Here is a piece of news about the Greenland ice sheet. Usually, what’s happening in the ground under an ice sheet plays a key role in deciding the ice flow. As the ground of Greenland is covered with ice around 2.5 kilometers thick, it’s difficult to know what is happening deep underground. In 2009, a number of stations were built across Greenland to study the ice flow. However, the stations offered little information. Recently, a new study made an important discovery. The researchers are able to map out what is happening deep down by measuring waves from earthquakes. These waves travel along the Earth’s surface. By measuring the speed, shape and duration of the waves, researchers are able to work out what material they are travelling through. The high-resolution images of the rocks underneath the ice sheet help identify which areas are most likely to have faster ice flow.
