Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
With graduation drawing near, I have to make some decisions about my future.Do I want to spend another four years studying at university? Am I ready for the world of work? The only thing that's clear to me is that my vague dreams of making films or singing in a band are becoming more and more unlikely. It's probably nothing unusual, but I've just come to the realization that, although I'm good at lots of things as an ordinary girl, I'm not brilliant at anything.
My parents, trying desperately not to influence my choice, have so far offered limited guidance. My dad, who went into construction straight from school and doesn't regret a thing, talks about being passionate about whatever you do.My mom, a teacher, holds the same view. However, on balance, she feels that qualifications gave her more options when she was ready to decide.
Most of my friends seem to be in the same position as me.One or two have decided on degrees in medicine or law.Six months ago we might have laughed at them.Saving someone's life in an operating theater or giving speeches in a court seemed so grown-up! Now I'm actually jealous of their plans.Forgetting about the hard work for the moment, their futures are more or less decided: a degree, training and then work.In ten years, they'll all have respectable careers.
But what about me? Well, I've been writing this blog for a year now and some of you seem to enjoy reading my posts.Perhaps journalism is my “thing”.I've already applied to several local newspapers for some work experience and I was able to use this website as useful proof that journalism isn't just a sudden idea I've had.No replies as yet, but I'm hopeful. It's a competitive industry, I know, so I'd have to do some more studying first.I've been researching relevant courses, though the thought of borrowing thousands to pay for a full degree is depressing. However, a realistic approach to my future is good progress, I feel.

Early in my career, I was easily overwhelmed. My responsibilities, commitments and ambitions piled up into this mass that I felt immeasurably large — until, one day, when I worked in international projects contracting, my manager gave me something that is still on the bulletin board over my desk 26 years later, even as I've now transformed my career. It's a postcard picture of Earth.
He wanted me to look at Earth and think about the significance of what I was trying to accomplish, and the stress I was feeling, and to do so in the context of what others around the world faced. I started to do this during late nights in my office, when I hadn't seen my family in days, as I lived on caffeine and cheese nabs. I imagined the good happening to people around the globe. I also imagined the bad — people starving, enduring war, or losing their homes — and then weighed my situation. I would remember that my time on Earth was limited.
With this perspective and my manager's encouragement, I went back to school, then took a job with a Fortune 500 firm as a contracts manager and rose to become a director and VP. I have recently started my own consulting business to mentor small companies entering international projects contracting. I've found that many folks feel they must make a good impression or prove themselves, and that to do so, they cannot admit when they need help. But I can see it in their eyes or hear it in their voices. I tell them what my manager told me: Step away for a few minutes, prioritize your actions, and focus on what your best can be in that moment.
That is how I hope to make a difference in their lives. And who knows, maybe beyond what I see, my presence ripples (传开) out to their circles of influence, which reaches others' — creating waves again to those that make up all that blue in my picture of Earth.

We spend a third of our adult lives working and another big part preparing for our careers.Historically, work was rarely seen as a source of meaning and purpose.During the vast majority of our 300,000-year human evolution (进化), work was in fact pretty simple. We worked to eat and avoid being eaten.Meaning and purpose came from somewhere else, like spirituality, art, or science.
The idea that we are meant to find meaning at work or to find work meaningful — is a rather modern, if not postmodern, invention.Only one hundred years ago it would have been frequent to see a worker who returned from a typical workday at a factory complain to their folks that they didn't earn much or they were worn out and rare to see that they complain they didn't experience a sense of purpose.
Similarly, the idea that we ought to bring our “whole self” to work is a pretty novel and recent form of career advice. Its origins can be traced to William Kahn who invented the concept of employee engagement 30 years ago.His point was that employees differ in the degree to which they identify with their work role. Some see work as merely a job and clock in and out every day, without bringing their whole self to work.Work is just not a core aspect of their identity, and their concept of themselves is built on other social categories like mother, husband, American, captain of the local soccer team, etc.
Others, however, have very low psychological distance with their work role, seeing it as essentially intertwined (交融的) with who they are. They don't just come to work; they are fully devoted to their careers and have a spiritual type of connection with their jobs. They are, it seems, almost possessed by work and are the type of workaholics (工作狂) most companies long for.

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
__13__.If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is not a bad way to go, of course, but you can't always make money doing things you like (like video games). And sometimes things you like are better as hobbies.
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn't sound so bad.Maybe a doctor, engineer or lawyer? Or maybe that's out of your educational reach, so you choose office or retail worker.__14__, but often they are not something you're really passionate about. It's kind of like just doing something because it's there.
However, there's another way that is perhaps better: __15__.For example, taking care of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease.__16__ and if you choose one of them for that purpose, you will serve in that work feeling a sense of purpose each day.
There are endless ways to do that. The point isn't how you serve the world but just serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose.__17__.
A.These are all great choices
B.Think about what you like to do
C.You can identify your purpose and work out how to get there
D.Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose
E.Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better
F.The sooner you complete the training requirements, the sooner you will make a living
G.If you choose a purposeful and enjoyable job, you're always further along than most people
