根据第二段“This is a book with a simple storyline. After Daniel finds an egg, he is very curious. What could be inside it? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s probably not the second one! Whatever it is, kids can learn a good amount of vocabulary from this book, especially as it mentions some animals in both languages.(这是一本故事情节简单的书。丹尼尔发现一个鸡蛋后,他非常好奇。里面会有什么?它是一只鸟!这是一架飞机!这可能不是第二个!不管是什么,孩子们都可以从这本书中学到大量的词汇,尤其是它用两种语言提到了一些动物)”可知,丹尼尔的神秘蛋让孩子们的想象力自由发挥。故选B。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“This book follows the narrator (叙述者) on her visits to her grandparents. With her grandparents, she speaks English; but with her mother, she speaks Spanish. She is a Mexican American. There we can see the differences both in the languages and in the ways her grandparents and mother celebrate her birthday.(这本书讲述了叙述者拜访祖父母的故事。和祖父母在一起,她说英语;但她和妈妈说西班牙语。她是墨西哥裔美国人。在那里,我们可以看到语言和她的祖父母和母亲庆祝她生日的方式的差异)”可知,叙述者拜访她的祖父母说明了一些文化差异。故选D。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“It turns ordinary situations into unusual adventures that any child will love to read.(它把普通的情况变成了不寻常的冒险,任何孩子都会喜欢读)”以及最后一段“The book is full of action, and it tells a story children can enjoy from beginning to end.(这本书充满了惊险刺激的活动,它讲述了一个孩子们从头到尾都喜欢的故事)”可知,最后两本书的共同之处在于都有冒险情节。故选A。 B Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed. Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least. “You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.” It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works. Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.” Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit? Trost thinks so. “At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories” she says. And you’ll never be without something to read. 4. Why did BART start the kiosk program? A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use. C. To meet passengers’ needs. D. To reduce its running costs. 5. How are the stories categorized in the kiosk? A. By popularity. B. By length. C. By theme. D. By language. 6. What has Trost been doing recently? A. Organizing a story contest. B. Doing a survey of customers. C. Choosing a print publisher. D. Conducting interviews with artists. 7. What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future? A. It will close down. B. Its profits will decline. C. It will expand nationwide. D. Its ridership will increase. C 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第三段““You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit - known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.”(旧金山湾区捷运系统(BART)首席通讯官Alicia Trost表示:“你进入检票口,会看到一个亮着灯的信息亭,它告诉你可以得到一分钟、三分钟或五分钟的报道。你可以选择你想要的长度,它会给你一个类似收据的短篇故事。”)”可知,BART启动信息亭是为了满足乘客在乘车过程中的阅读需求,为他们提供不同长度的短篇故事或诗歌来打发时间。故选C项。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.(你可以选择你想要的长度,它会给你一个类似收据的短篇故事)”可知,信息亭中的故事按长度分类,乘客可以根据自己的需求选择不同长度的故事。 根据第五段“We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,(我们想做一些事情,呼吁湾区的艺术家为比赛提交故事)”以及第六段“The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.(获奖故事会进入我们的书报亭,然后你就会成为一名出版艺术家)”可知,Trost最近在组织一个故事竞赛,向湾区的艺术家征集故事,获胜作品将被放入书报亭供乘客阅读。故选A项。 根据倒数第二段““At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says.(她说:“归根结底,所有的交通机构现在都在尽一切努力改善乘客体验。所以我绝对认为,我们会因为短篇小说而吸引更多的乘客。”)”可知,Trost认为通过提升乘客体验,包括提供短篇故事阅读服务,BART可以吸引更多的乘客,乘客量将会增加。故选D项。 C Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. Many smaller communities, especially those that have never experienced floods before, lack the tools they need to detect (监测) and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling to face the full force of flooding. To help protect these communities, the National Space Agency (NSA) has partnered with several leading scientific groups to develop a new flood detection tool called “Model of Models” (MoM) . This tool combines data from open-source hydrological (水文的) models with Earth observing satellite data to produce global flood risk level updates several times a day. When the MoM detects a high probability of flooding in an area, it sends a flood early warning to affected communities, letting them quickly take the necessary steps to save lives and belongings. “This new technology covers the face of the globe, enabling us to observe flood risk and predict the chance of floods in ways never before possible,” said Dr. Shan Clain, Manager for NSA’s Earth Science Applied Sciences Program. “The technology we’ve developed will make a huge difference, enabling early action by communities around the globe — especially small island communities and developing countries that lack the necessary early warning information to protect themselves and their loved ones during flood events.” MoM will be a game changer. Until now, full global flood early warnings have not been possible, either due to limitations in hydrologic monitoring networks, prediction models, or the professional knowledge to operate and widely share their results, especially in small and underdeveloped countries. Oma Sam, a director at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said: “Effective early warning information is shown to save lives. However, traditional flood early warning has so far been expensive and requires local funding, resources, knowledge as well as regular care. I am looking forward to helping NSA provide this powerful MoM to all communities so that early warnings can reach the last mile.” 8. What can we learn about MoM from paragraph 2? A. It sends early warnings several times a day. B. It frequently updates global flood risk levels. C. It is specially for flood-affected communities. D. It relies on human observation to detect floods. 9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about MoM? A. Its operational steps. B. Its development history. C. Its value and effect. D. Its technology progress. 10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Early warning information is enough to save lives. B. MoM has been provided to all the communities now. C. MoM is expected to beat some past system limitations. D. MoM is well-received in small developing countries. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A MoM: A Breakthrough in Global Flood Early Warning. B. NSA: A Partner of Small Communities in Flood Rescue. C. MoM Saves Small Communities From Flood Disasters. D. NSA Leads the Improvement of Flood Detection Tools. 8. B 9. C 10. C 11. However, traditional flood early warning has so far been expensive and requires local funding, resources, knowledge as well as regular care. I am looking forward to helping NSA provide this powerful MoM to all communities so that early warnings can reach the last mile.”(国际红十字会与红新月会联合会主任Oma Sam说:“有效的预警信息可以拯救生命。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. Many smaller communities, especially those that have never experienced floods before, lack the tools they need to detect (监测) and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling to face the full force of flooding.(洪水是世界上最具破坏力和破坏性的灾难之一。 和第二段“To help protect these communities, the National Space Agency (NSA) has partnered with several leading scientific groups to develop a new flood detection tool called “Model of Models” (MoM).(为了帮助保护这些社区,美国国家航天局(NSA)与几个领先的科研团队合作开发了一种名为“模型集合”(MoM)的新型洪水检测工具。)” A。 D People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a substantial number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy. According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass. This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s and later named “Peto’s paradox”. Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.” 12. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They have a rather large body size. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing. 13. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass. C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage. 14. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in Paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. Larger animals have protection from TP53. B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes. C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones. D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have. 15. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people. C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients. D 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第二段“A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a substantial number of genes that stop tumors developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species, including humans, only carry one copy.(芝加哥大学的一个研究小组发现,大象携带大量阻止肿瘤生长的基因。 根据第四段中的““An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch told The Guardian. 故选A项。 根据第四段“If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass.(如果每个活细胞都有同样的癌变机会,那么像鲸鱼和大象这样寿命长的大型生物患癌症的风险应该比人类和老鼠更高。 根据最后一段““Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist at the School of Medicine, the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.(“大自然已经找到了预防癌症的方法,”犹他大学医学院的生物学家约书亚·施夫曼(Joshua Schiffman)说。“我们该去了解不同动物是如何应对这个问题的,从而利用这些策略来预防人类的癌症。”)”以及前文提到大象体内TP53基因的作用可知,人类有望通过对TP53基因的研究来预防癌症。故选C项。 第一节(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分) 阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。 Whoobie was the smartest dog I have ever known. Here is a list of bilingual (双语的) books for them. Keep in mind that different kids require different books depending on their own reading level. DANIEL’S MYSTERY EGG This is a book with a simple storyline. After Daniel finds an egg, he is very curious. What could be inside it? It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s probably not the second one! Whatever it is, kids can learn a good amount of vocabulary from this book, especially as it mentions some animals in both languages. I LOVE SATURDAYS Y DOMINGOS This book follows the narrator (叙述者) on her visits to her grandparents. With her grandparents, she speaks English; but with her mother, she speaks Spanish. She is a Mexican American. There we can see the differences both in the languages and in the ways her grandparents and mother celebrate her birthday. This is families and the thing they all share: their love for their loved ones. UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS This short book has six stories that show different plots (情节) like strange neighbors and mystical science projects. It turns ordinary situations into unusual adventures that any child will love to read. All stories celebrate strong relationships with people, whether they are friends, family, or teachers. The stories have some pictures which help kids form a mental picture of the story. MAXIMILIAN & THE MYSTERY OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL This book follows an 11-year-old wrestling (摔跤) lover who one day discovers his connection to a famous wrestler called the Guardian Angel. It does have pictures, but they don’t contribute much to the story. The book is full of action, and it tells a story children can enjoy from beginning to end. 1. What can we say about DANIEL’S MYSTERY EGG? A. It follows the changes of an egg. B. It lets kids’ imagination run wild. C It focuses on kids’ colorful school life. D. It teaches kids to be friendly to animals. 2. What do the narrator’s visits to her grandparents show? A. Her poor relationships with her family. B. The difficulty in communication. C. Her family’s long history. D. Some cultural differences. 3. What do the last two books have in common? A. They both include adventurous plots. B. They both use pictures to attract kids. C. They both help improve kids’ science knowledge. D. They both have interesting and talented leading roles. B Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says. And you’ll never be without something to read. 4. Why did BART start the kiosk program? A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use. C To meet passengers’ needs. C Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. A. MoM: A Breakthrough in Global Flood Early Warning. B. NSA: A Partner of Small Communities in Flood Rescue. C. MoM Saves Small Communities From Flood Disasters. D. NSA Leads the Improvement of Flood Detection Tools. D People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though they have lifespans that are similar to humans, living for around 50 to 70 years. C Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones. D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have. 15. What can be concluded from the passage? A Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people. C. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. D The extra copies of elephants’ genes are used to cure cancer patients. Whoobie was the smartest dog I have ever known.
