Work in pairs
1. What does the writer mean by “made plants his life”?
2. What does “quiet about” mean?
3.Which expression in the passage has a similar meaning?
4. Why does the writer mention “the seasons” in the last paragraph?
The writer means that plants were the most important part of Wang
Wencai's life.He spent his whole life studying plants.
It means "not saying anything about".
These expressions have a similar meaning: "didn't let
anybody know" and "hardly mentioned it".
The writer mentions "the seasons" to show that Wang
Wencai was closely connected with the natural world.
Think and share.
1. What does the title of the passage mean ?
2.What words will you use to describe Wang Wencai ?
The title means that plants are important in Wang Wencai's life. It also suggests that Wang spent his whole life studying plants.
I will use the words "hard-working", "humble" and "respectable" to describe Wang Wencai. He was hard-working because he spent over 70 years studying
plants and kept working even when he was seriously sick or lost sight in one eye. He was humble because he did not care about personal honour or wealth and hardly talked about his achievements. He was respectable because he made great contributions to science and loved nature all his life.
