He wanted to hoot, so he tried again and again. He took a deep breath through his beak and blew out air with all his effort, but he still made no sound at all. Some other owls laughed at him, and he felt very sad. He thought he would never be able to hoot like the others.
His mother comforted him patiently. She told the little owl to wait patiently, saying that he would soon have a grown-up voice and learn to hoot.
Months later, one evening, the young owl woke up in his tree. He saw a crow flying straight towards him. Suddenly, he cried out “Hoo, hoo, hoo!” loudly. The crow flew away quickly. The young owl ran after it, hooting happily all the way. His mother had been right, he finally learned to hoot!

Have you ever wondered where Chinese characters (汉字) come from? Let’s travel back 3,000 years and follow one simple character: 马.
About 3,000 years ago, during the Shang Dynasty, people wrote characters on turtle shells and animal bones. The earliest “horse” looked like a simple drawing of a real horse—you could clearly see its head, four legs, and tail.
When the Zhou Dynasty began, people started writing characters on bronze vessels (容器). This style, called “metal script”, made the “horse” character rounder and more decorative.
In 221 BCE, Emperor Qin Shi Huang standardized the writing system. He called it zhuanshu, or “seal script”. The “horse” character became simpler, but still a bit like a real horse.
Around 300 BC, the government created lishu, or “clerical script”. The “horse” character became flatter and wider. Its four legs turned into four short strokes (笔画). The tail became a simple line.
During the Tang Dynasty, kaishu or “regular script” became the standard. The “horse” character got its modern form. Every stroke had a clear start and finish. Calligraphy (书法) masters spent years perfecting this style.
In the 1950s, the government made characters simpler to help people read and write. The traditional “馬” became “马”—with only three strokes.
46. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By telling a story.
B. By listing numbers.
C. By explaining a fact.
D. By asking a question.
47. Which is the correct order of changes for the “horse” character?
① Seal Script ② Metal Script ③ Clerical Script ④ Regular Script ⑤ Simplified Script
A. ①→②→③→④→⑤
B. ①→④→③→②→⑤
C. ②→①→③→④→⑤
D. ②→①→④→③→⑤
48. Which of the following characters is written in regular script?
A. B. C. D.
49. Why did the Chinese government introduce simplified characters in the 1950s?
A. To help more people learn to read and write.
B. To follow the international trend of writing.
C. To make the characters more artistic.
D. To make the writing system more difficult.

Mary没有打扰,只是静静等待,与Tony疑惑“What is she doing here?”

A
Once there was a young owl living in the forest. All the older owls around him could hoot clearly, shouting “Hoo, hoo, hoo!” from the tall trees every day. However, the young owl couldn’t make the hooting sound, because he was not old enough.
32. The young owl was sad because he couldn’t hoot like the older owls.
33. The young owl’s mother told him that he would never learn to hoot.
34. The other owls laughed at the young owl because his hoot was very strange and funny.

从第三段“His mother comforted him patiently. She told the little owl to wait patiently, saying that he would soon have a grown-up voice and learn to hoot.”
根据文中第二段“He took a deep breath through his beak and blew out air with all his effort, but he still made no sound at all. Some other owls laughed at him...”,是因为它发不出声音才被其他猫头鹰嘲笑,而不是因为它的叫声奇怪有趣,该表述错误。
依据最后一段“Months later, one evening, the young owl woke up in his tree. He saw a crow flying straight towards him. Suddenly, he cried ‘Hoo, hoo, hoo!’ loudly.”

D 47. C 48. C 49. A
文章开篇以问句“Have you ever wondered where Chinese characters come from?”
最后一段明确指出:“In the 1950s, the government made characters simpler to help people read and write”,说明简化汉字是为了帮助更多人学习读写。

Julia is ten years old and she has a nine-month-old puppy (幼犬) Walter. Both of them have been deaf since birth, and now Julia is training Walter with sign language.
Julia’s family saved Walter from the SPCA in California. “When I first held Julia, she couldn’t hear my voice, she smelt my neck. And when I met Walter, he did almost exactly the same thing as Julia. I remember looking at him and I just knew he was meant to be ours,” Julia’s mother said.
Julia has taught Walter different sign language commands—such as “sit”, as well as the signs for “food” and “water”. The two are always together. Julia’s mother notes that Walter waits for Julia to finish her homework so they can play in the backyard together. “She’s learned a whole other kind of love,” said Julia’s mother. “I think they were both meant to find each other.”
Now Julia and Walter are inseparable Every morning, they greet each other with warm hugs. When Julia practices sign language, Walter watches carefully and follows the signs quickly. They run in the park and share snacks happily. Julia says, “Walter is my ears and my heart.” Their story tells us that true friendship can connect hearts, no matter what challenges we face.
