W: Excuse me, I’m having some trouble with the ATM. It has my bank card and won’t give it back.
M: OK. I’ll call the manager. He can help you with that. Please return to the machine that has your card. He will join you in a few minutes.
Text 2
M: Sue, I’ve just been told the date of the play has been changed from the 15th to the 16th.
W: Are you serious? Yesterday I was told it was going to be the 17th.
M: The 17th is a Sunday, so they changed it to a Saturday in the end.
Text 3
W: Have you ever been to a place like this?
M: No, but I do like to look at the stars.
W: Good, you’re in for a treat. This is the best place around to get a good look at the stars. I’m going to fetch the telescope for you. It’s in my car.
Text 4
M: I’m so sad. I don’t know anyone here and I’m homesick. But don’t tell my mum and dad. They might be worried.
W: Oh, I won’t. They’d probably take the next flight to New York and come to see you if I do that.
Text 5
W: Have you seen the new books that they got for the science class? They are much better than the new math books.
M: Yes, I have. But I actually don’t like them. Why do they talk so much about old scientists?
W: That’s what I like the most about them.
Text 6
W: Our manager said that you and your wife like watching movies. Would you like to see one this weekend?
M: Yes, I was thinking of checking out the Sunday movies. They are playing Mary Poppins there this weekend. You see, I’m a real big fan of classical movies.
W: Oh, that’s perfect. I got these two free tickets that you can use at that theater. My brother gave them to me.
M: Really? That’s very nice of you.
Text 7
W: Jack, close the window in the bathroom. The wind’s getting really strong.
M: Done. We seem to have experienced a whole year’s weather in one day today.
W: I couldn’t agree more — this morning I could hardly see across the road because of the thick dark clouds.
M: Yeah, but at lunchtime I sat in the park enjoying the sunshine. Then on the way home from work, I got caught in the rain and was wet to the skin. I felt so cold.
W: And now we’ve got this. England in April — how changeable!
Text 8
M: What are you reading, Jennifer?
W: I’m reading an event about paper cutting. The woman named Abigail has been a creative papercut artist for many years. She wants to hold an event in our city.
M: Where will it take place?
W: At the cafe on the Square, Barnoldswick. And it’ll begin at 1:30 pm and end at 2:30 pm on July 21. She’ll share basic paper cutting skills and techniques. And then participants will have the opportunity to have a go themselves on practice sheets.
M: So do you want to go?
W: Yes. I’ve always been interested in paper cutting. And I want to teach my students after I learn how to do it. Now I finally have an opportunity, so I’ll definitely go. Will you join me?
M: Sorry, Jennifer, but I’d rather watch a football game that day.
Text 9
M: Honey, what’s all our stuff doing in the yard?
W: It’s a clean-up sale. For only $19.95, we can put a two-line ad in Newsday for seven days. And with over two million readers, we’ll get results fast.
M: But if Newsday is having a clean-up sale, why does our yard look like a market?
W: Because there’s never been a better time for us to turn the things we don’t use into cash we can use.
M: You mean the jewelry, furniture and exercise equipment?
W: Even your old guitar.
M: Two lines, seven days, for only $19.95. Are you sure?
W: Of course I’m sure. I called Bob.
M: Who’s Bob?
W: He’s a sales consultant there. He was really nice and helpful. He told me to call him whenever I had a problem with the ad.
M: More than 50% off, and friendly service. Newsday does have all we need.
W: Yeah. So could you help me with the ad if you’re free?
M: OK.
Text 10
W: Do you enjoy watching comedies? Then why not come and see what’s happening at Comedy Hour?
Comedy Hour owns comedy clubs in several countries that are run just for people aged 13–20. They’re just as familiar with working in adult comedy clubs as they are working with children.
The Comedy Hour company was set up by John Winterson. In fact, his act quickly became so popular that he soon found lots of other comedians who wanted to join his company.
If you’re having a party at home, Comedy Hour can come and perform for you there at the party. Your very own comedian will also help you to tell your guests some jokes and silly stories and they can join in, too, if they want. It’ll be fun and very different from any party you’ve ever had before.
Here at Comedy Hour, it’s not just about the adults telling jokes. We also offer young people the chance to perform. But we’ve yet to find someone who can do that without preparation, so we’ve set up the world’s first Comedy Classes to teach young people how to tell jokes on stage. At the moment our classes are only monthly, but we’re planning to start a number of others over the coming year.
So what are you waiting for? Come and join Comedy Hour.

Text 10
W: John Richard Hefner was born on June 15, 1946, in Montana. As a young boy, John was shy and struggled with
reading and writing, which made him an easy target for his classmates in grade school. He recalled, “Everybody called me stupid because I was slow in reading and writing. Everything was really hard...” But his mother’s support helped him gain confidence and win awards for his science fair projects.
In 1965, John dropped out of the University of Montana due to poor academic performance. Later he joined the army. After serving for two years and four months, he returned to school, but he dropped out again in 1972. However, John didn’t give up his dream job. He applied to various museums, eventually landing a technician position at Princeton University’s Natural History Museum. His devotion and expertise soon earned him promotions to research assistant and project manager.

Text 17, 18, 19, 20
W: Well, thank you everyone for your interest in our Pyrenean Charity Challenge. So, what are you signing up for? We’ll walk from Wednesday to Friday through the beautiful scenery of the Spanish Pyrenees. The route will take us through a variety of landscapes: first we’ll follow an amazing path along the coast. Then we’ll head away from the coast and walk through hills and forest. We will walk about 15 kilometers per day. It should take us about six to seven hours. Each day’s walking will start from one hotel and finish at the next hotel on the route. We’ll walk at a leisurely speed, so this challenge is no problem if you’re a fit and active person. Previous experience is useful, but it’s not absolutely necessary. We will have an experienced leader who’s fully trained and knows the route.
What will you need to take? The most important item you’ll need is good walking boots. You should buy them in advance to make sure they fit well. You’ll need a waterproof jacket to keep you dry and warm and walking shorts are a good idea. You will also need a small backpack to carry your lunch and a water bottle.

M: Hey, are you a native of Santiago?
W: Yes. I often come here for the fresh air during weekends. Are you touring around the place?
M: Actually, I came here for a business meeting. But our partner’s flight has been delayed and the meeting has been put off. So I decided to look around here first.
W: Santiago is near both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean. Maybe you can spare a day for sightseeing after your meeting.
M: Good idea. It must be relaxing.
W: Wish you a happy time here.
M: Thank you. Bye.

M: Monica, you mentioned a short stay on a peaceful farm.
W: Yes, Henry. We played games in the morning and we fed animals and rode horses on the farm in the afternoon.
M: Riding a horse? It must be very dangerous.
W: Not really. I had a great time with my friends. Have you ever tried horse riding?
M: Actually, I tried but gave up the idea completely later. At age eight, I accidentally fell off a horse on my grandparents' farm and seriously hurt my legs. Since then I have had a fear of riding a horse.
W: Sorry to hear that. Are your legs OK now? Maybe we can try it together next time.
M: Yeah. Twelve weeks have passed and I have completely recovered. I guess I can try it someday.

W: How are your preparations for the exams going, Oliver?
M: Not bad. I'm confident in my math but worried about my history. What about you, Lisa?
W: I find history a little challenging too because of too much memorization of details. However, I am worried about my English most.
M: Don't worry. I can practice speaking English with you after class.
W: Thanks. But reading comprehension is the main problem for me.
M: I suggest reading English news every day. Listen to the news first, then read the text for thorough comprehension, and at last read it aloud to strengthen your understanding.
W: I'd like to have a try. Could you recommend some English news apps to me?
M: I used to listen to VOA Learning English and BBC News a lot.
W: Got it. It's kind of you to give me such detailed advice.

W: Hey, Daniel. You look upset. What happened?
M: I was playing football and suddenly some players in the team laughed at me and finally I found I'd got my T-shirt on back to front.
W: It's no big deal. I remember I once applied for a scholarship and I put all my efforts into it. But it turned out that I failed to send the email before the deadline.
M: Sorry to hear that. How do you usually gain control of your emotions?
W: I tend to deal with them on my own.
M: What are your ways?
W: I try different ways. The first is to breathe deeply when I feel stressed. It can help me calm down. I also create my own joy box and fill it with happy memories, such as a ticket to a concert or inspirational quotes I enjoy. What’s more, I find reading books can refresh me too. Last but not least, I also work out in the gym.
M: Wow, I like the idea of creating a joy box. I’ll try that later.

W: Hello, everyone. Here is a piece of news about the Greenland ice sheet. Usually, what’s happening in the ground under an ice sheet plays a key role in deciding the ice flow. As the ground of Greenland is covered with ice around 2.5 kilometers thick, it’s difficult to know what is happening deep underground. In 2009, a number of stations were built across Greenland to study the ice flow. However, the stations offered little information. Recently, a new study made an important discovery. The researchers are able to map out what is happening deep down by measuring waves from earthquakes. These waves travel along the Earth’s surface. By measuring the speed, shape and duration of the waves, researchers are able to work out what material they are travelling through. The high-resolution images of the rocks underneath the ice sheet help identify which areas are most likely to have faster ice flow. It will give us a better understanding of the processes that contribute to increased ice flowing into the ocean and the sea level rise. That’s all for today’s program. Thanks for listening.

M: Hi, welcome to Royal Stationery. How may I help you?
W: Well, I was wondering if you could help me find something. I have to mail some photographs, so I need some large envelopes that won’t bend.
M: Yeah, we do. It’s on the 3rd floor, right by the art supplies. Let me show you. Follow me, please.
W: Oh, great. And do you know if there’s a post office nearby? I need to send the photos today.
M: Actually, we offer shipping services here.
W: That’s perfect. By the way, how can I track my order then?
M: I’ll give you a track number, and you can check it online.

W: Good morning, Jack. Can you photocopy these reports for me, please? I need them for the staff meeting tomorrow morning.
M: Hi, Grace. Unfortunately, the copy machine is out of order. The repairman is supposed to be coming this afternoon to look after it, but this is the second time it has broken down in the past two weeks so it may not be fixable.
W: Oh, man! Would you be able to run to our office in Marple? It is only a ten-minute drive. I just need to make sure I am prepared for this meeting.
M: Yeah, I can do that. I actually did my training at the Marple office, so I am familiar with it. I can leave right now.

W: Hello. I’d like an update on the Mondvale Hotel job. Are we still on schedule to begin on Monday?
M: No, I’m afraid that there has been some delay in getting the decoration materials. It looks like we may be held up until Wednesday. Oh, I forgot it. Richard just got off the phone with the supplier. It looks like everything will arrive on Monday afternoon, so we could actually begin the job on Tuesday.
W: That’s good news. I’ll call the client this morning and let them know.
M: You should also remind them that we will begin working on the guest rooms first and work our way toward the hall and first-floor reception areas last. We’ll send a large crew so the work can be finished quickly.
W: How long do you think it will take to complete the job?
M: We can probably be finished on Friday, as we originally planned.
W: Excellent. They’re a new client with several locations in our city, so I want things to go smoothly. I’m sure there will be more work with them in the long run if all goes well.

W: Hi! My name’s Britt Foxton, and I’m the founder of a website devoted to women’s basketball, and I’ve also just written a book on the same subject.
But first up, let me tell you how I got started with the site. Although it really got going once I was at university, it actually started out as a high-school project, you know, a “design a website” kind of thing. But it wasn’t like anyone expected it to become real or anything. I designed a site about girls’ basketball, which I was passionate about, and called it femalebasket.com. I knew the name wasn’t right, and before it got really successful, I changed it to matchgirl.com and that was a really good move.
And although it started with basketball, the site’s grown to include other games as well. It features a variety of articles and reviews on everything ranging from basketball to computer games, plus some more traditionally “girly” material as well. But the coverage of team sports is at the heart of it, anything about make-up or fashion is just secondary to that.
