P52 Look at the pictures below and discuss how animals help us. Sheep are also useful animals. They provide wool so we can make warm clothes. Some dogs can become guide dogs. They lead the way for blind people. 1. What’s the blind man doing? 2. What do you think the word "eyes" means in the story? Here is a story of a blind man and his “eyes”. Look at the pictures and the title of the article. Then answer the questions below. Before you read He is checking into a hotel. It means the blind man's dog. Why did he call the dog his “eyes”? Let's read the story to find out. A blind man and his "eyes" John Dancer always travelled together with Charlie. One night at a hotel, Charlie saved his life. "Good evening, sir," said the receptionist when John arrived at the hotel. Then he saw Charlie. "Sir, you're welcome to stay, but we don't allow pets here. Sorry!" he explained. "Charlie isn't a pet," said John. "He's my eyes. I'm blind, and it's hard for me to get around by myself. I need him to show me where to go." The receptionist apologized and led John and Charlie to their room. It was late. John was very tired after a long day. He went to bed and soon fell asleep. Charlie was sleeping beside the bed. Suddenly, Charlie started barking. John woke up and smelt smoke. Listen and read. v. (狗)吠叫 A fire! Smoke started to come in from under the door. John knew they couldn't get out that way now. Their room was on the 8th floor, so they couldn't climb out of the window. They had to do something to stop the smoke. With Charlie's help, John put some wet clothes along the bottom of the door. Then he got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited. The minutes seemed like hours. Then he heard it—the sound of a fire engine. It was music to his ears. Before long, a fireman arrived and got in the room from the window. When he found John, he quickly helped him get up and tried to get him out of the building. But John would not go without his "eyes". Finally, the fireman got both John and Charlie out of the building safely. Read the story and answer the questions. Task 1 1. When and where did the story take place? (P54) 2. Who are the two main characters in the story? John Dancer and Charlie the dog. It took place late at night in a hotel. Read again and divide the story into three parts. Task 2 Beginning Development Ending 1. What was John's trouble at the reception? 2. How did John solve the trouble? Read the beginning of the story and answer the questions. The receptionist didn’t allow Charlie to stay at the hotel. John told the receptionist Charlie was his guide dog and he needed him. What happened after they entered the room? Reading strategy Making inferences(推断的结果;结论) from context clues Good readers use context clues and their background knowledge to find out what the writer doesn't directly mention in the text. In this story, the writer doesn't tell us who Charlie is. But with the picture and the context clues (e.g. Charlie isn't a pet ... and He's my eyes.), we can figure out that Charlie is a guide dog. What happened then? John was very tired. Charlie started barking. Smoke started to come in from under the door. John got down on the floor next to Charlie and waited. Read the development of the story and complete the table. →He soon fell asleep. →John woke up and smelt smoke. →With Charlie's help, John put some wet towels along the bottom of the door. →He heard the sound of a fire engine and they were saved. Answer the questions about the development of the story. P54 2 (1) Why did Charlie start barking suddenly? (2) How did John stop the smoke coming into the room? (3) What does the writer mean by "It was music to his ears"? He put some wet clothes along the bottom of the door. Because Charlie smelt the smoke and wanted to wake John up. It means that John was very happy / pleased to hear the sound of the fire engine. Read the ending of the story and answer the question. 1.
