Dear Mike,
How are you? I am not happy these days. My parents are angry with me because they think I live an unhealthy life at weekends.
At weekends, I always get up late. So I usually don’t have breakfast. I play basketball for an hour then. For lunch, I often eat out. Hamburgers and ice cream are my favourites. I usually go to bed at eleven thirty.
But my sister Jenny is different. She never gets up late at weekends. After getting up, she brushes her teeth and does morning exercises. After that, she has a healthy breakfast. She always does her homework in the morning. For lunch, she eats rice, meat, fruit and vegetables. In the afternoon, she usually helps with the housework. In the evening, she usually goes out to take a walk. She takes a shower before going to bed. “I have a great day!” Jenny always says.

Most recently, the artist “created” a piece of bronze ware (青铜器) on cloth. What gave him the idea to create this work? “Many bronzes can only be seen in museums. A work of embroidery, however, can be hung in one’s home or office. People can see it at any time,” said Fu.

How much pocket money do you get from your parents every month? What do you often do with your money?
We ask three middle school students for their ideas on pocket money.
Ruth:

The two things I usually like to buy with my pocket money are books and toys. I don’t really think about getting more pocket money. And I even don’t talk about pocket money with my friends at school. Jimmy:
My mom gives me 100 yuan a week. She says I can spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she can make me lunch, then I can spend the money buying what I want.
I like a pair of sports shoes very much. If they cost 500 yuan and I only have 400 yuan, my mom may give me an extra (额外的) 100 yuan. But I have to do some chores.

At the same time, her friends were in the playground playing baseball—a sport that Betty hated. Of all the musical instruments that the teacher had in the music room, the drums were the most interesting to Betty. She thought it was cool that there were so many different shapes and sizes of drums, and she wanted to hit them to see what they sounded like.

She could feel hundreds of pairs of eyes looking at her, and that made her feel frightened. So, does Betty enjoy being famous now? “________.” she says. “All I want is to show others what I love. Ink brushes (毛笔) play an important part in Chinese culture. They are widely used in Chinese paintings and writings.
Xu Wenyi is from Wenzhou. He runs an ink brush shop with his two brothers. Xu’s grandfather set up the shop in 1900. Xu’s father learned how to make the ink brush at 13, and ran the shop when he was ready. Xu also began to learn the skill at the same age. Xu and his brothers are the third generation to run the family shop.
There are about 40 steps to make an ink brush. The first step is to choose the hair. Every winter, when animal hair is the best, Xu Wenyi goes to other cities to collect the hair. Next, Xu and his workers make the hair tidy. It may take days, even a week, to get a small strand (缕) of brush hair. After that, they cut the hair in different sizes. When the hair is finally ready, they think about other parts of an ink brush. These days, the brothers try many new things. They make lanugo (胎毛) writing brushes and many new parents enjoy these brushes because the brushes keep babies’ hair. The brothers also show how to make brushes in their shop. They sometimes bring their brushes to different cultural festivals. Many culture lovers show great interest in the skill itself.
“We’re happy to make good brushes for people,” said Xu. “We want to pass on the skills if people are still writing with ink brushes. And we believe we can make better brushes by improving the skill.”

I know they are not good for me, but they taste great. After lunch, I usually hang out with my friends. Sometimes, I sleep all the afternoon. In the evening, I either watch TV or play computer games. She always does her homework in the morning. For lunch, she eats rice, meat, fruit and vegetables. In the afternoon, she usually helps with the housework. In the evening, she usually goes out to take a walk. She takes a shower before going to bed. “I have a great day!” Jenny always says.

Jimmy:
My mom gives me 100 yuan a week. She says I can spend it in the school canteen (餐厅) or she can make me lunch, then I can spend the money buying what I want.

Now Betty is fourteen and gives concerts around the country. She also has her own video channel and gets over a million hits a year. What’s amazing is that Betty hasn’t ever been to a drum lesson. “You can learn anything on the internet, so I’ve never felt it was important for me to take classes,” explains Betty.

Passage 19
