Passage 5
Protecting Forests: A Key Step in Disaster Prevention
Forests are vital gifts from nature. They provide oxygen, home to thousands of animals and plants, and help control the Earth’s climate. However, in recent years, forest fires—one of the most destructive natural disasters—have become more frequent. These fires not only destroy vast areas of forests but also put human lives at risk, release harmful gases into the air, and worsen global warming. To live in harmony with nature, learning to prevent and deal with forest fires is essential for everyone, especially high school students who will be future protectors of the environment.
What Causes Forest Fires?
Most forest fires have two main causes: natural factors and human activities. Natural causes include lightning strikes, which can ignite dry leaves and branches during hot, dry seasons. However, human activities are responsible for over 70% of forest fires worldwide. Common human-related causes are unattended campfires, discarded cigarette butts, illegal logging (which leaves dry wood in forests), and even accidental sparks from barbecues or fireworks near forest areas.
How Can We Prevent Forest Fires?
Prevention is far more effective than fighting fires after they start. Here are practical steps we can take:
Be careful with fire in forest areas: Never leave a campfire unattended. Before leaving, make sure the fire is completely put out with water or soil. Do not throw cigarette butts on the ground—always put them in designated ashtrays.
Follow forest rules: Obey signs that ban barbecues, fireworks, or campfires in high-risk areas (such as during dry seasons). If you see someone breaking these rules, politely remind them or report it to local forest rangers.
Protect forest health: Healthy forests are more resistant to fires. This means supporting efforts to plant native trees, clean up dry leaves and dead wood regularly, and stop illegal logging. High school students can join school volunteer groups to take part in tree-planting or forest-cleaning activities.
What to Do If You Encounter a Forest Fire?
If you ever see a small forest fire and are sure it’s safe to do so, use a fire extinguisher (if available) or cover the fire with soil to put it out. But if the fire is large and spreading quickly:
Stay calm and do not panic.
Move away from the fire quickly, choosing a path that is upwind (so the wind does not blow the fire toward you) and away from dry grass or trees.
Call the local emergency number (such as 911 in the US or 119 in China) immediately. Tell them the exact location of the fire, its size, and your contact information.
Do not try to fight a large fire alone—leave it to professional firefighters.
Forests are irreplaceable parts of our planet. By understanding the causes of forest fires, taking prevention measures, and knowing how to respond safely, we can protect these precious natural resources. Every small action—like putting out a campfire properly or reporting risky behavior—can make a big difference in keeping our forests safe. Let’s work together to build a world where humans and nature coexist peacefully.
1.Which of the following is a natural cause of forest fires?
A.Unattended campfires B. Lightning strikes
C. Discarded cigarette butts D. Illegal logging
2.What should people do first if they encounter a large, spreading forest fire?
A. Try to put out the fire with soil B. Call the local emergency number
C. Stay calm and move away quickly D. Report it to school volunteer groups
3.Why are healthy forests more resistant to fires?
A. They have more animals to put out fires B. They have fewer dry leaves and dead wood
C. They are always protected by rangers D. They produce more oxygen to stop fires
4.What can high school students do to help prevent forest fires?
A.Ignore signs that ban campfires in high-risk areas B. Leave campfires unattended to save time
C. Join volunteer groups for tree-planting activities D. Use fireworks near forest areas for fun

Passage 2
To the Editors:
I am surprised to read that Dr. Strojnik (“Direct Detection of Exoplanets,” September-October2023) states that we have not yet and cannot directly image exoplanets This is incorrect. NASA/IPAC has a list at exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu/docs/imaging.html.
One example is an image of 51 Eridani b. The planet is 2.6 times as massive as Jupiter and has the same radius (半径).
Gerard Kriss
Space Telescope Science Institute
Dr. Gerard:
I am pleased that my article brought a response. The phrase “planet detection” arouses in people’s imaginations beautiful images of planets that are creative artistic representations of novel worlds. But a blur of brightness is not an image.
Exoplanet researchers routinely call videos such as the one below of 51 Eridani b “direct images” because the planet’s light has been separated from that of its star. “Directly imaged” is the standard language of exoplanet astronomy. But to an optical (光学的) scientist such as myself, there is a strong distinction between direct detection (the planet’s light separated from the light of its star) and direct imaging (a proven picture of the exoplanet). From an optical researcher’s perspective, a single bright spot simply is not an image.
Indeed, even the word “direct” in direct detection is debatable from an optical researcher’s point of view. The detection of the light of the exoplanet requires significant processing, adding multiple images and removing starlight based on theoretical models of the source signal.
But the interpretation of a bright spot as a planet is only possible upon visual inspection and optimistic thinking. As an optical scientist, I cannot look at a single spot and call it an image of exoplanets. A trajectory (轨迹), or a series of bright points, is not an image of a planet, although it very likely represents something that nowadays is described as an exoplanet.
Marija Strojnik
1.________ is the main disagreement between Marija Strojnik and Gerard Kriss.
A.The definition of a planet B.The importance of detecting exoplanets
C.The artistic representation of exoplanets D.The use of the term “direct imaging”
2.How does Dr. Strojnik feel about the interpretation of a bright spot as an exoplanet?
A.She supports it, as it is a common practice in exoplanet astronomy.
B.She approves of it, although it does not provide a clear picture of the exoplanet.
C.She believes it is only possible through visual observation and positive assumption.
D.She considers the interpretation to be debatable, as it requires significant processing.
3.Where can you find these two letters?
A.In the textbook. B.In a local newspaper.
C.In a published essay. D.In a science journal.
Passage 3
When would you say “old age” begins? It’s possible that the closer you think you are to that threshold (起始点), the later you’ll put it, but people’s general perceptions of old age have been changing over time. New research finds that nowadays, we think of old age starting later than we used to — but that trend may not continue forever.
Scientists from Germany, the USA, and Luxembourg analyzed data from over 14,000 individuals participating in a decades-long study called the German Ageing Survey. These participants, born between 1911 and 1974, covering several generations, provided up to eight responses over a 25-year span, when they were aged between 40 and 100.
One of the main questions, and the subject of the new paper, was “At what age would you describe someone as old?”
When they were asked this question at the age of 65, people born in 1911 said that old age begins, on average, at the age of 71. When the question was repeated to people born in 1956 once they also hit 65 years old, they instead put the threshold three years later, at 74.
In a statement, first author Markus Wettstein gave some suggestions as to why this might be: “Life expectancy has increased, which might contribute to a later perceived onset (开始) of old age. Also, some aspects of health have improved over time, so that people of a certain age who were regarded as old in the past may no longer be considered old nowadays.”
The same trend was observed at the individual level too. On average, as each participant aged by four or five years themselves, their estimate for the onset of old age increased by a year.
Women put the threshold for old age about two years later than men on average. There were some other factors that were found to impact someone’s individual estimate too — for example, people in poorer health, who were lonelier, or who “felt” older generally believed old age begins earlier.
“It is unclear to what extent the trend towards postponing old age reflects a trend towards more views on older people and aging, or rather the opposite — perhaps the onset of old age is postponed because people consider being old to be an undesirable state,” Wettstein said.
What’s evident is that this postponement trend won’t last forever. In fact, it’s already slowing down.
The study has some limitations, in that participants were all from one country. The researchers say future studies should seek to address this, as well as examining whether the trend towards postponing the perception of the onset of old age is continuing to decelerate.
1.What is the main finding of the new research mentioned in the article?
A.People’s perceptions of old age have remained constant over time.
B.Improvements in certain health aspects help increase life expectancy.
C.The threshold for considering someone as “old” has been shifting earlier.
D.Nowadays people tend to think of old age as starting later than in the past.
2.Which of the following is TRUE about the research?
A.The 14,000 participants were from Germany, the US, and Luxembourg.
B.The participants provided at most eight responses during the 25-year period.
C.Future studies will explore factors affecting the estimated onset of old age.
D.Some participants cover several generations but are from the same family.
3.Which of the following is NOT included in the postponement trend?
A.Women set the starting point of old age around two years later than men.
B.One’s closeness to this threshold could delay their perception of old age.
C.People’s perception of a later onset of old age justifies delaying retirement.
D.Individuals once labeled as old at a certain age may not be considered so now.
4.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Poorer people generally see old age starting earlier than the wealthier.
B.Postponing the onset of old age reflects a growing respect for the elderly.
C.People may delay the onset of old age because of their negative views of it.
D.Whether the postponement trend is slowing down needs further observation.

By coldfriend January 5, 2025
I love this blanket! I got it as a Christmas gift because everyone knows I’m always so cold. This blanket is so soft and so cozy. I also like how I can walk around with it and still have two hands free because the magnets hold the blanket on my body. I got the wool blanket and I use it all the time when I’m watching TV, doing chores and for taking a nap. I want to get one of the lighter blankets too for slightly warmer weather! I think they’d be great for taking outside on a picnic in the spring, for example.

Passage 2
Natural Disasters
Big waves, huge eruptions and ice-cold winds-these are just a few things that happen naturally and can quickly turn into a disaster! Understanding these disasters can help us stay safe and prepared. Let’s explore some of these natural disasters!
Volcanic Eruption
Think about a mountain with an opening at the top through which hot molten (熔化的) rock, gas, steam, and ash burst (爆发). That’s a volcanic eruption! People living close to volcanoes must always be prepared in case of an eruption. This is so they can get away and stay safe from hot lava running down it. Volcanic eruptions can also help to make new land if it happens under the sea.
Tsunami
Have you ever been to the beach and seen really big waves? Now think about those waves being up to 20 times bigger-that is how big tsunami’s waves can be! These waves are caused by an earthquake that happens under the sea. They are very fast and strong and can wash people and buildings away.
Blizzards
A blizzard is a weather event that includes low temperatures, strong winds and heavy snowfall. These weather conditions result in car accidents and people on foot can get lost. Additionally, these colder temperatures put people at risk of frostbite or hypothermia.
Droughts
When it does not rain for a very very long time, it can cause a drought. In some areas, the soil becomes very dry and even the plants do not have water. This is bad because all living things like plants, people and animals need water to live.
Nature is full of interesting things, and learning about them means we can be prepared if we find ourselves in one of them.
1.What is a volcanic eruption?
A.A mountain covered in deep snow. B.A burst of lava from a mountain.

Passage 3
As midnight approaches in Svalbard, a young polar bear climbs onto an iceberg (冰山) and carves himself a temporary bed before falling asleep. This peaceful moment, capturing the essence of Earth’s delicacy, was taken by Nima Sarikhani, who won Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award, which is decided by public vote.
Sarikhani, from the UK, spent three days searching Norway’s Svalbard islands in the hope of catching sight of these symbolic Arctic (北极的) animals. He was finally rewarded with the sight of both an older and younger male shortly after his ship changed course. Sarikhani seized the chance to take a photo of the younger bear sleeping on the iceberg — a scene that not only awakens the bond between an animal and its habitat, but also the need to act on global challenges like climate change and habitat loss.
These days, the sight of a lone polar bear on melting ice is a familiar symbol of the impact of climate change. But that is for a good reason: global warming is having a particularly rapid effect on the Arctic, which is heating up at a rate three times as high as that of the average around the world. Among those hardest hit are these bears, which are increasingly threatened by the reduction in sea ice cover that they rely on to hunt and raise young.
Though his photo is intended to arouse emotion in those who see it, Sarikhani is optimistic that with the right actions, it isn’t too late for polar bears. The image will be displayed in an exhibition at the Natural History Museum, London, along with the competition’s four runners-up, until 30 June.
1.Sarikhani’s journey in Svalbard can be described as ______.
A.purposeful B.leisurely C.profit-driven D.research-led
2.It can be inferred from paragraph 3 that ______.
A.polar bears are likely to die out
B.the warming of the Arctic just begins
C.sea ice cover is vital for polar bears’ survival
D.polar bears are adapting well to climate change
3.According to the last paragraph, what’s Sarikhani’s hope for the impact of his photo?
A.To arouse people’s sadness for the scene.
B.To motivate people to protect polar bears.
C.To attract more visitors to the Arctic.
D.To boost the popularity of the exhibition.
4.Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A.Svalbard’s quietness: Polar bears’ comfortable zone
B.Arctic adventure: Search for a dramatic landscape
C.Bearing witness: Polar bears’ shelter on melting ice
D.Ice and isolation: A faraway natural wonder
Passage 4
Forests are like Earth’s green lungs—they play a vital role in keeping the planet’s ecosystem healthy. Every year, a single mature tree can absorb about 22 kilograms of carbon dioxide and release enough oxygen to support two people. Beyond regulating the air, forests are also home to over 50% of the world’s land species, from tiny insects to large mammals like gorillas and tigers. However, this precious resource is disappearing fast: according to recent data, around 10 million hectares of forests are cut down globally each year. Most of this destruction, known as deforestation, happens to get wood for furniture and paper, or to clear land for growing crops like soybeans and palm oil.
The effects of deforestation are far-reaching. Take the Amazon Rainforest, often called the “lungs of the planet,” for example. Over the past decade, deforestation there has caused the number of jaguars to drop by 20% and macaws by 30%. These animals lose their natural habitats—places where they live, breed, and find food—and many struggle to survive. Worse still, fewer trees mean less carbon dioxide is taken in, which speeds up global warming. Local Indigenous communities, who have relied on forests for food, medicine, and shelter for centuries, are also losing their way of life.
Luckily, people around the world are taking action to protect forests. More than 100 countries have set up national parks and protected areas where tree-cutting is strictly banned. Some big companies, like major paper producers, now use 80% recycled paper in their products instead of new wood. Schools are also joining in: many organize tree-planting activities and teach students how to reduce paper waste by using digital notes. Even small actions, like recycling a stack of paper or planting a sapling in the community, can help make a difference.
1.What is the main reason for deforestation according to the passage?
A. Natural disasters like fires
B. Cutting trees for wood or farmland
C. Animals destroying forest areas
D. Pollution from factories
2.Which of the following can we infer from the passage?
A. Jaguars and macaws have already disappeared from the Amazon.
B. Deforestation only affects animals in the Amazon Rainforest.
C. Protecting forests can slow down global warming.
D. Indigenous communities no longer need forests for survival.
3.The underlined word “habitats” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. places where animals live
B. types of food animals eat
C. tools animals use to hunt
D. diseases that kill animals
4.What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Amazon Rainforest: A Precious Treasure
B. Deforestation: Causes, Effects and Solutions
C. How to Reduce Paper Waste in Daily Life
D. Why Forests Are Important for Animals.

Passage 2
Cook’s last tour
Until recently Captain James Cook was not a particularly controversial figure. But in January a statue of the 18th-century British explorer was pushed over in Melbourne and the words “The colony will fall” painted on the base. In Hawaii a monument in Cook’s memory has been covered with red paint and the message “You are on native land.” Cook has joined Edward Colston and Cecil Rhodes as a focus of anti-colonialist anger.
Yet Cook was neither a slave trader nor much of an imperialist. He was, first and foremost, a brilliant navigator and mapmaker. Acting under government orders, he undertook three pioneering voyages in the Pacific between 1768 and 1779. His map-making transformed Europeans knowledge of the world’s largest ocean.
An excellent new book draws on Cook’s letters and notebooks to tell the story of his third and final trip. Cook was almost 50 when he set off on HMS Resolution in July 1776. Cook had secret instructions from the government not only to claim new territory for Britain, but to search for a north west passage via the Bering Strait, a task even someone with his navigational experience found impossible.
The author, Hampton Sides, focuses on Cook’s return to Australia and New Zealand — countries the explorer had first encountered almost a decade earlier — his discovery of the Society Islands and his time in Hawaii. It was there, in February 1779, that he was killed after a failed attempt to kidnap a local chief in response to the theft of a longboat.
Cook was a man of his era. He believed Europe would have a civilising influence on many benighted (愚昧无知的) folk in the Pacific. He was cruel when carrying out punishments to his own crew as well as to any native people who opposed him.
At the same time, Cook admired many of the people and places he encountered in the South Pacific. Unlike the Spanish, he had no interest in religious conversion. He tried hard to stop his men from spreading disease. For the most part, his land claims were aimed not at promoting a British empire but preventing grabs by its rivals, France and Spain.
As the author makes clear, there is a balance to be struck between justified admiration for Cook’s seamanship and a justifiable hatred for the colonialism that followed native peoples’ first contact with Europeans. Today many Western countries are divided over how to think about such vexed legacies In 2020 half of Britons thought it was right that Colston’s statue was removed. Cook’s statue still stands in London, as does Rhodes’s in Oxford. The question is whether they will enjoy their high positions much longer.
1.How do the public regard Cook currently?
A.He is nobler than Colston and Rhodes. B.He is not a controversial historic figure.
C.They blame the fall of the colony on him. D.Some people regard Cook as a colonialist.
2.During Cook’s first voyage in the Pacific Ocean, he _________.
A.landed the Society Islands and New Zealand B.commanded a warship called HMS Resolution
C.searched for a route by way of the Bering Strait D.was revenged on a local chief for stealing a boat
3.Cook’s behaviour can be described as ________.
A.patriotic and religious B.well-intentioned and iron-handed
C.charitable and moral D.rebellious and awe-inspiring
4.Which of the following does Hampton Sides, the author of a book on Cook agree with?
A.It is justifiable to remove Colston’s, Cook’s and Rhodes’s statue.
B.Cook mainly aimed to expand domains by grabbing land from Spain.
C.We should view Cook’s adventure and British colonialism objectively.
D.The vexed legacies result from division in whether to remove the statues.

The Best Movies of the Past Years
The Kid
It sometimes seems there’s an invisible force in the universe that we must all love Charlie Chaplin. His character in the movie finds an abandoned baby on the street and takes him home. These two are both a family and a team, held close by genuine joy in one another’s company. When they’re torn apart, it’s heartbreaking; when they’re reunited, it restores our faith in the order of the universe. Like many of Chaplin’s projects, the production of the film was full of humor.
Bicycle Thieves
There are few greater filmwatching experiences than Bicycle Thieves. On Antonio’s first day of work, his bicycle is stolen, and he and his young son Bruno set out to get it back, a quest of desperation and need that at first strengthens the fatherson bond, before nearly tearing it apart. What is even more impressive is that the director used no studio sets — all of the settings are reallife locations in Rome.
The Night of the Shooting Stars
The movie, set in Tuscany, follows a group of citizens who leave their village just before their houses are set to be blown up by the Nazis (纳粹). The story is told through the eyes of sixyearold Cecilia, who sees the event as a great adventure. The movie is a mixture of comedy, fantasy and sorrowful drama.
Let There Be Light
It is a deeply moving documentary that describes, specifically, the effects of wartime trauma (创伤) on soldiers but also, more generally, the way men who have never been encouraged to talk about their feelings must find a way to do so in order to heal.
1.What type of film might The Kid be?
A.History. B.Comedy. C.Romance. D.Science fiction.
2.Which aspect of Bicycle Thieves might impress the audiences most?
A.Its filming spots. B.Its special effects.
C.Its excellent actors. D.Its exciting plot.
3.What do The Night of the Shooting Stars and Let There Be Light have in common?
A.They are of the same type.
B.They have elements of comedy.
C.They have the same shooting angle.
D.They involve the influence of wars.

Passage 1
(You may read the questions first)
Europe’s most beautiful towns Clovelly, the UK
Donkeys (驴) used to be the only way to get up and down the streets of Clovelly, a pretty fishing village in Devon, southwest England.
Today, villagers still haven’t managed to bring cars in because it sits at the bottom of a 400-foot cliff (悬崖) .Goods are transported by man-powered vehicles. If tourists can’t face the walk back up to the car park, they can take a ride in a special car instead.
Dinkelsbühl, Germany
Acute historic center, wood houses and solid towers—Dinkelsbühl has it all. It sits on the German Romantic Road, a route known for its attractive towns.
Surrounded by medieval (中世纪的) walls with a huge church, it was the setting for a famous film named The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser.
Giethoorn, Netherlands
They call it the Dutch answer to Venice, but Giethoorn lacks one thing that the Italian city has: over tourism. As in Venice, life centers around the water. There are no cars in the downtown so the only way to get around is on foot or on the water.
Take a boat tour around the houses sitting on islands. Hungry? Stop at the Michelin-starred restaurant Hollands-Venetië.
Anghiari, Italy
On a hillside, Anghiari is a delight—a tiny walled town. It’s a crowded area with narrow and up-and-down streets, full of grand palaces which were built by the mysterious “men of arms”.
Find out more about them at a museum named the Museo della Battaglia di Anghiari, which traces the history of a medieval battle that took place on the plain outside town.
1.How would tourists probably tour in Clovelly today?
A.By car. B.On foot.
C.By riding a donkey. D.By taking a man-powered vehicle.

Passage 5
The coast of the State of Maine is one of the most irregular in the world. A straight line running from the southernmost coastal city to the northernmost coastal city would measure about 225 miles. If you followed the coastline between these points, you would travel more than ten times as far. This irregularity is the result of what is called a drowned coastline. The term comes from the glacial (冰川的) activity of the Ice Age. At that time, the whole area that is now Maine was part of a mountain range that towered above the sea. As the glacier declined, however, it applied enormous force on those mountains, and they sank into the sea.
As the mountains sank, ocean water charged over the lowest parts of the remaining land. And the highest parts of the former mountain range, nearest the shore, remained as islands. Marine fossils found here are 225 feet above sea level indicating the level of the shoreline prior to the glacier.
The 2,500-mile-long rocky and jagged (锯齿状的) coastline of Maine keeps watching over nearly 2,000 islands. Many of these islands are tiny and uninhabited, but many are home to blooming communities. Mt. Desert Island is one of the largest, most beautiful of the Maine coast islands left behind by the glacier. Measuring 16 miles by 12 miles, Mt. Desert was very nearly formed as two distinct islands. It is split almost in half by Somes Sound, a very deep and very narrow stretch of water seven miles long.
For years, Mt. Desert Island, particularly its major settlement, Bar Harbor, has afforded summer homes for the wealthy. Recently, though, Bar Harbor has become a new arts community as well. But the best part of the island is the unspoiled forest land known as Acadia National Park. Since the island sits on the border between two different geographical zones, the park supports the plants and animals of both zones. It also lies in a major bird migration lane and is a resting spot for many birds.
1.The large number of small islands along the coast of Maine is the result of ______.
A.the drowning of the Maine coastline B.glacier’s forcing mountains into the sea
C.the irregularity of the Maine coastline D.ocean water’s flooding the mountain range
2.What does the underlined word “charge” mean in paragraph 2?
A.To ask an amount of money.
B.To accuse someone publicly of doing something wrong.
C.To rush in a particular direction.
D.To pass electricity through something.
3.Which of the following statements best expresses the main idea of paragraph 4 of the selection?
A.The wealthy residents of Mt. Desert Island selfishly kept it to themselves.
B.Acadia National Park is one of the best national parks.
C.On Mt. Desert Island, there is great tension between the residents and tourists.
D.Mt. Desert Island supports an incredibly diverse animal and plant life.
4.From the passage, we learn that ________.
A.the coastline of Maine is ten times longer after the Ice Age
B.there are more than 2,500 islands along the Maine coastline
C.Mt. Desert Island has been broken apart by a 7-mile-long water stretch
D.an arts community gave way to the summer homes on Mt. Desert Island

根据第二方框第二段中“Exoplanet researchers routinely call videos such as the one below of 51 Eridani b “direct images” because the planet’s light has been separated from that of its star. “Directly imaged” is the standard language of exoplanet astronomy. But to an optical (光学的) scientist such as myself, there is a strong distinction between direct detection (the planet’s light separated from the light of its sta) and direct imaging (a proven picture of the exoplanet).”(系外行星研究人员通常将51 Eridani b的视频称为“直接图像”,因为这颗行星的光线已经与它的恒星分开了。“直接成像”是系外行星天文学的标准语言。但对于像我这样的光学科学家来说,直接探测(行星的光与恒星的光分离)和直接成像()已证实的系外行星的照片)之间有很大的区别。)以及“Indeed, even the word “direct” in direct detection is debatable from an optical researcher’s point of view.”(事实上,从光学研究人员的角度来看,甚至直接探测中的“直接”这个词都是有争议的。)
根据第二方框第四段中“But the interpretation of a bright spot as a planet is only possible upon visual inspection and optimistic thinking. As an optical scientist, I cannot look at a single spot and call it an image of exoplanets.”(但是,只有通过肉眼观察和乐观的思考,才能将亮点解释为行星。

根据文章第一段中的“New research finds that nowadays, we think of old age starting later than we used to — but that trend may not continue forever.(新的研究发现,现在我们认为老年开始的时间比以前晚了,但这种趋势可能不会永远持续下去。)”
根据第二段中的“These participants, born between 1911 and 1974, covering several generations, provided up to eight responses over a 25-year span, when they were aged between 40 and 100. (这些参与者出生于1911年至1974年之间,跨越几代人,在40岁至100岁的25年时间里提供了多达8次回答。)”可知,参与者在25年间最多提供了8次回答。故选B。
3.推理判断题。根据倒数第四段中的“Women put the threshold for old age about two years later than men on average.(女性的老年门槛平均比男性晚两年左右。)” 根据文章第一段“When would you say “old age” begins? It’s possible that the closer you think you are to that threshold (起始点), the later you’ll put it, but people’s general perceptions of old age have been changing over time.(你认为“老年”从什么时候开始?有可能你越认为自己接近这个起始点,你就会越晚提出,但人们对老年的普遍看法一直在随着时间的推移而改变。)”可知,当个人接近他们认为的老年期起点时,他们可能会将这个起点推后,故选项B被提及了。根据文章第五段中的“Also, some aspects of health have improved over time, so that people of a certain age who were regarded as old in the past may no longer be considered old nowadays(此外,随着时间的推移,健康的某些方面也有所改善,因此,过去被认为是老年人的某一年龄的人,现在可能不再被认为是老年人了。”)” C“People’s perception of a later onset of old age justifies delaying retirement.(人们对老年期开始较晚的认识证明了延迟退休是合理的)”并未在文中提及。故选C。
根据倒数第三段““It is unclear to what extent the trend towards postponing old age reflects a trend towards more views on older people and aging, or rather the opposite — perhaps the onset of old age is postponed because people consider being old to be an undesirable state,” Wettstein said.(韦特斯坦说:“目前还不清楚,推迟衰老的趋势在多大程度上反映了人们对老年人和老龄化有更多看法的趋势,或者恰恰相反——也许人们认为老年是一种不受欢迎的状态,所以推迟了老年的到来。”)”

A.A mountain covered in deep snow. B.A burst of lava from a mountain.
C.An earthquake happening under the sea. D.A land newly formed by molten rocks.
2.What can we learn about blizzards?
A.They wash people and buildings away. B.They cause damaging droughts.
C.They make it hard for people to go around. D.They involve dramatically big waves.
3.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To introduce. B.To comment. C.To debate. D.To record.
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A

【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C
根据第二段中“Sarikhani, from the UK, spent three days searching Norway’s Svalbard islands in the hope of catching sight of these symbolic Arctic (北极的) animals.(来自英国的Sarikhani花了三天时间搜索挪威的斯瓦尔巴群岛,希望能看到这些象征性的北极动物。) ”可知,Sarikhani的这次旅行是有目的的,A. purposeful有目的的;B. leisurely不慌不忙的;C. profit-driven利益驱使的;D. research-led以研究为导向的。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Among those hardest hit are these bears, which are increasingly threatened by the reduction in sea ice cover that they rely on to hunt and raise young.(受影响最严重的是这些北极熊,它们赖以狩猎和养育幼崽的海冰覆盖减少,对它们的威胁越来越大。) ”可知,海冰覆盖对于北极熊的生存极其重要,故选C项。
3.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“Though his photo is intended to arouse emotion in those who see it, Sarikhani is optimistic that with the right actions, it isn’t too late for polar bears.(尽管他的照片旨在唤起那些看到它的人的情感,但Sarikhani乐观地认为,只要采取正确的行动,对北极熊来说还为时不晚。) ”可知,Sarikhani的照片旨在激励人行动起来保护北极熊,故选B项。
4.主旨大意题。根据全文内容可知,本文主要通过一幅睡在融化的冰川上的孤独的北极熊的照片,展现出全球气候变暖对生物的影响,以此激励人们行动起来保护北极熊,C项“Bearing witness: Polar bears’ shelter on melting ice(见证:融化的冰川上的北极熊的住所)”符合题意,故选C项。
【答案】1.B 2.C 3.A 4.B
原文第一段提到 “deforestation, happens to get wood... or to clear land for growing crops”,与选项 B “Cutting trees for wood or farmland” 直接对应,需学生快速锁定关键句。故选B项。
原文第二段指出 “fewer trees mean less carbon dioxide is taken in, which speeds up global warming”,反向可推出 “保护森林能减少温室气体,减缓全球变暖”。故选C项。
前文提到森林是动物的 “home”,后文紧接着说动物 “lose their natural habitats”,且括号内补充 “places where they live, breed, and find food”,直接提示 “habitats” 即 “动物的栖息地”。故选A项。

C.“the main of light” (line 5).
D.“beauty’s brow (line 10).
E.“nature’s truth (line 11).
4.In context, the phrase “transfix the flourish” (line 9) is best understood to mean ________.
A.preserve the growth
B.raise the hopes
C.satisfy the desires
D.thwart the ambition
E.diminish the vitality
5.Line 12, “And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow,” is best paraphrased as ________.
A.nature both exalts and mocks human beings
B.everything exists only to be destroyed
C.human accomplishments cannot last
D.external beauty is fleeting but internal beauty persists
E.labor is the only meaningful act of human existence
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.C 4.E 5.B
“Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, So do our minutes hasten to their end (就像波浪扑向那砾石的海滩,人们分分秒秒争相到达那终点)”将海浪涌向海岸的过程比作时间的流逝,表明时间不可逆转;“Nativity, once in the main of light, Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crowned (人在出生时,处在光环中,后来慢慢地成长,到戴上成年的花冠)”提到生命从出生到成熟再到衰老的过程,暗示时间对生命的侵蚀;“Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth (岁月老木了他的青春年华)”和“And delves the parallels in beauty’s brow (美人的面容上深深地刻下了皱纹如堑)”突出了时间的无情;“And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow (没有任何东西,在时光女神的长镰下得以幸免)”用镰刀收割的意象,象征时间对一切存在的毁灭性力量。
根据“Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore, / So do our minutes hasten to their end; / Each changing place with that which goes before, / In sequent toil all forwards do contend (就像波浪扑向那砾石的海滩,人们分分秒秒争相到达那终点;处处变幻随伴着东逝水,奋勇向前,相互竞争,不断连绵)”可知,诗歌开篇将海浪比作时间的流逝,描述海浪不断涌向海岸的过程,体现了时间的不可阻挡。故选A项。
根据“Nativity, once in the main of light, / Crawls to maturity, wherewith being crowned, / Crooked eclipses’ gainst his glory fight, / And Time that gave doth now his gift confound (人在出生时,处在光环中,后来慢慢地成长,到戴上成年的花冠,曲折的岁月黯淡了他的岁月峥嵘,时间的流逝让他的天赋才智黯然)”可知,Crooked eclipses与the main of light紧密相关,日食遮蔽了光明,正如时间遮蔽了生命的光辉与荣耀。
【答案】1.D 2.A 3.B 4.C
根据第一段中“But in January a statue of the 18th-century British explorer was pushed over in Melbourne and the words “The colony will fall” painted on the base. In Hawaii a monument in Cook’s memory has been covered with red paint and the message “You are on native land.” Cook has joined Edward Colston and Cecil Rhodes as a focus of anti-colonialist anger. (但今年1月,这位18世纪英国探险家的雕像在墨尔本被推倒,底座上写着“殖民地将沦陷”的字样。在夏威夷,一座纪念Cook的纪念碑被涂上了红漆,上面写着“你在原住民土地上”。Cook与Edward Colston和Cecil Rhodes一样,成为反殖民主义愤怒的焦点)”可知,目前有些人认为Cook是殖民主义者。故选D项。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段中“The author, Hampton Sides, focuses on Cook’s return to Australia and New Zealand—countries the explorer had first encountered almost a decade earlier—his discovery of the Society Islands and his time in Hawaii. (作者Hampton Sides将重点放在库克回到澳大利亚和新西兰——这位探险家在近10年前第一次遇到这两个国家——他发现了社会群岛,并在夏威夷度过了一段时间)”可知,Cook在太平洋的第一次航行中,登陆了社会群岛和新西兰。故选A项。
根据第五段中“He was cruel when carrying out punishments to his own crew as well as to any native people who opposed him. (他在惩罚自己的船员和任何反对他的土著人时都很残忍)”可知,Cook有残忍的一面;根据第六段中“Unlike the Spanish, he had no interest in religious conversion. He tried hard to stop his men from spreading disease. (与西班牙人不同,他对宗教皈依不感兴趣。他竭力阻止部下传播疾病)”可知,他在航海中也有善意的一面,阻止部下传播疾病。因此,他的行为可以用善意和铁腕来形容。故选B项。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“As the author makes clear, there is a balance to be struck between justified admiration for Cook’s seamanship and a justifiable hatred for the colonialism that followed native peoples’ first contact with Europeans. (正如作者明确指出的那样,在对Cook航海技术的合理钦佩和对原住民与欧洲人第一次接触后出现的殖民主义的合理仇恨之间,需要找到一个平衡)”可推知,该书的作者认为我们应该客观地看待Cook的冒险和英国殖民主义。故选C项。

Guide to Joining Our Community Cultural Festival
Our community will hold a Cultural Festival on Saturday, October 21, to celebrate local traditions and bring neighbors closer. The festival will run from 9 AM to 4 PM at the Community Square—here’s how you can join and enjoy it:
What to do at the festival: There are 3 main activities. First, visit the "Traditional Craft Corner" to watch elders make paper cutting and clay figurines—you can even try making one yourself! Third, don’t miss the "Cultural Show" at 2 PM—students will perform folk dances and sing traditional songs.
Tips for joining: Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll walk around the square. If you want to show your own skills (like playing a traditional instrument), sign up at the community office by October 18. Also, remember to take care of your trash—we want to keep the square clean for everyone.

Passage 5
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D
根据The Kid部分中“Like many of Chaplin’s projects, the production of the film was full of humor.(像卓别林的许多作品一样,这部电影的制作充满了幽默)”可知,电影《寻子遇仙记》可能是喜剧。故选B项。
根据Bicycle Thieves部分中“What is even more impressive is that the director used no studio sets—all of the settings are reallife locations in Rome.(更令人印象深刻的是,导演没有使用工作室布景——所有的场景都是罗马的现实生活中的地点)”可知,《偷自行车的人》这部电影最让观众印象深刻的是它的拍摄地点。故选A项。
The Night of the Shooting Stars部分中“The movie, set in Tuscany, follows a group of citizens who leave their village just before their houses are set to be blown up by the Nazis (纳粹).(这部电影以托斯卡纳为背景,讲述了一群村民在房子即将被纳粹炸毁之前离开村庄的故事)”和Let There Be Light部分中“It is a deeply moving documentary that describes, specifically, the effects of wartime trauma (创伤) on soldiers(这是一部感人至深的纪录片,具体描述了战时创伤对士兵的影响)”可知,《圣洛伦佐之夜》和《上帝说要有光》两部电影的共同之处是它们都涉及了战争的影响。
2.Which of the following are related to medieval history?
A.Clovelly and Dinkelsbühl. B.Clovelly and Giethoorn.
C.Anghiari and Giethoorn. D.Dinkelsbühl and Anghiari.
3.What does the underlined phrase “men of arms” probably mean?
A.artists B.soldiers C.architects D.historians
4.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Tourists can enjoy fishing in both Clovelly and Giethoom.
B.Anghiari is a small and crowded town located on a flat ground.
C.A tourist can watch a film at a huge church in Dinkelsbühl.
D.Giethoorn is a better choice than Venice if tourists prefer a less crowded tour.
根据Clovelly, the UK部分中的第一段“Donkeys (驴) used to be the only way to get up and down the streets of Clovelly, a pretty fishing village in Devon, southwest England.(克洛夫利(Clovelly)是英格兰西南部德文郡的一个美丽渔村,过去,驴子是在街道上往返的唯一交通工具。)”和第二段中“Today, villagers still haven’t managed to bring cars in because it sits at the bottom of a 400-foot cliff (悬崖) . Goods are transported by man-powered vehicles.(如今,村民们仍然无法把汽车开进来,因为它坐落在 400 英尺悬崖的底部。货物由人力车辆运输。)”可知,驴子是过去的交通工具,所以现在人们不再乘坐驴子;人们无法把汽车开进去,所以人们不能乘坐汽车游览Clovelly;人力车辆是运送货物的,不是人乘坐的,该部分最后一句话中“If tourists can’t face the walk back up to the car park, they can take a ride in a special car instead.(如果游客无法步行返回停车场,也可以乘坐特殊车辆。)”
根据Dinkelsbühl, Germany部分中的“Surrounded by medieval (中世纪的) walls with a huge church, it was the setting for a famous film named The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser.(周围环绕着中世纪(罗马)城墙和一座巨大的教堂,这里是著名电影《卡斯帕·豪瑟之谜》的拍摄地。)”和Anghiari, Italy部分中的“Find out more about them at a museum named the Museo della Battaglia di Anghiari, which traces the history of a medieval battle that took place on the plain outside town.(在安吉亚里巴塔利亚博物馆 (Museo della Battaglia di Anghiari) 中了解更多关于他们的信息,该博物馆追溯了发生在城外平原上的中世纪战争的历史。)”
根据划线单词所在句子“On a hillside, Anghiari is a delight—a tiny walled town. It’s a crowded area with narrow and up-and-down streets, full of grand palaces which were built by the mysterious “men of arms”.(安吉亚里 (Anghiari) 位于山坡上,是一座有围墙的小城镇,令人赏心悦目。这是一个拥挤的地区,街道狭窄且上下起伏,到处都是由神秘的“men of arms”建造的宏伟宫殿。)”和划线单词下文“Find out more about them at a museum named the Museo della Battaglia di Anghiari, which traces the history of a medieval battle that took place on the plain outside town.(在安吉亚里巴塔利亚博物馆 (Museo della Battaglia di Anghiari) 中了解更多关于他们的信息,该博物馆追溯了发生在城外平原上的中世纪战争的历史)”可知,them代指画线短语men of arms,安吉亚里巴塔利亚博物馆保存着有关发生在城外平原上的中世纪战争的历史,这些历史记载着“他们”的信息,由此可推知,“them”指的是战争的参与者,即士兵,所以说画线短语men of arms指的是士兵,故选B。
根据Giethoorn, Netherlands部分中的“They call it the Dutch answer to Venice, but Giethoorn lacks one thing that the Italian city has: over tourism. (人们称其为荷兰版的威尼斯,但羊角村缺少意大利城市所拥有的一件事:过度旅游业。)”可知,Giethoorn小镇没有过度旅游,由此可推知,如果游客喜欢不那么拥挤的旅游,那么Giethoorn是比威尼斯更好的选择。故选D。
