主要介绍在冬季由于昼短夜长的特点,调整饮食模式,尤其是早点吃晚餐,对身心健康有益,并阐述了其背后的生物钟原理以及带来的具体好处。C选项“Why You Should Eat Dinner Earlier in Winter(为什么你应该在冬天早点吃晚餐)”为最佳标题,故选C项。

I am standing on Macquarie Island, in the South-west Pacific Ocean, halfway between Australia and Antarctica. No visitor would think it surprising that the island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
But the island’s more recent history tells a different story. It’s a tragic story that began in 1810 when humans arrived on the island. In their ships they unknowingly brought rats and mice. These small animals quickly took over the island, eating the birds’ eggs and attacking baby birds. Cats were brought to the island to control the rats and mice. Unfortunately, the cats subsequently developed an appetite for the birds, too.
Meanwhile, rabbits were introduced to the island as a source of food for humans. Loose on the island, they did what rabbits do best — they multiplied rapidly and began eating the native vegetation and digging holes, which caused soil erosion. The exploding rabbit population provided plentiful food for the cats, meaning that the number of cats also increased. This in turn led to more cats hunting the birds. The end result was that parakeets, once large in number and native to the island, died out in 1891.
Even after Macquarie Island became an official nature reserve in the 1970s, the rabbits remained out of control. Experts felt it necessary to come up with a plan to remove all the rabbits from the island. With this goal in mind, a virus was released onto the island.
But as the saying goes, “While the cat’s away, the mice will play.” With the departure of the cats from the island, the mouse and rat population started to increase. In 2006, the rabbits’ digging caused some land to collapse, and killed a substantial number of penguins. This incident made it clear that the rat, mouse and rabbit problem needed solving once and for all.
So, I am here on Macquarie Island to participate in the programme to tackle this very problem. The first step involved poison being dropped from helicopters. The next step is to remove the last remaining invading species, and that’s where I come in. This intervention is a long, much-delayed ending to a sad story, but we humans owe it to the island to give it a happy ending.
12. What happened to Macquarie Island in 1810?
A. Planting began on the island.
B. The island was occupied by rabbits.
C. The island was destroyed by cats.
D. Humans arrived on the island with rats and mice.
13. The main purpose of bringing rabbits to Macquarie Island was ________.
A. to control the rat population B. to provide food for humans
C. to improve the soil quality D. to attract tourists
14. Why did I come to Macquarie Island?
A. To enjoy the beauty of the island. B. To spend my holiday with friends.
C. To investigate the damage to the island. D. To solve the problem of foreign species.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Macquarie Island’s unique scenery.
B. How did mankind destroy Macquarie Island?
C. Macquarie Island battles invasive species with recovery efforts.
D. All kinds of creatures live in harmony in Macquarie Island.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C

Most importantly, bring plenty of drinking water for everyone. 故选A项。

【答案】One possible version:
Dear Tom,
Hope you’re doing well. I’m writing to share a meaningful experience with you. Over the past several months, I have made weekly observations of a rose in the park near my home, carefully recording its growth — from the sprouting of buds in spring, to its beautiful bloom in summer, and even its withering in late autumn.
This experience taught me so much. Not only did I learn about the rose’s growth cycle, but I also cultivated patience and attentiveness. Moreover, these weekly moments in nature relaxed me and helped relieve the pressure of my studies.
Have you ever had a similar experience? Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The annoying, on-and-off beeping (哔哔声) of the smoke detector woke us up at 4:00 am. My husband George, 65, insisted on changing the battery by himself, brushing off my concerns about the 10-foot-high attic (阁楼). “Piece of cake,” he said with a know-it-all smile. Even though I thought it was a bad idea, I held the ladder as he climbed up into the narrow door of the attic. He replaced the battery quickly, and I sighed with relief — until he tried to climb down.
When George tried to swing his leg over the edge of the attic opening to get back to the ladder, he missed the rungs (横档) of the top step. I told him to shift left and right to reach them, but he only ended up lying flat right at the attic entrance, one arm hanging over the edge, stuck and unable to move. The confidence he’d had earlier turned into frustration, and I felt panic rising inside me. I didn’t want to bother the neighbors — it was the middle of the night, too late to wake anyone up, and they probably wouldn’t know how to get him down safely anyway — so I had no choice but to call the local fire department.
I waited anxiously, my eyes fixed on George, not daring to leave him alone. Ten minutes later, a large red fire-rescue truck pulled up. Three firefighters — Brandon, Jonathan, and Marty — stepped out, maintaining their professionalism as they approached the house. I hurried to let them in and quickly explained the situation.
The firefighters quickly assessed the situation. They looked up at George right at the attic entrance, then checked our household ladder and shook their heads — it wasn’t stable enough for a safe rescue. After a brief exchange, they decided to use their professional equipment to avoid any accidents. Hearing their plan, George sighed in relief, knowing he was in capable hands.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Jonathan and Brandon got a stronger ladder from their vehicle. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With Marty’s steady guidance, the two climbed down step by step. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Jonathan and Brandon got a stronger ladder from their vehicle. This ladder, designed specifically for rescue operations, was far more stable than our household one. They positioned it firmly beneath the attic opening, each securing one side of the base. Marty, the most experienced of them, climbed up alone, pausing at a safe distance below George. “Take it easy, sir. I’ll get you down,” he said reassuringly, reaching up to grasp George’s wrist. He guided George to sit up slowly, then helped him swing his legs over the edge one by one and plant his feet securely on the rungs.
With Marty’s steady guidance, the two climbed down step by step. Once on the floor, George leaned against the wall for a moment to regain his composure, his face still flushed but filled with gratitude. He shook each firefighter’s hand warmly, repeating his thanks. “I can’t believe I got myself into this mess — thank you for coming so quickly and getting me down safely,” he said, his voice soft with embarrassment. Brandon patted his shoulder gently and said, “That’s what we’re here for. Just glad you’re safe.” George nodded, already resolving to never be so stubborn again.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
