Ellie Hamby and Dr. Sandy Hazelip, both 84 and from Texas, have proven that adventure knows no age limit. They shared their journey together and what they have learned from the world at over 80 years old on the Internet — and, more importantly, how they made it happen.
The women’s friendship began over 20 years ago on a medical trip in Zambia, Africa. Later on in Texas, both women found themselves like traveling around the world. So the pair started their adventures together to “far-flung (遥远的) places” two decades ago, but it was their latest, most ambitious trip that brought them to the world’s attention. They planned to travel around the world in 80 days at the age of 80.
The global adventure has taken them nearly everywhere. “We’ve been to all seven continents (洲), most of the world’s wonders and to almost 50 countries,” Hamby said. “The most interesting or unforgettable parts aren’t about the places, but about the people we met along the journey. And of course, our journeys have not been without moments of excitement, including a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway in 2011.”
Hamby and Hazelip said they had no idea their travels would turn them into social-media sensations, but they now get recognized in airports after a video on the Internet has received over 6 million views. Now they have realized the joy and inspiration they have provided for others, they are pleased to share their message of friendship and adventure.
For those who may feel it is too late to live out their dreams, Hamby and Hazelip offered a powerful final message: “Get up out of your easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make a plan and live.” They even penned a new book, Here We Go — Lessons for Living Fearlessly From Two Traveling Nanas, serving as a road map to live fully, no matter what your age.
24. What brought the pair together for the first time?
A. A travel club. B. An interstate flight.
C. A rescue program. D. A medical journey.
25. Which of the following made the pair’s journeys most memorable?
A. The people they came across.
B. The railway ride they experienced.
C. The famous wonders they saw.
D. The number of countries they visited.
26. What does the underlined word “sensations” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Harmful public events. B. Interesting music symbols.
C. Funny cultural exchanges. D. Widely talked-about persons.
27. What can be inferred about the pair’s views on aging?
A. They see it as a reason for increased care.
B. They regard it as a chance for new growth.
C. They view it as a key to their adventure.
D. They take it as a signal to slow life’s pace.

In recent years, Europe has experienced a rising frequency of extreme heat waves. According to the European Environment Agency, these weather events are becoming not only more common but also more serious. Many temperature records have been broken, and the health risks have worsened, especially for weak populations like the elderly and young children.
But why are these heat waves happening so regularly? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate (气候) Change (IPCC) reported that the warming air, a direct result of human caused climate change, is making heat waves more likely and more serious. This is because the hotter air can hold more water, which fuels weather extremes.
The results of heat waves go beyond discomfort and health risks. A report by the European Forest Fire Information System noted a great increase in wildfires during periods of extreme heat, which led to evacuations (撤离) and lots of property-damage. The science is simple: High temperatures and dry conditions create a perfect environment for fires to start and spread quickly. Furthermore, these fires not only destroy local ecosystems but also produce lots of carbon dioxide, which further worsens climate change.
Faced with this challenge, Europe is exploring a series of methods to deal with the influence of extreme heat and prevent wildfires. One way is the use of satellite technology and AI to watch and check the areas at risk of wildfires. This technology can provide early warnings, enabling quicker responses to wildfires.
There are also policies about approaching climate change, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions (排放). And new building rules that promote heat-resistant materials and urban planning that includes more green spaces are being considered to make cities better prepared for heat waves. What’s more, education plays a great role, which can equip young people with the knowledge and skills necessary to take part in climate action.
28. What is the direct cause of the increasing heat waves in Europe?
A. Increasing wildfires. B. The reduction of forests.
C. Human-caused climate change. D. Record-breaking high temperatures.
29. Why is the report mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To warn people about the danger of wildfires.
B. To prove heat waves add to the risk of wildfires.
C. To call on the public to protect the environment.
D. To stress the importance of early wildfire warnings.
30. What is Europe’s attitude towards heat waves?
A. Responsible and active. B. Concerned and anxious.
C. Doubtful and frightened. D. Uncaring and relaxed.
31. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Heat Waves Sweep Across Europe
B. Europe Battles Against Natural Disasters
C. How to Survive Extreme Weather Conditions
D. How Technology Prevents Wildfires from Happening

Research often points to exercise as a good way to improve mental health, but a recent study from the University of Georgia suggests that it’s not just physical movement that affects mental health. It’s how, where and why you exercise that makes the difference.
“In previous (以前的) research, physical-activity research has focused on how long someone exercises for or how many calories are burned,” said Patrick O’Connor, co-author of the study. “The amount of exercise has been the main way researchers have tried to understand how physical activity might influence mental health, while often ignoring whether those minutes were spent exercising with a friend or as part of a game.”
Many studies found that people who take part in regular leisure-time physical activity, like going for a run, taking a yoga class or biking for fun, tend to report lower levels of anxiety. But while leisure-time physical activity offers better mental health outcomes, these benefits may vary greatly depending on the environment of the activity, according to the researchers.
“For example, if a soccer player runs down the field and kicks the game-winning ball, their mental health is fantastic,” O’Connor said. “In contrast, if you do the exact same exercise but miss the goal and people are blaming (责备) you, you likely feel very differently.”
Many studies also showed that adopting regular exercise routines improved mental health, especially for individuals with existing mental health disorders. However, these studies were typically based on similar samples, so the results aren’t probably suitable for more diverse groups. “If we’re trying to help people’s mental health through exercise, then not only do we need to think about the amount and the mode, we also need to ask: What is the context (背景)?” O’Connor said.
For O’Connor, the key point is clear. It’s not just movement that matters. It’s the meaning, the context and the experience of the activity that determine the influence of exercise on mental health.
32. What has been largely overlooked in previous research?
A. The length and type of exercise.
B. The social environment of physical activity.
C. The number of calories burned during exercise.
D. The physical health outcomes of regular exercise.
33. What can we learn from the soccer player example?
A. Winning ensures mental health benefits.
B. Playing football can improve mental health.
C. Blame from others leads to bad mental health.
D. Context matters in how exercise affects mental health.
34. What does O’Connor suggest scientists do?
A. Avoid studying people with mental health disorders.
B. Focus more on the amount of exercise in future studies.
C. Pay attention to the context of exercise in their research.
D. Prove what is the real effect of exercise on mental health.
35. Which situation best matches the “context effect” described in the text?
A. Lily buys lighter running shoes and runs faster.
B. Ben sleeps nine hours the night after swimming.
C. Mary loses 2 kg after jogging 5 km every day for a month.
D. Tom feels great cycling with friends but bored when cycling alone.

Why Reading Matters
Reading is more than a classroom activity — it unlocks a world of possibilities for students. Strong reading skills build confidence, improve knowledge, and open the door to academic success. It is the thread that ties all learning together. ____36____
Reading doesn’t just prepare students for tests and assignments. ____37____ When children read, they’re not just learning words — they’re building cognitive (认知的) skills that help them analyze, problem-solve, and imagine new possibilities.
____38____ The more children read, the more they’re exposed to new words and ways of expressing ideas. This not only helps them express their thoughts clearly but also improves their confidence in writing and speaking. They also become better listeners and speakers.
Furthermore, reading helps develop empathy (同理心). When you read, you can find yourself thinking about the characters in a book as if they are real people, with viewpoints possibly very different from your own. ____39____ This means children can practice feeling certain emotions and learn to imagine what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes.
Finally, reading is a great way to reduce stress. When you read, you take your attention away from the problems of the day. ____40____ Reading a book is often more effective at reducing stress than listening to music or even taking a walk.
A. This helps you relax and lower your heart rate.
B. This allows for the growth of emotional intelligence.
C. Therefore, students should only read non-fiction books.
D. It also shapes how they think and interact with the world.
E. All students are required to read for 20 minutes every day.
F. An early love of reading can shape a child’s entire educational journey.
G. Reading also builds a richer vocabulary and stronger communication skills.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The ceremony (庆典) of my graduation from graduate school would be held in a school hall that I had never visited.
Somehow I heard about the stairs that I’d have to pass in the ceremony. I decided I couldn’t bear the pressure of steps. Walking across the stage was going to be scary enough.
I called my friend Sally in tears and told her I was not going. The stairs were driving me crazy. We had been through many hard times during graduate school. We took all our classes together, studied together, and edited each other’s work.
Sally was like my note-taker because I write slowly due to cerebral palsy (脑瘫). She knew I needed a good cry when I called her because I didn’t know how to do it.
Sally said she’d take care of everything; she would make a plan. My breathing slowed, and I could feel my body again. I knew that I had to sit quietly and let Sally work her plan, whatever that was. She made me promise that I would be at the school hall in an hour to get into my full dress.
I arrived at the school hall and saw the stairs on both sides of the stage. I would walk up on one side, shake everyone’s hand, and then walk down the other side to leave the stage.
It wasn’t just the stairs I worried about; it was the handshake, too. My cerebral palsy mostly affects my right side, giving me limited coordination (协调性) of my right hand. Not only would I need to walk the stairs and the stage in front of hundreds, but I also would need to shake hands with five teachers using my right hand.
The whole day was falling apart fast, and my tears would flow again. But I knew that I just had to trust Sally. When I found her, she rushed over and hugged me. “I have it all worked out,” she said. “It’s going to be fine.”

From the kick-off, both teams displayed remarkable teamwork and passion. Players raced across the field, making precise passes and brilliant shots. Grade 10 took the lead in the first half, but Grade 11 fought back fiercely and equalized in the second half. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, with neither side giving an inch.

【答案】范文
As my name got closer, I still couldn’t help feeling frightened. My heart raced, and my legs felt shaky under the heavy gown. Sally squeezed my hand reassuringly. Just then, a strong classmate appeared beside me. Together with Sally, they each offered me an arm for support. Taking a deep breath, I leaned on them. Step by step, we slowly ascended the intimidating staircase. The hundreds of eyes watching felt overwhelming, but the firm grip of my friends anchored me. Their presence gave me the courage to keep moving forward towards the stage.
After my classmate and Sally walked me up the stairs, I found no handshakes, but hugs. To my immense surprise and relief, each teacher, one after another, stepped forward not with an outstretched hand, but with open arms. They embraced me warmly and sincerely. The overwhelming fear instantly melted into tears of gratitude. In that moment, Sally’s brilliant plan became clear. This simple, heartfelt gesture bypassed my physical worry completely. Walking off the stage felt lighter, filled with a profound sense of accomplishment and deep appreciation for Sally’s kindness and the teachers’ understanding.
