Passage 3
Staying up and waking up an hour or two late on the weekend can be bad for your sleep. It will make you meet the “social jet lag (社交时差)” and scientists now think it can be bad for your health.
The results of the study show that the social jet lag has something to do with heart problems. The findings have nothing to do with the time of sleep and insomnia (失 眠).
Dr Michael A.Grandner was in the study team. They got ideas from a study on sleep, healthy activities, the environment and so on. The results came from 984 people between 22 and 60 years old. “These results show that besides the sleeping time, sleeping on time plays an important part in our health,” said Sierra B.Forbush.
According to Shelby Freedman Harris, the social jet lag isn’t a special thing. “It doesn’t have to be a sleep disorder (紊乱). It happens often and we know that people aren’t following the same sleep-wake time every day,” Ms.Harris said.
Staying up late on Friday and Saturday nights and sleeping for a long time on weekends can make our body clocks disordered. We often feel angry easily on Monday mornings because our bodies have difficulty getting used to the sleep time. “All of this happens because the inside body clock that rules our sleep and wake time is in disorder. Sometimes the jet lag of staying up past your usual bedtime is like the jet lag after travelling. You’re putting your body into a different time zone (时区) when you sleep late on weekends,” she said.
1. Why do people have the social jet lag?
A.Because they are in poor health.
B.Because they change their sleep habits.
C.Because they go to a different time zone.
D.Because they have poor sleep and bad feelings.

3. What do Ms. Harris’s words show?
A.The social jet lag is surely a sleep disorder.
B.The social jet lag mainly means getting up much earlier than usual.
C.Today’s people can’t stay away from the social jet lag at all.
D.The social jet lag is becoming a usual problem.
4. Which of the following ideas may the writer agree with?
A.Staying up and waking up late on the weekday can’t be bad for our sleep.
B.Enough sleeping time and regular sleep are important for our health.
C.The jet lag of staying up is always like the jet lag after a long trip.

Don’t Litter
Singapore tries hard to keep the country clean. Everyone must throw their litter in a bin, not on the ground. If someone litters, they might have to pay a fine (罚款) of up to $1, 000!

Don’t Chew Gum (嚼口香糖)
In Singapore, people can’t buy or sell chewing gum. This is because chewing gum is very sticky (黏糊糊的) and messy when people throw it away. To stop this problem, in 1992, Singapore decided to make a new law that said people mustn’t chew gum.
Cross the Road Safely
