Traditional Chinese paper-cutting used to be put on windows during weddings and festivals. Today, it is used in modern design and shown in art exhibitions around the world. A young artist named Chen Fenwan is leading this change.
Chen calls herself “an artist made of paper.” She sees paper not only as a material, but also as a way to think. In traditional paper-cutting, the shape that is left becomes the artwork. But Chen looks at the empty parts instead. She asks whether the empty space can also become the main part of the art.
Her show, called Paper Cutting, was shown on a famous street in Paris during the 2024 Summer Olympics. It imagines a world made of paper. With shapes that look like trees and buildings, Chen shows a society built on calmness and balance.
Chen says her way of creating follows the idea of “taking away.” It shows an Eastern way of thinking about living with both solid and empty space.
Colour is also important in her art. Her different pink colours show courage and the wish to break free from old rules. For Chen, the true life of paper-cutting is in its spirit and ideas, not just in how it looks. She hopes her art can catch people’s eyes and also make them think about the stories and real life behind it.

More than ten years after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared on March 8, 2014, the question “Where is the plane?” is still not answered. The Malaysian government has said that a new search will start again.
The new search will be done by an American company called Ocean Infinity. For 55 days, the company will look through 15,000 square kilometers of the southern Indian Ocean—the place people believe is most likely to have clues (线索). With a “no find, no fee (报酬)” plan, the company will get money only if it finds the plane.
This plan was allowed in December 2024 after Malaysia agreed that Ocean Infinity’s ideas were believable. The search had started earlier that year but had to stop because of winter weather. Now that summer is coming to the southern part of the world, the search will start again soon.
Flight MH370 took off from Kuala Lumpur and was flying to Beijing. About 40 minutes after take off, it made its last call before entering Vietnamese airspace. After that, the plane’s communication and tracking systems (定位系统) were turned off on purpose, and the plane flew away from its path for over six hours, according to former Prime Minister Najib Razak.
Two big searches were done before, but neither found the plane. Only three true pieces of the plane—parts of its wings—were found on the coast of Africa and nearby islands. Experts still cannot tell what happened, so finding the rest of the plane is very important to know the truth.
47. What do we know about Ocean Infinity’s search for MH370?
A. It is the first-ever search for MH370.
B. It won’t get paid if it doesn’t find anything.
C. It has clear information about the plane.
D. It will cover the whole sea floor of the Indian Ocean.
48. Why did Ocean Infinity’s search stop earlier this year?
A. Because the company wasn’t prepared yet.
B. Because the government found it to be wrong.
C. Because bad weather influenced the search.
D. Because the company had to raise money itself.
49. What are Paragraphs 4-5 mainly about?
A. What happened during MH370’s flight. B. Why MH370 is important.
C. How the search will be carried out. D. Why it’s hard to find a missing plane.

At Beijing New Oriental Foreign Language School in Yangzhou, Jiangsu, students can read and study comics in a special comic (漫画) class, unlike most schools where comics are not allowed in class. The teacher, Hu Xinlei, who has taught comics for 20 years, believes comics are more than entertainment. She says they express meaningful and deep ideas.
In the class, students read famous Chinese and foreign comics like Father and Son and Winter of Three Hairs. They not only read but also analyze (分析) the structure, style, and hidden meanings in the stories. Students learn drawing skills, character design, and storytelling. One interesting method is allusion, where they take ideas from classic stories to create new work. For example,16-year-old Hu Shiyuan retold Sima Guang and the Water Jar to creatively criticize (批判) selfish behavior in modern life.
For students, the comic class is more than just art practice. As 15-year-old He Liyan said, comics have become a way to express ideas and share personal thoughts, inspiring (激励) them to create more meaningful stories in the future.
Now the school is thinking about adding something new to the comic program, and many students are looking forward to it...
50. Why do students learn more than drawing in the comic class?
A. To understand ideas in stories. B. To read only foreign comics.
C. To prepare for math tests. D. To learn about school history.

A. Taking ideas from old stories. B. Changing pictures into words.

It was a long night as our dog, Precious, had her babies. After six hours, five healthy puppies (小狗) were born. Just when we thought it was finished, a sixth puppy came—very small, weak, and born with a cleft lip (唇腭裂).
The vet (兽医) said fixing it would be expensive and the little puppy might not live. We couldn’t pay for the operation, but I still wanted to help it. Every two hours, I fed it with a small tube (管子). Slowly, it became stronger and learned to eat by itself.
Five weeks later, all the puppies had new homes except the one with the cleft lip. One day, our neighbour came with her grandson to ask about a puppy. I told her they were all gone—just then, the small puppy made a sound.
The boy, who also had a cleft lip, ran to the puppy and said it was “my puppy.” He held it and told his grandmother, “Look, Grandma! All the other puppies have homes except this cute one—and he looks just like me.”

B. It won’t get paid if it doesn’t find anything.

D. It will cover the whole sea floor of the Indian Ocean.
48. Why did Ocean Infinity’s search stop earlier this year?

B. Because the government found it to be wrong.
C. Because bad weather influenced the search.
D. Because the company had to raise money itself.
49. What are Paragraphs 4-5 mainly about?

In the class, students read famous Chinese and foreign comics like Father and Son and Winter of Three Hairs. 阅读下面短文,并用英语回答问题(请注意每小题的词数要求)。

【答案】One possible version:
Hello! I’d like to share my idea of a dream library for our school.
In my mind, the dream library would be bright and comfortable, with a special English reading corner and a small area for group discussions. There could also be a “creative wall” where students share book reviews or reading notes. Students could read, relax, or work on projects together there. A warm reading space like this would help us develop good habits, improve our English, and learn from each other.
I’m sure such a library would inspire more students to love reading and make our school a truly book-loving place. I hope the English club can consider my idea.
