Passage 1
It’s now been 6 years since I sold everything and left the United States to travel around the world. 1
Meet local people.
Make it a point to avoid other travelers from time to time and start conversations with local people. Basic English is spoken widely all over the world. 2 And learn from those who live in the country you’re visiting. People enrich your travels more than sights do.
Take lots of photos.
You may only see these places and meet these people once in your lifetime. 3 Don’t worry about looking like a “tourist”. Are you traveling to look cool? No one cares. Great photos are the meaningful souvenirs.
Keep an open mind.
4 Listen to opinions you don’t agree with. It’s arrogant (傲慢的) to assume your views are correct and other people’s are wrong. Try to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and embrace different possibilities, opportunities, people, suggestions and interests. Ask questions. You don’t have to agree, but you may be surprised at what you’ll learn.
5
I know it’s a cliché (陈词滥调), but you should still attempt it. Seek out interesting and unusual places where you don’t see many tourists. Many memorable travel experiences have happened to me in areas that are not easy to visit.
A.Get off the beaten path.
B.Break out of your comfort zone.
C.Remember them forever with plenty of pictures.
D.Wake up early and it is a magical time for photos.
E.So it’s easier to communicate than you might think.
F.These are the best travel tips I’ve discovered along the way.
G.Don’t judge the lifestyles of others if they are different from your own.
Passage 2
Even if your budget is tight and your pockets are light, there are ways to experience everything Dublin has to offer. You may have to miss high-end restaurants and beautiful castles. 6 . Here are some of our top tips for visiting Dublin on a budget.
Consider spring or late summer instead of peak season
The shoulder season, from late August to October, can also be the best time to visit Dublin. September when the schools restart after the summer break, usually offers the best value for tourists. Peak times to visit the city include St. Patrick’s Day in mid-March and the lead-up to Christmas in December. 7 .
Pick where you stay to save
Dublin is known for being an expensive capital to stay in, but the city has a huge number of hotels, many of which have popped up in the last decade. 8 However, being based in the heart of the city will allow you to save on public transport as you can walk everywhere.
See the whole city by public transport
9 . You’ll have to factor in overnight parking rates and longer journey times in the often-busy traffic. To save, walk or use public transport instead. The city center is flat and walkable, or you can hop on a shared bike to explore around.
10 .
Many of the city’s top museums are ticketed but Dublin has plenty of museum s offering free admission, including the National Museum of Ireland, which celebrates the country’s history of decorative arts, natural history and archaeology. Even better, some museums offer free guided tours, led by expert staff — perfect for enhancing your visit.
A.Enjoy modern art for nothing.
B.Hotels in central district carry higher costs.
C.Plan ahead to get free entry and conducted tours.
D.Taxis and car rentals can be expensive in Dublin.
E.However, you won’t miss out on cultural treasures and sociable hostels.
F.Come either before or after these holidays to help your euros go further.
G.Sometimes the best way to see a city is to get out into nature and look back.
Passage 3
Not all great travelers are great planners. If you want to have a memorable journey, it’s important to prepare well and have a flexible mindset. 11 . No one wants to spend their vacation dealing with avoidable issues.
I always keep a travel guidebook and a map close-by when I’m planning a trip. I don’t rely solely on my phone’s navigation (导航). 12 . These days, there are numerous travel apps, but I’m old-fashioned enough to enjoy the feel of a real book and a tangible map. I use “Lonely Planet” guidebooks and detailed regional maps. 13 It should offer in depth information about destinations, local customs, and must-visit attractions. It will also usually include practical tips like transportation options.
In addition, I have a collection of old travel diaries from my previous trips, picked up over the years. Of course, they are personal records, not professional guides. 14 . However, if I need inspiration or want to recall past experiences to plan a new trip, there’s nothing better.
For centuries, travel blogs have been a source of inspiration for adventurers. “Traveling is not just about moving from one place to another; it’s about the experiences and growth,” wrote a famous traveler, emphasizing the soul of travel. 15 . A few hours spent going through a travel guidebook or an old travel diary can be an inspiring experience.
A.I don’t often refer to these diaries in the initial planning stage.
B.It doesn’t consider the real-time changes like traffic jams or sudden closures.
C.But I still don’t want to give up my traditional way of trip-planning.
D.But reading a travel-related book can be a source of excitement and expectation.
E.Of course, a travel guidebook is not only for finding places to visit.
F.That means thorough research, correct bookings, and no major oversights.
G.Travel guidebooks don’t always provide the most up-to-date information.
Passage 4
In recent years, a new travel trend has quietly arisen among busy students and young professionals: micro-travel. 16 This trend reflects a growing desire to balance modern life’s demands with meaningful experiences — all without breaking the bank or exhausting limited vacation days.
Several factors drive this trend. First, the fast-paced modern lifestyle leaves little time for long trips. Weekends become precious windows for relaxation. Second, micro-travel is budget-friendly. 17 Third, environmental awareness plays a role. Shorter distances mean lower carbon footprints, supporting eco-conscious values.
Technology also fuels the trend. Social media platforms like Xiaohongshu and Instagram are filled with micro-travel guides, showcasing picturesque spots and cultural activities nearby. 18 One high school student from Beijing shared online: “I used to think travel required grand plans, but last weekend, I visited a rooftop calligraphy exhibition in my city. It felt like a mini-vacation!”
What makes micro-travel special is its focus on cultural discovery. Many travelers use weekends to participate in local traditions. In Japan, for instance, young city dwellers might visit rural areas to join tea ceremonies or pottery workshops. In Italy, families often explore nearby villages during harvest festivals to taste regional dishes and learn ancient farming techniques. 19
20 Small towns and cultural sites gain visibility and economic support, which helps preserve heritage. For example, the revival of traditional dyeing workshops in Guizhou, China, owes much to weekend visitors interested in hands-on craft experiences. Meanwhile, travelers return home with fresh perspectives. A weekend spent exploring a local history museum might inspire a student’s essay or spark curiosity about global civilization.
A.The rise of micro-travel benefits both travelers and communities.
B.Most importantly, micro-travel offers a unique way to recharge mentally.
C.It could be a historic town, an art village, a local festival, or even a lesser-known museum.
D.Apps like TripAdvisor or local tourism websites make it easy to plan a 48-hour adventure.
E.With rising travel costs, short trips reduce expenses on transportation and accommodation.
F.These experiences create lasting memories and foster a deeper understanding of diverse cultures.
G.Unlike traditional vacations, micro-travel focuses on short, immersive weekend trips to nearby cultural destinations.
Passage 5
While travelling alone can be an enlightening experience, it can be incredibly overwhelming to leave home and head into the big wide world with just you and your backpack. 21
But what kind of person should we anticipate?
A person with opposite characteristics may increase the enjoyment of your trip’s duration. My best friend and I are far too alike. We love the same food, music and both love to travel.
22 We both hate making decisions and are poor with money. This is a recipe for disaster. My travel partner, on the other hand, is the total opposite of me. He loves to plan and budgets are his best friend. This is why we make such a great travel team.
23 You will make memories and share experiences that will last a lifetime. However, travelling the world together won’t be sun-kissed days and picture-perfect moments all the time. There will be flight delays, homesickness…even actual sickness. To resolve them quickly and fairly, you two need to be on the same wavelength. Put more simply, it’s important to find a travel buddy who communicates openly.
Although I’ve enjoyed traveling with my partner for over a decade, I can admit that friendship fatigue (疲劳) is real. You will long for some alone time eventually as it is tiring spending 24/7 with another human, regardless of how much you love and respect him/ her. 24 Make sure you find a travel buddy who understands this.
With a travel companion, not only will you save money but it is beneficial to share travel stories and have a familiar face as you travel into the unknown. 25 A travel buddy and personal photographer all in one!
A.Love and respect go a long way.
B.We are terrible travel companions, nevertheless.
C.Also, who else will take those natural photos for you?
D.A travel companion might make a world of difference.
E.A significant key to travelling together is communication.
F.That’s why we need to give it a second thought before travelling.
G.Alone time is healthy and very much critical for your mental well-being.

Passage 1
The fight-or-flight response is present in every one of us. First described by American physiologist (生理学家) Walter B.Cannon, the term means a group of physiological changes in response to possible fear, stress, danger, or pain. 1
It makes sense that we react (反应) to dangers by either fighting or running away. Think about early humans who lived outdoors. 2 The fight-or-flight response was their great way of dealing with different types of dangers. If a man were to be attacked by a lion, his breathing and heartbeat would increase under the influence of the response. Then his legs and arms would have more oxygen, allowing a quick fight or escape.
Many of the dangers people meet nowadays are not physical. Plenty of things that cause worry or stress do not require running away or fighting. 3 This leads to unwelcome results. For example, your heartbeat and breathing increase due to nervousness when you are giving a speech in front of many people. And your body is ready to fight or run. But this is not really proper in the situation.
4 Besides accepting the normal response, one way is to take slow, deep breaths in the face of challenging situations. Research shows this calms the heightened fight-or-flight response. Another method is to do light exercise to reduce your stress and anxiety.
The fight-or-flight response keeps us safe from possible dangers. Despite the clear benefits of having such a response, many people have trouble with an overactive fight-or-flight response. 5 By understanding why we have this response and how to manage it, we can move towards improving our overall well-being.
A.So ancient people preferred to live in groups.
B.It makes us more aware of what is around us.
C.As a result, they may suffer mentally or physically.
D.In other words, it’s our body’s natural stress reaction.
E.However, our body still responds to them in this way.
F.They were much more likely to face risks from nature.
G.Luckily, we can take helpful steps to lessen the effect.
Passage 2
Does your cat or dog suddenly get a burst of energy and perform athletic features around the house? Welcome to the world of zoomies — tense periods of high-energy activity including running, jumping and rolling.
You might see post-bath zoomies, midnight zoomies and out-of-nowhere zoomies. We don’t yet know if zoomies are more likely to occur at certain times of the day, or more in some than others. 6 If the zoomies are occurring as part of your animal’s daily routine, this implies your animal is enjoying themselves. Actually, zoomies have a lot in common with play. 7
Zoomies are mentioned a lot, but there is little scientific research why they occur. Yet some conclusions can be drawn from experience. 8 In dogs, this is commonly a play bow-where the dog appears to “bow” to another to signal it is eager to play. In cats, an invitation may include repeatedly rolling over. If this is the case, your animal is likely experiencing excitement and a desire to interact with you.
9 You should consult with your vet (兽医) if your dog or cat is displaying the behavior (in particular, circling) for too long. It might be a sign of a repetitive behavior disorder. If you struggle to distract or stop the behavior, or if it is resulting in injuries, seek professional assistance.
Even if you don’t get the call of the zoomies yourself, take a moment to enjoy and even join your dog or cat in having fun. 10
A.Sometimes we all need to run wild.
B.You can easily tell they bring a whole load of fun.
C.It is our duty to figure out what they want exactly.
D.Nothing is more annoying than a midnight zoomie.
E.However, we do consider them evidence of a pretty good mood.
F.For example, zoomies can be seen as an invitation for others to join.
G.Sometimes, however, zoomies may be a sign of a medical condition.
Passage 3
If people prefer warm or cold weather all year long, where should they go? Or if they liked cold weather, where would they go? The answer to this question depends upon the angle at which sunlight hits the Earth. 11
The angle at which sunlight strikes the earth’s surface is called the angle of insolation (日射). It means the amount of the sun’s energy that reaches the earth at a given place and time. The angle of insolation is always smaller near the North and South Poles, which results in colder temperatures there. 12
What affects insolation? In the morning the sun is close to the horizon and at midday it is at its highest in the sky. 13 Measuring the angle of insolation is difficult because light rays are not easy to see. Therefore, the way to measure the angle is by measuring the shadows created by light rays. The shorter the shadow is, the more direct the angle of the light ray. As a result, the hotter the temperature is.
14 That is why asphalt (沥青) roads get so hot in direct sunlight. Dark soil and rocks also get very hot. Light colored sand and rocks do not get as hot because they reflect light, while dark colored things absorb light.
Texture also helps determine temperature. 15 Rough textures cause light to bounce around at many angles, and each time a little more energy is absorbed. Therefore, rough surfaces get hotter than smooth surface.
A.Why do some things get hotter than others?
B.It refers to how smooth or rough a surface is.
C.The angle determines the amount of heat the sun produces.
D.After midday the sun lowers and the angle creates less heat.
E.The sun’s path is high overhead and at its hottest at midday.
F.Dark colors get hotter than light colors in the same temperature.
G.On the other hand, the angle of insolation near the equator (赤道) creates warmer temperatures.
Passage 4
A large part of the world’s total sugar supply comes from beets (甜菜). Most markets have this sugar, but it may not always be clearly labeled. You may think the white sugar you just bought is made from sugarcane (甘蔗), 16
Beets have been an important crop in human agriculture for centuries, with evidence of their planting dating back to ancient civilizations in Europe. However, it was not until the 16th century that beets’ potential as a source of sugar was realized. 17 Later, they slowly spread to America.
One key advantage of using beets for sugar is that compared to sugarcane, beets can be planted in cooler regions. 18 Beet sugar is also easier to produce, just requiring very basic processing. So in consideration of the cost-saving characteristics, beets are an attractive alternative to sugarcane.
19 The first step involves washing and cutting up the beets, followed by passing them through a machine that forces hot water past the beet pieces. The resulting juice is then combined with liquids squeezed from the beets. The mixture is then heated, leading to a thick, sweet liquid. Finally, the liquid is further processed to obtain beet sugar, which is chemically nearly the same with sugarcane sugar.
Beet sugar and sugarcane sugar can be used equally in cooking. 20 While some people are able to tell a difference, many others can’t tell whether a candy has been made with beet sugar or sugarcane sugar. So beet sugar sometimes can replace sugarcane sugar.
A.Beets can be easily processed.
B.But its source may be actually beets.
C.The taste of cooked food is quite similar
D.Let’s look at how exactly to make beet sugar.
E.In most cases, people tend to eat sugarcane sugar.
F.Besides, beets are tougher and able to grow on land of poor quality.
G.Therefore, beet sugar processing factories began to be built in Europe.
Passage 5
Why Some People Are Always Running Late
Some people always seem to be running late. No matter how early they start preparing, they still miss the meeting opening or the movie’s first scene. 21
In many cultures, being on time shows respect for others. People who have a strong sense of responsibility tend to keep to their schedules better. 22 It involves the habit of underestimating how long a task will take, with people assuming everything goes smoothly and thus thinking a job will take less time than it really does. 23 For instance, they might think a 10-minute trip is enough but forget about traffic jams or searching for lost keys. This leads to leaving late and arriving behind schedule.
24 Biology can also play a part. One factor is “time blindness”, common in people with ADHD (多动症). For them, time feels distorted: 10 minutes might feel like 2, and they often lose track of how much time has passed.
Another biological reason relates to sleep-wake preferences. “Night owls” often have body clocks that make them more alert at night and sleepier in the morning. 25 Melatonin (褪黑素), the hormone (激素) aiding sleep, stays in their bodies longer in the morning, so their brains take more time to fully wake up, which makes it hard for them to be on time in the morning. So next time your friend is late, it could be poor planning — or their biology!
A.But there’s more to lateness than just personal habits.
B.But why does this frustrating pattern keep happening?
C.They often fail to account for unexpected delays in their plans.
D.Some people simply don’t care about being on time for others.
E.This delay in their internal clock links to a key sleep hormone.
F.Being late can cause stress and even damage personal relationships.
G.However, there’s a common tendency experts refer to as the “planning bias”.

Passage 1
Everyone has insecurities (不安全感), and for many people, these insecurities centre around their physical appearance. 1 , here are some steps you can take to get your confidence back.
Exercise
If you’ re worried about feeling overweight, the best way to deal with this problem is by getting some exercise. 2 , but physical activity helps to release endorphins (内啡肽) in your brain and they will make you feel good. These positive emotions will help you be kinder to yourself and feel better about things in general.
Positive affirmation (肯定)
Another thing you can try at home is practising a bit of self-care. This is a challenge, but rather than listing all of the things you don’t like about your appearance, start focusing on the things that you do like. 3 . If you’re struggling to start, ask a close friend or relative to tell you something they like about your appearance.
4
When you’ re lacking in confidence, it’s easy to stick to a safe routine because you don’t feel good in anything else. Try on something new next time you go shopping, or change the way you wear your hair. These are minor things, but experimenting with your look could be a great way to discover that something you didn’t think would look right before does indeed suit you.
5 , but remember that the world will do that for you-be kind to yourself and try these tips to help make you feel like you again.
A.Try new things
B.Try to stay relaxed
C.If you’ re curious about them
D.It’s easy to be strict with yourself
E.If you’ re sick of feeling low about your body
F.This might help you start to see yourself in a different way
G.Not only will you be working off additional calories and burning fat
Passage 2
Looking to improve your relationships with your family members? Learn how emotional intelligence (EQ) is your most effective tool for overcoming rifts (不利) and strengthening bonds. Here are five tips for improving family relationships.
6 Lack of communication is the loudest complaint in most families. The answer to “Why won’t they listen to me?” may be simply “You’re not listening to them.”
Practice generosity by both giving and receiving. 7 If we only focus on giving without being able to accept, we limit our ability to truly connect with others.
Take responsibility for what you communicate silently. More than our words, our tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions show how we feel. We have to listen to our tone of voice and look at ourselves in the mirror to assess how our feelings match our expressions. 8
Don’t try to solve problems for your loved ones. Caring for your family doesn’t mean taking charge of their problems, giving unsolicited (未经请求的) advice, or protecting them from their own emotions. 9
Acknowledge your errors to everyone. Saying you’re sorry when you hurt someone you love models humility (谦虚) and emotional integrity. 10 Apologizing proves you can forgive yourself and makes it easier to forgive others.
A.Listen if you expect to be heard.
B.EQ succeeds where other efforts at family harmony fail.
C.Recognize that both actions are part of a loving relationship.
D.Perhaps you and your family can seek out ways to exercise together.
E.You can demonstrate that no one is perfect, but everyone can learn at any age.
F.Loving words spoken with a forced smile don’t feel loving — they feel confusing.
G.Let them know their own strengths and allow them to ask you for help when they need i
Passage 3
Our conversations define us and shape us as individuals. 11 Just as an expert says, “The quality of our conversations is directly tied to our personal happiness, and to our social and professional success.” While issues like nutrition have become a public health priority, we know very little about the extraordinary human capacity - conversational abilities.
12 We struggle to engage in dialogue with people who are different from us. We forget to listen to others when they speak, which is the bedrock of empathy and cooperation. We give improper responses without knowing it.
For this reason, we urgently need to make conversational literacy a matter of public interest. This skill enables us to be more reflective and aware of the power of everyday conversation. It also helps us to identify and avoid harmful conversations. 13
When we have a real, face-to-face conversation and give our full attention, something special happens. 14 We unconsciously copy movements and coordinate with one another. Research also shows that our brains can become synchronised (同步) during meaningful conversations. The deeper the conversation, the stronger this connection becomes.
You can start building conversational literacy today. 15 Engaging in a genuine conversation will have a huge impact on the success and development — both personal and professional — of the youngest members of the family.
A.Our bodies naturally adjust to each other.
B.Everyday conversation comes very natural to us.
C.Consequently, our social relationship will improve.
D.They can create or destroy our social relationships.
E.This enables us to better recognize and express feelings.
F.Many of us do not understand how to handle a tough conversation.
G.You can try having family dinner talks without mobile phones in sight.
Passage 4
When friends have problems that seem never-ending, you can sense that hopelessness. Most of the time, when someone comes to you, they’re not expecting you to have all the answers or even talk to them. 16 Here’s how you can be helpful to people in their hardest times.
17 When you care about someone and think you know how to improve their situation, you want to give them some advice at once. However, you should ask them, “Do you want some ideas to improve the situation?” This way they have the choice to say no, and they’ll likely give you more attention when they’ve agreed to take your advice.
Be honest. 18 You can’t say, “I know how you feel.” Let them know you haven’t been there before, but you’ll try to put yourself in their shoes to help as much as you can. You can still be an ear, take some time to think about it, and then share your thoughts later.
Never promise. Even if you’ve been there before, you won’t know the final result. Your friend could approach his or her boss exactly like you did for a raise and end up being demoted (降职), at which point he or she might blame you. 19 Help her weigh the possible results, so that she can decide if it’s worth the possible reward.
Plan a trip. People can often find answers when they go on a trip. 20 Let themselves relax and clear their head for a while.
A.Advise with permission
B.Offer long-term support
C.You don’t always have to have the right words
D.So plan a fun-weekend trip with your friends
E.If your sister wants to take a risk, make sure she knows it is a risk
F.If you don’t know how someone feels, you can’t lie to them
G.They just want someone to help them through hard times
Passage 5
How to Improve Your English Reading Skills
Reading is an important skill in English learning. Good reading skills can help you understand English articles better and learn more new words. Here are some tips to improve your English reading skills.
21 Before you start reading, look at the title, the pictures and the first sentence of each paragraph. This can help you know the main idea of the article quickly.
22 Don’t read the article word by word. Try to read the whole sentence or the whole paragraph. This can help you read faster and understand the article better. If you meet a new word, don’t stop to look it up in the dictionary at once. You can guess its meaning from the context.
23 It’s important to choose the right books to read. If you are a beginner, you can read simple storybooks or English newspapers for students. As your reading skills improve, you can read more difficult books, like novels and biographies.
24 Practice makes perfect. You should read English every day. Even a short passage is enough. You can read for 15 to 20 minutes every morning or evening.
25 After reading an article, you can write a short summary of it. This can help you remember what you read and improve your writing skills at the same time. You can also talk about the article with your classmates or teachers.
A.Read widely
B.Guess the meaning of new words
C.Skim the article first
D.Read every day
E.Read in groups
F.Don’t read word by word
G.Do some after-reading activities

Passage 1
In recent years, more people have begun to prioritize their emotional well-being over constant availability. The phrase “protect your peace” has become a guiding principle for those who feel exhausted by endless demands, unspoken duties, and relationships that take more than they give. 1 It is a response to burnout.
People begin to withdraw not because they do not care, but because they have spent too long caring without limits. 2 Some conversations are difficult but necessary. The challenge lies in knowing when silence preserves your well-being and when it quietly costs you your sense of self.
Boundaries are often misunderstood as rules imposed (强加) on others. 3 They reflect who you believe you are and what you believe you are allowed to need. Many people struggle with boundaries not because they lack communication skills, but because they have internalized the belief that their worth is tied to how much they give.
4 Healthy, loving relationships thrive on clarity and care. Silence can create distance, while thoughtful communication can strengthen trust. Explaining a boundary does not weaken it. When done with honesty and kindness, it helps others understand that your limits are not rejection, but preservation.
Boundaries are not demands. They are signals. They show others what we value and what we will protect. Over time, this clarity reshapes relationships, making room for mutual respect. Protecting your peace is not a single decision but an ongoing practice. It requires reflection, communication, and the willingness to redefine strength. In choosing yourself with honesty and care, you do not lose connection. 5
A.This shift isn’t about selfishness.
B.Instead, you create healthier ones.
C.As a matter of fact, they are rooted in identity.
D.Healthy relationships often require regular apology.
E.Protecting your peace doesn’t remove the need for explanation.
F.Yet protecting your peace doesn’t mean avoiding all discomfort.
G.It means refusing to lose yourself in the process of deep reflection.
Passage 2
We’ve all been there, sitting in the middle of a conversation that suddenly hits a dead end, leaving us desperately searching for something to say. 6 The key is to be prepared. It can be helpful to keep a few topic ideas up your sleeve, so you can revive the conversation if it starts to drag.
Introduce a new topic. If the current subject has run its course, switching to a new topic is recommended. 7 When their interest begins to flag, it’s better to switch to something new, even if we feel we have more to say on the topic.
8 Discovering shared interests or experiences can give us lots to talk about. Whether it’s a mutual hobby, a favorite TV show, or a recent event, we can ask the person their views and share our own thoughts. In this way, people can see each other’s perspectives, respect each other’s differences, and avoid arguments.
Use humor. A light-hearted joke or funny observation can break the ice and ease any tension. Laughing with someone is a great way to bond with them. 9 By starting your conversation with a funny question, you set a friendly tone for even the most serious subjects.
Pay a compliment. Giving sincere praise or acknowledging something interesting about the person can make them happy and set a positive tone for the conversation. 10 Or “Your company logo is really cool; tell me more about it”.
A.Offer a personal story.
B.Find common ground.
C.For example,"I love your shirt, where did you get it?"
D.It can help to pay closer attention to our partner’s interest.
E.The good news is that such a conversation can be rescued.
F.Introduce a quick and simple game like"Would You Rather?"
G.Sometimes, the most in-depth talks start with an amusing opener.
Passage 3
Close friends are connected to a happy and meaningful life. But what if you’ve recently moved to a new place, taken a new job, your closest friends have all gone off to college, and you’re naturally shy? 11 After all, they can be so important in improving your positive feelings and meaning in life.
12 For every 10 hours spent together, there is about a 4% increase in the possibility of calling that person a friend rather than a casual acquaintance (熟人). People begin to move from acquaintances to not-so-close friends after spending around 30 hours together. It takes at least 140 hours together to become close friends, and it takes at least 300 hours together before someone is thought of as a best friend.
Be an active listener. When you are paying attention to what your conversation partner is saying, they feel understood, accepted, and cared for. How do you make it obvious that you are paying attention? Simple movements such as eye contact and nodding will help. 13
Open up. Real friendships need honesty. 14 Start with small truths, like your favorite hobby or a recent trouble. Sharing little by little builds trust, helping you connect in the long term.
Be helpful. One thing about friendship is universal (普遍的): Friends help one another out. In traditional societies, this often meant sharing food or helping one another build a house. 15 But you can also help your new acquaintance by helping with homework, offering a ride when their car is under repair, or simply providing information they need.
A.Reach out in time.
B.Spend time together.
C.Why is it necessary for you to start first?
D.But you don’t have to share deep secrets at first.
E.And they make both sides of you enjoy the conversation.
F.In the modern world, sharing food is still a great way to try.
G.Is there anything you can do to make stronger connections with other people?
Passage 4
Having a good relationship with your roommate is important. 16 If you and your roommates make the effort, a peaceful and happy home is in your future.
Before starting the journey to find a roommate, it’s important to make sure you will get along. Take a moment to think about your living preferences before making a decision. Getting along doesn’t mean you and your roommate have to share all of the same interests or be best friends. 17
Once you’ve found a friendly roommate, the next key step for a warm living environment is to set clear rules through a roommate agreement. This document should include rights and responsibilities, covering rent payments, chores, and privacy. 18 Besides, agreeing on personal space rules also makes sure both of you feel comfortable at home.
Achieving a fair way of dealing with money also helps avoid arguments. This includes dividing the cost of rent, bills, and other shared costs in a way that everyone agrees on. Dividing rent equally (平等地) among roommates is nice. 19 In this case, it might be better to decide each person’s rent flexibly (灵活地).
20 . Creating an environment where open and regular communication is welcomed is key to solving problems before they get worse. One way of keeping communication clear is to have regular “check-in” meetings. They provide roommates with time to talk about home things, share problems in a helpful manner, and celebrate successes or share personal news.
A.Your lifestyles and values just have to be similar.
B.A friendly atmosphere depends on how you think.
C.However, one’s room might have more advantages.
D.You can include what you want to list in the agreement.
E.Living with others may seem hard, but it doesn’t have to be.
F.Communication is the basis of good roommate relationships.
G.Clear discussions about money and chore sharing prevent fights.
Passage 5
Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a conflict? How are you supposed to make things better without completely giving in to the other party? 21 There are practical steps you can take to improve the situation and make things right.
22 Before jumping into a conversation, take a moment to understand the issue at hand, because preparedness is the key. You should give yourself some time to figure out what’s actually troubling you. Try to separate your wants from your needs, so your future conversations can be as productive as possible.
Lighten the conversation with positive body language. Your body language can significantly impact the direction of the conversation. 23 Try keeping your body language neutral (中立的) if you’re having difficulty staying calm. For example, avoid crossing your arms or turning away when the other person speaks. Simple gestures, like a gentle touch or an active, thoughtful response, can help guide the conversation in a more relaxed direction.
Talk about the present instead of the past. In a conflict, people often bring up past fault. Whether you made a mistake in the past or the other person said something rude months ago, discussing the past won’t help you solve whatever is happening now. In fact, it can make things worse. 24
Listen carefully to the other party. 25 Show that you’re listening by repeating the key points that the other person makes. And you can summarize their main points or ask questions to clarify any misunderstandings. This helps ensure you’re both on the same page and that the conversation stays productive.
A.Take it easy.
B.Stand in the other party’s shoes.
C.Focus on the other person’s body language.
D.Be clear about what the exact problem is.
E.Nervous body language worsens conversations.
F.Let the other person share their ideas without cutting in.
G.Instead, focus on the current issue and work together to find a solution

B.Break out of your comfort zone.
C.Remember them forever with plenty of pictures.
D.Wake up early and it is a magical time for photos.

D.A travel companion might make a world of difference.

话题2 科普知识
【答案】1.D 2.F 3.E 4.G 5.C

【答案】6.E 7.B 8.F 9.G 10.A

【答案】11.C 12.G 13.D 14.F 15.B

11.上文“If people prefer warm or cold weather all year long, where should they go? Or if they liked cold weather, where would they go? The answer to this question depends upon the angle at which sunlight hits the Earth. (如果人们全年都喜欢温暖或寒冷的气候,他们该去哪里?或者如果他们喜欢寒冷,又该去哪里?这个问题的答案取决于阳光照射地球的角度。)”提出了问题并指出答案与阳光角度有关。C选项“The angle determines the amount of heat the sun produces. (这个角度决定了太阳产生的热量多少。)”承接上文,具体说明了角度是如何影响气候的——通过决定热量多少,从而为下文引出“日射角”的概念做了铺垫。下文“The angle at which sunlight strikes the earth’s surface is called the angle of insolation (日射). (阳光照射地球表面的角度被称为日射角)”则正式引入这一核心概念。故选C项。
12.上文“The angle of insolation is always smaller near the North and South Poles, which results in colder temperatures there. (日射角在南北极附近总是较小,这导致那里的气温较低。)”解释了极地寒冷的原因。G选项“On the other hand, the angle of insolation near the equator (赤道) creates warmer temperatures. (另一方面,赤道附近的日射角则导致气温较高。)”通过“On the other hand”与上文构成对比,补充了赤道地区的情况,使对日射角与温度关系的说明更加完整。故选G项。
13.上文“In the morning the sun is close to the horizon and at midday it is at its highest in the sky. (早晨太阳接近地平线,正午时在天空中处于最高点)”描述了太阳在一天中的位置变化。D选项“After midday the sun lowers and the angle creates less heat. (正午过后太阳降低,角度产生的热量减少。)”承接上文,补充了正午之后太阳位置及热量的变化,使对太阳日运动轨迹的描述更加完整。下文“Measuring the angle of insolation is difficult because light rays are not easy to see. (测量日射角很困难,因为光线不易被看见。)”则转而讨论测量难题,与D选项共同构成对日射角的完整介绍。故选D项。
14.下文“That is why asphalt (沥青) roads get so hot in direct sunlight. (这就是为什么沥青路在阳光直射下会变得那么热)”可推知,设空处需说明沥青路在阳光直射下会变得那么热的原因,F选项“Dark colors get hotter than light colors in the same temperature. (在相同的温度下,深色比浅色更热。)”阐述了这一原理,同时与下文“That”构成指代关系。故选F项。
15.上文“Texture also helps determine temperature. (质地也有助于决定温度。)”引出“质地”这一新因素。B选项“It refers to how smooth or rough a surface is. (它指的是表面光滑或粗糙的程度。)”承接上文,用“It”指代上文的“Texture”,对“质地”这一术语进行定义。下文“Rough textures cause light to bounce around at many angles, and each time a little more energy is absorbed. Therefore, rough surfaces get hotter than smooth surface. (粗糙的质地会使光线在许多角度间反射,每一次都有更多一点的能量被吸收。因此,粗糙表面比光滑表面更热。)”则基于这一定义,具体解释粗糙质地如何导致温度升高。故选B项。

【答案】21.B 22.G 23.C 24.A 25.E

G.Let them know their own strengths and allow them to ask you for help when they need i
【答案】6.A 7.C 8.F 9.G 10.E
【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章就如何利用情商改善家庭关系提出了五点建议,包括学会倾听、平衡给予与接受、注意非语言沟通、尊重家人的独立性以及勇于承认错误。
6.下文“Lack of communication is the loudest complaint in most families. The answer to “Why won’t they listen to me?” may be simply “You’re not listening to them.” (缺乏沟通是大多数家庭中最强烈的抱怨。“他们为什么不听我说?”这个问题的答案可能很简单:“你没有在听他们说。”)”指出了沟通问题的核心在于双向倾听的缺失。A选项“Listen if you expect to be heard. (如果你期望别人能听你的想法,就要先去倾听)”作为本段小标题,精准概括了下文的核心观点——倾听是相互的,想要被理解先要理解他人,与下文“观点—阐释”关系。故选A项。
7.上文“Practice generosity by both giving and receiving. (通过给予和接受来实践慷慨)”提出了本段的核心建议——慷慨既包括给予也包括接受。C选项“Recognize that both actions are part of a loving relationship. (认识到这两种行为都是充满爱的关系的一部分)”承接上文,进一步阐释为何给予和接受都不可或缺——它们共同构成健康关系的基础。下文“If we only focus on giving without being able to accept, we limit our ability to truly connect with others. (如果我们只专注于给予而不能接受,我们就限制了自己与他人真正建立联系的能力)”则从反面强调了只会给予不会接受的弊端,与C选项形成“正面阐释—反面论证”的逻辑呼应。故选C项。
8.上文“Take responsibility for what you communicate silently. More than our words, our tone of voice, body language, and facial expressions show how we feel. We have to listen to our tone of voice and look at ourselves in the mirror to assess how our feelings match our expressions. (为你无声传达的信息负责。比起言语,我们的语调、肢体语言和面部表情更能展示我们的感受。我们必须倾听自己的语调,照镜子评估自己的感受与表情是否一致)”强调了非语言沟通的重要性以及自我觉察的必要性。F选项“Loving words spoken with a forced smile don’t feel loving — they feel confusing. (带着勉强微笑说出的爱的话语并不让人感到被爱——它们让人感到困惑)”承接上文,具体举例说明当语言与非语言信息不一致时会给对方造成困扰,从而强化了上文“自我觉察”的重要性。故选F项。

(道歉证明你能原谅自己,也让原谅他人变得更容易)”则进一步阐述了道歉带来的连锁反应——自我原谅和宽恕他人,与E选项共同构成道歉的多重价值。故选E项。

话题4 社会关系

In traditional societies, this often meant sharing food or helping one another build a house.(关于友谊有一件事是普遍的:朋友互相帮助。在传统社会中,这通常意味着分享食物或互相帮助建造房屋。)”表明了朋友互相帮助的普遍性以及在传统社会中朋友互相帮助的方式,下文“But you can also help your new acquaintance by helping with homework, offering a ride when their car is under repair, or simply providing information they need.(但你也可以通过帮助做作业、在他们的车需要修理时提供搭车服务,或者只是提供他们需要的信息来帮助你的新朋友。)”表明了在现代社会中帮助新朋友的方式。选项F“在现代世界,分享食物仍然是一个很好的尝试”符合语境,选项F中的“In the modern world”与上文的“In traditional societies”形成对比,且选项F中的“sharing food is still a great way to try”与下文的“you can also help your new acquaintance by…”相呼应。故选F。
【答案】16.E 17.A 18.G 19.C 20.F
【语篇导读】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了与室友建立良好关系的实用方法,包括选择适配室友、制定包含权利责任与分摊规则的协议、灵活处理费用分配及通过定期沟通预防矛盾等关键步骤。
16.空前句“Having a good relationship with your roommate is important.(与室友建立良好关系很重要)”点明主题,强调重要性;空后句“If you and your roommates make the effort, a peaceful and happy home is in your future.(如果你和你的室友做出努力,一个和平快乐的家就在你的未来)”提到,如果双方努力,就能实现和平快乐的家,转向积极解决方案。选项E“Living with others may seem hard, but it doesn’t have to be.(和别人住在一起可能看起来很难,但事实并非如此)”通过承认潜在挑战(承上),同时暗示问题可解决(启下),为后文的努力与结果做铺垫,承上启下,符合语境。故选E。
17.空前句“Getting along doesn’t mean you and your roommate have to share all of the same interests or be best friends.(相处融洽并不意味着你和你的室友必须拥有相同的兴趣或成为最好的朋友)”提到,相处融洽不要求兴趣相同或成为挚友,否定了表面共性。选项A“Your lifestyles and values just have to be similar.(你们的生活方式和价值观必须相似)”提到只需生活方式和价值观相似,直接承接空前句的“不要求兴趣相同”,指出核心相似点(生活方式和价值观),承接上文,符合语境。故选A。
18.空前句“This document should include rights and responsibilities, covering rent payments, chores, and privacy.(这份文件应该包括权利和责任,包括租金、家务和隐私)”详述室友协议内容;空后句“Besides, agreeing on personal space rules also makes sure both of you feel comfortable at home.(此外,在个人空间规则上达成一致也能确保你们在家里感觉舒适)”补充协议延伸。选项G“Clear discussions about money and chore sharing prevent fights.(关于金钱和家务分担的明确讨论可以防止争吵)”说明清晰讨论金钱和杂务分工可预防争执,总结空前句的“租金、杂务”要点,点明其作用(防冲突),同时与空后句的“舒适”形成因果链(讨论规则→避免冲突→确保舒适),起到承上启下作用。故选G。
19.空前句“Dividing rent equally among roommates is nice.(在室友之间平均分摊房租是不错的)”肯定平等分租;空后句“In this case, it might be better to decide each person’s rent flexibly.(在这种情况下,最好是灵活地决定每个人的租金)”提出例外方案。
空后句“Creating an environment where open and regular communication is welcomed is key to solving problems before they get worse.(创造一个欢迎公开和定期交流的环境是在问题恶化之前解决问题的关键)”聚焦沟通的核心作用;下文“One way of keeping communication clear is to have regular “check-in” meetings.( 保持沟通清晰的一种方法是定期召开“定期”会议)”进一步以“定期会议”例证沟通实践。选项F“Communication is the basis of good roommate relationships.(交流是良好室友关系的基础)”作为段落主题句,直接概括后文核心(沟通环境的重要性),且“basis”与后文“key”形成同义替换。故选F。
【答案】21.A 22.D 23.E 24.G 25.F
21.根据上文“Have you ever found yourself in the middle of a conflict? How are you supposed to make things better without completely giving in to the other party?(你是否曾经发现自己陷入冲突之中? 故选A项。
22.根据下文“Before jumping into a conversation, take a moment to understand the issue at hand, because preparedness is the key. You should give yourself some time to figure out what’s actually troubling you.(在开始对话之前,花点时间了解手头的问题,因为做好准备是关键。你应该给自己一些时间弄清楚到底是什么在困扰你)”可知,上文说的是要花点时间了解手头的问题,弄清楚到底是什么在困扰你,可推理出空白处表达的是要明确你的问题是什么,D选项“Be clear about what the exact problem is(明确确切的问题是什么)”能够概括该段主旨,适合作为本段的主题句。故选D项。
23.根据上文“Your body language can significantly impact the direction of the conversation(你的肢体语言会显著影响对话的方向)”以及下文“Try keeping your body language neutral if you’re having difficulty staying calm.(如果你难以保持冷静,试着让你的肢体语言保持中立)”可知,上文说的是肢体语言会显著影响对话的方向,下文说的是如果你难以保持冷静,试着让你的肢体语言保持中立,可推理出空白处表示的是不好的肢体语言的负面影响,E选项“Nervous body language worsens conversations.(紧张的肢体语言会使对话变得更糟)”表达的含义符合语境。故选E项。
24.根据上文“In a conflict, people often bring up past fault. Whether you made a mistake in the past or the other person said something rude months ago, discussing the past won’t help you solve whatever is happening now. In fact, it can make things worse(在冲突中,人们经常提起过去的过错。无论你过去犯了错误,还是对方几个月前说了粗鲁的话,讨论过去都无助于解决现在发生的事情。事实上,这会让事情变得更糟)”可知,上文强调讨论过去不好,会让事情变得更糟,可推理出空白处应该提出相反的做法,即关注当下。G选项“Instead, focus on the current issue and work together to find a solution(相反,专注于当前的问题,共同努力找到解决方案)”符合语境,“instead”承接上文,引出正确的做法。故选G项。
25.根据上文“Listen carefully to the other party(认真倾听对方)”以及下文“Show that you’re listening by repeating the key points that the other person makes(通过重复对方提出的要点来表明你在倾听)”可知,上文说的是要认真倾听对方,下文说的是通过重复对方提出的要点来表明你在倾听,可推理出此处是在讲倾听时的具体做法。F选项“Let the other person share their ideas without cutting in(让对方分享他们的想法,不要插嘴)”是认真倾听的表现之一,符合语境,与下文的内容相衔接。故选F项。
