But then I looked at my phone and saw on the news that a hurricane was coming. I asked my dad what a hurricane is and asked him if he knew what to do. He told me not to worry because a hurricane is just a big storm. We stayed in our hotel room and by the afternoon, there was even more rain. And the winds were getting stronger and stronger.
In the evening, a hotel worker asked all the visitors to go to the dining hall. When we were all inside, we put tables in front of the doors and then we got down on the floor together in the corner. Claude and Louise are “giraffes”, so are police officers Hankins and Pearson. These men and women don’t look like giraffes. They look like you and me. Then why do people call them “giraffes”?
A giraffe is an animal that sticks(伸出) its long neck out, can see places far away and has a large heart. In the same way, a “giraffe” can be a person who likes to “stick his or her neck out” for other people, always watches for future happenings and has a warm heart for people around. “The Giraffe Project” is a 10-year-old group which finds and honors(表彰) “giraffes” in the US and in the world. The group wants to teach people to do something to build a better world. The group members try to tell people to “stick their necks out” and help others.
Claude and Louise were getting old and they left their work with some money that they saved for future use. One day, however, they saw a homeless man looking for a place to keep warm and they decided that they should “stick their necks out” and give him some help. Today, they live in Friends’ House, where they invite twelve homeless people to stay every night.
Police officers Hankins and Pearson work in a large city. They see crimes every day and their work is sometimes dangerous. They work hard for their money. However, these two men put their savings together and even borrowed money to start an education center to teach young people in a poor part of the city. Hankins and Pearson are certainly “giraffes”.

C. Honor “giraffes” around the world. D. Teach people to feed giraffes.

A. They were too rich to work. B. They looked for a place to live.
C. They supported people without homes. D. They bought a very large house.
34. Why do people call Hankins and Pearson “giraffes”?
A. Because they carry out some dangerous work.
B. Because they work hard and save a lot of money.

D. Because they set up a learning center for youth.
35.Which of the following best shows the structure of this passage?

Have you noticed such a scene: Fish often travel in schools(成群结队). With perfect timing, they bend and break together. Scientists have long wondered why schooling is so common.
A new study has compared the energy a fish uses as it swims. “Moving in a school reduced the energy a fish used by more than half,” says George Lauder.
Lauder and schoolmate Yangfan Zhang worked with giant danio(大鲖). These small fish love to swim in schools.
Sometimes the team put eight at a time into a water tank shaped like a racetrack(跑道). Other times, they just put in a single fish. The danio didn’t loop around(循环)the tank like race cars. Instead, the danio swam in one spot, like a runner on a treadmill(跑步机), When they “ran” together, a motor pushed the tank’s water around. This created a current(水流).
As the fish swam, a special device measured how much oxygen(氧气)they used. As we all know, people who run a short distance very fast use a lot of oxygen. They usually need some time to recover. Here, the researchers used oxygen as a standard of how much energy the fish used to swim.
To make them swim fast, the researchers increased the speed of the water current. When they slowed the water down, the fish slowed down, too.
Schooling fish used less oxygen than when they swam alone. And, they took less time to
recover. In other words, they had an easier time “catching their breath” after schooling.
By schooling. fish can save their energy for other important things, says Frank, who works
at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. For example, if fish are young, they can put that energy into growth. As adults, they can use it to produce young or to avoid being caught by their enemies.
36. How does the writer organize the text?
A. By telling a story and explaining a rule.
B. By introducing a tool and describing its use.
C. By describing a scene and presenting a study.
D. By finding the similarity between two objects.
37. Why do fish travel in schools according to George’s research?
A. Because it is perfect timing. B. Because it reduces energy.
C. Because schooling is common. D. Because it’s easy for them to bend and break.
38. How did the researchers control the speed of fish?
A. They increased the water current. B. They controlled the oxygen.
C. They controlled the speed of water. D. They slowed water down.
39. Compared with schooling fish, a single fish .
A. may use less oxygen
B. may take less time to recover
C. may have an easier time to catch the breath

Protecting the environment is everyone’s duty. With the development of society, environmental problems are becoming more and more serious, such as air pollution, water pollution and waste pollution. 41 It’s time for us to take action to protect our home.
There are many simple ways we can do in our daily life to protect the environment. 42 For example, we can bring our own shopping bags when going shopping instead of using plastic bags. This can reduce the amount of white pollution.
Saving water is another important way to protect the environment. We often waste water without noticing it. 43 We can also reuse water, like using the water from washing vegetables to water flowers.
Besides, saving energy is necessary for environmental protection. 44 Turning off the lights when we leave a room and using energy-saving bulbs can help save a lot of electricity. Walking or riding a bike instead of driving a car is also a good choice.
Protecting the environment is not a difficult task. 45 If everyone does a little, our world will become much more beautiful.

Have you noticed such a scene:Fish often travel in schools(成群结队).ith perfect
timing, they bend and break together.Scientists have long wondered why schooling is so
common.
A new study has compared the energy a fish uses as it swims."Moving in a school
reduced the energy a fish used by more than half,"says George Lauder.
九年级英语学情调研(第5页,共11页)
Lauder and schoolmate Yangfan Zhang worked with giant danio ()These small fish
love to swim in schools.
Sometimes the team put eight at a time into a water tank shaped like a racetrack ()
Other times, they just put in a single fish. The danio didn't loop around()the tank like race
cars.Instead,the danio swam in one spot,like a runner on a treadmill(跑步机),When they
"ran"together,a motor pushed the tank's water around.This created a current ()
As the fish swam,a special device measured how much oxygen (they used.As we
all know, people who run a short distance very fast use a lot of oxygen. They usually need
some time to recover. Here, the researchers used oxygen as a standard of how much energy the
fish used to swim.
To make them swim fast, the researchers increased the speed of the water current. When
they slowed the water down, the fish slowed down, too.
Schooling fish used less oxygen than when they swam alone. And,they took less time to
recover. In other words, they had an easier time"catching their breath"after schooling
By schooling.fish can save their energy for other important things, says Frank, who works
at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. For example,if fish are young, they can put that
energy into growth. As adults, they can use it to produce young or to avoid being caught by
their enemies.
36.How does the writer organize the text?
A.By telling a story and explaining a rule.
B.By introducing a tool and describing its use.
C.By describing a scene and presenting a study.
D.By finding the similarity between two objects.
37.Why do fish travel in schools according to George's research?
A.Because it is perfect timing.
B.Because it reduces energy.
C.Because schooling is common.
D.Because it's easy for them to bend and break.
38.How did the researchers control the speed of fish?
A.They increased the water current.B.They controlled the oxygen
C.They controlled the speed of water.D.They slowed water down.
39.Compared with schooling fish,a single fish.
A.may use less oxygen
B.may take less time to recover
C.may have an easier time to catch the breath
D.may use more oxygen

作文范文:
Stay Positive and Be a Sunny Teenager
Hello everyone! I’m Li Hua, a ninth-grader. It’s my great honor to share my experiences here. As teenagers, we all face various problems, but the key is how to deal with them.
Last year, I suffered from serious academic pressure. With the final examination coming, I often stayed up late studying, yet my grades didn’t improve. I felt nervous and even lost sleep. To solve this, I made a detailed study plan and stuck to it. I also started running every morning to relax. Meanwhile, I asked my teachers for advice, which helped me study more efficiently. Gradually, I regained confidence and my grades improved.
Another problem for me was serious peer relationships. I used to compare myself with others and felt upset about my appearance and abilities. Later, I realized that everyone is unique. I joined a reading club where I made friends who shared my interests. This made me more confident and accept myself as I am.
From these experiences, I’ve learned that facing problems bravely is the first step. Don’t ask for help from parents or teachers. Also, find healthy ways to relieve stress, like sports or hobbies. Believe in yourself and keep a positive attitude. Let’s all try to be sunny teenagers!

Henry is a fourteen- year- old boy. In 2025, Henry joined a charity trip in India. The goal was to raise money to help people in need. About 30 teams took part, and each team drove an old car across the east of India. Henry was very excited because it was his first time taking part in this kind of event.
He used the website to share his experience and collect donations. Every day he posted photos and happy moments from the trip. At night, he checked the website to see the progress. At the end of the trip, his team raised about 14,000 dollars.
The trip was very special. They drove for many hours every day and visited many beautiful places. One day, their car broke down, but a kind local man helped them fix it. They were very thankful. They also played football with some local children during a break in the journey. The children were very kind.
This trip made a big difference for Henry. He learned a lot about teamwork and different cultures. Henry is happy that the money they raised helped poor people in India.
