Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
As we enjoyed our trip in Paris, I noticed that the people we came across were helpful, kind and nice. One day, an employee from a burger place across the street from our hotel noticed my Cleveland Cavaliers cap. We struck up a conversation about basketball and he encouraged me to visit his establishment.
The next day we stopped there — a snack bar, and the guy that I talked to wasn't there. Overall, there was room for about a dozen people to eat in the place. The guy that was taking my order spoke a little English, just enough for me to understand. Midway through my attempt to place my order, he apologized that his English wasn't very good. I thought for a split second and responded “et mon francais est très mal!”
He froze for a moment and the look on his face was priceless. It was some combination (混合) of shock, surprise, being impressed and a little amusement. He shook my hand and said “okay, okay that's good!”
It was just a small connection with someone on the other side of the world, someone I'll probably never see again. But for that instant there was a cool connection between two people, both understanding that speaking other languages wasn't easy! Both appreciating each other's effort to communicate in a way that the other person would understand, no matter how bad our attempts were.
Later I found that my direct translation wasn't exactly what I intended. I didn't find that out until much later! I was attempting to say “and my French is very bad”, what came out instead was “and my French is very wrong”. That was so much better because I just proved my point even more without knowing it.
Perhaps the best part of the story is that the burger that I got was the best burger that I've ever had in my life! I still dream about that burger and laugh every time I think about going to that burger spot.

Eight years ago, Al Nixon decided to begin each day from a bench with a spectacular view of St.Petersburg's waterfront in Florida.“I call it ‘life rising’ because watching a sunrise makes me feel positive and centered before I start my day,” says Nixon, who works for the city's water department. It is Nixon's own version of daily motivation.
A year later, a woman stopped to say hello, and she said something that changed his perspective on his daily ritual.“She said, ‘You know, every morning when I see you sitting here, I know that everything is going to be OK,’” Nixon recalls.“That was when I knew: I needed to pay attention to the people walking past.I needed to make eye contact and let people know that we matter to each other.”
Instead of staring straight ahead at the waterfront, Nixon started smiling at people and striking up conversations. And pretty soon, more than a few early risers began joining him on the bench, sometimes unburdening themselves and telling him their relationship, career or personal problems.“I was happy to listen.I wanted them to walk away knowing they didn't have to feel lonely,” Nixon, now 59, says.“When you're in your 50s and 60s or beyond, a lot of people feel their purpose hasn't been fulfilled. At this stage in life, this is definitely my purpose.”
So, every morning, weather permitting, Nixon rises at 4:30 a.m.He puts on a hat, sips a cup of coffee, and then drives seven miles to the waterfront, where he'll stay for two hours. His presence, his openness to listen and his kindness towards strangers have led them to nickname him the Sunshine Mayor.
No matter what problem a person wants to air, Nixon lends an ear.But some people just sit down and don't want to talk or share stories. They simply want to sit next to someone and share the silence.“A woman stopped once and said, ‘I just want to sit here with you,’” Nixon recalls.“We stared at the water for an hour, and then she said thank you and walked away. She just wanted a moment of peace and to know she wasn't alone. And in that moment, in that hour, on that morning, she truly wasn't.”

The Scottish composer Evelyn Glennie lost nearly all her hearing as a young girl, yet went on to a very successful career in music including winning Grammy awards. When somebody asks her, “How do you hear?” She responds, “How do you hear? Is it only with your ears?” For Glennie, and for us too, listening is not only hearing, but is understanding. We need to listen to what is said and unsaid, and also how it is said.
It's important to hear what people say accurately. As Mark Twain said,“The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and the lightning bug (萤火虫).” If you miss something or you're not sure you've heard accurately, ask the speakers. At this point you're not evaluating what they say, but just looking for accuracy and understanding. Here are some ways to get clear about what they say and don't say.Why are they saying this now, instead of sooner or later? Why are they emphasizing these points, instead of something else?
Listen to how it is said.People send signals about what they mean with their voices and body language that sometimes differ from the words they say. While going through the next points, think about someone whose real meaning you might sometimes miss, and see if any of these signals might come up.First, voices. When others speak, notice changes in their volume, pace, and tone.Second, body language.Notice gestures, eye contact, and facial expressions.Do these sync what they are saying, or do they tell a different story? Third, emotions. What is the person apparently feeling? Now you might not know for sure, but be considerate, open to understanding, and ask thoughtful questions.

10.What can we learn from what Mark Twain said?
A.It is important to have a good knowledge of English words.
B.People should know words can be used in many different ways.
C.English is a very complicated language with a large vocabulary.
D.The slight difference between words may result in misunderstanding.
解析:选D 推理判断题。根据第二段中的“It's important to hear what people say accurately.”和“At this point you're not evaluating what they say, but just looking for accuracy and understanding.”可知,准确听懂说话者的意思很重要。因此,D项“词语的细微差异可能导致误解”与Mark Twain所说的话意思相吻合。
