Chocolate is a favorite of many and can be found in many desserts. But it is usually thought of as an unhealthy delight to be eaten only occasionally. Now Swiss scientists have found a way to make chocolate healthier for you and for the planet too.The traditional method of chocolate making only uses the seeds and that is wasteful and not sustainable. The new method uses the entire cocoa fruit instead of just the seeds, and that makes it eco-friendly and sweet without using added sugar.
Researchers at Zurich's Federal Institute of Technology recently published their work in the journal Nature Food. The new chocolate does not need any added sugar due to the natural sweetness in the cocoa fruit. In fact, the juice contains 14 percent sugar which is distilled (蒸馏) down to a concentrated syrup (糖浆) and then combined with the fruit pulp to form a gel (凝胶).When the gel is added to cocoa beans to make chocolate,it is naturally sweet.
The mixtures were tested by trained specialists using small pieces of chocolate that weighed just five grams each to find out which one worked the best. But besides getting rid of added refined sugar (精制糖) to the chocolate, using the fruit also boasted the fiber content.
The traditional system of cocoa production in Africa and South America is not sustainable. The industry is also suffering from the soaring price of cocoa beans and the poverty of the cocoa farmers.Using the entire fruit could help ease these two issues.“Not only do the farmers get significantly extra income through using cocoa pulp, but also the important industrial processing is happening in the country of origin, creating jobs, creating value that can be distributed in the country of origin,” Anian Schreiber said.
Chocolate producers in Africa,South America, and even in the US,are already contacting Mishra, the main researcher of the study, about the new method. In Switzerland, chocolate producers including Lindt are starting to use the entire cocoa plant and not just the beans, but none have completely removed refined sugar.

What if everything happens for a reason? It's a theory that we've all heard more than once. And in many ways, burnt toast theory can be seen as a modern take on this classic idea, implying that every little inconvenience we experience in our day-to-day lives happens for a bigger reason.
We've all been there.Say you accidentally burn your toast before leaving for work.According to burnt toast theory, this single, tiny inconvenience is enough to have a domino effect (多米诺效应).Your morning is then pushed back by what, maybe three to five minutes? Perhaps that is enough time to leave the house a little bit later than usual, and to avoid getting in a car accident.Or it might mean you end up getting a later train, and avoid bumping into someone who you'd really rather avoid.
In other words, the burnt toast theory is a reminder to shift your thinking pattern. When we choose to view the world in a more positive light,we can help to reduce feelings of anxiety, and release our fear of being out of control of the world around us.It prevents us from thinking over something that isn't really all that bad in the grand perspective of things and encourages us to make meaning of challenges we may experience, thus making us more adaptive to the future setbacks. The next time you feel yourself becoming annoyed or frustrated by an inconvenience in your life, try reshaping your thoughts by telling yourself why you're grateful for the inconvenience.
While maintaining a positive mindset can go a long way, burnt toast theory is not without its drawbacks.Be mindful that only allowing yourself to focus on positive thoughts can mean that you are denying yourself the chance to properly engage with challenging or difficult emotions, instead focusing on creating a false positive profile.

(2025·河北省省级冲刺卷Ⅱ)
The phrase “like father, like son” suggests that children might inherit (继承) some of their personality from their parents—alongside their looks.
But there may be little truth in this,as a new study has found that people are only slightly more likely to share personality traits (特质) with their parents than they are with a stranger.
“It is impossible to accurately predict a child's personality traits from those of their mother or father,” researchers claim.Report author Dr.Rene Mottus, from the University of Edinburgh, told the Mail,“In almost every language, there is a form of the English saying ‘like father, like son’.Many people believe this and sometimes make judgements about people based on their parents. But it turns out this saying is not very accurate when it comes to personality traits—our patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.”
In the study, the researchers involved 1,000 pairs of relatives, including parents and their adult children, sisters and brothers, and other pairs of family members. The participants self reported their levels of various character traits, including how neurotic (神经质的),outgoing, careful, open and agreeable they were. These traits are referred to as “the big five” and they are often used by psychologists when conducting personality studies.
The pairs of relatives were also asked to report how satisfied they were with their own lives. To improve the accuracy of the results, researchers got a second opinion from an ‘informant (线人)’—usually the person's partner.“Self-ratings alone are not very trustworthy, but when two people agree on someone's traits, they must be on to something,” Dr.Mottus explained.
The results showed that the likelihood of inheriting personality traits and life satisfaction is around 40 percent. This is an increase on the 25 percent that had typically been found in previous studies involving self-reporting. Statistically, this figure is still not high enough to suggest that we are any more likely to share personality traits with our parents than we are with a stranger.

9.What does Rene Mottus think of the saying “like father, like son”?
A.Reliable. B.Practical.
C.Universal. D.Imprecise.
推理判断题。根据第三段中“But it turns out this saying is not very accurate when it comes to personality traits—our patterns of thinking, feeling and behaving.”可知,Rene Mottus认为“有其父必有其子”这种说法是不准确的。故选D。
