When the 15th National Games started in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province on November 9th, 2025, its official mascots, “Xiyangyang” and “Lerongrong”, soon became stars on the Internet. They even got the nickname “Dawan Chickens”. This lovely name made the mascots loved by people all over the country.
The mascots are designed based on Chinese white dolphins. These are rare animals that live in the Pearl River Estuary (珠江口) near the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. There are three-colored waves on their heads. The colors respectively stand for Guangdong’s kapok (木棉花) red, Hong Kong’s bauhinia (紫荆花) purple and Macao’s lotus (莲花) green. This shows the unity of the three places. Their round bodies and lively poses made people think of Guangdong’s famous chicken dishes. Since chicken is very important in Cantonese food, this funny nickname came into being. Liu Pingyun, the head of the design team, was happy with this public understanding. He hoped to let more people know the mascots’ meaning.
The mascots are also popular because of their energetic shows. Students from local martial arts (武术) schools dress up as them. They practiced for months to put on flexible acts, like spinning and dancing. Their lively interactions made them loved by people online. Outside the sports fields, products with their images are very popular. Many of these products were sold out quickly.
Besides being cute, the “Dawan Chickens” have deep cultural meanings. They stand for the Greater Bay Area’s marine (海洋的) culture and the sports spirit of athletes. The combination (联合) of the official design ideas and the public’s creativity makes the Games more fun. It also shows our cultural confidence. As these loved mascots keep attracting people both online and offline, they have become a nice bridge that connects sports, culture and people’s excitement.

Some things usually have different meanings in different cultures. Here are some words about animals that are used differently in Western cultures and Chinese culture.
Most phrases in Chinese about the dog, such as “a homeless dog” “a mad dog” “a running dog” and “a dog catching a mouse”, have negative (消极的) meanings. But in Western countries, dogs are considered honest and good friends of humans. The word “dog” has positive meanings. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every dog has its day” means each person has good luck at times.
As we know, dragons are very important in Chinese culture. In ancient times, dragons were seen as strong and magical animals. They brought hope and good luck. The ancient emperors compared themselves to dragons. Nowadays, many parents want their children to become “dragons”. But in ancient Western cultures, dragons were dangerous animals. Heroes killed them to protect people.
▲ The rose is regarded as a symbol of love in both China and some Western countries. People in China and the West think the rose also stands for peace, courage and friendship. When we pay attention to the cultural meanings of words, we will understand them better.
28.Which situation shows the similar meaning to the underlined part “every dog has its day” in Paragraph 2?
A.You lost your favorite movie poster.
B.You coughed for days after eating ice-cream.
C.You finally got a job after having failed many times.
29.What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

C.However, some things have similar meanings in Chinese culture and Western cultures.

When you see someone and they don’t recognize you at first, they may excuse themselves by saying they’re “bad with faces”. 32 You might think they’re just making excuses, but being bad with faces is actually a medical problem called face blindness. A new study shows that we should know more about it.
33 It makes it very hard to recognize people, even if you can see well, think clearly and remember things normally. Their study found that some people with face blindness can’t even recognize their own family or close friends if they meet them in surprising places.
29 adults with face blindness in the UK took part in an online survey. These adults were asked to share their experiences of living with the condition. Of these people, 35% said they often ran to recognize their closest family members if they meet them in unexpected places. 34 The researchers said that most people don’t know much about face blindness, which may make it harder for people to understand those who have the condition.
According to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), face blindness can affect the ability to recognize emotions on other people’s faces and guess their ages. 35
The NHS adds that the difficulty of recognizing faces may make it harder to make friends, or cause problems at work or school, and this could affect the mental health of people with the condition.
A.In other words, they have a hard time remembering people’s faces.
B.And the most terrible thing is that they are easy to get lost in strange places.
C.It may also influence the ability to follow the plots of TV shows or movies.
D.Researchers from the UK and the US described face blindness as a life-long condition.
E.And 55% said they couldn’t always recognize their closest friends when seeing them in new places.

In recent years, more and more people, especially teenagers, are facing weight problems. To help people develop healthy habits and keep a proper weight, China starts an important public health project known as the “Weight Management Year”.
The project includes the following areas. First, it encourages public to form healthy habits. Families and schools are advised to use tools like weight scales (秤) and health calendars to record progress. Schools are also taking steps to control sugary snacks and make sure students take part in at least one hour of physical activity daily. Second, cities are improving social support by building more parks, sports centers and walking trails (小路). For example, a popular 50-kilometer hiking event in Foshan connects exercise with outdoor exploration. Third, medical organizations now offer “weight management clinics (诊所)” where doctors give people useful advice on balanced diets and exercise plans.
Health experts are ready to offer people practical ways for having a healthy weight. For example, instead of having fried chicken every day, we can choose grilled (烤的) chicken, which is less risky. More importantly, people can get free recipes (菜谱) online for each daily meal. Last month, a vlogger posted the changes of his weight. He followed the recipes provided by the government and lost 2.5 kilos in a week.
The “Weight Management Year” project sends a clear message: achieving a healthy weight is not just about appearance but about building a longer, more energetic life.By getting changes little by little, the public will become healthier, then a healthier society is ahead of us.
56.Why does China start the “Weight Management Year” project?
