He says one submerged village, called Tel Hreiz, sits 5 to 10 feet below the surface of the water. The community was ___12___ some 7,000 years ago. And the researchers also found a 300-foot-long stretch of huge boulders — a wall. After ___14___ out other possible uses for the wall — like defense against enemies or corralling animals — the scientists determined that the formation was actually an ancient seawall, the oldest known example in the world. The results are in the journal PLOS ONE. The boulders that kept the waters of the Mediterranean from ___15___ the village came from riverbeds a mile or two away. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. (A) I’m in Marrakech, the heart of Morocco at the base of the Atlas Mountains, with my son, Sam. He’s eight. We’ve come here with Mohamed, a friend who owns a store in our New York neighborhood. We’re regular customers at Mohamed’s store, where Sam can often be found negotiating with his friend. When they’re not bargaining, they’re chatting about swords, or camels, or the desert. “You need to come to Marrakech,” Mohamed told me. “I’ll show you around and teach Sam how to really get a bargain!” So here we are. We meet up with Mohamed over a cup of tea at a table outside the tiny Café ben Youssef, deep in the old city of Marrakech. We’re sitting in an area bordering the stalls of the marketplace. Vendors with carts offer freshly squeezed orange juice, others sell dates or figs. Nearby are the workshops that supply the goods to this world-famous market. Later, as we walk around, Mohamed begins the first of his bargaining tutorials for Sam. “Everything in Morocco is open to negotiation, Sam. When you hear a price, the first thing you say is Too much-bezaf and then walk away.” “But what if I like it?” “When you see something you like, maybe a lamp, you ask about something else instead. Then, as you walk out, you ask, ‘And how much is that lamp?’ as though you’d just noticed it and aren’t really that interested in it.” We turn a corner and are greeted with sweet-smelling orange blossoms. “Don’t always give an offer. Make them continue to lower the price. Oh, and wear something Moroccan,” Mohamed continues, as we enter a fairly large shop. Most of the stalls in Marrakech specialize in one thing, but not this one. Decorative and lethal-looking swords hang beside soft hand-dyed fabrics; large camel bones covered in writing sit beside massive copper lamps. It is here that Sam spots a box. “Look, a treasure chest!” It’s made of wood and painted red and gold. He opens the lid, then closes it. “Cool.” Then he spots a tall, cobalt blue, tear-shaped old perfume bottle. “Four hundred dirham,” the shopkeeper pronounces. Fifty dollars. Sam says nothing. Whether he’s too shy or is practicing Mohamed’s bargaining technique, I can’t tell. He eventually agrees to pay 200 dirham, about $24. I’d say the bottle is worth $10, at most. Clearly, his negotiating skills need a little work. “Just to get started, Dad,” Sam says to me as he pays for the bottle. 36. Why did the author decide to bring Sam to Marrakech? A. Because Sam had been begging to see camels and the desert for a long time. B. Because Mohamed promised to teach Sam the art of bargaining in person. C. Because the author wanted to buy swords at a better price in the local market. D. Because Mohamed’s store in New York was closing and they needed a farewell trip. 37. What does Mohamed advise Sam to do when he finds something he likes? A. To look for something similar in another shop. B. To complain to the vendor about its high price. C. To conceal his real preference from the vendor. D. To ask the vendor about the price as soon as possible. 38. What does the writer imply about Sam’s first negotiating experience? A. It is far from successful. B. It is a good opportunity for practice. C. It reveals Sam’s potential in negotiation. D. It shows that Sam is too shy for negotiation. 39. Then, as you walk out, you ask, ‘And how much is that lamp?’ as though you’d just noticed it and aren’t really that interested in it.”(“当你看到你喜欢的东西,比如一盏灯,你就问别的东西。 根据最后一段中“I’d say the bottle is worth $10, at most. Clearly, his negotiating skills need a little work. “Just to get started, Dad,” Sam says to me as he pays for the bottle.(我想说这个瓶子最多值10美元。 故选A。 【39题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段中““You need to come to Marrakech,” Mohamed told me. “I’ll show you around and teach Sam how to really get a bargain!” So here we are.(“你需要来马拉喀什,”穆罕默德告诉我。“我带你四处看看,教萨姆如何真正讨价还价!”所以我们来了。)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者带儿子萨姆到马拉喀什,朋友穆罕默德教萨姆讨价还价技巧及萨姆的首次尝试,因此选项D“The Art of the Deal(交易的艺术)”最符合文章主旨。故选D。 (B) Which Way Home, a documentary by Rebecca Cammisa, charts the journeys to Mexican and Central American children who leave their home countries to come to the United States riding on top of a train they call “La Bestia” (the beast). All of the children dream of a better life for themselves and their families. Some of them hope to reunite with family members in the U. S. Others have dreams of going to school or getting a job so they can send money back home. Kevin Fourteen-year-old Kevin is from Honduras. So England’s 27,000 parks are considered as financial liabilities rather than the amazing asset to our health and wellbeing that any of their 37 million regular users could prove. Our green spaces are shrinking and decaying despite the fact that they deliver a range of ecosystem services such as improving air and water quality, lowering the risk by absorbing water run-off, and cooling the urban environment as well as providing much-needed space for wildlife. By using a “natural capital” accountancy approach that puts a value on all these social, environmental and economic contributions, scientists discovered that for every £1 spent on its parks, they produce £34 of benefits. Yet this true value is not widely measured or recognized. Ian Walmsley, a green space manager in England, said that “an argument has never been successfully made that if you spend X on a park, there will be a saving in the health budget and therefore you should take money out of the health budget and put it into parks.” As a result, the government inquiry report published last week warned that parks are at a tipping point of decline, spoiled by a 92% reduction in their budgets since 2010 because of local authority cuts. Less money means less maintenance, more litter and uncivilized behavior and gradually much-loved local parks have been turned into dangerous eyesores. Tragically it’s the small, green spaces in poorer, built-up areas that suffer most from the disproportionate cuts to maintenance. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Andrew Hinchley, green space development officer at the London Borough of Camden, said that if we had new ways of valuing the services parks provide for improving water quality, for example, then you could ask water companies to pay towards their upkeep. The local government is urged to publish strategic plans to recognize the real value of parks and to set out how they will be managed to maximize their contribution to wider local authority goals such as promoting healthier lifestyles. It is suggested that the government’s health strategy could fund parks. It could be a legal requirement for councils to produce such strategies. 43. We can learn from Paragraph 1 that from an traditional accounting perspective, parks are considered ________. A. more a burden than a treasure B. more beneficial than harmful C. more a provider than a consumer D. more uncontrollable than manageable 44. We can learn from Paragraph 2 that the writer is________. A. sure that parks in built-up areas will be better funded B. confused why a 92% reduction is a tipping point of decline C. dissatisfied that money put into parks comes from the health budget D. upset by the fact that underfunded parks give rise to some social problems 45. According to the passage, the writer is for the opinion that ________. A. parks’ water systems should be improved B. the roles that parks can play should be reassessed C. new technology should be applied to upgrade park facilities D. strategies should be developed to cut parks’ operational costs 46. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. Parks: A Money Waster B. Parks: Just Green Spaces? C. Parks: More Needed in Poorer Areas D. Parks: An Indicator of Economic Growth? 【答案】43. A 44. D 45. B 46. 根据第一段中中“So England’s 27,000 parks are considered as financial liabilities rather than the amazing asset to our health and wellbeing that any of their 37 million regular users could prove.(因此,英格兰的27,000个公园被视为财务负担,而不是其3700万常规用户中任何一人都能证明的、对我们健康和福祉而言惊人的资产。)”可知,从传统会计的角度来看,公园被视为负担而非财富。故选A。 【44题详解】 推理判断题。根据第二段中中“Less money means less maintenance, more litter and uncivilized behavior and gradually much-loved local parks have been turned into dangerous eyesores. Tragically it’s the small, green spaces in poorer, built-up areas that suffer most from the disproportionate cuts to maintenance.(资金减少意味着维护减少,垃圾增多,不文明行为增多,渐渐地,深受喜爱的当地公园变成了危险的碍眼之物。不幸的是,在较贫穷的建成区,小型绿地因维护费用不成比例地削减而遭受的损失最大。)”可知,作者对资金不足的公园引发的一些社会问题感到不安。故选D。 【45题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段中“But it doesn’t have to be this way. Andrew Hinchley, green space development officer at the London Borough of Camden, said that if we had new ways of valuing the services parks provide for improving water quality, for example, then you could ask water companies to pay towards their upkeep.(但情况不一定要这样。伦敦卡姆登区的绿地发展官员Andrew Hinchley说,如果我们有新的方法来评估公园为改善水质等提供的服务价值,那么你就可以要求自来水公司为公园的维护支付费用。)”以及第四段中中“The local government is urged to publish strategic plans to recognize the real value of parks and to set out how they will be managed to maximize their contribution to wider local authority goals such as promoting healthier lifestyles.(敦促地方政府公布战略计划,以承认公园的真正价值,并制定如何管理公园的计划,以最大限度地发挥它们对更广泛的地方政府目标(如促进更健康的生活方式)的贡献。)”可知,作者认为应该重新评估公园可以发挥的作用。故选B。 【46题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中中“Our green spaces are shrinking and decaying despite the fact that they deliver a range of ecosystem services such as improving air and water quality, lowering the risk by absorbing water run-off, and cooling the urban environment as well as providing much-needed space for wildlife.(尽管我们的绿地提供了一系列生态系统服务,如改善空气和水质、通过吸收径流降低风险、冷却城市环境以及为野生动物提供急需的空间,但它们仍在缩小和衰退。)”以及最后一段中“The local government is urged to publish strategic plans to recognize the real value of parks and to set out how they will be managed to maximize their contribution to wider local authority goals such as promoting healthier lifestyles.(敦促地方政府公布战略计划,以承认公园的真正价值,并制定如何管理公园的计划,以最大限度地发挥它们对更广泛的地方政府目标(如促进更健康的生活方式)的贡献。)” B。 Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. Each sentence can only be used once. Note that there are two sentences more than you need. What specifically can you do to increase learning when faced with stress at work? Start internally. ___47___ When stress emerges, change the message you tell yourself from “this is a stressful work assignment/situation” to “this is a challenging but rewarding opportunity to learn.” Interpreting stressful tasks as learning possibilities shifts your mindset and better prepares you to approach the task with an orientation toward growth and longer-term gains. Work and learn with others. Instead of struggling with a stressful challenge solely in your own head, try to get input from others. Getting out and discussing a stressor with your peers and colleagues might reveal hidden insights, either from their experience or from the questions and perspectives they raise. ___48___ Alongside purely relaxing breaks — either short ones like meditating or longer ones like taking days off — consider recasting learning itself as a break from your routine tasks at work. This might seem like a mere mental rebranding, but if a learning activity allows you to divert from the type of effort you use in regular work activities (e.g., numeric thinking, interacting with clients), and if the activity also fits your real interests, it can refill you psychologically. ___49___ However, approaching it as a form of pause can make it more appealing and more likely to create positive, enjoyable experiences. Embracing learning can be a more active way to cushion yourself from negative effects of stress at work. ___50___ Even without pressing problems, engaging in learning as a central feature of your work life will help you build personal resources and equip you to be resilient and prepared in navigating future stress at work. A. Viewing learning as “more work” will make it less attractive in an already stressful situation. B. Simply practice “buckle down and power through” to focus on getting the stressful work done. C. Temporarily disconnect from work and get “work breaks” from the stressful environment. D. At the same time, there is no need to wait for stress to arise before seeking learning opportunities. E. Craft learning activities as a new form of “work break.” F. Practice reframing stressful work challenges in your mind. 【答案】47. F 48. E 49. A 50. Summary (10’) 61. Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible. Breaking up is hard to do but men’s hearts hurt most When it comes to break-ups, men suffer more emotional pain than women, a study has found. The first-of-its-kind analysis used online relationships to map the most common problems experienced by couples who told their stories outside the therapist’s office. A team of researchers at Lancaster University helped to produce the report. Charlotte Entwistle, the lead author, said: “Most of what we know comes from studies of people in couples therapy: a specific set of people. We wanted to understand not only what relationship problems are most commonly experienced by the public, but who experiences by the public, but who experiences which problems more.” To bridge the gap the team analysed the characteristics of more than 184,000 people who had posted their problems to an anonymous online forum, and they created a “map” of the most common issues. Communication was the most frequent, cited by nearly one in five people, while one in eight reported that trust was a struggle. The outcomes came as no surprise but the team was taken aback at the obvious gender differences. The theme that kept cropping up was the “heartache” felt, and the team recorded specific words such as “regret”, “break up”, “cry”, and “heart-broken”. Contrary to expectation, men talked about heartbreak significantly more than women. The findings suggest that the stereotype of men being less emotionally invested in relationships may be inaccurate. The researchers also found that men were more likely to seek online professional help. Dr Ryan Boyd, the lead researcher, said: “When you remove the traditional social stigmas against men for seeking help and sharing their emotions, they seem just as invested in working through rough patches in their relationships as women.” The researchers hope that an accurate picture of relationship problems could help couples avoid common setbacks. Boyd said: “This gives us serious hope that we can use help-seeking behavior to better understand all types of social and psychological issues.” The study was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: A research group studying relationship problems found that men emotionally suffer more in break-ups through analysis of an online forum. The exam was crucial for my future, but the debate team offered a chance to improve my skills and make friends. After days of thinking, I chose to balance both, though it meant sacrificing some leisure time. This choice taught me that growth comes from stepping out of comfort zones. What I feared most — failing the exam or disappointing the team — didn’t happen. Instead, I learned time management and perseverance, which are skills that will benefit me forever. The experience also showed me that life is full of crossroads, and the courage to choose wisely matters more than avoiding risks. The exam was crucial for my future, but the debate team offered a chance to improve my skills and make friends. 拓展句:The exam was crucial for my future while the debate team offered a chance which could improve my skills and make friends. 【点睛】【高分句型1】Last year, I faced a difficult decision: whether to focus on preparing for the college entrance exam or join the school’s debate team, which I had dreamed of since middle school. He says one submerged village, called Tel Hreiz, sits 5 to 10 feet below the surface of the water. The community was ___12___ some 7,000 years ago. There, the archaeologists have found pottery and flint, human skeletons, the remains of deer, cows, pigs and dogs, and hundreds of olive pits — probably the remains of olive oil ___13___. And the researchers say that it would have taken ___16___ people — or strong beasts of burden — to move them into place, suggesting that constructing the wall was a well-organized community effort. A study of more than 7000 people who were middle-aged and otherwise ____21____ has found those in high-stress offices were more likely to need two weeks or more off work a year and experience ____22____ like chest pain and shortness of breath. Study author Sam Harvey said it wasn’t just overwork that seemed to be making people feel sick, but how much control they had over their ____23____. “At a ____24____ level, it’s about how much control you have over the every day, minute by minute in your job — but at a broader level it’s about how much control you have in an organization and your ability to ____25____ problems and come up with solutions,” he said. The study, published in the journal Plos One, found one in every 15 cases of long-term sick leave, defined as lasting more than two weeks, could be ____26____ if workplaces became less stressful. But Dr Harvey, a psychiatrist and researcher at the Black Dog Institute and the University of NSW, said the ____27____ was not just as simple as people being worked so hard they had a heart attack or developed depression. “I think there’s good evidence that ____28____ of high-demand and low control can cause health problems like cardiovascular disease and depression and anxiety, but it’s also much harder for people to return to work when they have developed health problems,” he said. “Very often it’s a(n) ____29____ of problems that have reached a point where they can no longer work, and very often what’s written on the sick note doesn’t ____30____ that.” He said the Black Dog Institute was developing programs to bring in to workplaces to help lower stress levels, while many workplaces were looking at ways to improve control among ____31____. “From an organizational point of view, that’s something that’s ____32____ more easily modified or improved than thinking about the level of demands placed on people,” he said. Simple changes included giving people more ____33____ over rostering (排班), and creating systems for people to fix workplace problems. “____34____, being at work is good for people’s mental health… what we are trying to push towards is how to make workplaces more mental health enhancing,” he said. The study used people living in Norway, where a unique ID system for every worker enabled the team to know exactly how much ____35____ participants took in the year after they were interviewed about their health and work environment. 21. 39. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage? A. A Shopping Trip B. The Charm of the Market C. A Busy City D. The Art of the Deal (B) Which Way Home, a documentary by Rebecca Cammisa, charts the journeys to Mexican and Central American children who leave their home countries to come to the United States riding on top of a train they call “La Bestia” (the beast). All of the children dream of a better life for themselves and their families. Some of them hope to reunite with family members in the U. S. Others have dreams of going to school or getting a job so they can send money back home. Kevin Fourteen-year-old Kevin is from Honduras. A seemingly happy-go-lucky guy, Kevin is the group’s ring leader, telling jokes, making leaps across car roofs, and providing some comic relief in the film. Kevin has a strong sense of duty to his family. His mother, Lupe, tells him to buy a house for them in the U. S., so she can escape Kevin’s violent stepfather. He plans to head to Manhattan once he crosses the border, but during the filming he is taken off of the train by American border agents who send him back to Honduras. Without hesitation, Kevin leaves Honduras again and jumps on the train. Throughout his journey, Kevin encounters violence and brutality that should never be a part of childhood. Juan Carlos Juan Carlos is a 13-year-old from Guatemala. When we meet him, we learn that his father abandoned the family years ago and moved to America for a better life, leaving Juan Carlos’s mother, Esmeralda, to care for several children on her own. His younger brother, Francisco, made it into the U. S. a month earlier and now lives with their grandmother in Los Angeles. Juan Carlos feels responsible for providing for his mother and his other family members and decides he must do something to help support them. With the weight of the world on his shoulders, he writes a letter telling Esmeralda that he, too, is leaving for the U. S. Olga Olga is the only female migrant featured in the film. She is nine years old and travelling with her friend, Freddy, who is also nine. They are being taken to the U. S. illegally. Both are headed for Minnesota, where Olga hopes to reunite with her mother, and Freddy hopes to find his father. During the making of the documentary, the film crew loses track of Olga and Freddy, and we never find out what becomes of them. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Feature-Length Documentary. Director Rebecca Camissa said her goal for the film was to create public awareness of child migration, and to “promote a dialogue that leads to creating humane immigration policy reform in the United States 40. It won an Academy Award for its theme that corresponds to the reality. C. It aims to make viewers conscious of the phenomenon of child migration. D. Its director has managed to create humane immigration policy reform 41. While the documentary was being made, the crew lost touch with ________. A. Kevin and Juan Carlos B. Juan Carlos and Olga C. Juan Carlos and Freddy D. Olga and Freedy 42. What can be learned from the passage about Kevin and Juan Carlos? A. Both of them felt responsible for their families B. Neither of them managed to get to the United States C. Neither of them had any relative in the United States D. Both of them were found on the way to their destinations (C) Traditional accountancy methods focus on a park’s saleable value, or its operational costs associated with maintenance. Section C Directions: Complete the following passage by using the sentences in the box. 第二卷 Ⅳ. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ *Ⅵ.
