Passage 1 I have way more mental and physical energy to pursue my dreams when I'm calm and well rested. When I’m exhausted and tired out, I struggle through my day, attending to only the essentials. “Taking care of your body and mind — by getting enough sleep, whole foods and movement — sets a foundation in place,” says Dr Swart, “from which you have far greater ability and energy to build your bigger dreams and projects.” Tip 1 __41__ : Try Yoga Nidra, a guided lying-down meditation (冥想), also known as “yogic deep sleep”, which eases you into complete mental and physical relaxation. For me, just 20 minutes in the middle of my day is a game-changer, especially if I haven’t had enough sleep. There are lots of free practices online. My favourite is Richard Miller’s iRest, available on YouTube. CAUTION: While Yoga Nidra can be a great way to relax think twice if you’re feeling physically uncomfortable, as the position may worsen your discomfort. Tip 2 WALK: Take a 35-minute walk, ideally before 8 am. Exposure to bright light first thing improves our mood and increases our energy, as does movement. This is especially important in winter, when lower light levels mean our bodies produce more melatonin (which makes us feel sleepier), as well as less serotonin, a mood-boosting chemical. CAUTION: Walking is not recommended if you’re dealing with an injury or are feeling extremely exhausted, as it might put additional stress on your body. Tip 3 COOK: Visit a farmers’ market and see what you're drawn to — perhaps the orange rounds of tomatoes, or the deep green leaves of kale If you’re not sure what to cook with your purchases, follow your heart, or search online (or the recipes in your cookbooks) for ideas. As you cook, feel the process: it could be the feel of your knife cutting through potatoes, the smell of sausage, or the sight of dark-purple vegetables transformed into a red soup. CAUTION: Cooking is not the best option if you’re feeling rushed or distracted, as it might cause frustration instead of relaxation. Tip 4 CONNECT: Friendship is fundamental to our physical and mental wellbeing. Connect, via phone or in person, with those friends who are your supporters; the ones who believe in you and are cheering for you to realise your dreams. And dare to share these with them. CAUTION: If you’re emotionally drained or needing time to recharge, it might not be the best moment to have deep or demanding conversations. 1. What is the passage mainly intended to do? A. To introduce some useful health products. B. To present four stages of achieving dreams. C. To provide guidance on how to care for ourselves. D. To highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle. 2. Which of the following words best fills in the blank of the passage? A. PRACTICE. B. REST. C. TRAVEL. D. NURSE. 3. John is a customer service manager of a shopping mall. For a whole day, he answered numerous phone calls and rushed to different spots in the mall to handle various emergencies and customer complaints. After a day of work, he felt tired out, hoping to enjoy his own personal life. Which two tips may work for John best? A. Tip 1 and Tip 3. B. Tip 1 and Tip 2. C. Tip 3 and Tip 4. D. Tip 2 and Tip 4. Passage 2 Dan Bilsker PhD (lead Author) Dan is a clinical psychologist who works at Vancouver General Hospital and consults to a mental health research group at the University of British Columbia. Merv Gilbert PhD. Merv is a clinical psychologist working at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital and in private practice in Vancouver. David Worling PhD.   David is a clinical psychologist working in private practice in Vancouver. E. Jane Garland M.D., F.R.C.P. (C) Jane is a psychiatrist with a Mood/Anxiety Disorders Clinic who does research at the University of British Columbia on the treatment of mood problems. Dealing with Depression is based on the experience of the authors and on scientific research about which strategies work best in overcoming depression. Also, because strategies useful for adults may not be useful for adolescents, depressed and non-depressed teens helped in the development of this guide. Dealing with Depression is intended for: * teens with depressed mood * concerned adults who want to help a depressed teen * other teens who want to help a friend or family member This guide is meant to provide teens with accurate information about depression. It is not a psychological or medical treatment, and is not a replacement for treatment where this is needed. If expert assistance or treatment is needed, the services of a competent professional should be sought. Funding for this guide is provided by the Mental Health Evaluation & Community Consultation Unit (MHECCU) of The University of British Columbia through a grant by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, as part of the provincial Child and Youth Mental Health Plan. 1.According to the passage, Dealing with Depression is targeted at ________ . A.researches on depression B.clinical psychologists giving treatment C.adults with depressed mood D.teenagers concerned with mood problems 2.The four cartoon figures are  ________. A.professionals at universities B.natives of British Columbia C.amateur clinical psychologists D.co-authors of Dealing with Depression 3.Which statement is TRUE according to the passage? A.Depressed teens provide accurate information about depression. B.Competent professionals will come to provide services if needed. C.Dealing with Depression receives government financial support. D.Dealing with Depression offers expert assistance and treatment. 4.After reading this page, we can conclude that it is probably ________. A.an advertisement for medicine B.an introduction of a guidebook C.a cartoon about psychologists D.an introduction of a health plan Passage 3 Pickleball is now one of the fastest-growing sports, and it’s tons of fun. It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net at the center. Each end of the court has a kitchen (the non-volley zone; volley is a hit of the ball before it touches the ground). Follow these simple rules and I bet you’ll be out playing doubles pickleball in no time. #2:the ball must bounce once on each side before either team can volley Before any player can hit a shot out of the air, the ball must bounce once on each side. So, if your partner is serving and you start up at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position, because the returning team can hit a shot right at you. If you react with a volley, it’s considered a fault and you’ll lose the point because you don’t let the ball bounce first on your side. (*A point is a unit of scoring that can only be won by the serving team.) #3:each point continues until a fault After the serve, play continues until a rally is won either by someone hitting a winning shot or a fault is committed. A fault ends the rally. In pickleball, there are some basic fault types: The ball lands in the kitchen. The ball lands out of bounds(behind the baseline or outside the sideline). The ball hits the net and falls on your side. The ball bounces twice on one side before the player can return it. (To Be Continued) 1. When your partner is serving, you are not advised to start at the kitchen because ________. A. your opponent is likely to gain a point B. the ball won’t bounce on the other side C. your partner is likely to be hit D. you probably won’t gain a point 2. According to #3,which pictures show faults? A. ①② B. ②③ C. ②④ D. ③④ 3. Where may you find this article? A. In a journal on sports science. B. From a profile of the sports’ inventor. C. At the “How-To” section of a sports website. D. On an official document of sports rule clarification. Passage 4 The ancient Egyptians thought so little of the brain that when a king died, they removed the brain from his body and threw it away. The Egyptians assumed, like many people before and after them, that consciousness — your mind and your thoughts existed in the heart. Now we know that the mind is a product of the brain, but how exactly does this 1.5-kilo piece of matter create a mind that allows you to think about yourself, experience happiness and anger, or remember events that happened 20 minutes or 20 years ago? This isn’t a new question. Today, however, powerful new techniques for visualizing the sources of thought, emotion, behavior, and memory are transforming the way we understand the brain and the mind it creates. Have you ever stopped and thought, “What’s wrong with me today? I just don’t feel like myself”? Perhaps you were more tired or worried than usual — but somehow, you knew that something was different about you. This self-awareness - the ability to think about yourself and how you’re feeling-is an important part of being human. This part of of your mind has its origins in the prefrontal cortex — a region of your brain just behind your forehead that extends to about your ears. Before this area began to function (around age two), you didn’t understand that you were a separate individual with your own identity. As this part of your brain developed, you became more aware of yourself and your thoughts and feelings. Though humans may share certain emotions and recognize them in others, we don’t all have the same emotional response to every situation. In fact, most emotional responses are learned and stored in our memories. The smell of freshly cut grass, for example, will generate happy feelings in someone who spent enjoyable childhood summers in the countryside, but not in someone who was forced to work long hours on a farm. Once an emotional association like this is made, it is very difficult to reverse it. “Emotion is the least flexible part of the brain,” says psychologist Paul Ekman. But we can learn to control our emotions by becoming consciously aware of their underlying causes and by not reacting automatically to things in our environment. For centuries, people have studied the brain, but it is only in recent years that we have really started to learn how it works. Nevertheless, there is still a long way to go before we understand our mind’s many complexities. 1.What is the passage mainly about? A.How we create and control emotions. B.How the mind works. C.How human beings are distinct. D.How emotions are processed. 2.Why does the author mention the ancient Egyptians’ practice in the very beginning? A.To illustrate the importance of the heart in ancient Egyptian culture. B.To introduce the core theme of the mind-body connection and evolution. C.To provide an example of how the brain has been misunderstood throughout history. D.To contrast the ancient Egyptians’ views on the brain with the modern one. 3.Which of the following statement is NOT true? A.Self-awareness develops before the age of two. B.The prefrontal cortex affects a person’s emotions. C.The prefrontal cortex is located at the front of the brain. D.Self-awareness strengthens with the development of the brain. 4.What does the passage suggest about the flexibility of emotions? A.Emotions are universal and do not change over time or with individual experiences. B.Emotions are generally learned and stored in our memories, making them quite flexible. C.Emotions are influenced by our personal experiences and can vary from person to person. D.Emotions are the least flexible part of the mind, and they cannot be controlled. Passage 5 Conventionally, being overweight is bad for health. This may not always be the case. The latest evidence comes from a study in which people classed as overweight, but not extremely fat, had a lower death rate within a certain period than people with a supposedly ideal weight. This suggests that the threshold (阈值) for classifying individuals as overweight may have been set too low. It is uncontroversial that being very heavy is bad for health, but it is unclear at what point health risks begin. Doctors usually ad vise people to lose weight if their Body Mass Index (BMI) is high, which is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters. In most countries, a healthy weight is defined as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Having a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is classed as overweight and 30 and above as extremely fat. Previous research made waves when it found that people whose BMI was somewhat over the “healthy” threshold of 25 may have a slightly lower death rate than slimmer individuals. But many of the studies are fairly old and were done when people were mostly slimmer, and subjects weren’t racially diverse, says Aayush Visaria, a researcher in New Jersey. To address those issues, Visaria tracked the survival of about 500,000 racially diverse US adults of known height and weight for up to 20 years. Having a BMI between 25 and 27.4 carried a 5 percent lower risk of death in this period than a BMI within the healthy category of 22.5 to 24.9. A slightly higher BMI, of 27.5 to 29.9, seemed even better, linked with a 7 percent lower risk of death. One criticism is that the apparent benefit of being overweight could be a misconception, as people who lose weight due to illness are more likely to die. However, in the new research, the pattern persisted even if people who died within two years of entering the study were ruled out from the figures. Visaria says it’s too early to conclude that having an “overweight” BMI outperforms being in the healthy category, because population studies may be prejudiced and lead to misinterpretation of the results. “We aren’t certain if this is truly interpretable,” he says. “A more appropriate message is that BMI isn’t a good indicator of death risk—other factors, like body fat distribution, also play a role.” 1.The purpose of the first paragraph is to ______. A.put forward a controversial issue B.discuss reasons for a lower death rate C.reveal a finding that questions a common belief D.justify the traditional “overweight” threshold 2.According to paragraph 3 and 4, Visaria resolved the limitations of previous research by ______. A.arriving at a more specific finding B.tracking the research for another 20 years C.calming down a wave of criticism from the crowd D.adopting a large, diverse sample over an extended period 3.According to the passage, “the pattern” in paragraph 5 refers to ______. A.the misconception about the benefit of being overweight B.the increased likelihood of death for individuals losing weight due to illness C.the changing perception of BMI classification over time D.the lower risk of death for slightly heavier persons in a set time compared to slimmer ones 4.Which of the following can be inferred from the passage? A.Weight and blood pressure are two primary factors related to BMI. B.To accurately reflect someone’s health risk, a broader view is necessary. C.Visaria will continue to figure out a more scientific BMI threshold. D.Visaria is confident of the reliability of his research. Passage 1 Ostriches versus emus: what’s the difference? Ostriches and emus have much in common. They are both absolutely enormous. At 2.5m tall and weighing 130kg, ostriches are the biggest of all living birds, and emus are close runners up. Besides, both are incapable of flight, with wings that serve only as balancing aids while running. The differences are perhaps not as obvious as you might expect, considering they’ve been evolving independently for about 50 million years. Certainly, their plumage (羽毛) is different. Male ostriches are black-white-and-pink birds, while the slightly smaller females are more uniformly brown. Male and female emus are more similar with shaggy, brown plumage that hangs like a grass-skirt, and a sweep of blue skin on the neck. Should you ever need to identify them from a footprint, an ostrich has two toes on each foot, while an emu has three. And an ostrich’s egg is creamy in colour, while an emu’s is green. (Ostriches lay the biggest eggs of any living bird, though, relative to body size, they are the smallest.) The reproductive lives of both are rather unusual. Among ostriches, many females will lay eggs in a single nest that is tended by a resident pair. And emus avoid sex-role conventions – it’s the females that do the courting (求偶) and the males that do the bulk of the parenting. Ostriches and emus live on different continents (Africa and Australia, respectively). They are, however, closely related. Both are members of a group called the ratites (鸵鸟目), which also includes other large, flightless (and funny) species, such as the rheas of South America and the cassowaries of New Guinea, but also the kiwis of New Zealand, which are much smaller, but no more capable of flight (and no less comical). New Zealand was also once home to the extinct moas, which were only slightly smaller than the elephant birds of Madagascar (also extinct), the biggest birds that have ever lived, at well over 3m tall. Then there are the tinamous of the Americas. On the face of it, these grouse-like birds look nothing like ratites, and yet skeletal and genetic similarities suggest they are the closest living relatives of the moas. Intriguingly, tinamous can fly, which suggests that the other ratites became flightless only after they all went their separate ways. 1. Which of the following is a key physical difference between an ostrich and an emu that could be used for identification? A. The density of their feathering. B. The structure of their wings. C. The number of toes on their feet. D. Their overall height and weight. 2. What can be inferred from the passage about the ability to fly within the ratite group? A. All ratites, including kiwis, have completely lost the ability to fly. B. The tinamous suggest that the common ancestors of ratites could likely fly. C. Moas and elephant birds became extinct because they could not fly. D. Emus and ostriches are the only ratites that use their wings for balancing. 3. Based on the overall passage, what is the author’s main purpose in comparing ostriches and emus? A. To argue that they are more different than they are similar. B. To explain the uniqueness of the group of flightless birds. C. To provide a simple guide for telling the two species apart. D. To detail the evolutionary history that led to their flightlessness. Passage 2 ASK US ANYTHING How do you grow plants in the dark? Plants are crucial to human survival, even when there’s no sunlight. But dealing with darkness is second nature for someone like Howard Levine, chief scientist for NASA’s ISS Research Office. Space might be an extreme example, but enclosed, dark habitats exist on the ground too. Keeping your houseplants alive in windowless rooms or during short winter days can be a challenge. Luckily, there are strategiees to help, even when their sunny source of energy is limited. Mini indoor greenhouses Darkness usually means a decline in natural heat. In Iceland, horticulturist James McDaniel uses geothermal (地热的) heat in his greenhouses to protect his plants. Each of the structures has holes beneath that stretch deep to a pocket of steaming — hot water, he explains. “You can channel that steam into the pipes through the greenhouse and use natural airflow to keep the temperature a set range. “But you don’t need volcanic energy to run a mini indoor greenhouse, which can be as simple as putting a cabinet or shelf together. A heater can add warmth, although you might want to pair it with a dampness regulator to keep from drying your houseplants out. For individual plants, glass covers can trap heat from limited sunlight and also enclose water vapors, which protect plants from the air conditioner in the summer and the heater in the winter. Grow lights Plant grow lights provide an easy and accessible energy boost in dark spaces. These specialized light rays have different features, colors, and prices. LEDs, for instance, are the cheapest and most energy-efficient option, using about a third of the electricity of old lightbulbs. While most devices stick to a warm white band, plants respond differently to various color wavelengths. In Levine’s experiments on Earth, red light worked well for the thin flowering plants Arabidopsis. But in the ISS’s weightless environment, they stretched into funny shapes until he started adding blue lights. Bright surfaces If electricity is a limiting factor, you can try to reflect light with mirrors. Even brightening up your space with white decor, like a light-colored tablecloth, will cast a little glow onto your plants. The makeup of your indoor garden will dictate how much brightness you need to add, Levine explains. Some plants including lettuce and tomatoes need more light than those like Arabidopsis. Therefore, research the plants’ native ranges to learn how much sunshine they’d naturally get. 1. If a gardener is planning to set up a mini indoor greenhouse in a room with limited sunlight, which of the following setups would be most effective for maintaining a suitable environment for plant growth? A. A cabinet with a heater and a dampness regulator. B. A shelf with glass covers for natural airflow. C. A greenhouse with holes connected to a geothermal heat source. D. A greenhouse with steam pipes for controlling volcanic energy. 2. The primary purpose of using grow lights for plants in dark environments is_________ A. to provide additional heat B. to create a decorative effect C. to supply energy through light D. to absorb light using special devices 3. According to the article, which method may work well for reflecting light to help plants grow? A. Using dark-colored tablecloths. B. Painting walls white. C. Replacing lightbulbs with LED lamps. D. Removing mirrors from the garden. Passage 3 Migration is a natural phenomenon observed in species across the animal kingdom. Every year, millions of animals set out on a long journey in search of food, shelter, and mating opportunities. Often traveling thousands of miles, these animals push the limits of endurance. Multigenerational relay Perhaps one of the most famous migrations is the multigenerational round trip of the monarch butterfly. Each year, millions of monarch butterflies leave Canada and fly south to Mexico, where they gather to survive the winter. When spring arrives, the monarchs start their return journey north. The population goes through three to five generations before reaching its destination. The Great Migration Wildebeest take the crown for the most dramatic migration. Wildebeest live in huge groups of over one million individuals, along with thousands of zebras and gazelles. During the dry season, this giant herd (兽群) migrates in search of fresh grass and water. It is a round-trip that spans two countries: Tanzania and Kenya. The herd moves as a great group. Individuals must keep up or risk being hunted by the lions and crocodiles that gather to hunt. Whales on the move Humpback whales are one of the largest animals on Earth, weighing up to 36,000 kilograms. These giants spend their summers at feeding grounds in cold, nutrient-rich waters that support plenty of small fish. In winter, they migrate to warmer waters to raise their young whales and avoid predation (捕食) by killer whales. It is a journey that can take over 8,000 kilometers each way, making it the longest migration of any mammal on Earth. 1. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage? A. A Miracle of Animal Migration B. The Challenges of Animal Migration C. The Struggle for Survival in the Wild D. Incredible Journeys in the Animal World 2. As an animal lover, you can learn ________ from the passage. A. humpback whales travel to cold waters in winter to raise the young B. the wildebeest migration takes place within the borders of Tanzania C. monarch butterflies complete their round-trip migration in a single generation D. the wildebeest herd is often followed by predators such as lions and crocodiles 3. What do the three animals’ migration have in common? A. They all complete their round-trip migration within a year. B. Their migratory behaviors are related to seasonal changes. C. They all overcome lots of difficulties to travel to warmer places. D. Their migrations are primarily to escape from natural predators. Our community is in a low-risk area for strong earthquakes, but small shakes still happen. Here are key steps to protect yourself and your family: Before an earthquake: Prepare an emergency bag. It should have a first-aid kit, a radio (to get news), and some snacks. Keep the bag near your front door—you may need to grab it quickly. Also, talk to your family about a "meeting spot" (like the park next to the community center) in case you get separated. During an earthquake: If you’re indoors, drop to the floor, take cover under a strong table, and hold on until the shaking stops. Do NOT run outside or use elevators—falling objects are dangerous. If you’re outdoors, move to an open area away from buildings and trees. After an earthquake: Check for injuries first. If someone is hurt, use the first-aid kit. Do not touch damaged walls or broken glass. Call the community emergency number (778-4512) if you see gas leaks or fires. Remember: Stay calm—panic can make things worse. By following these steps, we can face earthquakes safely together! 1.What should families decide on to prepare for an earthquake? A. As we mature, experience and schooling teach us useful things, and we get woke. Then, year by year, we slip back into mental weakness. That’s the picture most of us have of intelligence. Unfortunately, it’s stupid. Research reveals that each period of cognitive (认知的) development offers learning strategies as well as balances between opposing strategies. It is that combination of “aha” (when expressing sudden insight)and “duh”(when showing evident stupidity in learning) that actually makes humans truly intelligent. It, in other words, shapes the way we learn, think, judge, find and solve problems. 0-18 months A baby brain forms 1 million new nerve connections each second, helping her to develop emotions, motor skills, attachments, and working memory. At 11 months, she can already form assumptions about how the world works. At 18 months, she has a sense of self. 2-5 years When it comes to learning abstract concepts, preschoolers beat adults. At 4 years old, 66 percent of calories are headed to her brain—fuel for the exploration and creative thinking that define this period. By the time she finishes preschool, her gray matter has increased four times in size. 6-11 years The brain of a 6-year-old has reached 90 percent of its adult size. Weeding out nerve connections speeds up as the brain gets rid of unused connections. The prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) starts to develop more, resulting in longer attention durations, and an increased reliance on language and logic to learn. 12-24 years Adolescence marks a return to the nerve flexibility and plasticity that characterized her preschool years. But she’s not living in a protected context. A reliance on the amygdala—a center for emotions, urges, and instinctive behaviors—might result in trademark “risk-taking. ” 25-59 years By the time she reaches adulthood, prefrontal control is at its peak. A developed frontal part helps her plan for the future and control her urges, but there’s evidence that creativity and mental flexibility takes a big hit. Learning anything surprising? Also a lot harder. 60+years Bring on short-term-memory loss, diseases related to nerve degeneration, and declines in conceptual reasoning. Still, other cognitive abilities continue to grow. Skills involving vocabulary, math and verbal comprehension are among them. 1. The word “It” in paragraph 1 most probably refers to ________. A. humans’ ongoing brain science research B. the mix of intelligence and unintelligence C. the common understanding of intelligence D. humans’ ability to make sensible judgements 2. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage? A. Preschool children aged 2 to 5 have abstract learning abilities close to those of adults. B. A six-year-old’s brain is almost adult-sized with its prefrontal cortex fully developed. C. Adults between 25 and 59 find it much tougher to learn unexpected new knowledge. D. People over 60 experience partial memory loss and constant growth in math skills. 3. Suppose you are a 17-year-old hoping to boost creativity before university. Which of the following schedules would best match your brain’s current features according to the passage? A. Start a gap year to tour three countries along a fixed route. B. Do the same writing drill to improve writing skills each day. C. Join an AI workshop to pilot various original robot projects. D. Take a part-time tutoring job to earn extra money regularly. Passage 2 Fact or Myth? WAKING A SLEEPWALKER IS BAD FOR THEIR HEALTH ① Sleepwalking typically occurs during the non-rapid eye movement stage of sleep. Several factors can lead to walking while sleeping, including alcohol use, stress and even brain injury. However, there is a genetic explanation for sleepwalking. Studies have shown that children with one or both sleepwalking parents are 40 to 60 per cent more likely to sleepwalk themselves. As for the consequences of waking a sleepwalker, there is no evidence that it will hurt or harm him, but will likely cause disorientation and confusion. 61 LYING ON YOUR BACK MAKES YOU SNOREMORE ② Snoring, namely breathing noisily, is caused by airflow being restricted through the body’s airways during sleep. When you lie on your back, gravity pulls tissues that surround your airways downwards, narrowing them. As air passes through the passage through the nose, it causes tissue to vibrate (振动)with every breath and can create a snoring sound. When you sleep on your side this tissue doesn’t move downwards, opening up the airways and reducing the volume of snoring. YOU ONLY USE TEN PERCENT OF YOUR BRAIN ③ This common theory in question dates back to the early 1900s, when the philosopher and founder of American psychology William James suggested that we only use a small portion of our potential. In a 1907 paper titled The Energies of Men, James wrote: “We are making use of only a small part of our possible mental and physical resources.” It’s sustained by a book How to Win Friends and Influence People, where American writer Lowell Thomas wrote that “professor William James of Harvard used to say that the average person develops only ten per cent of his potential mental ability”. 1.Which section of a magazine does this passage probably belong to? A.Educational features. B.Medical science. C.Psychology forum. D.Classified ads. 2.Which of the following pictures best illustrates SNORING SCIENCE? A. B. C. D. 3.Which of the following best fits into the numbered blanks ①—②—③? A.MYTH—FACT—FACT B.FACT—MYTH—FACT C.MYTH—FACT—MYTH D.FACT—MYTH—MYTH Passage 3 What is Generative AI? Artificial Intelligence refers to systems designed to complete specific tasks and has been around for many years. Your smartphone’s facial recognition and virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri all use AI. Generative AI (GenAI), however is a newer technology that generates original content, including text, images, and music, by learning from existing data. Not Asking permission. B. Misinformation. C. Research Assistance. D. Personalized Learning. Passage 4 The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial (冰川的) activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier declined, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea. As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier. The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged (锯齿状的) coastline of Maine keeps watching over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long. For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbor has become a new arts community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds. 1.The large number of small islands along the coast of Maine is the result of ______. A.the drowning of the Maine coastline B.glacier’s forcing mountains into the sea C.the irregularity of the Maine coastline D.ocean water’s flooding the mountain range 2.What does the underlined word “charge” mean in paragraph 2? A.To ask an amount of money. B.To accuse someone publicly of doing something wrong. C.To rush in a particular direction. D.To pass electricity through something. 3.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of paragraph 4 of the selection? A.The wealthy residents of Mt. Desert Island selfishly kept it to themselves. B.Acadia National Park is one of the best national parks. C.On Mt. Desert Island, there is great tension between the residents and tourists. D.Mt. Desert Island supports an incredibly diverse animal and plant life. 4.From the passage, we learn that ________. A.the coastline of Maine is ten times longer after the Ice Age B.there are more than 2,500 islands along the Maine coastline C.Mt. Desert Island has been broken apart by a 7-mile-long water stretch D.an arts community gave way to the summer homes on Mt. However, there are several important details that need to be sorted out before you book your trip. Running into problems during a tour can really affect your vacation experience. Fortunately, travel expert Dilvin Yasa has shared her practical tips for getting the most out of your group tour. Budget Wisely When planning your group tour, budgeting is a key factor, as these trips are usually not all-inclusive. According to Dilvin Yasa, it is crucial to carefully read the itinerary (行程计划) before you book and add up all the extra costs to get the real figure. She said, “Many people assume that the price they see is the total cost, but that’s often not the case.” Extra costs on a group tour might include lunches, dinners, entrance fees to attractions, and additional activities. So, make sure to include these possible expenses in your budget, which will help you avoid any unpleasant surprises later on. Understand the Geography Yasa emphasized the importance of understanding the geography of your tour. She advised against quickly moving between different destinations, as tight schedules might stop you from fully enjoying your trip. “Use Google Maps to see how long you’ll be traveling during each part of the tour.” she suggested. This step is particularly important if you plan to visit multiple destinations within a short period. “Knowing the travel time between stops can help you manage your expectations and ensure you have enough time to enjoy each place,” Yasa explained. Keep Some Cash handy While most of your tour should be paid for before you leave, Yasa emphasized the importance of being prepared for unexpected expenses. When traveling to more remote areas or visiting small food stalls and markets, don’t assume that every place will accept card payments. “Make sure you have some local money with you at all times,” Yasa advised. She also suggested exchanging some money before you leave, so you have it readily available upon arrival. By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable group tour experience. “The key is to be well-prepared and informed,” Yasa concluded. 1. Dilvin Yasa advises tourists to check Google Maps before departure to remind them _________. A. to confirm the distance and travel time between stops B. to find the cheapest transportation to reduce the budget C. to search and list the most popular attractions in advance D. to check the time to visit each spot based on opening hours 2. Preparing local cash is recommended during a group tour, because _________. A. most group tour fees need to be paid in cash B. exchanging money requires high service fees C. it is easier to add up the extra expenses upon arrival D. card payments may not be accepted in small markets 3. Which of the following best states the main purpose of the article? A. To teach travelers how to avoid being cheated on tour. B. To guide readers in drawing up a low-budget tour in advance. C. Snowboarding Snowboarding is a popular winter sport that involves sliding downhill on snow with a snowboard firmly attached to a rider’s feet. The sport is said to have been inspired by surfing, skiing and skateboarding, as an alternative to alpine skiing (高山滑雪).While snowboarding is one of the newer events — first included at the 1998 Winter Olympics, it has become one of the most popular and exciting sports at the Winter Olympics. Ice hockey Ice hockey is a game between two teams who wear skates and compete on an ice rink (溜冰场). Each team usually has six players. Tip 3 COOK: Visit a farmers’ market and see what you're drawn to — perhaps the orange rounds of tomatoes, or the deep green leaves of kale (羽衣甘蓝). If you’re not sure what to cook with your purchases, follow your heart, or search online (or the recipes in your cookbooks) for ideas. 【答案】1. C 2. B 3. 【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C 【导语】这是一篇应用文。本文介绍匹克球这一热门运动的场地特点,重点讲解两项核心规则(双跳后可截击、失误终止回合),助力读者快速掌握双打玩法。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“So, if your partner is serving and you start up at the kitchen, you’re in a dangerous position, because the returning team can hit a shot right at you. (所以,如果对方发球而你却在非击球区附近起身,那你就处于危险境地了,因为对方接球后可以朝你这边直接击球。)”可知,当你的搭档发球时,你不建议从非击球区开始,因为这样你的对手很可能会得分。故选A。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据#3:each point continues until a fault部分“The ball lands in the kitchen. The ball lands out of bounds(behind the baseline or outside the sideline). The ball hits the net and falls on your side. The ball bounces twice on one side before the player can return it. (球落在了非击球区里。球越过了边线(落在底线后或边线外)。球击中了网柱然后落在了你们这一侧。球员在回球前,球在这一侧弹了两次才被回击。)”可知,③④属于失误操作。故选D。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Pickleball is now one of the fastest-growing sports, and it’s tons of fun. It is played on a badminton-sized court with a net at the center. Each end of the court has a kitchen (the non-volley zone; volley is a hit of the ball before it touches the ground). Follow these simple rules and I bet you’ll be out playing doubles pickleball in no time. 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了大脑如何创造意识、情绪及自我认知等心理活动的现代理解与研究进展。 1.主旨大意题。根据全文内容及第二段中“Today, however, powerful new techniques for visualizing the sources of thought, emotion, behavior, and memory are transforming the way we understand the brain and the mind it creates.(然而,如今,用于可视化思维、情感、行为及记忆源头的强大新技术正在彻底改变我们对大脑及其创造的心智的理解)”和最后一段中“For centuries, people have studied the brain, but it is only in recent years that we have really started to learn how it works.(几个世纪以来,人们一直在研究大脑,但直到最近几年,我们才真正开始了解它是如何工作的)”可知,文章主要探讨了大脑如何创造意识以及我们如何控制情绪,B选项“心智是如何工作的”最能概括文章主题。故选B。 2.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Now we know that the mind is a product of the brain, but how exactly does this 1.5-kilo piece of matter create a mind that allows you to think about yourself, experience happiness and anger, or remember events that happened 20 minutes or 20 years ago?(现在我们已经知道,心智是大脑的产物,但这个重约1.5公斤的物质究竟是如何创造出一个能让你思考自我、体验快乐与愤怒,或是回忆起20分钟乃至20年前事件的心智呢?)”可知,作者在开头提到古埃及人处理大脑的方式是为了展示历史上人们对于大脑的误解,以此引出后文对大脑功能的现代理解,引入关于大脑如何创造意识的讨论。故选C。 3.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Before this area began to function (around age two), you didn’t understand that you were a separate individual with your own identity. As this part of your brain developed, you became more aware of yourself and your thoughts and feelings.(在这一区域开始发挥作用之前(大约两岁左右),你并不理解自己是一个拥有独立身份的个体。随着大脑这一部分的发展,你变得对自己、自己的思想和情感更加有意识)”可知,自我意识是在两岁左右开始发展的,而不是之前,A选项的说法是错误的。故选A。 4.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Though humans may share certain emotions and recognize them in others, we don’t all have the same emotional response to every situation. In fact, most emotional responses are learned and stored in our memories.(尽管人类可能共有一些情感,并能在他人身上识别它们,但我们并非对每种情境都有相同的情感反应。事实上,大多数情感反应都是习得的,并存储在我们的记忆中)”及“Once an emotional association like this is made, it is very difficult to reverse it. “Emotion is the least flexible part of the brain,” says psychologist Paul Ekman. . (一旦形成这样的情感联系,就很难逆转。“情感是大脑中最不灵活的部分,”心理学家保罗·埃克曼说)”可知,情绪反应大多源于个人经历并存储于记忆中,且一旦形成很难改变,说明情绪在个体间可能因个人经历而有所不同,且具有相对不灵活性。故选C。 Passage 5 Conventionally, being overweight is bad for health. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.D 4.B 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了最新研究表明,超重但不是特别胖的人在一定时期内的死亡率低于所谓理想体重的人。文章介绍了研究开展的经过以及研究的发现。 1.推理判断题。根据第一段“Conventionally, being overweight is bad for health. This may not always be the case. The latest evidence comes from a study in which people classed as overweight, but not extremely fat, had a lower death rate within a certain period than people with a supposedly ideal weight. This suggests that the threshold (阈值) for classifying individuals as overweight may have been set too low.(一般来说,超重对健康有害。情况可能并非总是如此。最新的证据来自一项研究,该研究表明,超重但不是特别胖的人在一定时期内的死亡率低于所谓理想体重的人。这表明,将个体划分为超重的阈值可能设置得太低了)”可知,第一段的目的是揭示一个对共同信念提出质疑的发现。故选C。 2.细节理解题。根据第三段“But many of the studies are fairly old and were done when people were mostly slimmer, and subjects weren’t racially diverse, says Aayush Visaria, a researcher in New Jersey.(但新泽西州的研究人员Aayush Visaria说,许多研究都是相当古老的,而且是在人们大多比较苗条的时候进行的,而且研究对象的种族也不是多样化的)”和第四段中“To address those issues, Visaria tracked the survival of about 500,000 racially diverse US adults of known height and weight for up to 20 years.(为了解决这些问题,Visaria在长达20年的时间里追踪了大约50万名身高和体重已知的不同种族的美国成年人的生存状况)”可知,Visaria通过在较长时间内采用大量不同的样本,解决了以前研究的局限性。故选D。 3.词句猜测题。根据第二段“In most countries, a healthy weight is defined as a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9. Having a BMI between 25 and 29.9 is classed as overweight and 30 and above as extremely fat.(在大多数国家,健康体重的定义是BMI在18.5到24.9之间。BMI在25到29.9之间被归类为超重,30及以上被归类为极度肥胖)”;倒数第三段“Having a BMI between 25 and 27.4 carried a 5 percent lower risk of death in this period than a BMI within the healthy category of 22.5 to 24.9. A slightly higher BMI, of 27.5 to 29.9, seemed even better, linked with a 7 percent lower risk of death.(在此期间,BMI在25至27.4之间的人的死亡风险比BMI在22.5至24.9之间的健康人群低5%。 根据最后一段“Visaria says it’s too early to conclude that having an “overweight” BMI outperforms being in the healthy category, because population studies may be prejudiced and lead to misinterpretation of the results. “We aren’t certain if this is truly interpretable,” he says. “A more appropriate message is that BMI isn’t a good indicator of death risk—other factors, like body fat distribution, also play a role.”(维萨里亚说,现在下结论说体重指数“超重”的人比健康的人表现更好还为时过早,因为人口研究可能会有偏见,导致对结果的误解。“我们不确定这是否真的可以解释,”他说。“更恰当的信息是,BMI并不是死亡风险的良好指标——其他因素,如体脂分布,也起着作用。”)”可知,为了准确地反映某人的健康风险,一个更广泛的观点是必要的。故选B。 话题2 自然生态 Passage 1 Ostriches versus emus: what’s the difference? 【答案】1. C 2. B 3. B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要对比鸵鸟与鸸鹋的异同,进而介绍鸵鸟目鸟类的特征、演化及近亲物种等相关知识。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Should you ever need to identify them from a footprint, an ostrich has two toes on each foot, while an emu has three. (如果你需要通过脚印来识别它们,鸵鸟每只脚有两个脚趾,而鸸鹋有三个。)”可知,脚的脚趾数量是区分两者的关键生理差异,可用于物种识别。故选C项。 【2题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Intriguingly, tinamous can fly, which suggests that the other ratites became flightless only after they all went their separate ways. 【答案】1. A 2. C 3. B 【导语】这是一篇说明文。介绍了在光线不足环境下种植植物的方法,包括小型室内温室的搭建、生长灯的使用及反光表面的应用等策略。 【1题详解】 细节理解题。根据Mini indoor greenhouses部分“A heater can add warmth, although you might want to pair it with a dampness regulator to keep from drying your houseplants out. (加热器可以增加温度,不过你可能需要搭配一个湿度调节器,以免室内植物干枯)”可知,在光照有限的房间搭建小型室内温室时,配备加热器和湿度调节器的橱柜能维持适宜的温湿度环境。故选A项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据Grow lights部分“Plant grow lights provide an easy and accessible energy boost in dark spaces. (植物生长灯能在阴暗环境中轻松便捷地为植物补充生长所需的能量)”可知,补光灯的核心作用是通过光线为植物提供生长所需的能量。故选C项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Bright surfaces部分“Brightening up your space with white decor, like a light-colored tablecloth, will cast a little glow onto your plants. (用白色装饰,如浅色桌布,提亮空间,会为植物投射少量光线)”可知,将墙壁刷成白色,类似用白色装饰的效果,它能反射光线,帮助植物生长。故选B项。 Passage 3 Migration is a natural phenomenon observed in species across the animal kingdom. 【答案】1. D 2. D 3. B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍动物界普遍存在的迁徙现象,并通过帝王蝶、角马和座头鲸的案例,详细阐述它们各自的迁徙特点与生存意义。 【1题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,根据第一段“Migration is a natural phenomenon observed in species across the animal kingdom. Every year, millions of animals set out on a long journey in search of food, shelter, and mating opportunities. (迁徙是动物界各类物种中普遍存在的自然现象。每年,数百万动物踏上漫长旅程,寻找食物、栖息地和交配机会)”以及表格中的三段分别聚焦三种动物的迁徙旅程,由此可知,“动物世界中令人惊叹的迁徙之旅”可以概括本文的主题,适合作为最佳标题。故选D项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据The Great Migration部分中的“The herd moves as a great group. Individuals must keep up or risk being hunted by the lions and crocodiles that gather to hunt. (兽群以庞大的群体形式迁徙。个体必须跟上队伍,否则就有可能被聚集在此狩猎的狮子和鳄鱼捕食)”可知,角马群迁徙时经常被狮子、鳄鱼等捕食者跟随;根据Whales on the move部分中的“In winter, they migrate to warmer waters to raise their young whales and avoid predation (捕食) by killer whales. (冬季,它们会迁徙到温暖的水域抚育幼鲸,以躲避虎鲸的捕食)”可知,A项“座头鲸冬季前往寒冷水域育幼”与原文不符;根据The Great Migration部分中的“It is a round-trip that spans two countries: Tanzania and Kenya. (这是一次跨越两个国家的往返迁徙:坦桑尼亚和肯尼亚)”可知,B项“角马迁徙仅在坦桑尼亚境内进行”与原文不符;根据第二段中的“The population goes through three to five generations before reaching its destination. (该种群需要经历三到五代才能抵达目的地)”可知,C项“帝王蝶一代就能完成往返迁徙”与原文不符。故选D项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Multigenerational relay部分中的“Each year, millions of monarch butterflies leave Canada and fly south to Mexico, where they gather to survive the winter. When spring arrives, the monarchs start their return journey north. (每年,数百万只帝王蝶离开加拿大,向南飞往墨西哥,在那里聚集越冬。春天来临时,帝王蝶开始向北返回的旅程)”、The Great Migration部分中的“During the dry season, this giant herd (兽群) migrates in search of fresh grass and water. (在旱季,这支庞大的兽群为了寻找新鲜的草地和水源而迁徙)”以及Whales on the move部分中的“These giants spend their summers at feeding grounds in cold, nutrient-rich waters that support plenty of small fish. In winter, they migrate to warmer waters to raise their young whales and avoid predation (捕食) by killer whales. (这些巨兽夏季在寒冷、营养丰富的水域觅食,那里有大量小鱼。冬季,它们迁徙到温暖的水域养育幼鲸,躲避虎鲸的捕食)”可知,三种动物的迁徙均与季节变化(冬季、旱季、夏季)密切相关。故选B项。 Passage 4 Choice of Walks for Beginner and Experienced Walkers The Carlow Autumn Walking Festival is a great opportunity for the beginner, experienced or advanced walker to enjoy the challenges of Carlow’s mountain hikes or the peace of its woodland walks. A. A time to practice first aid B. A meeting spot in case of separation C.A store to buy emergency snacks D. A way to fix damaged walls 2.What can we infer from the text about elevators during an earthquake? A. They are the fastest way to leave buildings B.They are safer than stairs C.They may not work properly and are dangerous D.They can protect people from falling objects 3.The underlined word "panic" in the last paragraph probably means ______. A. calmness B. fear that makes people act without thinking C. careful planning D. hope for safety 4.What is the main purpose of this text? A.To tell residents about the history of earthquakes in the community B.To teach residents how to prepare for and respond to earthquakes C. To ask residents to donate money for earthquake relief D. To introduce the community’s new emergency team 【答案】1.B 2.C 3.B 4.B 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。文章主要讲解对于自然灾害-地震的防范与应对方法。 1.细节理解题。原文 “Before an earthquake” 部分明确提到 “talk to your family about a 'meeting spot'... in case you get separated”,即家庭需约定集合点。故选B项。 2.推理判断题。原文 “During an earthquake” 部分指出 “Do NOT run outside or use elevators—falling objects are dangerous”,虽未直接说明电梯危险的具体原因,但结合地震时设施易故障、存在坠落物的背景可推断:电梯可能因地震无法正常运行,且使用时易受坠落物威胁。故选C项。 3.词义猜测题。“After an earthquake” 部分提到 “Stay calm—panic can make things worse”,“calm”(冷静)与 “panic” 形成反义关系,且 “make things worse”(让情况更糟)暗示 “panic” 是负面情绪。结合常识可知,地震后 “恐慌” 会让人冲动行事,导致不良后果。故选B项。 4.主旨大意题。文章分 “Before an earthquake”“During an earthquake”“After an earthquake” 三部分,分别介绍地震前的准备(应急包、集合点)、地震中的行动(室内躲桌下、室外去空地)、地震后的处理(检查伤势、报险情),核心目的是传授地震防范与应对方法。 话题3 社会服务 Passage 1 1. 【答案】1. B 2. C 3. C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了人类大脑从出生到老年不同阶段的认知发展特点。 【1题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第一段中的“That’s the picture most of us have of intelligence. Unfortunately, it’s stupid. Research reveals that each period of cognitive (认知的) development offers learning strategies as well as balances between opposing strategies. It is that combination of “aha” (when expressing sudden insight)and “duh”(when showing evident stupidity in learning) that actually makes humans truly intelligent.(这是我们大多数人对智力的看法。 根据“25-59 years”部分中的“By the time she reaches adulthood, prefrontal control is at its peak. A developed frontal part helps her plan for the future and control her urges, but there’s evidence that creativity and mental flexibility takes a big hit. Learning anything surprising? Also a lot harder.(当她达到成年时,前额叶控制达到顶峰。发达的前额叶部分帮助她规划未来和控制冲动,但有证据表明,创造力和思维灵活性受到很大打击。学习任何令人惊讶的东西?也难得多了。)”可知,25 - 59岁的成年人发现学习意想不到的新知识要困难得多。故选C项。 【3题详解】 推理判断题。根据“12-24 years”部分中的“Adolescence marks a return to the nerve flexibility and plasticity that characterized her preschool years. But she’s not living in a protected context. A reliance on the amygdala—a center for emotions, urges, and instinctive behaviors—might result in trademark “risk - taking.(青春期标志着神经灵活性和可塑性的回归,这是她学龄前时期的特点。 Passage 2 Fact or Myth? A.MYTH—FACT—FACT B.FACT—MYTH—FACT C.MYTH—FACT—MYTH D.FACT—MYTH—MYTH 【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍三个关于身体的传言并鉴定其真假。 1.推理判断题。由文章第一个方框中“WAKING A SLEEPWALKER IS BAD FOR THEIR HEALTH(叫醒梦游症对他们的健康有害)”;第二方框中“LYING ON YOUR BACK MAKES YOU SNOREMORE(仰卧会使你打鼾更多)”和第三个方框中“YOU ONLY USE TEN PERCENT OF YOUR BRAIN(你只用了你大脑的10%)”可知,这些都是关于身体方面的一些知识,所以可能出现在报纸“医学”版块。故选B项。 2.细节理解题。由文章LYING ON YOUR BACK MAKES YOU SNOREMORE中“When you lie on your back, gravity pulls tissues that surround your airways downwards, narrowing them. As air passes through the passage through the nose, it causes tissue to vibrate (振动)with every breath and can create a snoring sound. (当你仰卧时,重力会将气道周围的组织向下拉,使其变窄。当空气通过鼻子时,它会导致组织随着每次呼吸而振动,并产生打鼾的声音。)”并结合选项可知,D选项图片最好的描述了打鼾的原理。故选D项。 3.推理判断题。由第一方框“As for the consequences of waking a sleepwalker, there is no evidence that it will hurt or harm him, but will likely cause disorientation and confusion.(至于叫醒梦游者的后果,没有证据表明这会伤害或伤害他,但可能会导致定向障碍和混乱。)”可知,第一个传言“WAKING A SLEEPWALKER IS BAD FOR THEIR HEALTH(叫醒梦游者对他们的健康有害)”是不真实的事(MYTH);由第二个方框“When you lie on your back, gravity pulls tissues that surround your airways downwards, narrowing them. As air passes through the passage through the nose, it causes tissue to vibrate (振动)with every breath and can create a snoring sound. (当你仰卧时,重力会将气道周围的组织向下拉,使其变窄。当空气通过鼻子时,它会导致组织随着每次呼吸而振动,并产生打鼾的声音。)”可知,第二个传言“LYING ON YOUR BACK MAKES YOU SNOREMORE(仰卧会使你更容易打鼾)”是事实(FACT);第三个方框中“However, the truth is that your brain is firing on all cylinders(气缸)and not limited to just ten percent of its power.(然而,事实是,你的大脑正在全速运转,而不仅仅局限于10%的能量。)”可知,第三个传言“YOU ONLY USE TEN PERCENT OF YOUR BRAIN(你只使用了大脑的十分之一)”是不真实的事(MYTH)。故选C项。 Passage 3 What is Generative AI? Desert Island 【答案】1.A 2.C 3.D 4.C 【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章先介绍美国缅因州海岸线的地质特点和形成原因,接着着重描述了其中一个最大的岛屿——Mt. Desert岛。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段“This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier declined, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.( 这种不规则性是被称为溺水海岸的结果。 故选A。 2.词句猜测题。根据第二段“As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land.(随着山脉的沉没,海洋水charged了剩余陆地的最低部分)”可知,随着山脉的沉没,海洋水涌入淹没了剩余陆地的最低部分,因此划线词词义为:淹没、(水)冲向某个特定的地方,故选C。 3.主旨大意题。根据第四段内容,特别是“But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones.(但岛上最好的部分是被称为阿卡迪亚国家公园的未受破坏的森林土地。由于该岛位于两个不同地理区域的交界处,公园支持着这两个区域的植物和动物)”可知,本段主要介绍该岛具有极其丰富的动植物多样性。故选D。 4.细节理解题。根据第三段“Mt. Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.(巴港岛几乎形成了两个明显不同的岛屿。它几乎被索姆斯海峡一分为二,这是一条非常深且非常狭窄的七英里长的水域)”可知,岛屿被一段7英里的水域隔开。故选C。 Passage 5 National Science Center Guide We’re excited to have you visit the National Science Centre (NSC). C. To show how preparations can improve a group-tour experience. D. To advise customers on how to file a complaint about unsatisfactory tour. 【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C 【导语】本文是一篇应用文。主要介绍了三条跟团游实用建议,助力游客做好准备,拥有更顺畅愉悦的旅行体验。 【40题详解】 细节理解题。根据Understand the Geography部分第一段“Use Google Maps to see how long you’ll be traveling during each part of the tour. (用谷歌地图查看旅行中每个路段的耗时)”以及第二段“Knowing the travel time between stops can help you manage your expectations (了解各站点间的行程耗时有助于你调整期待值)”可知,查看谷歌地图是为了确认行程各站点间的距离和耗时。故选A。 【41题详解】 细节理解题。根据Keep Some Cash handy部分第一段“When traveling to more remote areas or visiting small food stalls and markets, don’t assume that every place will accept card payments.(前往偏远地区或光顾小型小吃摊和市场时,别想当然地认为所有地方都支持刷卡支付)”可知,准备当地现金是因为小型市场等地可能不接受银行卡支付。故选D。 【42题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Fortunately, travel expert Dilvin Yasa has shared her practical tips for getting the most out of your group tour.(幸运的是,旅行专家迪尔文·亚萨分享了能让跟团游收获最大化的实用建议)”、最后一段“By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable group tour experience.(遵循这些建议,你能拥有更顺畅、更愉悦的跟团游体验)”以及文章内容可知,文章主要介绍了三条跟团游实用建议,主要目的是介绍做好准备能提升跟团游体验的相关建议。故选C。 Passage 2 Four to Follow: Athletes to Watch out for From a US swimming star to French cycling’s “champion of champions”, these four will be on the hunt for medals.
