Passage 1
I am Judy, and I am 15 years old. Today, my mum is busy, so she asks me to go to pick up my 7-year-old sister Lily from school. When Lily sees me, she runs to me and hands me her water bottle, saying, “Sister, can you help me open it? The lid (盖子) is really tight (紧的).” She also tells me that she doesn’t drink any water all day and she is thirsty. After I open it, she drinks a lot and feels much better.
I ask her why she doesn’t ask her teacher for help. She says she thinks about it but doesn’t do it in the end. “I don’t want the teacher to think I can’t do it,” she says. “And she is always busy.”
This gets me thinking about why it’s not easy for us to ask for help. Sometimes, we may worry that others think we are not ▲ enough. We may also feel like we’re bothering (打扰) them. However, it’s important to remember that we all need help sometimes. We may need help with our homework, some problems at work, or even just opening a tight lid. When we ask for help, it shows that we’re not scared to say we need a helping hand.

Starting middle school made me really nervous (紧张的), especially when my best friend, Callie, suddenly joined the popular group. It felt like she left me behind, and I was alone. On the first day, I quickly realized things were different. Callie didn’t sit with me anymore, and I found it difficult to get along with my new classmates.
At lunchtime, I ended up sitting by myself until I met three new girls—Mia, Emma, and Alexis. They were so friendly, and soon, I started feeling more peaceful around them. As the days passed, I spent more time with them, and slowly, school didn’t seem so bad.
One day, we had a great idea: we decided to start a cupcake club! Everyone would add something different to the group. I’ve always loved baking (烘焙), so I was excited to join. Together, we planned to bake cupcakes and sell them to raise money for the school. This means we wanted to collect money by selling the cupcakes.
As time went on, my confidence grew. I realized I didn’t need to be part of the “popular” group to feel happy. Even though Callie and I weren’t as close as we used to be, I was OK with that. I had found new friends who liked me for who I really was.

One day, a farmer named Wang came to his court (法庭), crying, “Your Honor, my best horse is gone! I saw it in my neighbor Zhang’s horse barn (马棚). I know it’s mine because it has a white spot (斑点) on its forehead. But Zhang refuses to return it!”
Judge Li called Zhang, who argued, “This horse has been mine for years. Wang is lying!” The villagers disagreed—some believed Wang, while others trusted Zhang.
To solve the problem, Judge Li ordered the horse to be brought to the courtroom. He covered its head with a cloth and asked both men, “Describe the horse’s eyes in detail.”
Wang said at once, “Its left eye is slightly cloudy because it was hurt last year.” Zhang stopped, then guessed, “Its eyes are big and black, like all healthy horses!”
Judge Li removed the cloth, showing the horse’s cloudy left eye. Zhang’s face turned white. The judge said, “A true owner knows everything of his animal. The horse is Wang’s.”
But the story didn’t end there. A week later, the horse ran away into the mountains. Wang’s son ran after it but broke his leg. The villagers sighed, “What bad luck!” Wang, however, calmly said, “Who knows if this is truly bad luck?”

In children’s eyes, mothers are perfect. In my mind, my mother is good at doing everything except (除了) cooking. I still remember what happened on my father’s birthday when I was young.

Sage Birden, an animal rescuer, said helping animals in need is all about “being kind”. Her animal protection experience in Shanghai began in 2014 after she took care of a friend’s cat. When the cat left, a cat-shaped hole was left in her heart.
As a “proud” member of Shanghai’s animal protection group, Birden remembers one special experience. Volunteers worked together to save a dying kitten in Hangzhou.
“It was midnight, and the man who found the kitten didn’t know what to do. No hospital was open, and there was no vet (兽医) around. There was no way to get the kitten to a safe place, no milk for it. There was nothing.” Birden said.
“But I don’t give up easily.” Birden remembered. She asked other volunteers for help. Then she found a driver and made the driver talk to the man who found the kitten.
After driving for more than four hours at night, the kitten was finally taken to the person who would take care of it.

The next morning, my dad noticed Lucky sitting quietly in the corner. “It’s actually well-behaved (温顺的),” he said. Surprisingly, my parents agreed to keep Lucky until we found its owner if I promised (承诺) to take full responsibility (责任).
Over the next few days, Lucky became part of our family. It followed me everywhere and even learned to follow simple orders like “sit” and “stay.” One day, when I was upset about a math test, Lucky rested its head on my leg. It seemed to understand my feelings.
A week later, we put up “Lost Dog” posters around the neighborhood. No one called. My mom said, “Maybe Lucky was meant to be ours.” I hugged Lucky tightly, feeling thankful for this unexpected friendship.

Passage 2
Last summer, I got the chance to spend a month helping out in a hospital in Rwanda (卢旺达) with my parents. They work for a charity I was interested in studying medicine in the future, so I decided to help in a hospital there for a month. I wanted to see if being a doctor was right for me.
That month changed my life. Rwanda was very different from the UK. People there had difficult lives, but they were always kind and helped each other. They smiled a lot and shared food. I learned that we in the UK sometimes forgot how lucky we were.
In the hospital, my job was hard. I cleaned floors and changed beds every day. Sometimes, I talked to the patients and played games with them. I also asked the doctors about their work. They told me, “Our job is tiring. We work long hours and see sad things. But we love it because we can help our community.” Their words made me want to be a doctor even more.
Now, I have a clear dream. When I finish school, I want to join groups like the Red Cross or Médecins Sans Frontières (a group that helps sick people in many countries). I want to spend my life helping people who really need it. I can’t wait to get started!

Passage 3
Through the cupcake club, I found my own place in middle school. I learned that being true to myself was important. I felt happy and confident, knowing that with the support of my new friends, I could face any problems that came my way.

Passage 5
Long ago in ancient China, there was a wise judge (法官) named Judge Li who was famous for his cleverness.
Soon after, a war broke out, and all young men were called to serve in the army—except Wang’s son, who didn’t have to go because of his injury (受伤). The villagers then understood: what seems like bad luck may turn into something good.

A.To hide the white spot and make the test more difficult.
B.To stop the horse from seeing its owner and running to him.

2.What does the underlined word “removed” in paragraph 5 mean?
A.Covered with. B.Took off. C.Burnt up. D.Light up.

C.By checking the government materials. D.By letting the horse freely choose its owner.
4.Why was Wang not worried about his son’s injury?
A.Because he didn’t truly love his own son.
B.Because he wanted to encourage his son to be strong.
C.Because he believed bad luck could bring good.
D.Because he didn’t care what the villagers thought.
5.What is the main lesson of this story?
A.Always trust the judge’s final decision. B.Good and bad luck often come together.
C.Never disagree with your neighbors. D.Horses are very important animals.

Passage 3
One sunny day, the staff members of a zoo gathered in a small meeting room. Their faces were filled with worry as they were facing a rather difficult problem - the kangaroos were found outside their cage (笼子) again. The head zookeeper, Mr. Brown, cleared his throat and said, “We’ve got to figure this out. How on earth are these kangaroos getting out?” After much discussion, they came to the conclusion that the cage was built too low. A staff member suggested, “Let’s raise (增加) the height of the cage from 1 to 2 meters. That should stop them!” Everyone nodded in approval, and that very afternoon, they got to work.
However, to their great surprise, the next day, the kangaroos were still at large, moving around the zoo as if they owned the place. Mr. Brown was shocked, “How is this possible?” Without hesitation, they decided to raise the cage to 3 meters.
But the following morning, the kangaroos were still freely going about. The staff members were alarmed. They were determined to go to all lengths and do everything possible to solve the problem, and this time, they decided to raise the cage to 10 meters.
Later, a giraffe, who was biting some leaves, struck up a conversation with some kangaroos. The giraffe, with a curious look in its eyes, asked, “Do you think they will go on raising your cage?” One of the kangaroos, with a naughty smile, replied, “Hard to say. If they continue forgetting to close the cage door, they could raise it to a hundred meters, and we would still be out here having an excellent time!”
1.Why did the zoo staff first decide to raise the cage of the kangaroos?
A.Because they realized that the cage was broken.
B.To stop the kangaroos from getting out of the cage.
C.To give the kangaroos more space to move around.
D.Because they worried about the safety of the kangaroos.
2.What does the underlined expression go to all lengths mean?
A.Try one’s best. B.Run a long way.
C.Spend lots of time. D.Find other solutions.
3.What can we learn from the kangaroo’s words in the last paragraph?
A.The zookeepers didn’t check the kangaroos’ cage door.
B.The zookeepers decided to raise the cage to 100 meters.
C.The kangaroos would always find a way to get out of the cage.
D.The kangaroos couldn’t explain how they escaped from the cage.
4.Which of the following would be the best title for this story?
A.The 10-Meter Mistake B.The Disappearing Kangaroos
C.The High-Rising Cage D.The Success of the Zookeepers
5.Which of the following pictures of Chinese idioms best describes the zookeepers’ behavior?
1.B 2.A 3.A 4.C 5.D
根据第一段中的“After much discussion, they came to the conclusion that the cage was built too low. A staff member suggested, ‘Let’s raise (增加) the height of the cage from 1 to 2 meters. That should stop them!’”
根据第三段中的“They were determined to go to all lengths and do everything possible to solve the problem, and this time, they decided to raise the cage to 10 meters.” 由此可推测,go to all lengths意为“竭尽全力,不遗余力”,与Try one’s best意思相近。故选A。
根据最后一段袋鼠的话“If they continue forgetting to close the cage door, they could raise it to a hundred meters, and we would still be out here having an excellent time!” 故选A。

However, everything changed when he joined the school’s stamp club. The club members exchanged stamps from different countries and shared stories about them. Through the club, Tom learned that stamps were not just small pieces of paper but windows to the world.
Over three years, Tom collected over 1,500 stamps from 50 countries. His most treasured one was a Chinese stamp with a giant panda, sent by his pen pal, Li Hua, from Beijing. Tom carefully organized his stamp in thick albums. He even created a map to mark all the countries his stamps came from.
Tom spent weekends at the library reading books about world cultures and famous landmarks. “Stamps teach me geography, history, and even art,” Tom told his teacher. His dream was to organize a school stamp exhibition to inspire others to explore the world.
Last month, Tom’s hard work paid off. With his teacher’s help, he displayed his collection in the school hall.
Over 200 students visited, and Tom proudly explained each stamp’s story. “This hobby opens up the whole world to me,” he said.

Passage 4
One rainy afternoon, I found a small dog trembling (颤抖) under a bench near my house. It looked scared and hungry. I decided to take it home, even though my parents had always said no to pets.
When I showed the dog to my mom, she sighed and said, “We can’t keep it. We’ re too busy to care for a pet.” I begged her to let it stay just for one night. Finally, she agreed.
I named the dog Lucky. I gave it a warm bath and some food. Lucky wagged (摇摆)its tail excitedly, as if thanking me.
Lucky taught me that kindness is a way to connect hearts, even between humans and animals.
