In this story, the writer doesn’t tell us who Charlie is. But with the picture and the context clues, we can figure out that Charlie is a guide dog. Charlie wasn’t welcome to stay because the receptionist thought Charlie was a pet dog. Activity 6 Read para.3 and answer the questions. It was late. John was very tired after a long day. He went to bed and soon fell asleep. Charlie was sleeping beside the bed. Suddenly, Charlie started barking. John woke up and smelt smoke. A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. John knew they couldn’t get out that way now. Their room was on the 8th floor, so they couldn’t climb out of the window. They had to do something to stop the smoke. With Charlie's help, John put some wet clothes along the bottom of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited. The minutes seemed like hours. Then he heard it.
