check on the unexpected visitor, D'Amico found the
sea lion unmoved(几个小时后, D'Amico回来查看这

suitable place for mammals(哺乳类) , since it's ex-
posed to severe conditions and lacks a permanent

岛是由鸟类统治的。)”可知,第三段主要告诉我们这
个岛的相关情况,如不适合哺乳动物居住,有一块露

A
On a cold and gray morning, National Park Service biologist Lidia
D'Amico grabbed her binoculars(双筒望远镜) and radio and began
walking around the island's roads as usual.
On atypical day, she would spend her walk time watching birds. On this day, however,
she spotted something strange:a“bigfigure”perchingona rockon the island'snorthwest side.
A closer look revealed the uknown object to be a baby sea lion, which was a rare sighting on the
rock, and rarer because the creature was so far out of the water.“This sea lion had dragged it-
self all the way up the rocks and wasnt moving, which I knew was unusual, ”D'Amico
ex
plained.
The island is not a suitable place for mammals(哺乳类) , since it's exposed to severe condi
tions and lacks a permanent sour ee of water. A small rock around 100 yards off the north side of
the island, called “Little Alcatraz”, is used by 7 to 8 seals during low tide(潮水) . But the island
is ruled by birds.
Upon returning a few hours later to check on the unexpected visitor, D'Amico found the se a
lion unmoved, so she made a call to the Marine Mammal Center. Even with the help of fellow
park workers, it took great effort to load the 40-pound baby into a box and then they transferred
him to the Marine Mammal Center. Once safely ashore, the baby was picked up by the staff
from the Marine Mammal Center, who transported him to their animal hospital in the Head
lands.
For the first month after his rescue, the little baby's condition was“guarded”, and he was
slow to recover. However, with treatment and feedings provided by the staff, he began to gain
weight. After two months of treatment, a fat and healthy sea lion could walk slowly. The once
ill fed baby had been cleared to return to the wild. Recovered, he went into the waters of his
new life with a new name:Alcatraz, the sea lion.

For millions of years, bees, moths and other pollinators have used scents(香气) to locate

day. When the scents of flowers interact with certain air pollutants(污染物) at night, key s cents
are destroyed. Moths and other nighttime pollinators may find it hard to recognize the flowers
they were seeking, researchers show.
The Seattle team conducted field and lab tests with a plant-the pale evening primrose.
Ecologist Jeremy Chan put bags over pale evening primroses to trap the flowers' scent. The he
took the scent back to the lab, along with some moths. They released the primrose scent and
moths into a wind tunnel that could mimic conditions in an outdoor field. At once, they watched
the moths easily flying straight upwind and tracking the scent. But it was different when pollu
tants, like ozone and nitrogen dioxide, were added to the mix. Now, the moths flew in a“Z”
line. They seemed to be seeking the scent — often without success.
The team then decided to test its findings in nature at night. The result was the same.
When this scent was mixed with the pollutants, moths'visits dropped. Some moths even never
found a single flower during the tests. Besides, the same reactions could hurt flowers'scents by
day. But because sunlight can break down ozone, the problem is likely more serious for night
pollinators.
As Earth's climate warms, it's likely that a mix of pollutants will continue to climb. Such
conditions could worsen the pollution threat to flowers scents and plant pollination.“As we
know, pollination is important to food growers”, noted Joel Thornton. He'san atmospheric sci-
ent ist in the team. He said pollution could pose a new type of threat to farming.
5.Why do moths have trouble finding out flowers today?
A.Flowers'scents interrupt moth.
B.Pollutants affect flowers'scents.
C.Flowers are not available at night.
D.Flowers are changing their scents.
6.How did the researchers get the findings?
A.By monitoring moths'behaviors.
B.By detecting the primrose scent.
C.By analyzing the types of pollutants.
D.By comparing scents with pollutants.
7.What did Joel Thornton think of the findings?
A.Amusing.
B.Promising.
C.Satisfying.
D.Worrying.
8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Pollinators:Lost in Pollutants
B.Scents:Gone with the Wind
C.Pollinators:Master of a Garden
D.Scents:Nature'sSecret Language

An international team of researchers led by the University of Bristol has cast light on
Earth's earliest ecosystem, showing that within a few hundred million years of planetary form a
tion, life on Earth was already booming(繁荣的) . Everything alive today originates from a com-

CA(Last Universal Common Ancestor
74
LU
$$C _ { 1 }$$
A is the assump tive common ancestor from which all modern cellular life, from single
celled organisms like bacteria to the huge redwood trees as well as us humans originates. LU
CA
stands for the source of the tree of life before it splits into the groups recognized today:Bacteria,
Archaea and Eukarya.
The team compared all the genes(基因) in the genomes of living species, counting the varia
tions that have occurred within their orders over time since they shared an ancestor in I
UCA.
The time of separation of some species is known from the fossil(化石) record and so the team
used a genetic equivalent of the familiar equation used to calculate speed in physics to work out
when LUCA existed, arriving at the answer of 4.2 billion years a
go
, about four hundred million
years after the formation of Earth and our solar system.
Next, the team worked out the biology of LUCA by modelling the physiological character is
tics of living species back through the genealogy(宗谱) of life to LUCA.Lead author, Dr Ed
mund Moody explained, “The evolutionary history of genesis complicated by their exchange be
tween lineages(细胞系) . We have to use complex evolutionary models to harmonize the evolu
tionary history of genes with the genealogy of species.”
Co-author Professor Philip Donoghue said, “Our work reveals insights into early Earth and
life that could not be achieved by anyone subject alone. It also demonstrates just how quickly an
ecosystem was established on early Earth. This suggests that life may be booming on Earth-like
biosphere s elsewhere in the universe.”
9.What can be learned about L
UC
A from the text?
A.It represents the root of the tree of life.
B.It is only the ancestor of redwood trees.
C.It was divided into two groups.
D.It didn't change much over time.
10.When did LUCA exist according to the text?
A.About 4.6 billion years ago.
B.About 3.8 billion years a

C.About 4.2 billion years ago.
D.About 400 million years ag
11.What can we conclude from the text?
A.LUCA was the only form of life on Earth then.
B.
LU
CA was probably a very complex organism.
C.The study of L

A is the final step in exploring the universe.
D.The formation of Earth was closely related to that of other planets.
