I was so scared that I couldn’t move. 14 My dad started to jump up and down in their tent. This woke the snake up and it moved into the forest near the lake. When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very quickly and become strong enough. 22 They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
When the tree is 20 to 25 years old, it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. 23 It’s also a great place for a tree house or a place for us to read a book.
Day by day, trees begin to grow older and older and even die. At this time, they still have their important place in nature. 24

After that, I dug a deep hole in each flowerpot and put one young flower plant in. 28
After I had planted all the flowers, I started to look for the right place for them. 29 I thought my balcony (阳台) was the right place, so I put all the flowerpots there.

Do Snakes Make Friends?
Stories sometimes describe snakes as being cold-hearted. However, a group of scientists don’t believe that. 36
To prove (证明) this, scientists did an experiment with garter snakes (束带蛇). They collected forty snakes and put them in groups of ten inside a special space. The experiment lasted for eight days. 37
The space had four small shelters where the snakes could stay. During these days, the scientists watched how the snakes moved. 38 When the snakes were put back, they returned to the same groups again! The scientists believe this could show the garter snakes make friends.
39 Some were shy and stayed inside the shelters most of the time, while the brave ones moved around and explored more. The scientists also noticed that the same snakes often stayed together, whether they were shy or brave. This means they might feel safer or more comfortable with friends.
The scientists believe we should not be surprised that snakes form friendships. “All animals, even snakes, need to communicate with others.” said Morgan Skinner, one of the scientists. 40
A.The results of the experiment were very interesting.
B.So, maybe snakes are not as cold as we often think.
C.They say that one type of snake can make close friends.

On August 19, 2025, London Zoo did its once-a-year check to see how much all its animals weigh. 41 The keepers do this to make sure the over 10,000 animals are healthy. The numbers they get are then saved and sent to other zoos so everyone can learn how to best look after rare (罕见的) animals.
Getting animals to stand on a scale (称) is not easy. 42 They train some animals to stand in the right place, but sometimes they have to hide the scales in their living area quietly. That way the animals won’t even notice it. For example, the penguins walked onto the scale on their own while waiting for their morning meal. To weigh large animals like capybaras (卡皮巴拉), the keepers kept them calm with treats and soft touches. 43
Not all the animals made it easy. 44 A zoo worker said they were especially hard to control (控制). Unlike the penguins, who wait nicely in line, the squirrel monkeys (松鼠猴) usually jump the queue.
The heaviest animal was a giraffe named Molly, who weighed 820 kilograms. The smallest was a tiny ant, weighing almost nothing. 45 It helps the zoo decide what food is best for each animal and creates fun eating games to keep them active and healthy.
A.But the keepers have smart plans.
B.Each year, animals from frogs to tigers take part.
C.However, this work is about more than just numbers.
D.To weigh smaller animals, the keepers used kitchen scales.
E.For example, squirrel monkeys were among the hardest to weigh.

Global warming (全球变暖) is a big problem that we must solve. One of the best things we can do is to plant more trees. 46 According to a news report, China is doing a great job of “greening the world”.
A team of scientists at Boston University has been working with NASA to study the Earth’s green vegetation (植被). They used a special NASA camera and found that global leaf area had grown by 5% since the early 2000s. 47 That’s about one-quarter (四分之一) of the size of the whole Amazon rainforest.
“The growth mainly came from China’s forest protection programs,” NASA said. For example, since 1962, China has been planting trees in Saihanba (塞罕坝), Hebei Province.
48 But now, China has turned the area into the country’s largest man-made forest. There are a great number of trees in Saihanba and the environment there is becoming better and better.”
49 For example, they use Ant Forest (蚂蚁森林). Ant Forest is a feature in the Alipay app. It gives users points for doing eco-friendly (环保的) things such as reusing plastic bags. Users can then use these points to water and grow their own virtual (虚拟的) trees. If the virtual trees are big enough, Ant Forest will plant real trees somewhere in the world. 50
A.Saihanba was once a large desert.
B.It has planted more than 55 million trees in this way.

Trees are one of the oldest “citizens (公民)” of our Earth. They keep our air clean, provide us with lots of things and so on.
Just like us, trees change a lot as they grow. At the age of 1 to 3, young trees learn how to protect themselves. 21

Some time ago, I got some young flower plants from a friend. So I started to learn to plant flowers.
I first made sure how large the flowers would get when they grew up. 26 Then I went to a store and bought five flowerpots (花盆).
Next, I got the correct soil (土壤) and put some in each flowerpot. 27 Because that soil was not good for the young plants. Soft soil sold in bags at stores was the right kind, because the young roots were able to grow more easily in it.
After that, I dug a deep hole in each flowerpot and put one young flower plant in. 28
After I had planted all the flowers, I started to look for the right place for them. 29 I thought my balcony (阳台) was the right place, so I put all the flowerpots there.
The last thing to do was look after them carefully. I watered them once a day. 30 Sometimes I added some fertilizer (肥料) to make them grow better.
Three months passed and now the flowers are really beautiful.

C.Chinese people have also joined in other forest protection activities.
D.Trees can take in CO2 in the air and stop global warming.
