Read part 1 and choose the best answer.
What kind of system is BDS?
A. A global navigation satellite system
B. A local communication system
C. An international weather system
What other global navigation systems do you know about?
GPS — The United States
GLONASS — Russia
Galileo — The European Union (EU)
Read part 2 and answer the questions.
1. What does each satellite of BDS send to the Earth?
2. What two important questions do the signals from the satellites answer?
3. At what speed do the radio signals travel?
4. What does a phone do after it receives the signal?
5. How many satellites does a phone need to calculate its location?

Read part 3 and answer the question.
How do you understand the “two-way communication”?
“Two-way communication” means BDS is not just for sending information to us. We can also send short messages and our position for help through its satellites, even in places where there is no mobile phone signal.
Choose the best answer.
Which of the following is an example of BDS two-way communication?
A. A ship uses BDS to know its position at sea.
B. A lost hiker sends a text message for help and receives a reply through BDS satellites.
C. A driver uses BDS to get traffic information on his/her phone.
D. A phone receives a weather report from a radio station.
Read parts 4-5 and decide whether the statements are true (T) or false (F).
1. If your phone supports BDS, it will choose the best navigation system signal automatically. ( )
2. We can't use BDS outside China. ( )
3. BDS is more accurate in China and the Asia-Pacific region.
( )
4. Phones that support BDS can only use BDS for navigation.

BDS, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, is a global navigation system made up of satellites orbiting Earth. Each satellite sends radio signals with its position and the time the signal was sent. These signals travel at the speed of light.
On Earth, your phone receives these signals and calculates its distance from each satellite. To find your exact location, it needs information from at least four satellites. This helps you not get lost.
BDS is special because it also allows two-way communication, so you can send text messages even without a mobile network. If your phone supports BDS, it will automatically use the best available signal. You can use BDS worldwide, though it is more accurate in China and the Asia-Pacific region.
