Amanda Kofoeds had found a strange lump in her arm one day and visited a doctor at a friend's urging. During this time, she was enrolled in school for education and was currently uninsured due to the expense. She planned to save money so she could get on her husband' s insurance and then seek medical treatment for the cancer.
Her friends and family didn't want her to postpone her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign. The friend came up with the creative idea to spread the word and invite family, friends, and strangers who wanted to help to participate in a donation flash mob (快闪行动).The event started an outpouring of enormous generosity from the local community.
Amanda and her husband Clint teared up as the crowd passed by and the donations poured in. The generous act of kindness gave the family a comforting, and optimistic feeling during a time when all hope seemed lost. Clint said that Amanda struggled with the idea of asking for help. She felt guilty and undeserving compared to others who are also struggling.
In the time since, Amanda has enrolled in an insurance plan and has finished chemotherapy. Life for the family has started getting back to their normal routine.

The African Children’s Choir (合唱团) is made up of children who are 7 to 10 years old from Africa. They have incredible voices and spirit that amaze the audience everywhere they go!
And they go to a lot of places, all around the world. And not only do they travel a lot, but they perform with some superstar singers and celebrities for heads of state. But this is not what makes the choir so special.
Like New York’s PS22, they do not just sing, but truly put their hearts, souls and bodies into their words. But what is unique about the choir is that it offers hope, education and confidence to children who live in extreme poverty. For example, the kids in the choir are mostly from the poorest countries in the world. Many children live in one-room homes and walk more than 2 miles to get water for their family. Most of the children have lost one or both of their parents because of wars or diseases.
Through its music and education, the African Children’s Choir changes the lives of its children. It allows them to see the world. It gives them hope and confidence. It shows them that everything is possible. The choir even pays for their education through college. In 30 years, it has educated and changed the lives of over 50, 000 children. And, in turn, the children return to their hometowns with new thoughts and new skills to help improve their family and community. These children are truly helping to build a better Africa.

Virtue, by definition, is the moral excellence of a person. Morally excellent people have a character made up of virtues valued as good. They are honest, respectful, courageous, forgiving and kind, for example. They do the right thing, and don't bend to impulses, urges or desires, but act according to values and principles. Some might say good qualities are inborn. Actually, virtues need to be cultivated. With the habit of being virtuous, we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater happiness and fulfillment.
Virtues are universal and recognized by all cultures as basic qualities of well-being. However, practicing virtues is not easy. So often we know that it takes perseverance to reach our goals, and we still never get there. We know if we forgive, we'll be less angry. We know it takes courage to accomplish great things. So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck?
Because we have not yet consciously applied a virtue to a given situation so as to change its outcome such as in these examples: kindness towards someone who is having a bad day can make him or her smile and build rapport; trust in a relationship creates valuable, meaningful relationships; gratitude in a job loss can shift our focus from feeling low to how we can have a new, more fulfilling career; service to others can change lives, better neighborhoods and create stronger nations.
We know we are becoming more virtuous people, not only because of the results above but also because of the way other people respond to us. Our friends, families, co-workers, and neighbors will trust and rely on us. They will come to us for guidance and help. They will want to be around us because we inspire them to be better people. Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful, better life.
12. What can we know about virtuous people from the first paragraph?
A. They are born with virtue. B. They never make a mistake.
C. They have a habit of doing good. D. They act on the principle of profit.
13. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. Satisfying career. B. Practicing virtues.
C. Trust in a relationship. D. Basic qualities of well-being.
14. What does the underlined word “rapport” mean in the third paragraph?
A. A good greeting. B. A great atmosphere.
C. A good goodbye. D. A close relationship.
15. What is the author's purpose in the last paragraph?
A. To encourage readers to be more virtuous.
B. To encourage readers to live a purposeful life.
C. To encourage readers to offer others guidance.
D. To encourage readers to develop others' potential.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. A
【解析】
【导语】本文是议论文。文章主要论述了践行美德能让我们开发自己的潜能,过上更有目标、更美好的生活。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段最后一句“With the habit of being virtuous, we can take control of our lives and move them in the direction of greater happiness and fulfillment.(有了行善的习惯,我们就能控制自己的生活,让它们朝着更大的幸福和满足的方向前进)”可知,具有美德的人有行善的习惯。故选C项。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“However, practicing virtues is not easy.(然而,实践美德并不容易)”和 “So why then, if we know what to do, are we still stuck?(那么,既然我们知道该怎么做,为什么我们仍然被困住了呢?)”
根据文章最后一句“Practicing virtues allows us to develop our potential, and live a more purposeful, better life.(践行美德可以让我们发挥潜能,过上更有目标、更美好的生活)”可推断出,最后一段作者的目的是鼓励人们践行美德。故选A项。

In my time capsule, I plan to set some study goals, like getting high scores in important exams. I also wish I can develop a new hobby, such as painting, which I think will enrich my life. These plans and wishes are what I really look forward to achieving.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all started with the Food Fair, where groups of students prepared food representing different countries, in my school. I was excited to be in Group Spain. The group leader, Stan, designed a sign-up sheet for different tasks. There was a cooking task. I could do far better in cooking. So, I chose to cook Spanish dishes on the very day of the fair.
Yet, the first few weeks slipped away quickly, and no one seemed to be starting their jobs — probably because they were tired by their studies, or they were simply not in the mood. I was worried that we might present a bad Spain because of our slow progress. After telling other members in Group Spain about my worries and encouraging them to make preparations, we finally started the preparation work.
When we made preparations for the fair, I received a message from Stan. “How many cups of drink do you plan to prepare?” he asked. Maybe forty? I wasn’t sure. I asked the group members in charge of the planning about the number of people who would be at the fair, but they said they didn’t know. Out of other solutions, I answered Stan with my count and explained that I might need to confirm (确定) with the organizer of the fair to know the exact number.
Then one day later, another demand came, “By the way, can you tell me the price for the food?” Sending him the rough price of the food, I frowned. This was supposed to be the task of others. Why did I have to do it? Again, for the progress of our group, I did not think much.
Then came the third, “I mean I need specific numbers, the Unit price for each, and the total cost. Make a table and list all the things, will you?” Before I could do the market research for him, the fourth appeared. I tried to hold my manner as I felt rather dissatisfied when I realized that he was assigning (分派) others’ jobs to me. “That’s it. Enough is enough,” I said to myself.
注意:续写词数应为150左右。
Having carefully chosen language, I went forward.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
After hearing all those words, Stan said he understood my point and admitted his mistakes.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Having carefully chosen language, I went forward. With a firm but polite look, I found Stan and expressed my thoughts calmly. I told him that I was willing to take responsibility for cooking, but it was unfair to keep pushing extra work onto me. My voice trembled slightly with anxiety and annoyance, for I feared our group would fall into chaos if duties were not divided properly. I also mentioned that every member should do their own job instead of leaving everything to one person, hoping he could arrange tasks reasonably.
After hearing all those words, Stan said he understood my point and admitted his mistakes. He scratched his head in embarrassment and apologized sincerely for his thoughtlessness. He immediately rearranged the tasks, making sure everyone had clear duties. Relieved and grateful, I smiled and shook hands with him. Finally, we worked together efficiently and our Spanish food stand turned out to be a great success at the fair, filling our hearts with pride and joy.

Her friends and family didn't want her to postpone her treatment due to the expense. They took matters into their own hands and started a GoFundMe campaign.
8. What is special about the choir?
A. Its positive influence on poor children.
B. Performing together with famous people.
C. Its members truly putting their hearts into words.
D. Its members focusing on singing beautiful songs.
9. What can we learn about the members of the African Children’s Choir?
A. They have no parent.
B. They are all ten years old.
C. Many of them live a hard life.
D. Some of them come from PS22.
10. What can we learn from paragraph 4?
A. The African Children’s Choir makes a lot of money.
B. The African Children’s Choir has become very popular.
C. The African Children’s Choir is very helpful to its members.
D. The African Children’s Choir helps 50,000 children go to college.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell an inspiring story.
B. To advertise some choirs.
C. To introduce a special choir.
D. To encourage us to help African children.
