Teaching abroad can be daunting at first, taking that step into the unknown. But since I started my TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) journey, I haven’t looked back. It has opened so many doors for me, including working abroad and seeing the world.
I knew I wanted to travel, and that TEFL was the way to make that possible by earning an income along the way. So to get started in this career, I got a TEFL certificate online.
Over the last four years, I have taught at an Italian summer camp, teaching English in Italy and Los Angeles. This gave me so much experience, and if you are interested in short-term work, there are many TEFL summer camps all over the world. They are prepared to help teachers by paying for travel expenses, accommodation and food, and providing a monthly wage. I made so many friends in the TEFL industry by taking this opportunity.
Since then, I have been able to backpack around Southeast Asia by working remotely—teaching my students online. All you need is a laptop and good Wi-Fi! While on my travels, I homeschooled children in Thailand in return for free accommodation, food, and a weekly wage. This career can make travel so accessible.
I knew I wanted to give back to a community along the way. This is when I decided to volunteer at a school in Cambodia, again, in return for free accommodation and meals. This was a very different experience from what I was used to, but I believe it has made me a stronger teacher. I still continue to work with my students in Cambodia monthly over the video call.
Over the last couple of years, I have grown so much as a teacher, and this is all because I said yes to opportunities that came my way.

Engineers in Upstate New York have invented a folded paper device that looks like a decorated art project. But don’t be fooled. This is actually a paper-based battery. No, it doesn’t look like any of those metal batteries running flashlights or smartphones. In these systems, the battery can be printed on a page. The battery’s power consists of living bacteria.
Paper electronics are simple to make and inexpensive, notes study leader Seokheun Choi, an engineer at Binghamton University. They need no electrical outlet to recharge. They just need more bacteria, which can be found everywhere—including dirty water.
“Most batteries use chemicals to generate electricity. Substituting bacteria can be an advantage,” Choi says. “They are cheap and self-repairing.” What paper-based batteries won’t do is generate much power. They do, however, create enough to run small devices in faraway or dangerous places—such as a battlefield. They might also find use in medicine. For instance, they might power tiny sensors, such as the types used to measure blood sugar.
This invention is based on an observation made more than a century ago—that microbes (微生物) produce electricity as they break down food. Scientists refer to the bio-batteries based on this principle as microbial fuel cells(燃料电池). A fuel cell generates electricity like a regular battery. But a regular battery stops producing electricity when its inner chemical reactions stop. A fuel cell uses fuel that can be refilled. In this case, bacteria serve as the fuel. By refilling more microbes, as needed, scientists can keep these fuel cells running.
Lab tests have shown that the new battery can produce a current. Now, Choi and his team are looking at ways to increase the power. They’re studying different shapes and materials for the anode and cathode (正负极). They’re also looking for the best ways to combine batteries for more power. The beauty of the paper devices is that you can simply fold them to connect them. And they surely will be a trend in the near future.
28.What makes the paper-based batteries different from other batteries?
A.They are mainly used to run smartphones.
B.They use bacteria to generate electricity.
C.They are used to decorate small devices.
D.They take a much shorter time to recharge.
29.What can the paper-based batteries do?
A.Power tiny devices.
B.Lower blood sugar levels.
C.Produce much electricity.
D.Change chemicals in the paper.
30.What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The application of the new battery.
B.The characteristics of the paper-based batteries.
C.The intention to invent the device.
D.The working principle of the invention.
31.What is the author’s attitude towards the development of the paper-based batteries?
A.Defensive. B.Optimistic.
C.Doubtful. D.Pessimistic.

To help address the elder care challenge, a team of MIT engineers is looking to robots. They have built and tested the Elderly Bodily Assistance Robot, or E-BAR, a mobile robot designed to physically support the elderly and prevent them from falling as they move around their homes.
The E-BAR acts as a set of robotic handlebars(把手)that follows a person from behind. A user can walk independently or lean on the robot’s arms for support. The robot can support the person’s full weight, lifting them from sitting to standing and the other way round. And the arms of the robot can support them by rapidly inflating(使充气)side airbags if they begin to fall.
With their design, the researchers hope to prevent falls, which today are the leading cause of injury in adults who are 65 and older.
“Many older adults don’t realize the risk of falls and refuse to use walking sticks, which are inconvenient, while others overestimate the risk and may not do exercise, leading to poor mobility,” says Harry Asada, the Ford Professor of Engineering at MIT. “Our aim is to provide older adults having the balance problem with robotic handlebars for holding their body. The handlebars can go anywhere and provide support anytime, whenever they need it,” Asada says. “Elder care conditions can change every few weeks or months. We’d like to provide continuous support as a person’s disability or mobility changes with age.”
At present, the robot is run by remote control. In the future, the team plans to improve the robot’s functionality, allowing it to autonomously follow and physically help a user.
“I think elder care is the next great challenge,” says E-BAR designer Roberto Bolli. “All the data points to a shortage of caregivers, a sharp increase in the elderly population, and a strong desire for elderly people to age in place. We see it not only as an unexplored field in America, but also a naturally interesting challenge for robots.”
32.How does the E-BAR respond if a user begins to fall?
A.It calls a caregiver.
B.It sounds an alarm.
C.It blows up the airbags.
D.It reaches out the handlebars.
33.What’s the feature of the E-BAR Asada stresses?
A.The affordable price. B.The flexible material.
C.The novel appearance. D.The general applicability.
34.What message does Roberto Bolli deliver in the last paragraph?
A.The healthcare system needs to be improved.
B.Social developments change with the times.
C.There will possibly be a huge market for the E-BAR.
D.More research is required to invent robots like the E-BAR.
35.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Role of Robots in Future Life
B.A Robotic Solution to the Elderly Support Problem
C.Ways to Improve Elderly People’s Mobility
D.The Challenges of Elder Care in Modern Society

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Most smartphones allow you to run location-sharing software that uses the phone’s GPS capability to let friends and family know your exact location. There are lots of great uses for this technology. 36 So make sure you’re permitted to use an app or service, and pay attention to how you are using it. Here are some important points you may find helpful.
Choose what’s best for you. Some location-sharing services are games that let you give a shout-out when you’ve turned up at a particular spot. 37 Still others continue to share your location until you change the setting. Be sure you know exactly how your service shares your location.
Know who your friends are. 38 This means people can search to see if you’re online and add you as a friend. It’s important to remember that sharing your location with people you’ve never met in real life is risky, so you should carefully manage friend requests and share your location only with people you know and trust.
39 Some services automatically stop sending your location after a period of time, but others will send it forever—until you stop it. Review your contact list periodically and delete anyone to whom you no longer feel comfortable revealing your location.
Update parents. Location-based services are a great way for teens to let parents know where they are without having to call or text. 40 If you’re heading home late at night, you can also use a service like Glympse to share your location.
A.Check back often.
B.Keep sending your location.
C.However, these services are not for all children.
D.With its help, you can easily share your location with them.
E.These services ease worries so they don’t have to follow your every move.
F.Others show where you are all the time or for a period of time you set.
G.Some location services operate like Facebook, where you can send and accept friend requests.

In 2018, 17-year-old Hemesh spent a life-changing summer with his grandmother Anne, who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease(阿尔茨海默病). Seeing the impact of the disease firsthand, Hemesh awakened to the seriousness of the situation.
One night, Hemesh walked into the kitchen only to discover that his grandmother had left the gas stove (炉) on after making tea. Shocked by the dangerous consequences Alzheimer’s disease could bring about, he couldn’t help but wonder what might have happened if he hadn’t been there.
Hemesh’s worries increased as he observed his grandmother’s behavior. She would wake up in the early hours of the morning, believing she was on a train, and wander outside aimlessly, which could potentially lead her to get lost or put herself in risky situations.
Determined to make a difference, Hemesh was committed to extensive research on Alzheimer’s disease and its symptomatic (症状的) progression. Through his studies, he discovered that wandering was a common problem among dementia patients, especially those with Alzheimer’s disease.
Inspired by his newfound knowledge and fueled by his desire to help, Hemesh told his family, “I can’t just stand by and watch this happen. I need to do something to keep Grandma safe. I think I have an idea that might help not just her, but others in similar situations.”
With firm determination, he developed an inventive answer to the wandering dilemma, a device he called the Guardian Companion. It was a wearable device, similar to a smartwatch, specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients. It integrated advanced GPS technology with a panic button to aid those who tended to wander, ensuring their safety and well-being. After the device got its official permission, Hemesh happily went to try it on for his grandmother.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Good morning, everyone!
The topic of my speech is “Transportation in the Future”.
In the future, the flying car will be widely used in our daily life. Not only is it user-friendly, but it can also help save time. However, every coin has two sides. The flying car is no exception. For example, some people may complain about the noise it makes. In my opinion, technology is just a tool. We should improve related laws and let it serve our life better. This is the end of my speech.
Thank you for listening.
第二节
One possible version:
As Anne put on the Guardian Companion,Hemesh explained how it worked. He reassured her that it would help keep her safe. With a mixture of curiosity and skepticism, Anne agreed to give it a try. The device fit comfortably on her wrist. Hemesh walked his grandmother through the features, showing her how to use the panic button. Anne's eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, and for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt a sense of regained independence.
In the next few weeks, the device made a difference to Anne and her family. Not only did it provide a sense of security for Anne, but it also relieved the constant worries for her loved ones. The device brought peace of mind to the entire family, making them know that Anne was protected even when they couldn't be by her side. Hemesh's creation had truly transformed dementia care, and he found himself on a new mission to make the device accessible to as many people as possible, ensuring that no one had to face the challenges of Alzheimer's disease alone.
