Once upon a time, in a faraway jungle (丛林), there lived a monkey and an elephant. They were good friends and did almost everything together.
But one day, the two had a sharp disagreement. The monkey argued that being fast and agile (敏捷的) was key to success. The elephant disagreed. He believed that strength mattered much more. Then they turned to the wise owl of the jungle for help.
After listening patiently, the owl pointed to a shiny fruit on the top of a tall tree across the river. “Bring me that fruit,” he said. “And then I’ll answer your question.”
The elephant and the monkey set off. When the two reached the river, the monkey froze—it was too deep and too wide for him to cross. The elephant, however, rushed forward and easily got to the tree. But when he tried to reach the fruit, he found it was too high. He pushed, pulled and even shook the big tree with all his strength, but the fruit wouldn’t budge an inch (寸). The elephant had no choice but to return to the riverbank, where the monkey was waiting.
Once again, the elephant told the monkey to jump on his back. Together, they crossed the river safely. Once they reached the tree, the monkey climbed it and picked the fruit. Then they made their way back.
The owl asked, “Of the two of you, which one brought the fruit to me?” The monkey proudly said, “I did! I climbed the tree and picked it.” The elephant argued, “No, I did! Without me, he couldn’t have even crossed the river!”
The owl smiled and stopped the argument. “You’re both wrong,” he said. “Neither of you could have gotten the fruit alone. It was teamwork that made it possible—your speed and agility, and your strength, working together. ________ That’s the real key to success.”

Love you, laoji is a catchphrase now. Literally, “laoji” means “the old self”. Although calling ourselves this way is a bit funny, it makes us feel warm at heart. It is like talking to a good old friend — relaxed and caring.
To ring in the New Year, here are some tips for you to love laoji more in the coming year.
Don’t Chase Perfection. Waiting to be perfect often means never starting. Many people put things off because they’re afraid of making mistakes. But doing something imperfect is better than doing nothing at all. Start small. Learn as you go. The first step matters most.
Take Real Rest. Real rest isn’t sleeping all day or staying up late on your phone. That only makes you more tired. Try active rest — gentle activities that help your body and mind recover. Feel the sunshine, go for a walk, stretch a little, or listen to music you like. Choose one or two small things each day to recharge (充电).
Talk to Yourself Kindly. Pay attention to how you talk to yourself. When things go wrong, don’t be too hard on laoji. Try saying, “It’s okay,” or “I’ll try again next time.” Treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend.
Comments:
Alissa: Me reading this at 1-a.m. while still scrolling… okay fine, I’ll go to bed. Love you, laoji.
Bryan: Talking to yourself in the third person really helps. In psychology (心理学), it’s called self-distancing. It means stepping back a little and not getting stuck in your feelings. It’s useful especially during stressful times.
Lora: Didn’t expect a phrase like this to hit so hard. Gonna try being nicer to laoji this year.
19. According to the passage, which of the following is active rest?
A. Working at a desk for long hours. B. Sleeping all day.
C. Staying up late scrolling on the phone. D. Taking a walk outdoors.
20. What does Bryan mainly want to tell us?
A. It’s OK to avoid stressful situations. B. The third-person talk helps manage feelings.
C. Psychology terms are not hard to understand. D. Everyone should learn a little psychology.
21. Which of the following actions are recommended (推荐) for students like you?
① Xiaoming wants to start a project but worries it won’t be perfect, so he begins with a small step anyway.
② Anna gives up on difficult homework because it makes her feel stressed.
③ Tom fails a test and tells himself, “It’s okay. I’ll try again next time.”
④ Jerry studies psychology terms to control his feelings.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ②④ D. ①③
22. What is the writer’s attitude towards the phrase “Love you, laoji”?
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Humorous. D. Supportive.
D
Which country is the happiest? Maybe you have your own answer. On March 20, the UN World Happiness Report made a list about this, after studying things like GDP, social support and life expectancy (预期寿命). Finland was once again the world’s happiest country for the eighth year in a row.
Finland tops the list for many reasons. First, it is well-known for its strong social support. The government and companies in Finland offer people great support for health, education and many other things. Also, people share this support fairly, as explained by Ilana Ron-Levey, a social science researcher.
People in Finland also trust each other. The government shares information honestly, which helps people trust their neighbors and the government, according to Business Finland. John Helliwell, an editor of the World Happiness Report noticed that people in northern European countries return the most lost wallets. “Those are individuals (个人的) caring about the people with whom they live.”
What’s more, being close to nature makes them happy. In Finland, people never take a more than 10-minute walk from a park or forest. This greatly improves people’s well-being and even creativity, as reported by Business Finland. Emma Seppala, a Yale lecturer studying in the science of happiness, found that when people stay away from electronic devices, their brains become more active in finding new ways to solve problems. “For people living in Finland, that is what the forest offers,” she told Business Finland.
23. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
24. Why do Finnish people trust each other?
A. Because of the well-run government and caring people.
B. Because of their kind northern European neighbors.
C. Because of their healthy development of business.
D. Because of their rich and happy lifestyles.
25. According to Emma Seppala, what makes Finnish people happier?
A. Their electronic devices are cheaper. B. They love to solve problems.
C. Parks or forests are always close by. D. They are encouraged to be creative.
26. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Do you have a smartphone? Are you allowed to use your phone freely? How well do you think you could live without it for three weeks? In England, 26 students at a school tried this challenge. They took part in an experiment to find out what life is like when a phone is not around.
The volunteers were all 8th graders from a school. They agreed to lock their phones in a box for three weeks. Researchers from the University of York watched their daily life during this time. The experiment was filmed for a TV documentary to help the students give up their phones. Professor Henderson from the university said this experiment was special because it let students go without smartphones for a longer time than other tests.
After three weeks, the researchers found many good changes for the students. They went to bed 50 minutes earlier and fell asleep 20 minutes faster each night — this helped with their mood, focus and health. Their sleep was tracked with special devices. The students felt less worried and less sad, and they spent more time with family and friends. Teachers also noticed the students were more active in class. The study only saw a small rise in the students’ working memory, and their long-term focus did not get better. But the researchers thought three weeks might be too short to see big changes in these skills.
Overall, the study showed that no smartphones may have a good effect on sleep and mood for students under 14 years old. It tells us that taking a break from phones can bring real advantages to young people.

B
15. What does the underlined word “budge” mean in Paragraph 4?
A. Move. B. Break. C. Grow. D. Fall.
16. How did the monkey cross the river finally?
A. B. C. D.
17. Which is the right order of the story?
a. The owl asked for the shiny fruit.
b. The owl showed teamwork matters.
c. The monkey climbed to pick the fruit.
d. The elephant carried the monkey across the river.
e. The elephant and the monkey argued about the key to success.
A. e→a→d→c→b B. e→a→b→c→d C. a→e→d→c→b D. a→e→c→d→b
18. Which saying can be put in ________?
A. The early bird catches the worm. B. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. Teamwork makes the dream work.

【导语】本文主要讲述了猴子和大象因争论成功的关键而产生分歧,在猫头鹰的引导下,通过合作摘到河对岸高树上的果子,最终明白团队合作才是成功的真正关键。
【15题详解】
第四段划线词所在句提到“He pushed, pulled and even shook the big tree with all his strength, but the fruit wouldn’t budge an inch”,说明大象用尽全身力气推、晃大树,果实纹丝不动,因此划线词budge的含义是“移动”,对应Move。
【16题详解】
第五段提到“Once again, the elephant told the monkey to jump on his back. Together, they crossed the river safely”,说明猴子最后是跳到大象背上,让大象驮着自己过了河。
【17题详解】
第二段首先提到“The monkey argued that being fast and agile was key to success. The elephant disagreed”,然后第三段提到“the owl pointed to a shiny fruit on the top of a tall tree across the river. “Bring me that fruit,” he said”,接着第五段提到“Once again, the elephant told the monkey to jump on his back. Together, they crossed the river safely”和“the monkey climbed it and picked the fruit”,最后第七段提到“It was teamwork that made it possible…That’s the real key to success”,说明故事发展的顺序是: 大象和猴子争论成功的关键是什么→猫头鹰让它们去摘树顶的发光水果→大象驮着猴子过河→猴子爬上树摘下水果→猫头鹰告诉他们团队合作才重要。
【18题详解】
空格前提到“It was teamwork that made it possible—your speed and agility, and your strength, working together”,文章核心强调:单个个体都没法完成任务,团队合作才能成功,D选项符合主旨。

A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Humorous. D. Supportive.
【答案】19. D 20. B 21. D 22. D

Bryan的留言“Talking to yourself in the third person really helps. In psychology, it’s called self-distancing. It means stepping back a little and not getting stuck in your feelings.”
Start small. Learn as you go.”,小明虽然担心不完美但仍迈出一小步,符合文中“Start small”的推荐;③对应文章第五段建议:“Talk to Yourself Kindly... Try saying, ‘It’s okay,’ or ‘I’ll try again next time.’”,汤姆考试失利后自我安慰,符合文中友善对待自己的建议。
【22题详解】
文章第一段提到:“Although calling ourselves this way is a bit funny, it makes us feel warm at heart. It is like talking to a good old friend — relaxed and caring.”,作者使用了“warm at heart”、“relaxed and caring”等积极词汇,并紧接着给出了“tips... to love laoji more”的建议。Supportive最为符合作者态度。

【答案】例文:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’d like to recommend Plan B (Visiting the Science Park) for our field trip. The reason is that many students, including me, are interested in science and technology. It’s a great chance to explore programming and experiments, which are both educational and fun.
For additional activities, I suggest: Trying a virtual reality (VR) experience to learn about future technologies. Attending a workshop to build simple robots.
These activities will make the trip more wonderful. Looking forward to your reply!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Wang Hua
