Passage 1
As digital technology develops rapidly, cyber fraud is causing more and more financial losses around the world. According to the World Economic Forum, the cost of cyber fraud could double between 2023 and 2027. Government agencies, companies, and ordinary people can all become targets. 1
Therefore, it is very important to take action. Here are some best practices to keep your data and money safe.
Continually update your computer and mobile devices
Cybercriminals often use known flaws in software to attack your devices. They look for holes in operating systems and browsers. 2 This is the most effective measure you can take. Regular updates fix security holes. They also reduce the risk of being attacked. You should turn on automatic updates whenever possible.
Use antivirus software and anti-malware protection
Besides using software flaws, criminals also use viruses and malware to take control of your computer. These attacks can happen without you knowing. Many new computers come with a free trial of antivirus software. You can buy it after the trial ends. Choose a good software solution. Keep it updated with the latest virus definitions. 3
Use good password habits
Passwords are the keys to your online life. For each account, use a long and different password. Update it regularly. Create strong passwords by combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. 4 Never use the same password for multiple accounts. Do not write passwords down or share them. For mobile devices, set a PIN or facial recognition. Turn on the auto-lock feature. For computers, set up separate profiles for family members. This allows you to apply restrictions to specific accounts.
5
Finally, do not forget about your home network. Cyber attackers may use it to steal your private information. Your Wi-Fi network is a common target. Start by setting a strong password for your Wi-Fi. Then choose good encryption, such as WPA2. Update your router’s software regularly. You can also hide your network from public view. Keeping it concealed from unauthorized connections adds extra protection. These steps will help keep your home network secure.
A. Buy new computers annually.
B. Strengthen your home network.
C. In fact, no one is completely safe.
D. Also, run a full scan at least once per week.
E. The best defense is to keep everything updated.
F. Avoid using personal information like your birthday.
G. Employ a computer engineer to be your own assistant.
Passage 2
How AI Is Used in Schools Today
AI is no longer just a future idea. 1 Schools are learning where these tools are helpful and where limits are needed. Many districts are combining AI with a K-12 online learning platform. This brings adaptive instruction, digital materials, and classroom resources together in one place. Personalizing Learning
2 They adjust difficulty right away. For example, students now do math tasks where AI gives hints to those who are stuck. It also adapts the same work for students who have already mastered the skill. One student told me, “It keeps me from getting stuck too long.” The teacher said it let her work with small groups. No one gets left behind.
Giving Teachers Time Back. Ask almost any teacher what they need more of. The answer is almost always the same: time. Time to plan well. Time to give meaningful feedback. Time to focus on students instead of paperwork. Used thoughtfully, AI can help reclaim some of that lost time. Teachers already use it to draft lesson outlines. 3 They spot patterns in student data. They identify common writing errors. They generate practice questions or examples. When AI handles these routine tasks, teachers gain something valuable. They get flexibility to focus on instruction and relationships. They can better meet student needs. Used the right way, AI gives teachers hours back each day. It creates initial drafts. It removes planning tasks. Teachers can now refine their lessons. They adjust their instruction. They meet their students’ needs.
4 AI tools help schools find academic or behavioral concerns sooner. They detect patterns like attendance issues, missing work, or common errors. This allows us to respond earlier. Problems can be fixed before they grow bigger. Using this information in data meetings helps us focus our discussions. We make better-informed decisions about student support.
Expanding Access to Learning. AI tools remove barriers for multilingual learners. They help struggling readers and students with disabilities. They provide translation, captioning, and speech-to-text. They offer read-aloud features, vocabulary support, and visual explanations. Students can now engage with grade-level content more independently. Instruction does not slow down. 5
A. Supporting Early Intervention
B. Teaching approaches are more important.
C. Adaptive AI programs study student work.
D. AI is not necessary in classroom nowadays.
E. They create leveled texts on the same topic.
F. No one is left behind, and no one is held back.
G. It is already being used in classrooms every day.
Passage 3
According to road safety charity Brake, of the 1,000 drivers it interviewed, 45% of men confessed to micro-sleeping while driving, as did 22% of women. 1
Micro-sleep is an incidence where the brain goes to sleep involuntarily for five to 10 seconds. 2 People wake up suddenly, often with a shock of the head.
“Your eyelids start drooping and you start to lose contact with reality,” says Prof. Jim Horne, director of Loughborough University's Sleep Research Centre. “You’re asleep a few seconds, then wake up, often with a shock.” This sudden head movement is how people normally know they have been micro-sleeping. 3
“Sleep has to last beyond a minute or two for your brain to remember it,” says Prof. Jim Horne, who studied driver tiredness for 10 years. “With micro-sleep, you are just left with a feeling of not knowing if you are coming or going.” Obviously, it is caused by fatigue, you fall into a good sleep.
Drivers are exceptionally vulnerable as driving can be tiring. The risk is higher in the afternoon as the body experiences a drop in energy levels. It is also riskier at night when a person usually asleep. 4 Young people need more sleep in general, so are more impaired by sleep loss. According to the Department for Transport, almost 20% of accidents on boring major roads are caused by micro-sleep.
Drivers have no excuse, says Prof. Jim Horne, "Sleep doesn't come from out of the blue. You can’t drive along alert one minute and falling asleep the next. There’s always adequate time to realise how sleepy you are." His advice is, to safely park, have a drink containing about 150 mg of caffeine, take a 15-minute nap, and then freshen up for five minutes before continuing the journey. 5
A. Young drivers too are more likely at risk.
B. The brain does not remember such short naps.
C. Caffeine will not kick in for at least 20 minutes.
D. It is “horrifying” statistic, but what does this mean?
E. It is sleep that is more likely happen in a tiring situation.
F. Caffeine intake will cause uncontrollable sleepiness over a period of time.
G. Young people are the drivers with the lowest accident rate caused by micro-sleep.
Passage 4
We have two sides to our brain, the right and the left side. The right side is often used when we're being creative.
1 When we want to do this, we tend to rely on the left side of the brain. If you want to improve your memory, one trick is to try bringing the right side of the brain into use.
2 A memory palace can simply be a place you know well, such as your house or flat, the route to your local shops, your school or your college. Because you know this place so well, it's easy to plan your journey through it knowing where everything is and what comes next.
3 For example, let's use a shopping list to see how it works. With your memory palace organized, you simply place one of the items from your shopping list in each place. Let’s imagine your memory palace is the walk to your nearest supermarket and the first thing on your shopping list is a pair of trainers. So, imagine a pair of trainers waiting at your front door, jumping up and down waiting to go out. It's good to make the picture in your head funny to help you remember.
The next stop is the gate to your house and the next item is a bunch of bananas. So, imagine a row of bananas hanging from your gate, each wearing a pair of sunglasses! And so on. As you follow the route to the supermarket, place one of the items at one of your easy-to-remember places on the journey. 4
It might be hard to see how this can be used to remember some of the subjects you might be studying. 5 For example, maybe you have to remember a list of dates, the steps necessary in making something or some historical events. Just remember to get that right side of your brain working to come up with scenes that are easy to remember, and put them in a familiar place.
A. But why not try?
B. But what if it doesn't work?
C. Now imagine you have to remember something.
D. However, some things can't be remembered this way.
E. One method of doing this is to create a memory palace.
F. On the other hand, the right side works in a different way.
G. Using your imagination like this will make it easy to remember.
H. However, we don't often use this side to help us remember things.

Passage 1
I'm studying English at a school in the UK at the moment and having a wonderful time, meeting new friends and getting to know the country. We have the chance to go on lots of trips and recently we visited the famous town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. 1 Our English teacher wanted us to do more than that.
Before we went, we prepared for the trip. 2 Some students did one on the environment, while another group wrote some questions about hobbies and interests. There were five groups altogether. I'm really interested in business studies and my group had questions to ask local businesspeople and shopkeepers.
We were there for the whole day and we all thought it would be best to do the research in the morning.
3 When we arrived in Stratford, each group went off around the town to ask local people their questions. It was really good fun. We had the chance to practise our English and the local people were very friendly and helpful. In fact, they told our teacher how polite they thought we all were.
Stratford is a lovely town and we spent the afternoon enjoying the sights. After lunch we looked round Holy Trinity Church, and of course we visited the house where the world's most famous playwright was born and grew up. 4 I got home feeling exhausted but I had had a fantastic day out.
Apart from being fun it was a great way to practise our English, and not only because we were able to speak to local people. 5 We took it in turns to stand up and explain to the other groups what our questions were about and the things we found out. We all enjoyed it so much we're hoping to repeat it later in the year in a new location.
A. However, many of the shops were closed.
B. We could then relax in the afternoon and go sightseeing.

F. In class the next day we presented the results of our questionnaires.
G. We worked in teams and created some questionnaires on different subjects.
Passage 2
Why I Never Went To University
As I finished my last year of high school, there was one question I heard over and over: "Which university are you going to?" The truth is, I never planned on going to university. 1 Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer in education. However, I just felt that traditional university education wasn't for me.
One of the main reasons is that I've always been more practical. 2 I enjoyed hands-on projects, whether it was fixing a bicycle or creating a website. The thought of spending four years in classrooms didn't appeal to me.
Instead of university, I opted for an apprenticeship in a local IT company. 3 This gave me a chance to gain practical skills and experience in the real world. At the same time, I was earning a salary, which was a bonus.
Furthermore, I noticed that many successful people in my field didn't necessarily have a degree. 4 This showed me that a university degree wasn't the only pathway to success.
Finally, I wanted to avoid student debt. Many of my friends who went to university are now struggling with loan payments. 5 Instead, I was able to save money during my apprenticeship and buy my first home much earlier than my peers.
Looking back, I have no regrets about my decision. I've managed to build a successful career without a university degree. My experience shows that there are different paths to success, and each person must choose the one that suits them best.
A. I think we are too quick to label people.
B. I simply didn't want to take on that financial burden at such a young age.
C. People often looked at me strangely when I told them I wasn't going to university.
D. I was always told that university was the best path for everyone, but I had my doubts.
E. I've always been more interested in doing things rather than learning about them in theory.
F. The work was challenging and exciting, and I was learning more than I ever did in a classroom.
G. The most successful IT entrepreneurs, such as Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg, are university dropouts.
Passage 3
Alice Waters, a chef and restaurant owner, is sitting in the kitchen garden of the Martin Luther King School in Berkeley, California. This garden is called the Edible Schoolyard, and students are preparing a vegetable bed as part of a lesson. Later, they will cook what they pick for lunch. 1 Each student receives 18 to 40 hours of tuition here a year, and much of the food grown is used in school meals.
Waters started a campaign in 1996 to raise funds for the Edible Schoolyard and the School Lunch Initiative. 2 Waters hopes these projects will set an example for the rest of the country. “Bad eating habits are a huge problem in the US,” she says. “Teaching about food cannot be left to parents.”
Marsha Guerrero, director of the School Lunch Initiative, explains, “This is mainly a teaching garden. 3 ” Nearby farms therefore supply additional food for school lunches, using fresh organic ingredients when possible.
In one gardening lesson, students choose a personal spot in the garden for the year. They observe and record insect life, soil changes, and plant growth. 4 Kitchen classes link to academic subjects: science is taught through nutrition and cooking techniques, geography through seasons and global eating habits.
Has Waters succeeded? Judging by the happiness among these ordinary children, the answer is yes. Waters believes that growing, smelling, and cooking good food makes children care about what they eat. 5
A. Keeping notes in this way is viewed as an essential part of experimental learning.
B. Lessons like this take place in the garden and kitchen and form part of the curriculum.
C. We couldn’t possibly produce enough food in this small space to feed all 300 children.

E. Just seeing a child saying to another, “Would you like some?” – that is the essential thing.
F. One lesson on European diets in the Middle Ages ends with children cooking roasted vegetables with herbs and garlic.
G. These two projects aim to provide 10,000 Berkeley public school students with good food while placing food at the heart of the curriculum.
Passage 4
My First Job
I still remember my first job very clearly when I was still in my high school. It was at a small local bakery in my hometown, a cosy place that always smelled of fresh bread. 1 Every morning, I'd wake up early, way before the sun, and head to the bakery to help prepare for the day ahead. It was a nice, simple way to start the workday.
My main task was to arrange the freshly baked bread and pastries (油酥面团) in the display cases. The bakery prided itself on the variety of its goods, from plain baguettes to chocolate croissants. 2 I also had to ensure that the bakery was clean and tidy at all times, which meant a lot of sweeping and wiping. 3 Sometimes, that meant working on the tills taking money from customers. Although the work could be tiring, and sometimes repetitive, I enjoyed it a lot.
The best part of the job was definitely the people I worked with. They were all so kind and friendly, always ready to lend a helping hand. 4 We often shared jokes and stories as we worked, which made the days pass quickly. The friendship made the long hours bearable.
Of course, not everything about the job was easy. There were times when we were very busy, especially during the holiday season. We had to deal with long queues of customers, all wanting their holiday treats. 5 Still, I learned a lot from the experience, about hard work, patience and the importance of a positive attitude.
Looking back, I can honestly say that my first job taught me many valuable lessons. It taught me the importance of hard work, punctuality, and teamwork. It was a great start to my working life, and the experiences I had and the skills I learnt have shaped the person I am today.

The lighthouse itself is over a hundred years old, and it's full of history. Many wild storms over the decades would have sunk many ships if the lighthouse hadn't been there warning them away.
Every day, I'm responsible for ensuring that the light shines brightly, warning ships away from the dangerous rocks. 2 The work can be hard, but it's very rewarding.
Living on a small island can be lonely, but I don't mind. I have the sea birds for company, and I enjoy the peace and quiet. I spend my days taking care of the lighthouse and my nights watching the stars. 3 It's a simple life, but a fulfilling one.
One of the biggest challenges of living here is the weather. It can be very unpredictable and sometimes quite extreme. But I've learned to adapt and be prepared for anything. 4 And despite the occasional storm, I wouldn't trade this life for anything. If I weren't here, I'd be sitting in a boring office doing a job to pay the bills. I know which I prefer!
Being a lighthouse keeper is not just a job, it's a way of life. It's hard work and it can be lonely, but the rewards are worth it. I get to live in a place of beauty and peace, and every day I have the satisfaction of knowing that I'm helping to keep sailors safe. 5

One of the most noticeable differences was my sleep. Without the glow of my screen keeping me awake, I found myself going to bed earlier and waking up more rested. 4 It was an unexpected, but welcome change.

Passage 4
What do we need to do to make classes more popular?
Encouraging young people to take up physical exercise is really important. 1 But reports out recently show that only half of girls who were questioned by researchers enjoy doing sport at school. 2 And the reasons? Because of their dislike of the clothes they are asked to wear and the lack of facilities to do their hair afterwards. As more girls than boys fail to take part in physical activity, this is seen as a problem that needs dealing with.
Many of the girls questioned said they disliked wearing the skirts that are often part of PE kits and that the kit should be more comfortable to wear. The girls wanted to have the chance to say what the PE kit should look like. They suggested clothing that covered more of their bodies, such as leggings and high necked shirts. 3
Another key issue the girls reported was not having the facilities available to do their hair after they have taken part in exercise. The girls being interviewed wanted private spaces where they could get changed. They also felt schools should supply hairdryers or somewhere they could plug their own one in so they can style their hair. 4 They could use this time to do their hair and make sure they looked the same as they did before the class. The researchers argue that since girls worry a great deal about how they look during their teenage years, it is important that schools take these issues seriously. 5 Some teachers feel sport should be a way of taking teenagers’ minds off how they look. It should help them see the value of keeping physically fit, enjoying team sports and perhaps achieving sporting success and not worrying about what their hair looks like.
A. And the teachers completely agree.
B. And a quarter of them actually avoid taking part.
C. Girls had the following problems with PE classes.
D. However, not everyone agrees with the suggestions.
E. PE classes are one way of getting young people to do this.

G. They also thought the materials used should be more comfortable to wear.

It started in the United States in the early 1980s. 1 Two friends, Hayes Noel and Charles Gaines, thought of using these guns for a survival game. This led to the first paintball game in New Hampshire in 1982. Paintball then spread around the world as millions of people discovered this fun activity
Paintball is a team game, where players try to hit each other with balls of paint. These paintballs are shot from a special gun. When a player is hit, they are 'out' of the game. 2 It's a fast game that requires quick thinking and good team work.

G. It started with guns used by farmers and foresters to mark trees and cattle.
Passage 2
Children today spend hours in front of the television playing video games. Video games were first introduced in the 1970s, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that they became very popular. 1 If we take a look at some of the games available, we will see that many of them have violence as the underlying theme. According to experts, these games allow children to be destructive without fear of being reprimanded. Recent psychological experiments have shown that playing these violent games can stimulate some degree of cruelty in children and adults. It increases aggressive behaviour. Another effect of the violence in these video games is that it can lead children to violence. 2
However, not everyone views video games negatively. Some people believe that it is better for a child to actively play video games rather than to passively watch television. 3 Some video games contain educational values. Some programmes are designed to allow children to explore different places or environments while others are developed to teach and drill specific facts or academic skills.
As a leisure activity, playing such games can be fun, challenging, exciting and it is also a part of a kid’s world. When children own a PC or a video game system, it creates opportunities for them to invite their friends to play, therefore enhancing or establishing friendships. 4 Thus, it is important for parents to draw the line. Instead, they should spend more time with their children by playing outdoor games or go for some leisure activities. Besides, parents should set the example of instilling in themselves the habit of reading. This will enable their children to be interested in reading. Moreover, they should not use video games as babysitters. 5 Parents and professionals should also seek creative ways to increase the acceptance, popularity and availability of games that are relatively pro-social, educational and fun.
In recent years, computer games have attracted much attention. There have been questions raised on whether computer games have had negative effects on children or whether society has overreacted. Thus, the potential effects should be looked into.
A. Some professionals claim that by playing video games, certain children can develop a sense of proficiency which they might not otherwise achieve.
B. It can give them the idea that violence is an acceptable way to deal with problems and conflict.
C. There have been questions raised on whether computer games have had negative effects on children or whether society has overreacted.
D. While playing video games is fun, it can be addictive.
E. This is because, as parents are busy these days, they expose their children to such video games to keep their children occupied.
F. A recent study shows that the two most preferred categories are games that involve martial arts and sports.
G. They can stay indoors watching television rather than hanging out with their friends outdoors.
Passage 3
For centuries, psychologists have been interested by the emotion “anger”. 1 . People usually think of anger as a negative emotion, but some of the traits (特性) reflect positive emotions. A new study led by Henk Aarts of Utrecht University in the Netherlands reveals that associating as object with anger actually motivates people to desire the object. Such behaviours are typically associated with positive emotions.
2 Positive emotions generally motivate people to target something. “People are motivated to do some or obtain a certain object in the world because it's rewarding for them. Usually this means that the object is positive and makes you happy,” says Aarts. His research team wanted to explore whether there is also a connection between anger as a negative emotion and the desire to get your hands on something.
In the first experiment, each participant watched a computer screen while images of common objects, like a mobile phone or a pen, appeared on the screen. Immediately before each object appeared, the screen flashed either a neutral face, an anger face, or a fearful face. 3 At the end of the experiment, the participants indicated how much they wanted each object. In a second experiment, the participants had to squeeze a handgrip to get the desired object — 4
Findings from the experiments confirm that people put more effort in action to obtain objects associated with anger faces, but not fearful ones. “This makes sense if you think about the evolution of human motivation”, says Aarts. For example, if there is limited food in the environment, people that associate food with anger and turn anger into an attack response to get the food, are more likely to survive. "if the food does not make you angry or doesn't produce aggression in your system, you may starve and lose the battle”, explains Aarts.“When you ask people why they work harder to get it, they say, ‘ 5 ’ ”adds Aarts. That demonstrates how little we know about our own motivation, he says.
A. It's just because I like it.
B. Anger is a common yet unusual emotion.
C. Anger is an emotion that expresses our dissatisfaction.
D. Those who squeezed (挤压) harder were more likely to win it.
E. This subliminal image (潜意识图)tied an emotion to each object.
F. This experiment is aimed to prove the importance of anger management.
G. Anger activates an area on the left side of the brain that is associated with many positive emotions.
Passage 4
Fast food advertising is big business. Every year, companies spent over 10 billion dollars on fast food advertising to entice children to consume their products. 1 and monopoly game pieces to tempt children to crave for their food and drinks that are usually high in fat, sugar, calories, salt and low in nutrients. Effectively, they use television advertisements to get children to pine for their products since many kids have televisions in their bedrooms.
On an average, children view over 40,000 commercials annually. 2 As it is almost impossible to curtail children from television viewing, businesses capitalise on this and spend money to promote their products to the children. They know that marketing to children will be more effective to improve sales. Moreover, children today have more purchases. They are the consumers of tomorrow.
This opens a whole new audience for marketers. Children today are very persuasive and are much more vocal than they used to be. They are not afraid to speak up, to kick and scream when they want something. 3 Fast food advertising to children is all about Pester Power. Pester Power consists of persistence nagging and importance nagging. 4 It leverages the guilt that comes with not being available enough for their kids. Therefore, instead of marketing to parents directly.
Besides television, viral marketing and the internet are other venues for fast food advertising to children. Internet marketers know that children love to click on links and are addicted to social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Many websites offer free ringtones and music downloads. 5 This leads to email marketing which is more cost-effective. Parents cannot stop fast food advertising to children, but they can control the television viewing time. Less time in front of the television could reduce the pestering for fast food. It is up to the parents to create a more nutritious and healthy family environment.
A. Advertisers call this as Pester Power.
B. They offer free stuff such as toys to attract children.
C. In order to get the freebie, an email address is required.
D. Besides, children love rare collectible toys from fast-food restaurants.
E. These companies used various tactics such as toys included with meals.
F. Most of these commercials are for candies, cereals, toys, and fast-food restaurants.
G. Marketers rely on importance nagging to persuade parents to provide for their children.

Passage 1
The Red Squirrel: A Lovely Sight In The UK
The red squirrel is a lovely sight in the UK. It has bright red fur, a big tail, and ear tufts (耳簇羽). It races around gardens or woodland, looking for new food or trying to remember where it hid something it found the last time. It is smaller than the grey squirrel, which you can also see a lot in the UK. 1
Red squirrels live in many parts of Europe and Asia, and there are a lot of them in the UK. They like living in woods, especially where there are pine trees. Pine trees give them their favourite food —seeds and cones
But, in a development that causes sadness in a lot of British people, the number of red squirrels in the UK has been getting lower for many years. This is mainly because of the grey squirrel, which was brought from North America in the 19th century. 3
Today, people are working hard to protect the red squirrel. They are looking after their living areas, teaching people about them, and sometimes, controlling the number of grey squirrels. 4 But, it is still not certain what will happen to the red squirrel in the UK and an animal which has long been part of history and literature may not survive.
The problems faced by the red squirrel show us a bigger issue: how people's actions can harm animals that lived here before us. As we move forward, it's important to think about how what we do can change nature. 5
A. They also eat many different things like nuts, fruits, and insects.
B. They are fun to watch when they move quickly up and down trees.
C. Losing their homes and getting sick has also made their numbers lower.
D. It is a reminder that we need to look after and save the world around us.
E. Making sure they have safe places to live is a very important part of saving them.
F. The different look the two species have shows how interesting and different the animals in the UK can be.
G. Sadly, grey squirrels, which are bigger and better at surviving, often take away food and space from red squirrels.
Passage 2
A Day In The Life Of A Zookeeper
In the heart of the bustling city, there lies a shelter for wildlife — the city zoo. This is where I work as a zookeeper, a job that is both rewarding and challenging. 1 Ever since I was a kid, I've always been fascinated by animals. Therefore, when the opportunity to work at the zoo presented itself, I jumped at the chance.
A typical day for me starts early, as animals don't follow human schedules. At the crack of dawn, I'm already at the zoo, ready to start my work. 2 It's crucial to check that all animals are well and none have fallen ill overnight.
Next, it's feeding time, one of the most demanding parts of my day. Each species has a specific diet, and it's my responsibility to ensure they get the nutrition they need. 3 This task requires careful planning and preparation.
Then it's time to clean the cages, which is quite the workout! Despite being a messy job, it's vital for the animals' health and wellbeing. 4 After cleaning, I set about improving the animals' environment with toys or puzzles to keep them stimulated.
One of the most rewarding parts of my job is the educational aspect. I often give talks to visitors about the animals and the importance of conservation. 5 It's so rewarding to see people leave with a better understanding and appreciation of wildlife.
Despite the hard work and early starts, I absolutely love my job. Each day brings something new and I continually learn more about these incredible creatures. Working as a zookeeper has given me a unique perspective on wildlife and I wouldn't trade it for anything.
A. No two days are the same, that's what makes it so exciting.
B. It's about more than just feeding animals and cleaning cages.
C. I have to admit that it can be a bit smelly, but you get used to it
D. There is something incredibly peaceful about the zoo in the early morning.
E. Their reactions and curiosity are a constant reminder of why I do what I do.
F. I've always had a love for animals, so it seemed like the perfect career for me.
G. I ensure that the diet is tailored to each animal's age, health status, and specific needs.
Passage 3
How to Save Petrol and the Environment
We all know how important it is to protect the environment. 1 For example, if you're a motorist jumping in the car to go somewhere is balanced against the knowledge of how harmful each journey can be. But did you know that making a few simple changes to your driving habits will not only do less damage to our world but will also save you money and could even be good for your health?
Do you really need to take the car? 2 If the service is reliable you'll soon get used to using buses and trains. In fact, for shorter journeys why not take the opportunity to get into shape and go on foot.
Why not share the journey! How often do you see cars with just one occupant with the driver making the same journey as others living nearby? Why not car share and half the cost of the journey? 3
Try changing your habits. When you must use the car plan your journey so you can go to all the places you need to visit rather taking the car out again and again. If you get caught in a traffic jam switch off the engine when you're stationary for a long time. Try not to brake too sharply or accelerate too quickly as this will lead to you using up more fuel. On cold mornings don't warm up the engine before you start your journey and when you next put fuel in your car think about whether you really need to fill up the tank. 4
Taking care of your car is very important. 5 And keep your car regularly serviced so that it runs as efficiently as possible.
Steps like this will save you money and help you do your bit to protect the environment.
A. Try making more use of public transport.
B. If your car is this old it may need replacing.
C. These problems mainly affect the city centres.
D. But sometimes it's difficult for us to do the right thing.
E. There are websites where people can arrange to meet up.
F. All that extra weight will put more pressure on the engine.
G. Make sure you carry out basic maintenance like checking the tyre pressure regularly.
Passage 4
The Threat to The Survival of Animals
Man has always been a threat to the survival of animals. In the last two hundred years, this process has accelerated. Population growth, industrial civilization and hunting are the main enemies of animals. Animals have been driven from their natural habitats for the sake of development.
Among the most tragically endangered species is the mountain gorilla. It is now one of the rarest animals in the world. Mountain gorillas live only in the dense tropical rainforest of the Virunga Volcanic region of central Africa. Although they live far away in the forest, they are not spared of the threat from human. 1
Birds have been flying the skies for centuries. Today a number of species of birds are slowly becoming extinct. Many of them have already extinct and many more are on the endangered list. Their reduction in number has been mainly due to the loss of habitat. Many wetlands, the home of several species of birds, are being converted to developed land for housing and industries. 2 Oil spills and the dumping of mineral waste are constantly contaminating the sea. Aquatic birds, while looking for food in these waters, find their feathers coated with grease and filth. This does not only make it difficult for them to fly but also prevents them from staying afloat in the water.
Fifty years ago, there were hundreds of thousands of elephants in Africa. 3 In the last ten years, they have taken the lives of approximately eighty thousand elephants in the vast continent. They are hunted for their tusks, which are priceless. For centuries, craftsmen have used ivory to make statues, jewellery, piano keys and other articles. These magnificent animals may one day become extinct if this unnecessary killing is not stopped.
Every year, about fifty thousand baby seals are slaughtered in the annual seal cull. 4 They have been killed brutally for the sake of their pelts which are made into coats, handbags and hats. Many people, concerned about the conservation of seals, have joined hands to protest these merciless killings. They are aware of the plight of these animals and are coming together to save the seals. These conscientious people have stopped using goods made of their skin or the fur of other animals. Prohibiting the hunting of rare animals alone is no longer sufficient to ensure their survival. We should allow them adequate natural habitats to live in. 5
A . Since then, the number of poachers has increased.
B. The decision to let them survive lies with us.
C. These animals are struggling to survive in the hand of man.
D. Pollution too has taken its toll on their population.
E. These people must change their attitudes towards animals.
F. Agricultural development and forestry have reduced their number greatly
G. These cute, shy animals are mostly clubbed to death or sometimes shot.

【答案】1.D 2.B 3.E 4.A 5.C
因此D项“It is ‘horrifying’ statistic, but what does this mean?”(这是一个“可怕的”统计数据,但这意味着什么?)
因此B项“The brain does not remember such short naps.”(大脑记不住这么短的小睡。)
因此E项“It is sleep that is more likely happen in a monotonous situation.”(这种睡眠更可能在单调的环境下发生。)
因此A项“Young drivers too are more at risk.”(年轻司机也面临更高风险。) 故选A。
因此C项“Caffeine will not kick in for at least 20 minutes.”(咖啡因至少需要20分钟才能起效。)
F. Using your imagination like this will make it easy to remember.
G. However, we don't often use this side to help us remember things.
【答案】1.G 2.E 3.C 4.F 5.A
这里的“do this”指代前文的“being creative”。 G项“However, we don't often use this side to help us remember things.”(然而,我们并不常用这一侧大脑来帮助记忆。)
E项“One method of doing this is to create a memory palace.”(做到这一点的一个方法是创建记忆宫殿。)——“doing this”指代“bringing the right side of the brain into use”,完美承上启下。
C项“Now imagine you have to remember something.”(现在想象你需要记住某样东西。)
F项“Using your imagination like this will make it easy to remember.”(像这样运用想象力会让记忆变得容易。)
故选A。
C. But we didn’t just walk around the town taking photographs.
D. On the other hand, the weather was better than we had expected.
E. That was followed by some fun boating on the river before we left.
F. In class the next day we presented the results of our questionnaires.
G. We worked in teams and created some questionnaires on different subjects.
G项“我们分组合作,制作了不同主题的问卷”符合语境,与下文“Some students did one on the environment, while another group...”
F项“第二天在课堂上我们展示了问卷的结果”符合逻辑,与上文“not only because we were able to speak to local people”形成递进,与下文“took it in turns to stand up and explain”直接对应。故选F。
D. The problem, according to some critics, is that such projects may be too expensive to run.
【答案】1.B 2.G 3.C 4.A 5.E
空处应是对这类课程性质的总结,因此E项“Lessons like this take place in the garden and kitchen and form part of the curriculum.(像这样的课程在菜园和厨房中进行,并成为课程的一部分)”符合语境,既承接了前文的具体活动,又引出了后文关于课时和食物用途的说明。
空处应具体说明这两个项目的目标,因此G项“These two projects aim to provide 10,000 Berkeley public school students with good food while placing food at the heart of the curriculum.(这两个项目旨在为伯克利公立学校的10,000名学生提供优质食物,同时将食物置于课程核心)”符合语境,其中“These two projects”与前文呼应,其内容也为后文的“set an example”提供了依据。
空处应解释为什么需要农场补充供应,因此C项“We couldn’t possibly produce enough food in this small space to feed all 300 children.(我们不可能在这个小空间里生产出足够300个孩子吃的食物)”符合语境,说明菜园产量不足,与后文的“附近农场也供应食物”形成因果关系。故选C。
4.【答案】A
空处应评价这种记录方式的意义,因此A项“Keeping notes in this way is viewed as an essential part of experimental learning.(以这种方式做笔记被视为体验式学习的重要部分)”符合语境,对前文的具体行为进行了总结和提升。故选A。
空处位于段尾,应提供一个具体的场景来印证这一理念,因此F项“Just seeing a child saying to another, ‘Would you like some?’ – that is the essential thing.(仅仅看到一个孩子对另一个孩子说‘你想来一点吗?’——那才是最重要的)”符合语境,用孩子之间分享食物的温暖画面作为文章的收束,且与Waters在原文结尾的原话一致。故选E。
A. It was hectic and demanding, but we managed.
B. However, I was always ready to help wherever I was needed.
C. I learned a lot from them and they made me feel part of the team.
D. My first day was a bit overwhelming, but I soon got the hang of it.
E. It was my responsibility to make sure they looked appealing to the customers.
F. The smell of freshly baked bread early in the morning is something I'll never forget.
G. I got the job when I was 15, looking for a part-time job during the summer holidays.
【答案】1.G 2.E 3.B 4.C 5.A
1. “I still remember my first job very clearly. It was at a small local bakery... a cosy place that always smelled of fresh bread.”
“looking for a part-time job during the summer holidays”也解释了为什么一个15岁的孩子会去面包店工作。
后文“Every morning, I'd wake up early...”
F项“The smell of freshly baked bread early in the morning is something I'll never forget”虽然优美,但更适合作为细节描写放在第二段或结尾回忆,不适合在第一段就打断“得到工作”的叙述顺序。
E项“让它们对顾客看起来有吸引力是我的责任”符合逻辑,与前文“my main task was to arrange”以及“prided itself on the variety”形成连贯的工作描述。故选E。
故选A。
Passage 1
My Life In A Lighthouse
I've always been attracted to the sea, so when I saw an advertisement for a lighthouse keeper, I knew I had to apply. The job was to maintain a lighthouse on a small island off the coast of Scotland. 1 To my surprise, they hired me, and soon I was on my way to my new home.
A. It's a responsibility I take very seriously.
B. The isolation can be difficult, but I'm never bored.
C. I don't have many neighbours, but I do have the whole sky.
D. But I'm always on call, ready to respond if there's a problem.
E. But in the end, it's the loneliness and the sea that keep me here.
F. Storms can come up suddenly, and I've learned to always have supplies ready.
G. I told them about my love for the sea and my experience with maintenance work.
【答案】1.B 2.G 3.D 4.E 5.A
为什么选A?A项中的“in the end”适合做全文总结。

Passage 3
The Last Chimney Sweep In Manchester
In the busy city of Manchester, one man stands out among the crowd — John Watson, the last chimney sweep. John didn't choose this career out of the blue. 1 He was taught by his father, who had been a chimney sweep for more than 40 years. Since he was a young boy, John spent his school holidays assisting his father, slowly mastering the craft.
A typical day for John begins very early in the morning. "You have to get up with the birds," he says with a smile. 2 He spends his day visiting homes and businesses across Manchester, ensuring their chimneys are clean and safe. "It's a physical job, but it keeps you fit," John comments.
One of the allowances of the job, according to John, is the sense of history and tradition. 3 It's a connection to the past that he values greatly. He also takes pride in the skill required to do his job well, ensuring that every chimney he works on is perfectly clean.
But being a chimney sweep is not all fun and games. The job can be tough and dirty. 4 There is also a certain amount of risk involved, as John often has to climb onto rooftops to access chimneys.
Yet despite the challenges, John has no plans to hang up his brushes anytime soon. He loves his work, and he hopes to continue for as long as he is able. After all, someone needs to keep Manchester's chimneys clean! 5
A. I feel like I'm a part of Manchester's rich industrial history.
B. Even in our modern age, there is a demand for his unique skills.
C. My father was a chimney sweep, and so was his father before him.

然后说:“John didn't choose this career out of the blue.”(他不是突然心血来潮选择这个职业的。)
后文“He was taught by his father, who had been a chimney sweep for more than 40 years. Since he was a young boy, John spent his school holidays assisting his father...”
A项“我觉得自己是曼彻斯特丰富工业历史的一部分”符合语境,具体化了“sense of history”,与后文“connection to the past”逻辑一致。故选A。
Passage 4
I Went One Week Without My Smartphone!
The idea to give up my smartphone for a week came to me after realising just how much time I was spending looking through social media feeds. I knew it was a bit too much, but when I found out I was on my phone for seven hours a day, that was it! I was curious to see how I would cope without it. 1
On the first day, I won't lie, it was tough. I found myself instinctively reaching for my phone, only to remember that I had decided not to use it. 2 But, as the day progressed, I found myself adjusting to this new reality.
With the absence of my phone, I had so much free time on my hands. I filled it with reading books, going for walks, and spending time with family. 3 These activities were so much more fulfilling than endless browsing.
One of the most noticeable differences was my sleep. Without the glow of my screen keeping me awake, I found myself going to bed earlier and waking up more rested. 4 It was an unexpected, but welcome change.
By the end of the week, I realised I wasn't missing much. Yes, I had missed a few messages and updates, but nothing that couldn't wait. 5 It had been a rewarding experiment.
Overall, going without a smartphone for a week was a challenging but educational experience. It made me realise how much time I was wasting on it, and I've since made a conscious effort to reduce my screen time. (256 words)
A. The feeling I had was one of panic.
B. Instead, I realised how much I had gained.
C. I was sceptical but excited to decide on this digital addiction.

My Journey To Music
As a child, I was always surrounded by music. My grandmother had been a famous opera singer many years before although I had never heard her singing myself. Growing up an only child was a unique experience for me. A lot of people think it must be lonely, but I never felt that way. 1 I was the only focus of my parents' attention, which had its pros and cons. 2 They always had time to help me with my homework or play games with me. However, it also meant I was under constant and careful examination. Whatever I was doing, whatever I was thinking of doing, there were two pairs of eyes on me at all times!
Another advantage of being an only child was that I had a lot of time for myself. I didn't have to share my toys or fight over the TV remote. 3 But at the same time, it also made me value friendship more since I didn't have siblings (兄弟姐妹) to play with at home. I built up a good strong group of friends that I am close to even today.
As an only child, I was often perceived as being spoilt. 4 This was a stereotype (固定、刻板的印象) I constantly had to fight against. But honestly, I was just like any other kid, my parents set boundaries and expected me to follow rules.
Finally, being an only child helped me to become independent at a young age. 5 This helped me a lot when I left home to go to university.

【答案】1.C 2.B 3.E 4.D 5.A
因此E项“Anger is an emotion that expresses our dissatisfaction.”(愤怒是一种表达不满的情绪。)
因此B项“Anger is a common yet unusual emotion.”(愤怒是一种常见却不寻常的情绪。)
因此E项“This subliminal image tied an emotion to each object.”(这个潜意识图像将一种情绪与每个物体联系起来。)
因此D项“Those who squeezed harder were more likely to win it.”(那些挤压得更用力的人更有可能赢得它。)
因此A项“It’s just because I like it.”(只是因为我喜欢它。) 故选A。
【答案】1.E 2.F 3.A 4.G 5.C
因此E项“These companies used various tactics such as toys included with meals.”(这些公司使用各种策略,例如随餐附赠玩具。)
因此F项“Most of these commercials are for candies, cereals, toys, and fast-food restaurants.”(这些商业广告大多针对糖果、谷物、玩具和快餐店。)
因此A项“Advertisers call this as Pester Power.”(广告商称这种现象为纠缠力。) 故选A。
因此G项“Marketers rely on importance nagging to persuade parents to provide for their children.”(营销人员依靠重要性纠缠来说服父母满足孩子的需求。)
因此C项“In order to get the freebie, an email address is required.”(为了获得免费赠品,需要提供电子邮件地址。)

【答案】1.F 2.A 3.G 4.E 5.D
1. 【答案】 F
【解析】第一段先描写红松鼠的外貌(红毛、大尾巴、耳簇羽)、行为,然后明确指出:“It is smaller than the grey squirrel, which you can also see a lot in the UK.”(它比灰松鼠小,灰松鼠在英国也很多见。)
2.【答案】 A
故选A。

【答案】1.D 2.A 3.E 4.F 5.G

故选A。
F项“所有那些额外的重量会给引擎带来更大压力”符合逻辑,解释了为什么不必加满油,与上文“whether you really need to fill up the tank”形成因果解释。故选F。
【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.G 5.B
C项“这些动物在人类手中艰难求生”符合语境,与上文“not spared of the threat from human”形成承接,概括了山地大猩猩的处境。故选C。
故选A。
B项“让它们生存下去的决定权在我们手中”与“We should allow them adequate natural habitats to live in”直接呼应,并升华主题。故选B。
