Edinburgh International Book Festival 2025
The Edinburgh International Book Festival has unveiled (公布) its programme for this year.
Here, The Scotsman takes a look at who is appearing and how and when to buy tickets — as well as answering all of your key questions around the event.
The festival will run from August 9 to August 24. This is the second year that the event will take place at its new home in the Edinburgh Futures Institute, near the Meadows.
Who is speaking at this year’s festival?
Scottish authors Irvine Welsh and Maggie O’Farrell are to join Heartstopper writer Alice Oseman, as well as former first minister Nicola Sturgeon at this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival.

What are the venues?
The layout (布局) is likely to be fairly similar to last year’s event. However, the book festival will have an extended bar area and a specially-created Kids Zone. A bookshop will remain on site, where author signings will take place. Events will take place both inside and outside the Futures Institute, as well as a series of events known as the Front List in nearby McEwan Hall.

As a college student at Harvard University, Dr. John R. Adler, Jr. was attracted by the way surgery was done in science fiction shows. It didn’t involve scalpels or stitches (缝合). Instead, physicians directed energy to treat patients without pain or recovery time. That idea stuck with him.
Years later, he would help bring a version of futuristic surgery into reality with an invention called CyberKnife, an innovative radiosurgery system that uses precisely targeted radiation to treat tumors (肿瘤) without a single cut. Working as a neurosurgeon had shown him that a non-invasive (无创的) alternative to conventional surgery could be a game-changer for patients with complex or inoperable tumors.
Big medical device companies, on the other hand, weren’t convinced that CyberKnife was a worthwhile investment. For three years, Adler received one rejection after the next. It became apparent to Adler that bringing his vision of the future of medicine to life would require more than a medical degree — he’d need to figure out the business side as well.
“My ideas were too extreme, but I felt that radiosurgery is too good to be refused,” Adler explained. “I realized the only way to accomplish this was to do a start-up.”
And so, Adler began his journey of starting a company. He raised a round of funding from friends, family and other neurosurgeons who believed in the potential of his work. With their support, he launched his first company, Accuray, to commercialize CyberKnife. It wasn’t easy. He spent years dealing with funding challenges, regulatory barriers and doubt from the medical establishment before. CyberKnife gained real popularity. Along the way, he also needed to learn how to run a company, an entirely different skill set from his training in medicine. It was a difficult act of balancing research and development with human resources.
But the payoff was worth it. To date, more than one million patients have received treatment with technology from Accuray. Yet even that milestone didn’t feel close enough to Adler’s vision of “sci-fi”-style surgery.
24. What drove Adler to develop CyberKnife?
A. Surgical tools used in operation. B. The techniques in science fiction.
C. A request from his professors. D. The high demand for treatments.
25. Why did Adler decide to set up a company?
A. Business fields were more profitable.
B. He had difficulty in cooperating with others.
C. His medical degree disqualified him as a doctor.
D. He needed to put his invention into practice.
26. Which word can best describe Adler?
A. Determined. B. Reliable. C. Responsible. D. Kind-hearted.
27. What does Adler’s vision suggest about him?
A. He is easily satisfied. B. He doubts his own work.
C. He aims for greater goals. D. He ignores patients’ needs.

In a cave overlooking the ocean on the southern coast of South Africa, archaeologists discovered thousands of stone tools, created by ancient humans roughly 20,000 years ago. By examining tiny details, archaeologists are able to tell how the tools were made. Researchers analyzed these stone tools and discussed how the different techniques used to make them demonstrated the ways that prehistoric people traveled, interacted, and shared their skills.
“This is an important insight into how people who lived in this region were living, hunting and responding to their environment,” says Sara Watson, a scientist at the Field Museum’s Negaunee Integrative Research Center.
During the period when these blades (刀片) were made, between 24,000 and 12,000 years ago, the Earth was nearing the end of the last major ice age. Since so much of the Earth’s water was frozen in glaciers (冰川) and ice caps, the sea level was lower, and the region that’s now the coast of South Africa was a few miles inland. The caves, part of what archaeologists call the Robberg technocomplex, no longer overlook a plain — they’re in a towering cliff (悬崖) over a rocky beach.
Every day, Watson and her coworkers made the climb with all their equipment, weighing up to 50 pounds per person.
Beneath ancient dust and dirt, Watson and her team found thousands of stone tools: small, sharp blades, as well as the larger pieces of rock from which these blades were made. The bigger rock that blades are made from is called a core.
Watson and her coworkers observed several distinct patterns of how the cores had been broken into smaller blades. Overall, Watson says that the study reveals how much there still is to learn about the Robberg caves and the people who used them thousands of years ago. “We have a very long and rich history as a species, and humans go back a lot farther in time than most people realize,” says Watson. “People living around the last ice age were very comparable to people today.”
28. What can we know about the stone tools from paragraph 1?
A. They were employed for decoration.
B. They helped a lot in travelling.
C. They were found on the ocean floor.
D. They show ancient people’s life.
29. Why is a towering cliff mentioned?
A. To explain why the tools are well-preserved.
B. To stress how hard archaeological work is.
C. To highlight changes since the last ice age.
D. To criticize modern coastal development.
30. What does Sara Watson say about prehistoric humans?
A. They were technologically poor.
B. They were similar to modern humans.
C. Their social ability was limited to hunting.
D. Their existence has been thoroughly studied.
31. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A scientific journal. B. A literature review. C. A travel guide. D. A fashion magazine.

A town in Finland has begun using the world’s largest “sand battery” to help provide heat. The unusual method of storing energy allows the town to create heat when electricity prices are cheap, and store it for long periods of time. The heat can then be used whenever it’s needed.
Pornainen is a town in Finland with about 5,000 people. Most of the buildings in the town are heated through “district heating”. In a district heating system, hot water is piped into the buildings from a central heating plant. That way, each building doesn’t need to have its own boiler. The central heating system in Pornainen is run by a company called Loviisan Lämpö.
Until recently, Pornainen’s heat came from burning oil and wood chips. Loviisan Lämpö was looking for ways to cut the pollution it created. They hired a company called Polar Night to build the world’s largest sand battery. In 2022, Polar Night successfully built a smaller sand battery.
A sand battery works because sand (tiny rocks) can be heated to high temperatures and hold heat long in a well-insulated container. Pornainen’s battery uses crushed soapstone (滑石) — waste from a Finnish fireplace-maker — instead of sand. The soapstone can be heated to 750° Fahrenheit and the battery can hold onto this heat for months.
The battery took a year to build, standing roughly 42.5 feet tall and almost 50 feet across. It can heat Pornainen for about a month in summer and a week in winter. Used since early summer, it heats sand when electricity is cheapest; when heat is needed, air is pushed through the hot sand, heating it and the hot air can then be used to heat water or turn it into steam, warming up homes, government buildings, a library and a school.
About 43% of Finland’s energy is renewable, but solar and wind only work part-time — creating energy surpluses (剩余) or shortages. Storing energy solves this. The battery will cut winter wood chip use by 60%, aiding Loviisan Lämpö’s goal of being climate neutral by 2035. Polar Night is also looking into ways to turn the stored heat back into electricity.
32. What can the sand battery do for Pornainen?
A. It makes electricity cheap.
B. It cleans waste in time.
C. It stores heat for a long time.
D. It cuts other energy supplies.
33. Why did Loviisan Lämpö build the sand battery?
A. To reduce pollution. B. To better use electricity.
C. To test new technology. D. To heat more buildings.
34. What does the underlined word “well-insulated” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Hard to break. B. Good at keeping heat.
C. Easy to carry. D. Large in size.
35. Which is the best title for the text?
A. A New Tool Helps Produce Electricity B. Finland Has a Plan for Clean Energy
C. We Learn How to Store Winter Heat D. Largest “Sand Battery” Heats Finnish Town

The following are the benefits of using repetition in advertising.
For positive association
Repetition helps to create an emotional response. Ads that arouse (激起) an emotional response are more likely to be memorable and persuasive. And while it’s possible to create an emotional response with a single exposure, repeated exposures can help to intensify the effect. 36 . If people see your ad often enough, they might start to associate your brand with positive emotions like happiness or excitement.
37
Repetition can help to build brand recognition and ensure that potential customers are able to quickly identify a company’s products or services. The more people see your ad, the higher chances they’ll remember your brand. And if they see your ad enough times, they might even start to recognize your brand without even seeing the product itself. That’s the power of repetition!
For better understanding of the message
Repetition helps viewers understand the message. Have you ever seen an ad and felt so confused afterward that you actually want to see the ad again just so you can get your closure? 38 . By looking at the repeated ad, viewers have a better chance of understanding and grasping the message.
For sales increase
39 . So it stands to reason that increasing sales starts with increasing repeat business. And what’s the best way to encourage repeat business? That’s right, repetition! Every time a customer comes through your door (or clicks through your website), they should be greeted with a consistent message, friendly service, and high-quality products. It might seem like a lot of work to maintain this level of consistency. 40 .
A. For product quality establishment
B. However, the payoff is well worth it
C. For brand awareness and recognition
D. Repeat customers are the bread and butter of any business
E. Ads are often designed to send complex information briefly
F. As a result, the media repeatedly plays the same advertisement
G. Using repetition creates a positive association with your brand

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I took a slightly different route to do my shopping this morning. Usually, I’d walk down the busy main street — past the coffee shop that always smelled nice and the bookstore with colorful posters in the window — to the supermarket. But today, the sun was shining softly through the leaves, and the usual path felt a little boring. “Why not try that alley (小巷) behind the park?” I thought, turning along a quieter road lined with white fences.
The alley was nicer than I expected. Some houses had small gardens with sunflowers and roses, and a cat curling (蜷缩) up in front of a house stared at me lazily. Halfway along, I saw an old lady bending over her garden bed, struggling to lift a clay pot. Her hands shook a little as she grasped the pot’s edge. I stopped. To be honest, usually I’d hurry past, worried I’d bother strangers. But when she stumbled (蹒跚) slightly, I quickened my steps to her. “Ma’am, do you need help?” I asked.
She looked up, her eyes curving into a smile. “Oh, that’d be lovely, dear,” she answered. I lifted the pot easily — it was heavier than it looked — and set it where she pointed. She thanked me, then handed me a glass of cold lemonade and said, “Sit a minute, will you? My cat Mimi loves company.” A tabby cat walked over, rubbing against my shoe. We chatted for a few minutes — she told me her name’s Mrs. Lee and that she’d lived there for 20 years, adding that the garden was her favorite thing. By the time I left, the lemonade’s sweetness was still on my tongue.
I reached the supermarket, bought milk, eggs — my mom specifically told me to buy, and my mom’s favorite bread, and then headed back. But just as I turned into the alley, the plastic bag in my hand tore. Eggs rolled onto the ground — three of them broke, yolk flowing out, and milk spilling out.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I panicked: Mom needed those eggs to make a birthday cake for my little brother. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Holding the paper bag with Mrs. Lee’s eggs and tomatoes, I walked home slowly. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

(Text 1)
W: Excuse me, would you mind moving over a little bit, so my friend and I can sit together for the show?
M: No, not at all.
(Text 2)
W: I thought that movie was terrific, didn’t you?
M: I don’t know. It didn’t seem to have any meaning. I just think that a good movie should have a central theme at least.
(Text 3)
W: What’s the weather like tomorrow, Kenny?
M: Well, it’ll be a rainy day for northern Utah. Winds will be coming in from the northeast. But in the south, we can expect clear skies.
(Text 4)
W: Say, Joe, do you play card games?
M: No, I don’t. But I know how to play chess.
(Text 5)
W: Hello, Julie speaking. How may I help you?
M: Hi, Julie. Daniel here. I’m feeling quite ill today. I was hoping to take the day off to recover.
W: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. Try and get some rest.
(Text 6)
W: Hey, Mike, have you noticed how bad the pollution has been lately?
M: Yeah, it’s really worrying. Just look at the impact it’s having on our ecosystems. Animals are disappearing fast, and nature is getting out of balance. We need to act soon to save the environment.
W: Right! We can reduce our carbon footprint by using public transportation more and cutting down on single-use plastics.
M: And what about getting involved in local clean-up efforts? It’s small, but it helps.
W: Totally agree! If we all work together, we can make a big difference!
(Text 7)
W: I’m having a bad pain in my stomach, doctor.
M: How long has your stomach been hurting?
W: It’s been a couple of days. At first, I took some medicine for stomach acid, but the pain got really bad the day before yesterday. And my stomach hurt so much last night that I went to the hospital emergency room and got an injection.
M: Did you have a fever, any chest pain, or a sore throat?
W: Yesterday, I was a little hot, but it went away after I got a shot for my stomach pain. I threw up twice yesterday and once the day before, but I haven’t thrown up since getting the shot.
M: I think you might have a stomach bug. I’m going to order some blood tests. Get them done as soon as you can.
(Text 8)
M: Jessica! What job do you want to do after you graduate? I heard you’re really into painting.
W: Yeah, but I’d choose between being a doctor or being a lawyer. My cousins are in both fields, so they can guide me. What about you? To be a teacher or an engineer?
M: Actually, neither. My heart’s more into architectural design or real estate. I love the idea of creating spaces and helping people find the perfect place to live.
W: That sounds amazing! You’ve got such creative and practical options. Have you thought about which one you might prefer?
M: Not yet! I’m considering the pros and cons of each. Designing homes allows me to be really creative, while selling houses seems more interactive and dynamic.
W: Both are great choices! You still have time to decide. Oh, I’m already late for class. I need to rush now. See you!
M: Oh, right! Good luck with your class!
(Text 9)
W: Hey! Kevin, you’re finally here. We didn’t see you at the meeting this morning. The manager was asking where you were.
M: Oh, man, my car completely broke down. I was stuck on the side of the road for almost an hour. I tried calling to let someone know, but my phone died before I could get through.
W: Oh no, that’s rough. What happened to your car? Did it run out of petrol?
M: No, the engine is totally broken. It’s going to cost a fortune to fix it. I’m under a lot of pressure.
W: Wow, that’s frustrating. Have you thought about getting a new car instead of spending so much on repairs? It might be more cost-effective in the long run.
M: Um, I do like the idea of buying a new car, but I’m totally broke right now. A new car is way above my budget.
W: Maybe renting could be a good option while yours is being fixed! I heard a new rental store has a good promotion.
(Text 10)
M: Good morning, everyone! In today’s fast-paced world, technology continues to amaze us with its incredible advancements. Today, I’m thrilled to share with you one of the most groundbreaking inventions that not only enhances convenience but also addresses a critical aspect of our health. This remarkable invention is the Smart Health Mat! This innovative device was created by Sarah Johnson, a biomedical engineer. People might think Sarah invented it due to her strong interest in technology. But as a matter of fact, Sarah’s inspiration came from her father’s chronic back pain caused by poor sleep quality. After years of witnessing her father’s suffering, she realized many people face similar issues. Determined to find a solution, Sarah dedicated herself to developing a product that could improve sleep quality and monitor health. The Smart Health Mat monitors your sleep using advanced sensors to track changes in your heart rate and breathing. What makes this invention stand out is its ability to spot early signs of health issues, such as irregular heartbeats or breathing problems. This early detection can lead to timely medical intervention. In conclusion, the Smart Health Mat is not just a technological marvel. It provides tremendous support in addressing our health concerns. What a remarkable invention it is!

First, please don’t let this incident upset you too much — focusing on rest will help you recover faster. You could use this time to watch football match highlights or read sports articles, which might lift your spirits. Also, I’ll share our class’s football practice videos with you, allowing you to stay connected to the game you love.
I sincerely hope your leg will heal soon and you can get back to the football field before long.
Yours,
Li Hua

I panicked: Mom needed those eggs to make a birthday cake for my little brother. I knelt down, trying to pick up the unbroken ones, but my hands were messy. Suddenly, I heard Mrs. Lee’s voice — ”Oh, no, dear — let me help!” She brought a clean cloth and a paper bag, helped me wipe my hands, and carefully repacked the groceries. Then she went inside and came back with a dozen fresh eggs, pushing them into my bag. She said, “Take these — they’re just ripe.” She added a handful of cherry tomatoes, still warm from the sun.
Holding the paper bag with Mrs. Lee’s eggs and tomatoes, I walked home slowly. The usual route would have gotten me back faster, but this route — with its lemonade, Mimi’s soft sound, and Mrs. Lee’s kindness — felt far more precious. I thought about how I almost walked past her garden, too scared to speak up. Today, I didn’t just buy groceries; I learned that small changes — taking a different road, saying a simple “can I help” — can bring unexpected warmth. Tomorrow, I’ll keep my eyes open, ready to pass on this kindness to someone in need.
