Who are your best friends on campus? Are they the ones you encountered most often in class? Are they your fellows in drama club or debate society? Something that has to influence whether people become friends is simple physical proximity. And, in fact, the most lasting friendships are developed between people whose paths cross frequently.
A number of studies have demonstrated the effects of proximity on who become friends. One was conducted at MIT in the 1940s. The incoming students were randomly assigned to 17 ten-unit apartment buildings that were isolated from other residential areas, and few of them knew one another before.
The investigators asked each resident to name the three people in the student housing project with whom they socialized most often. The effect of proximity was striking: two-thirds of those listed as friends lived in the same building as the participant, even though those in the same building represented only 5 percent of the target residents. More striking still was the pattern of friendships within each building. Even though the physical distance between apartments was quite small — 19 feet between the doorways of neighboring apartments and 89 feet between those at the ends of each hallway — 41 percent of those living in neighboring apartments listed each other as friends, compared with only 10 percent of those living at opposite ends of the hallway.
Proximity leads to friendship because it facilitates chance encounters. If so, then pure physical distance should matter less than functional distance — the influence of an architectural layout to encourage or discourage contact between people. The MIT study shows just how important functional distance is. As the following Figure indicates, the stairs are positioned such that upstairs residents will encounter the residents of apartments at the turn of the stairs much more often than the residents of the middle apartments. And in fact, the residents of the stair-end apartment formed twice as many friendships with their upstairs neighbors as those living in the middle apartments.
Thus, it’s functional distance more than physical distance that is decisive. Proximity promotes friendship because it brings people together. Actually, in later studies involving more diverse populations, the largest effects of proximity on friendship formation have been found between people of different races, ages, or social classes.
1.What does the word “proximity” in paragraph 2 most probably mean in the passage?

Penguins are some of the world’s most familiar and beloved birds, but southern rockhoppers are the tough guys of the penguin world. Their fondness for colonies (聚居地) high over thousands of feet separates them from the other penguin species that prefer soft, level ground in the Falklands.
One evening, I struggle to keep up with some scientists as they march through thick grass in the Falklands. They are looking for rockhoppers that have pencil-case-size black boxes taped to their backs and collecting those boxes, which contain GPS data loggers (记录仪). Some also track diving and heart-rate information. Later, in the scientists’ field station, we gather around a computer screen, analyzing the collected data, which will give us a critical read on ocean conditions, revealed by the birds’ responses.
With a lifespan of 10 to 15 years, the species can withstand the occasional disaster and rebuild their population over time. But as colonies damaged by human activities struggle to recover, a string of disasters has knocked them down. Despite their bravery, rockhoppers are highly sensitive. Research by these scientists shows that even a small increase in sea temperature can affect the birds’ food supply and lower chick and adult survival. Besides, changing weather is causing unseasonably intense storms, killing chicks who haven’t yet grown their thick, waterproof feathers.
However, moving to cooler water isn’t an option. The constant winds there would push the little penguins into the icy coasts of Antarctica, and there’s no land where they could build new colonies. These scientists are trying to re-establish the native grass. “It may be impossible to stop the changes sweeping their ocean habitats,” Quillfeldt, a seabird ecologist says. “But to help them on land, at the breeding (繁殖) sites, is something we can actually do.”
Thinking of the young rockhopper leaping over a fearful gap, I ask the scientists: Can rockhoppers’ courage be an advantage for their survival? Quillfeldt feels it may. Curiosity and bravery can encourage seabirds to find ways to adapt. Don’t forget they’ve got attitude.
5.What is the function of the black boxes on the rockhoppers’ backs?
A.To locate GPS data loggers. B.To distinguish birds’ responses.
C.To analyze the survival rate. D.To record data about ocean conditions.
6.What may bring a challenge to rockhoppers’ population?
A.Their lengthy lifespan. B.Their fondness for high rocks.
C.Their thick waterproof feathers. D.Their sensitivity to the climate change.
7.What could be a practical way to help rockhoppers according to paragraph 4?
A.Establish new colonies. B.Improve the breeding sites.
C.Stop the environmental changes. D.Move to the coasts of Antarctica.
8.What is the author’s attitude toward rockhoppers’ future?
A.Hopeful. B.Reserved. C.Dismissive. D.Doubtful.

If you love art, “Picasso” speaks a lot. Pablo Picasso (1881—1973) wasn’t just an exceptional painter; he was a sculptor, printmaker, stage designer ... Due to his amazing skills, he became an outstanding figure in all of these fields.
One of Picasso’s amazing feats was representing realism and contemporary culture through art. He, along with Georges Braque, gave birth to cubism— one of the most revolutionary movements in modern art, paving the way for nearly all abstract art that followed. His exploration of art did not stop with cubism as he wanted to make something more inspirational, and thus came into existence—Collage (拼贴画). Collage was a different kind of art in which Picasso incorporated several signs and used some metaphorical terms to give them a concrete meaning.
Picasso received training from his father, who was an art teacher and a painter. At the age of 16, Picasso had already lost a liking to traditional art techniques and desired to introduce something new. His search began when he joined the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He experimented with different styles of art and explored grounds like still life, portraits, mythological scenes, and landscapes. His work was daring and he always preferred to use innovative perspective.
Picasso also produced sculptures and took an interest in theatrical productions. His most remarkable and politically charged work was “Guernica”, produced in response to the Spanish Civil War when the town suffered a terrifying bombing. To this day, it is a classic representation of war horrors.
On April 8, 1973, Picasso passed away in the city of Mougins, France, leaving behind a treasure of art that is celebrated still to this day.
9.What does the underlined word “feats” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Dreams. B.Achievements. C.Discoveries. D.Inspirations.
10.What was the driving force behind Picasso’s artistic exploration?
A.His training in the Academy. B.His pursuit of innovation.
C.His admiration for his father. D.His loyalty to traditional art.
11.What was Picasso’s intention in creating “Guernica”?
A.To show his artistic talent. B.To pour out personal emotional pain.
C.To record a historical event. D.To speak out against wartime violence.
12.Which of the following best describes Picasso?
A.Talented and consistent. B.Creative and ambitious.
C.Pioneering and all-round. D.Successful and realistic.

Microbats could be regarded as nature’s forgotten superheroes. These tiny creatures can consume insects up to half their body weight in a single night, helping to control mosquito numbers and protect agricultural crops. Yet urbanization has brought significant changes to their living conditions. Housing development and vegetation loss have reduced their feeding and resting areas, which may place some microbat species at growing risk.
Microbats depend on two essential resources: suitable feeding grounds and secure resting sites. While high-quality feeding habitats have been identified in Sydney, Caragh Threlfall, a research fellow at the University of Melbourne, points out that land managers should also protect resting places to support the long-term survival of microbat populations.
Notably, bats are not the only ones affected. For instance, moth numbers have fallen in some urban areas, which can in turn affect the local food chain. “Our work showed that overall insect populations decline with increasing urban density (密度),” the researcher explains.
There are more than 80 known bat species in Australia, 43 of which are classified as locally or nationally threatened. According to Queensland’s Department of Environment and Heritage Protection, 35 of these threatened species are microbats. “To help bats coexist in cities, we need to keep large, old trees across the urban landscape and preserve areas that provide good feeding habitats,” Threlfall adds.
Researchers from Brisbane and Sydney have observed fewer bat species in heavily built-up areas, whereas suburbs can still support a rich variety of bat life. This suggests that some species can tolerate moderate levels of urban development, as long as sufficient trees remain in the environment. Beyond a certain point, however, bat populations begin to drop.
More comprehensive urban planning assessments that take bat habitat needs into account are currently underway for Melbourne’s bat communities. With this evidence, it is believed that future guidelines can be developed to protect bat species across Australian cities.
13.What led to the decline in microbats’ population?
A.Threats from rising wildlife.
B.Competition among bat species.
C.Development causing habitat damage.
D.Climate change affecting insect availability.
14.What do the figures in paragraph 4 mainly show?
A.The significance of protecting ancient trees.
B.The severe challenge facing Australian bats.
C.The wide distribution of bat species in Australia.
D.The extreme difficulty in saving rare bat species.
15.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.Microbats are unable to survive in urbanized areas.
B.Urban development will be slowed down across Australia.
C.Suburbs have more microbat species due to fewer residents.
D.Proper urban planning may lower the risk to microbat populations.
16.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Microbats: Nature’s Insect Eaters
B.Microbats: Friends of Urban Residents
C.Rescuing Microbats from Urbanization
D.Planning and Building Eco-Friendly Cities

For over a decade, I oversaw the marketing strategy for a large tech firm. I noticed a common workplace trap: Most fellows rushed from task to task, fueled by coffee and urgent requests, yet rarely stopped to reflect if their busyness was meaningful. This often led to hurried decisions, overlooked details, and stress — something I avoided with simple, practical strategies balancing efficiency and thoughtfulness.
Our office was always alive with activities: Emails poured in nonstop, unscheduled meetings popped up, and demands came from every direction. It was easy to acquiesce to every request without critical thought, which quickly left us mentally and physically exhausted. That’s why a recent tip from a business magazine hit home deeply with me: “Less hurry, better decisions.”
The core advice was simple yet powerful. First, pause (暂停) for 30 seconds before accepting any request. Ask: Is this my responsibility, or can it be handed off? Does it match my goals? This quick check prevents unnecessary energy-draining burdens. Second, write down the advantages and disadvantages of important decisions. Seeing costs and benefits in black and white clarifies priorities, especially when workplace time is precious.
I have also adopted two personal strategies over the years that prove invaluable. Time blocking — reserving two hours weekly on my calendar to focus without interruptions, reflect on ongoing projects, and catch up on tasks I’ve been putting off — helps me slow down and avoid the chaos of constant rushing. Additionally, for major decisions with no tight deadline, I always try to take a night and think about them the next day. A night’s rest often brings fresh perspective and clarity, making even the most complex choices much easier to address.
In fast-paced workplaces, we shouldn’t confuse busyness with productivity. Avoiding hurry doesn’t mean delaying tasks; it means giving decisions the thoughtful attention they deserve. By pausing, planning, and resting, we can work more efficiently and make wiser choices — without the stress of constant rushing.
17.Why does the author mention his work experience in the tech firm?
A.To complain about the heavy workload.
B.To present a common workplace situation.
C.To praise the efficiency of his former leaders.
D.To show the importance of marketing strategies.
18.What do the underlined words “acquiesce to” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Agree with. B.Comment on. C.Relate to. D.Hesitate over.
19.Which strategy did the author use to avoid hurried decisions?
A.Accepting all requests to avoid conflicts.
B.Asking others for help with tough decisions.
C.Working extra hours to finish tasks on time.
D.Sleeping on important decisions when possible.
20.What message does the author want to deliver?
A.Teamwork leads to better productivity.
B.Constant rushing harms mental health.
C.Simple strategies can help make wiser decisions.
D.Time blocking is the best way to manage work tasks.

Elaine recently bought a gorgeous stained-glass statement mirror on an online marketplace, and then she found she was rearranging her entire bedroom to match its luxurious aesthetic (美感) and color scheme. She didn’t have a bedroom redesign in her budget, but that wasn’t stopping her. Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make? This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.
The phenomenon got its name from French philosopher Denis Diderot. In 1769, Diderot penned an essay describing the receipt of a new dressing gown, which sparked a series of impulsive (易冲动的) purchases that sank him into debt — and thus lending his name to this psychological phenomenon.
This isn’t just a consequence of 18th-century behavior, though. The Diderot effect is alive and well today. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you fall victim to the Diderot effect. Psychotherapist Dr. Daryl Appleton says it’s a very human response, similar to the feeling when you put on brand-new clothes, but then wear your worn-out shoes — the mismatch is uncomfortable. What’s happening beneath the surface is partly neurological When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our “pleasure chemical” that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.
The Diderot Effect can show up anywhere from your closet to your career. Therapist Dr. Alfonso Ferguson says, “Often, what’s really happening underneath is a desire to feel in harmony with one’s space — to finally feel a sense of pride, peace, or even safety that may have been missing in other parts of life.” It’s not always a bad thing to want your space to progress with you. But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.
21.What is the main purpose of the first paragraph?
A.To analyse reasons.
B.To make a comparison.
C.To lead in the topic.
D.To present viewpoints.
22.What is the motivation behind the Diderot Effect according to paragraph 3?
A.An attempt to escape stress from one’s work.
B.A desire to achieve harmony in one’s life.
C.A rush to show off one’s wealth.
D.A biological urge to seek novelty.
23.What does the underlined word “compulsive” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Unrealistic.
B.Uncontrollable.
C.Adaptable.
D.Casual.
24.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.When One New Thing Changes Everything
B.The Psychology Behind Chasing Harmony
C.How Our Daily Needs Help Fuel Endless Purchase
D.The Science of Holding Back Endless Consumption

根据第一段“Something that has to influence whether people become friends is simple physical proximity. And, in fact, the most lasting friendships are developed between people whose paths cross frequently.(影响人们能否成为朋友的一个重要因素就是简单的物理距离相近。事实上,最持久的友谊往往产生于经常碰面的人之间。)”和第二段“ A number of studies have demonstrated the effects of proximity on who become friends. (多项研究已经证实了proximity对交友对象选择的影响。)”可知,最持久的友谊往往产生于经常碰面的人之间,指身体或社交上的接近对交友对象选择有影响,proximity指“身体或社交上的接近”。故选A项。
根据第二段“The incoming students were randomly assigned to 17 ten-unit apartment buildings that were isolated from other residential areas, and few of them knew one another before.(新生被随机分配到17栋十单元的公寓楼中,这些楼与其他住宅区隔开,且他们之前大多互不相识。)”以及第三段“The investigators asked each resident to name the three people in the student housing project with whom they socialized most often. The effect of proximity was striking: two-thirds of those listed as friends lived in the same building as the participant, even though those in the same building represented only 5 percent of the target residents. More striking still was the pattern of friendships within each building. Even though the physical distance between apartments was quite small — 19 feet between the doorways of neighboring apartments and 89 feet between those at the ends of each hallway — 41 percent of those living in neighboring apartments listed each other as friends, compared with only 10 percent of those living at opposite ends of the hallway.(研究人员让每位宿舍住户列出交往最频繁的三位住户。邻近效应十分显著:三分之二的好友都住在同一栋楼,尽管同楼住户仅占调查对象的5%。更惊人的是楼内的交友规律。即便公寓间距很小(相邻19英尺、走廊两端相距89英尺),41%的邻居互为好友,而走廊两端住户仅为10%。)”的调查结果可知,研究者采用的是案例研究法。故选A项。
根据第四段“As the following Figure indicates, the stairs are positioned such that upstairs residents will encounter the residents of apartments at the turn of the stairs much more often than the residents of the middle apartments. And in fact, the residents of the stair-end apartment formed twice as many friendships with their upstairs neighbors as those living in the middle apartments.(如下图所示,楼梯的布置使得楼上住户与位于楼梯拐角处的住户相遇的频率,要远高于他们与位于走廊中间公寓的住户相遇的频率。事实上,楼梯尽头公寓的住户与楼上邻居建立的友谊数量,是中层公寓住户的两倍。)”可以推断出,住在楼上7号公寓的居民可能与楼下拐角处的住户相遇频率更高,所以能交到更多朋友。故选D项。
4.主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“And, in fact, the most lasting friendships are developed between people whose paths cross frequently.(事实上,最长久的友谊往往产生于经常碰面的人之间。)”和最后一段“Proximity promotes friendship because it brings people together.(距离相近促进友谊,因为它让人们频繁相遇)”可知,文章核心是邻近性如何通过频繁相遇促进友谊,所以C项Proximity: Why Frequent Encounters Boost Friendship(邻近性:为何频繁相遇能促进友谊)符合语境。故选C项。

根据第三段的句子“When we seek something new, our brain releases more dopamine, often called our ‘pleasure chemical’ that drives desire. So, that rush you feel when you start fixing the things around the shiny new object is not just aesthetics; it’s brain chemistry. We’re born to long for novel things.(当我们寻求新事物时,大脑会释放更多多巴胺,这种物质常被称为“快乐化学物质”,它会驱动欲望。所以,当你开始为闪亮的新物品搭配周边事物时感受到的冲动,不仅仅是审美需求,更是大脑化学反应的结果。我们生来就渴望新奇事物)”可知,狄德罗效应的动机是寻求新奇事物的生理冲动。故选D项。
23.词句猜测题。根据第四段“But if it starts to feel compulsive, it can be pretty difficult to escape the cycle. You’ll keep chasing the next upgrade.(但如果这种感觉开始变得compulsive,就很难摆脱这个循环。你会不断地追求下一次升级)”可知,如果这种感觉变得“compulsive”,就会难以逃脱循环,不断追求下一次升级,暗示失去控制的状态。因此“compulsive”意为“无法控制的”,与Uncontrollable意义一致。故选B项。
24.主旨大意题。根据全文内容,特别是第一段的句子“Have you ever updated one thing in your home and suddenly found yourself with a laundry list of changes you want to make? This phenomenon is called the Diderot Effect.(你有没有过这样的经历:家里更新了一件东西,突然发现自己有一长串想要做的改变?这种现象被称为狄德罗效应)”可知,文章主要讲一件新事物如何引发连锁变化,即狄德罗效应。A项“When One New Thing Changes Everything(当一件新事物改变一切)”准确概括了这一核心内容,既形象又全面。故选A项。
