The Thackray Museum of Medicine in Leeds has recently undergone a major renovation, offering visitors a vivid dive into medical history. Its highlight is a life-sized Victorian street scene, complete with authentic smells and historical details. The museum also showcases the devastating impacts of once-deadly infectious diseases like cholera and smallpox — diseases that were widespread long before the invention of vaccines. Beyond exhibitions, there are engaging talks, interactive displays and fun games, as well as introductions to the remarkable health heroes who dedicated their lives to fighting diseases over the centuries.

A Tribute to Railway and Fire History, Walthamstow, London
Tucked away in Walthamstow, the Walthamstow Pumphouse Museum is a small gem combining indoor and outdoor exhibits, perfect for young history and machine lovers. A massive steam engine stands proudly at the entrance, immediately catching the eye. Inside, two 1967 Victoria Line train carriages are on show, with their driver’s cabs open for kids who dream of being train drivers to explore. The museum also features Fireman Frank’s display, which includes a classic fire engine that starred in popular TV shows such as London’s Burning.

It presents a unique glimpse of what Edinburgh looked like in the past, with stunning views and historical insights. Spanning five floors, the museum houses more than 100 fully interactive exhibits — and there are no “do not touch” signs anywhere, making it incredibly kid-friendly. The perspective room is a particular hit: young visitors can dance with their own shadows, match their faces with a monkey’s in a fun optical trick, pretend to serve their head on a plate and even lie on a life-sized shark model, all through amazing visual illusions.
Admission: Adults £16; Children (5-15) £12; Under 5s free.
A Step Back into Ancient Rural Life, Chichester, West Sussex

It has over 50 historic rural buildings, dating from early medieval England all the way to the Victorian era, all preserved and restored to their original condition. Silver Spring, Maryland is a center for immigrants (移民) and refugees. Manuel Vera, now known as the “Bike Dude”, found some unique and creative ways to support his community.
At first, Manuel Vera just wanted to do something productive during the COVID-19 lockdown (封锁). So he offered to fix people’s bikes for free in his neighborhood.
“Then I started thinking about all the bikes people have at home that never get used,” says Vera, 74, who is retired from the local power company. Soon he asked neighbors to donate bikes collecting dust after kids had outgrown them or adults had upgraded to new models. Then, in his tidy little backyard shed, he’d get to work. Since space is so tight, Vera prefers to work alone though not for lack of volunteers.
Vera repairs the bikes and gives them away at parks with a “Free Bikes” sign. Then he pairs people up with the perfect new ride and watches them pedal away happily. His first giveaway saw six bikes go in under 30 minutes.
But Vera wanted to reach those who needed help the most. Making life better, one bike at a time. In addition to helping the adults and kids he meets at his Free Bikes events, eager customers also come from local resettlement agencies. The agencies provide Vera with the height, gender and age of a rider, and he delivers a fitting bicycle to their door. He’s happy to make the trip.
Vera recalls that an Afghan man needed a way to get to his new job as a night security guard. Vera provided him with not only a bike and helmet but also lights and a reflective vest. Lbrahim Alashe’s new bike cuts his travel time in half.
“When I sought bicycles, it was very expensive, so when he does this for people, it makes them so happy,” says Alashe. “It was one of my dreams to get a bicycle. So it’s very good.”
So far, his simple offer to repair bikes has grown into an engine of kindness, providing wheels to over 700 people and fueling the entire community.
4. What did Manuel Vera first offer to do for his neighbors?
A. Donate bicycles to refugees. B. Fix their bikes without charge.
C. Collect unused bikes from them. D. Teach bike repair skills online.
5. Why did Vera choose to help people through resettlement agencies?
A. To get more volunteers for his small shed. B. To earn a reputation as a community leader.
C. Because giving bikes in parks was not successful. D. To help people with the greatest needs more directly.
6. Which words best describe Manual Vera?
A. Strict and serious. B. Kind and thoughtful.
C. Shy and quiet. D. Ambitious and proud.
7. What does the story mainly tell us?
A. How bicycle recycling benefits the environment.
B. How a retired man spent his time during the lockdown.
C. How a small act of kindness can power a community.
D. How immigrants face challenges in Silver Spring, Maryland.
C
In 2012, an iPhone fell into my hands. This smart technology seemed like the entrance to only fun and positive things like chatting with friends and blogging.
However, seven years later, I had become horribly limited to it. Recent reports show that I’m not alone. According to a study, the average American spends five hours a day on smart devices and about 2.5 of those hours are spent on social, messaging, media and entertainment apps.
It’s hard to explain when the love and joy I felt for my iPhone turned into a dependency. I fell asleep to my phone every night and woke to it each morning. I checked the weather app every morning before I chose how to dress for the day. I used it to help me find my way through a city I should know well enough on my own. I updated my email box every time I picked my phone up.
Just like with any addiction, my phone dependency began to influence my life. While spending time with family, I’d stare into a small screen on my lap instead of being involved in communicating with my loved ones. At work, my productivity levels dropped. And then, my four-year relationship came to an end. Eventually, I was left with years of memories and a mobile phone that couldn’t provide enjoyable company across a dinner table, share in the joys of experiencing a concert or kiss me goodnight before bed.
Now, I move through life with more purpose and intention. I’ve cut back on carelessly giving away my limited time and attention to my phone. Instead, I focus my efforts on being as present as possible. Truly training the mind to stay present is a long and challenging road, but it’s important to start somewhere.
I hope you’ll take a deep look at your own phone habits and reevaluate how important a role you are letting it play in your life. Whether or not you’ve reached a place in your life where your screen time feels problematic, there’s no harm in mindfully giving your current practices some thought.
8. What does the author mean by saying “I’m not alone” underlined in Paragraph 2?
A. He takes his iPhone for company. B. He has many friends around him.
C. There’re many Americans like him. D. Blogging brings him great pleasure.
9. According to Paragraph 3, the author_________.
A. was quite confused about some apps B. became hopelessly addicted to his iPhone
C. was afraid of spending more time on his iPhone D. never dressed himself by checking the weather app
10. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. Why the author’s productivity levels dropped. B. Why the author finally had phone dependency.
C. How the author bravely corrected his mistakes. D. How the author’s life was negatively affected.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Persuade people to live a no-phone life.
B. Advise people to use their phones reasonably.
C. Inspire people to consider their roles in life again.
D. Urge people to devote their spare time to screens.
D
For years, we’ve been teaching a class on music and the mind. At the start of each semester, we asked the students to complete a survey on their favorite songs and artists. Students’ favorite songs and artists get longer and more varied each year and their playlists barely overlap (重叠).
Indeed, listening to music is a deeply private and personal experience nowadays and even more so with the introduction of the iPhone and smartphones. When teenagers listen to music via streaming, artificial intelligence and social media platforms team up to suggest personalized playlists for them.
Some young people feel that AI generated (playlists make them exposed to something uninteresting. Their playlists are populated with songs and artists they’ve never heard of before, yet they all sound similar. In the past, they might not have noticed such a situation. Their musical consumption was dominated (占主导) by the “Top-40” artists. However, AI-generated playlists have changed this, since a wider range of music is available.
Furthermore, if they think their AI influenced playlists are unappealing, they still have the ability to search for new music just because AI doesn’t prevent them researching and discovering music on their own. Anything that exists, they can find. The store is always open.
As young people transition (过渡) from childhood to adulthood with various styles of music, two seemingly opposing processes become essential — forming a unique identity while becoming part of a community. Music listening and preferences play an important role in it and AI generated playlists may have the potential to challenge this transition.
Fears of new technologies are common. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion. Will 50 million Americans ever again watch the series ending of a TV show, as they did for Friends in 2004? And will AI make it easier to differentiate the self, but harder to bond with others?
12. What do we know about students’ favorite playlists from the survey?
A. Their musical tastes have become increasingly diverse.
B. They have lost interest in music recommended by AI.
C. They prefer to listen to music together with others.
D. Their playlists are dominated by the “Top-40” artists.
13. Why do some young people dislike AI generated playlists?
A. The playlists are not updated in time.
B. The music in the playlists is hard to find.
C. The music in the playlists sounds alike.
D. The playlists lack personalized elements.
14. Which may the author agree with regarding young people’s transition to adulthood?
A. Listening to music has little effect on social bonding.
B. Young people should avoid using AI generated playlists.
C. Music preferences stop the development of personal identity.
D. Forming a unique identity and joining a community are both vital.
15. Why does the author mention the TV series Friends in the text?
A. To stress the power of traditional media.
B. To introduce a popular TV show to readers.
C. To show the potential social influence of AI.
D. To compare the current expression with past ones.

Vera recalls that an Afghan man needed a way to get to his new job as a night security guard Vera provided him with not only a bike and helmet but also lights and a reflective vest.
A How bicycle recycling benefits the environment.
B. How a retired man spent his time during the lockdown.

A. was quite confused about some apps B. became hopelessly addicted to his iPhone
C. was afraid of spending more time on his iPhone D. never dressed himself by checking the weather app
A Persuade people to live a no-phone life.
B. Advise people to use their phones reasonably.
C. Inspire people to consider their roles in life again.
D. Urge people to devote their spare time to screens.

【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. C

【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Fears of new technologies are common. For example, the decline of scheduled network TV erased lots of common ground for discussion.
