M:Sarah, how's your final project coming along?
W:I've revised it so many times that I'm not sure if it'll ever be done.
(Text 2)
M:Have you received the new National Geographic? It's already Wednesday.
W:Sorry! All deliveries have been delayed lately.I think it might not arrive until the day after tomorrow.
(Text 3)
M:You look sad,Laura.What's wrong?
W:I hate being a secretary making and answering phone calls. And I'm tired of preparing reports for the sales
manager.It's boring.
(Text 4)
W:Which of the attractions did you visit, and which one did you like the most?
M:First,I went to the art gallery, which had some amazing exhibits. But it couldn't compare to the church,
which is such a historic part of the city's culture. That was definitely my favourite.I also visited the
botanical garden, but it didn't really catch my interest.
(Text 5)
M:I lost my library card. How can I get a new one?
W:Fill out this application form and provide a proof of identity. Please wait over there while we process your
request.
M:OK,I've filled out the form and brought my ID card.
W:Perfect!I'll have your new library card ready in a few minutes.
(Text 6)
M:Actually,we're doing a customer survey at the moment. So I wonder if I could fill in this form about you.
W:Go ahead.
M:What sort of films do you like watching then?Action movies?
W:Not really. My husband always insists we watch science fiction movies but I prefer documentaries.
M:OK.Thank you!
(Text 7)
W:Dr.Brown,I'd like to know your opinion on my decision regarding the topic of my research paper.
M:Sure. In the beginning, you were thinking of focusing on the impact of renewable energy on modern cities,
but then you were considering the influence of traditional architecture in rural areas of the southern region,
right?
W:Exactly.I was really torn between the two topics.
M:Well,I believe you were right to stick to your original idea. There is a wealth of information available on
renewable energy from online databases.
W:Yes,I discovered that.I also searched through many books, but they didn't provide much useful information. But
once I settled on my original topic,I found a lot of valuable data in specialized journals.
(Text 8)
M:I really feel like eating some chocolate.
W:If you really want, just have some.
M:But it's bad for my health.
W:It depends.A little bit won't do any harm, and some dark chocolate is actually good for you.But I like
white chocolate.
M:For me,nothing is better than milk chocolate.I once went into a chocolate shop in France and it was like
heaven.The products there were fantastic.
W:They say the best chocolate comes from Germany, but I believe Belgium chocolate is supposed to be the
best.
M:Oh,you're making me so hungry for chocolate.Shall I go to a supermarket and get some?
W:Maybe you could check out the chocolate workshop around the corner. They offer hands-on chocolate-making
experiences and you can even bring home your own creations.
M:Good idea!

M:Good afternoon.Community Center.
W:Hi.I'm new in town, and I am curious about the services the Community Center has to offer.
M:What are you interested in?
W:Well, let's start with kids.I have a teenage son.
M:Right now, during the school year,we have private lessons for teens,in all subjects.
W:Great.He needs help with math.
M:We can certainly help with that.Just have him come by any Wednesday or Saturday afternoon.
W:Fantastic.What about sports?
M:We have tennis lessons on Sunday mornings for teens and Sunday afternoons for adults.
W:For myself,I'd be more interested in yoga.
M:Our yoga classes take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
W:Great.I also like reading.Do you have any book clubs?
M:We have just started one.But it is for adults only.We may start up one for teens next summer.
W:Maybe I'll come in one day next week and sign up for some classes.
M:That would be fine, but don't come on Monday because we're closed that day. We're open Tuesday through
Sunday.
W:Oh.Thanks for...Maybe I'll stop by on Tuesday then.
(Text 10)
M:Welcome to Stanton University.I'm here to tell you about the various halls of living. We aim to offer
accommodation in halls to all first-year students.First of all,there's Brown Hall,which as you'll see,is
not the most modern of buildings but it is very popular. It's got a good sense of community. It has recently
had a gym built.Another option is Blake Residence, which is built like a large house and so everybody cooks
and eats together. This is an all-girl dormitory. The largest hall we have is Queens Building and this has
been upgraded recently. The original parking area has been built on,so that it has a large common room and
each bedroom now has its own shower room.A further option is the Parkway Flats, which won an award
for design in its day and this building now has a preservation order on it.The Flats also has many extra
facilities,such as a special computer room,a small library and a self-service restaurant.The cost of
breakfast, lunch and dinner is covered in the fees for this hall so it does look a bit more expensive. The last
one we can offer you is Temple Rise, which again is slightly more expensive than the other halls as the
rooms are larger. However, the hall has domestic staff who clean the rooms once a week,so this might be
an attractive option for the messier ones among you.

Parenting is difficult, but it needn't be something you do alone.Recently,a woman
named Brittany Cole found herself at a loss by what her daughter did. When telling Brittany
about her day at school, her daughter referred to her friends by their physical traits().In
doing so,some of her friends will be called "fat".Brittany was fearful that her daughter
would unintentionally harm them.
What makes Brittany struggle is that her daughter doesn't view "fat"as bad.She often
refers to someone in her family as "fat",clearly in a positive way.Plus, many people make
the word“fat”a neutral(中性的)description rather than a bad one..This is something
Brittany wants, too,so she's been hesitant to tell her daughter that the word is bad when it
isn't-it's society's view of the word, which is the problem. So Brittany reached out to folks
online for their thoughts.
The discussion on what Brittany should do get heated.Because the word "fat"still holds
a negative meaning by society as a whole, and there are people who feel very deeply about the
way a situation like this should be handled.
Brittany chose to take the advice of those who recommended steering her kid away from
using any kind of physical descriptions rather than just the word "fat"."My son is 5.I've
always had a 'we don't comment on others'bodies'rule,"one mom explained."I let nobody
use words like‘fat'or‘skinny'around them.”
By having her child focus less on physical descriptions, and more on things like hobbies,
Brittany hopes to encourage her to view these elements of a person as more important than the
way they look. It's so great to see parents help each other out, even if they don't know each
other.
"The fact that you're asking ANYTHING means you're a GREAT mom,"one mom
noted.“The ones who get it get it,.”another said.“You're doing a good job..”

A.To make her views popular.
B.To introduce her daughter.
C.To learn about people's ideas.
D.To voice her thoughts on“fat”.
26.What does the underlined word "steering"in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A.Leading.
B.Preventing.
C.Accepting.

B.Other parents admire Brittany's effort.

Brains are usually considered a sterile()zone.But that's not the case for some
fish.Wild and lab-grown salmon have active bacterial()communities in their brains.
Most of the bacteria found in brains of lab-grown rainbow trout appear to have initially come
from their blood. That suggests that bacteria from other parts of the body can go through the
如
blood-brain barrier.
Bacterial infection of animal brains has usually been linked to disease. For instance, some
谢
brain bacteria may be linked with Alzheimer's disease in people. But brain bacteria aren't
necessarily bad news for fish, which seem mostly healthy despite hosting bacteria inside their
长
body."The bacteria might even help the fish pick up on bacterial cues()in the environment,
helping fish in rivers, said Irene Salinas,an immunologist studying fish at the University of
区
New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Salinas'team searched for bacteria in brain samples from rainbow trout.
数
First, they removed the blood from the animals. Then, they took tissue samples and
tried to grow bacteria from them. The four brain regions they sampled had similar levels of
拓
bacteria.Several wild fish-types of salmon and trout-also have bacteria in their brains. But
they had different types and amounts than those found in lab-grown trout. These might have
come from different internal organs. The researchers shared their findings in Science Aduances.
潮
The team grew a total of 54 types of bacteria from lab-reared fish. That shows that fish
brains have a bacterial community.Genetic analyses also revealed signs that bacteria adapt to
living in the brain. The DNA of these bacteria suggested at structures that may help them
pass through the blood-brain barrier.
The new findings open up questions about whether only fish have bacteria in the brain.
Other animals may have brains full of bacteria, too."When it comes to fish, there's lots of
diversity of different fishes on the planet,"Salinas said.Maybe deep-sea fish or sharks have
unique brain bacteria that help them live far below the surface.
28.What is special about salmon?
A.They live well with bacteria in the brains.
B.Their brains are mostly bacteria-free.
C.Bacteria make their blood complex.
D.They have strong blood-brain barriers.
(三)·英语第4页(共8页)
29.How might bacteria in fish brains benefit the fish?
A.By curing them of brain diseases.
B.By increasing their reproductive ability.
C.By strengthening their blood-brain barriers.
D.By helping sense environmental bacterial signals.

A comprehensive assessment by researchers, including Rafael Auras from Michigan State
最
University, sought to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of replacing polyethylene()
or PE packaging like bags, films, and containers with alternative materials, including paper, glass
如
and steel.
The assessment involved four factors:contribution to global warming, use of mineral
的
resources, fossil energy consumption and water scarcity().The findings reveal that PE
packaging can have an average life cycle global warming potential,or GWP,savings of
长
approximately 70%compared to a mix of commonly used packaging materials in the US.
The assessment focused on five major packaging applications. These include examples of
packaging used for dog food, shampoo, water bottles, cosmetics and other everyday products.
区
Among the report's key findings, researchers explained that PE-based packaging used
fewer fossil resources than alternatives in 14 of 19 products. In 16 of the 19 packaged products,PE
郑
produced a lower GWP,water scarcity, and mineral resource use.
"Remarkably, those instances where PE did not have the lowest impact were typically
郝
found when compared with lightweight paper alternatives that contained additional materials
such as a plastic liner,"Auras said."These alternatives required the use of multiple materials
粗
to meet functional performance requirements, which could involve functions like stabilizing
products or protecting against moisture(潮湿).”
"Life cycle assessments help us see the full picture of environmental balance,"said
Auras."Our study examines a wide range of PE packaging applications and provides insights
where there has not been a PE-specific study done before. This is valuable because even within
a broad material category, individual materials will have their own implications for materials,
producing,and end-of-life phases,he added.
PE currently holds the largest share of the global packaging market.Switching materials
without careful analysis could lead to unintended harm. For instance, lightweight alternatives
might seem environmentally friendly, but they often require additional materials, thus canceling out
their advantages.Effective solutions must balance environmental impacts across a product's
entire lifespan and prioritize recycling where possible.
32.What can be learned about PE packaging according to the text?
A.It leads to more resource use.
B.It keeps products more stable.
C.It requires more production procedures.
D.It is relatively environmentally friendly.

33.How did the researchers mainly get the findings?
A.By making comparisons.
B.By analyzing previous data.
C.By conducting interviews.
D.By investigating companies.
34.What is Rafael Auras's attitude to life cycle assessments?
A.Doubtful.
B.Favorable.
C.Uncaring.
D.Negative.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.How to lower packaging impacts.
B.The effect of life cycle assessments.
C.The superiority of PE packaging.
