Jerry is a world-famous mountain climber. He has climbed many high mountains in the world so far. Starting in 2015, he and his friends spent two years on an adventure (探险) in South America, covering 7,800 miles. He was even named Adventurer of the Year by a famous geography magazine in 2018.
Although Jerry achieved great success, he didn’t feel fulfilled. He asked himself, “Is it enough to climb high mountains? Am I doing something helpful? How can I turn my adventures into something that can help the world?”
Jerry has learned that scientists need plants, rocks and water samples (样本) from the places far away to do research. But scientists can’t get there themselves as such places are hard to reach—only the bravest adventurers can make it. Jerry thought he could do something to help. He then came up with an idea. He set up a team of top adventurers to collect samples for scientists. By studying the samples, scientists could know more about the earth and find ways to protect it.
Recently, Jerry and his friends have discovered a special plant on Mount Qomolangma. The samples they have brought back help scientists know how plants live in extreme (极端的) conditions. For Jerry, this kind of adventure is most satisfying. “Such adventures have made us see life in a different way. Now, being the best climber isn’t important for me. Passage 9
As a child, I believed all people had hidden magic inside them. Inspired by stories like The Sword in the Stone, I searched for my own power. I studied astrology (占星术) and personality tests, hoping to understand myself better. But none of them truly fit me.
At the same time, I fell in love with music. Playing in orchestras felt like magic—creating something beautiful together was thrilling. But as I trained at a top music school and played professionally, the joy faded. Teachers, conductors, and audiences always criticized. The pressure for perfection crushed my wonder.
I realized no outside system—whether mystical or musical—could give me real power. True magic wasn’t about escaping judgement but learning to trust myself. Yet, I became my own worst enemy. My self-criticism was harsher than anything others said. I spiralled into negativity, never feeling good enough. I grew insecure and lonely. My relationships fell apart— painful breakups, a divorce, struggles at work. I hit rock bottom.
But that’s when everything changed. I decided to believe I could be whole. Instead of looking outside for answers, I turned to myself. It was scary—no rules, no approval—just me, learning to trust myself again. I imagined what it would feel like to be enough. I practised self-kindness and slowly, the self-hate faded. My confidence grew. For the first time, I felt real magic—not from books or music, but from myself.
Now I know my true power: helping others find their own light. Magic is never about perfection. It is always inside me— waiting to be found.
1. Why did the author study astrology as a child?
A.To find her own special magic.
B.To learn how to use magic like others.

C.No money. D.Poor teaching methods.
3. Which of the following can take the place of the underlined words “spiralled into” in Paragraph 3?
A.Gave up. B.Played against. C.Fell into. D.Put out.
4. How did the author regain confidence?
A.By seeking fame. B.By practising self-kindness.
C.By talking with others. D.By changing careers.
5. What is the best title of the text?
A.Magic Is Unreal B.Success Needs Effort
C.True Power Is from Oneself D.Music Brings Happiness
【答案】1. A 2. A 3. C 4. B 5. C
【导语】作者讲述了自己从向外追寻力量,到向内觉醒,最终找到真正自我力量的成长历程。
1. 第一段“As a child, I believed all people had hidden magic inside them. ...hoping to understand myself better”提到作者小时候相信人都有隐藏的魔力,受故事启发去寻找自己的力量,因此学习占星术是为了找到自己的特殊魔法,对应A选项。

3. 划线短语所在句“I spiralled into negativity, never feeling good enough”描述作者陷入负面情绪,一直觉得自己不够好,所以推断spiralled into在这里是“陷入”的意思,和fell into含义一致,对应C选项。
4. 第四段“I practised self-kindness and slowly, the self-hate faded. My confidence grew. For the first time, I felt real magic—not from books or music, but from myself.”提到作者是通过练习自我友善重获信心,对应B选项。

Saturday was Lucy’s favourite day of the week. That was the day she got to visit her grandparents’ farm. Lucy loved to play there and help choose vegetables for lunch.
But there was one thing that Lucy didn’t like—the henhouse. Lucy always ran past it as fast as she could. The hens pecked (啄) at the ground with their sharp beaks (尖利的喙). Their small, yellow eyes were always looking for food. Lucy was afraid they would bite her.
After lunch one Saturday, Grandpa said, “Will you please help me feed the hens, Lucy? I’m busy today.”
Lucy wanted to say no, but Grandpa had already handed her a bag of cracked corn (碎玉米). “This is their favourite snack,” he said with a smile.
Lucy walked slowly to the henhouse. The hens rushed to the door as they saw her. They were excited about the food. Lucy stood outside the henhouse and began to cry. She was too scared to open the door.
Grandpa heard Lucy crying and came over. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I don’t want the hens to bite me!” Lucy cried.
“Oh, Lucy,” Grandpa laughed kindly. “Didn’t you hear the saying that something is as rare as hen’s teeth? That means it almost never happens—because hens have no teeth at all! They can’t bite you even if they want to.”
Lucy looked at the hens. Now they just seemed funny, not scary at all. She smiled and opened the door to feed them.

What matters is doing something helpful while climbing mountains. There is still much more we can do,” Jerry said to a reporter.

Passage 10
