Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): Key Insights and Data
In September and October 2022, the EdWeek Research Center surveyed 824 teachers, principals, and district leaders to learn more about their perspectives on SEL today. Drawing on results from the nationally representative survey, this spotlight report sums up the current landscape.
Funding for SEL
Most principals and district leaders expect funding for SEL to change. The table below shows their varied views.
SEL Funding Expectations: Principals & District Leaders
Educators’ social and emotional well-being matters.
Those with strong social-emotional competence can better manage stress, build relationships and model SEL for students. Emerging evidence indicates that promoting teacher well-being reduces stress and anxiety. And by addressing their own social emotional well-being first, teachers are more successful in impacting the social and emotional well-being of their students, changing school cultures for the better.
Time/bandwidth (带宽) restrictions are the main challenges educators have with SEL.
When asked about the major challenges they or the teachers in their districts face with respect to SEL, some say that the effort spent helping students catch up academically leaves limited bandwidth for social-emotional learning while some others point to insufficient professional development. The figures are listed in the following chart.
Major Challenges
In conclusion, while there is strong recognition of the value of Social-Emotional Learning and a clear desire for increased investment, its effective implementation faces a significant barrier. The future of SEL depends not only on funding and intent but also on strategically addressing these.
21. What percentage of educators support more investment in SEL?
A. 61%. B. 21%.
C. 46%. D. 37%.
22. Why is it important to promote educators’ social and emotional well-being?
A. Because it greatly reduces their financial burden.
B. Because it teaches them to deal with emergencies.
C. Because it allows for a better campus atmosphere.
D. Because it makes them more successful educators.
23. Which of the following factors serves as the primary challenge facing educators?
A. Limited teaching capacity.
B. Insufficient time and energy.
C. Too much parental pushback.
D. Lack of professional knowledge.
B
Lindsey Vonn concluded her comeback (复出) season at age 40 with a second-place finish in a World Cup super-G race on March 23, 2025 that was won by Swiss standout Lara Gut-Behrami.
Vonn found her top form while flying down the twisting and steep Challenger course at the World Cup finals. The American pumped her ski poles after glancing at the scoreboard as the large crowd roared.
This was Vonn’s first World Cup podium (领奖台) spot since March 15, 2018, when she finished third in a super-G in Are, Sweden. Vonn came out of retirement during the 2024-2025 season after a partial knee replacement.
“As much as I love skiing, it’s been a hard road,” Vonn said after the race. “I just continue to prove that anything is possible. I’ve been knocked down so many times in my life, personally, physically, and mentally, but I always pick myself back up. It’s not always easy. It’s actually really hard work. But that’s what it takes, putting one foot in front of the other and getting through the hard days. When you keep putting one foot in front of the other, it leads you to a place like today.”
Vonn becomes the oldest female Alpine ski racer to step on the podium of a World Cup race — by six years. It was Vonn’s 138th career World Cup podium in her 408th World Cup start. She is within one start of tying the record for the most starts by a female racer, a mark held by Renate Goetschl of Austria.
The super-G title is awarded to the racer with the most points over the entire season. Before this final race, Gut-Behrami trailed by five points. Gut-Behrami finished in a time of 1 minute, 12.35 seconds — edging Vonn by 1.29 seconds — to earn the season-long super-G crystal globe by overtaking Brignone. Gut-Behrami found plenty of speed and took some calculated risks to glide through the course. Brignone finished third, 1.33 seconds behind Gut-Behrami.
24. What happened to Vonn before her 2025 World Cup return?
A. She piloted a plane.
B. She lost her ski poles.
C. She settled in Sweden.
D. She had a knee surgery.
25. Why were Vonn’s words cited in Paragraph 4?
A. To say she loves skiing most.
B. To explain the hard road of skiing.
C. To tell how she was knocked down.
D. To show her effort behind the success.
26. What do the underlined words “trailed by” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Was worried about. B. Fell behind.
C. Was chased by. D. Caught up with.
27. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Gut-Behrami’s Glorious Victory
B. Alpine Skiing: A Competitive Sport
C. The Intense World Cup Super-G Race
D. Vonn: Oldest Alpine Podium, Ends Comeback

Poetry is maybe the most human of all human attempts. One would think this is one of the very few fields that artificial intelligence (AI) could not take over. But according to a recent study, this is not so, as non-experts rate AI poetry higher than poetry written by humans.
And not just any humans. The researchers chose 10 famous poets: Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare..., spanning (跨越) over 800 years. They then asked ChatGPT to write poems in the style of each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts, to rate the work on 14 scales, like depth, rhythm, originality, imagery, beauty, emotion, and overall quality.
What was very surprising indeed is that most of these non-experts, when they were not told whether a poem was composed by AI or by a human, systematically ranked the ones that were actually written by AI higher than the ones written by humans. But what does this experiment show exactly? The research team’s own explanation has to do with participants’ lack of expertise, concluding that these non-experts preferred the AI poetry because it was less confusing, less complicated, and more straightforward.
This must be part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. Take wine-tasting. It was first reported that non-experts are very bad at making the simplest distinctions between wines, but shortly afterwards it was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes (and sometimes they in fact make more mistakes).
Things are indeed more complicated. This experiment was about rating: how participants rated various poems on a scale from 1 to 7 on various counts. It was about participants’ self-reports about their experiences, and as we know from thousands of studies, self-reports can be unreliable and lead to wrong conclusions in many situations. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic (美学的) experience of poetry, but what participants thought about their aesthetic experience.
The study is important and creative. But it doesn’t show that emerging poets should abandon their passion. Not yet, anyway.
28. Which aspect of the experiment does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The process. B. The subjects.
C. The preparations. D. The rating standards.
29. What does the finding reveal?
A. Poetry quality depends on expertise.
B. AI poetry is easier to understand.
C. People much prefer original poems.
D. AI can hardly replace human poets.
30. Why is wine-tasting mentioned?
A. To support the author’s opinion.
B. To prove researchers’ explanation.
C. To compare the similarity of the cases.
D. To show the difficulty of poetry appreciation.
31. What is probably a major limitation of the study?
A. Its design lacked creativity.
B. It centered only on famous poets.
C. It referred to misleading self-reports.
D. Its sample size was relatively small.
D
Why move to a city? And why leave? Urban centers today see this for many reasons — the economy, crowds, lifestyle considerations, air quality, and some odd diseases perhaps.
The earliest cities worldwide were born of country folk. Farmers were reliant on land-extensive economies, which encouraged them to live and spread out across the landscape in small settlements, to minimize the travel time and costs between their residences and farm plots.
Then as now, though, city living was more expensive in all the ways: greater chance of crowd diseases, more competition for resources, and rising levels of systemic inequality. And astonishingly, farmers still chose to bear these costs. What happened? That question has been the source of a long-standing debate, according to Douglas Kennett, who has conducted extensive research into urbanization in Classic Maya cities.
“We determined that the rise and expansion of Classic Maya cities resulted from the interaction of climate downturns, intergroup conflict, and the presence of strong economies of scale realized through capital investments in agricultural systems,” Kennett says. Using that same framework, Kennett and other researchers also determined that deurbanization set in “when the benefits of urban living no longer outweighed the costs, as environments were degraded (恶化) in cities and better climate improved the livability of rural areas where people would have more freedom and autonomy”.
Indeed, the team’s initial interest was centered on the role of climate change in the decline of Classic Maya cities. “We also capitalized on major developments in computational modeling,” Kennett says. “The biggest surprise for me was that the abandonment of cities occurred under improving climatic conditions. We have long thought that the decline of Classic Maya cities partially resulted from an extended period of drought. It turns out to be a much more complicated and interesting story.”
All told, the new work offers critical insights for understanding and managing contemporary and future urban evolution by establishing timeless, universal principles about how populations concentrate and spread out.
32. Why did early farmers live in small settlements?
A. To escape from disasters and diseases. B. To enjoy a comfortable urban lifestyle.
C. To boost the development of economies. D. To manage agricultural work efficiently.
33. What puzzle is presented about early city life in paragraph 3?
A. Farmers were forced to move into cities. B. Cities failed to offer proper accommodations.
C. Farmers willingly faced urban challenges. D. Rural life was more expensive than urban life.
34. What caused the decline of Classic Maya cities according to Kennett?
A. The long period of water shortage. B. The increased appeal of rural life.
C. The limitation to residents’ freedom. D. The collapse of agricultural systems.
35. What is the significance of the new research?
A. It clarifies Classic Maya cities’ history. B. It proves climate’s role in urban decline.
C. It offers general rules for urban evolution. D. It develops a computational modeling way.

For nearly a year, 91-year-old Donald, a former US soldier, had been frequently visiting US Gold & Pawn (典当) in Manchester, New Hampshire, unwillingly selling off pieces of his wife’s cherished jewelry bit by bit. Each visit felt heavier than the last, as though he were parting with fragments of their shared life. Each time, he would politely ask for a slightly higher price, his eyes reflecting a mixture of hope and helplessness. There was a quiet dignity in his posture, a sense of duty that never wavered, even as he handed over another treasure from their past.
Janelle Marie, a warm-hearted employee at the shop, noticed his repeated visits and grew increasingly concerned. She began to recognize his face, the same worn coat, the hesitant steps, the careful way he unwrapped each item. She sensed something unusual behind his quiet behavior. One afternoon, she approached him gently and asked, “Sir, is everything okay? You’ve been coming here often. Can we help in any other way?” Moved by her kindness, Donald opened up. His wife was battling against a severe illness that demanded his constant care. To make matters worse, their landlord (房东) had recently raised the rent, worsening their financial situation.
It turned out Donald had already sold almost everything of value in their home — including a 1994 Mercedes he had gifted his wife on their 40th anniversary, a cherished symbol of their long marriage. They had no children, no close relatives, and no one to turn to for support, leaving him overwhelmed by loneliness and responsibility. He felt utterly alone in the struggle to protect his wife and save their home, facing each day with quiet desperation.
Deeply touched by his story, Janelle made up her mind to help. She first convinced the shop owner, Bob, to extend the loan period and reduce the service fee, which was instantly agreed by the gentleman. But realizing that wasn’t sufficient, they decided to take it a step further.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Hi, everyone! Today I’ll talk about my journey with time management tools. For over ten years, I used paper planners. I loved making lists and crossing off tasks —it felt like completing something great! I also wrote down weekly goals and special memories. But I always faced the same problem: I couldn’t have my planner with me when I needed it. So I switched to digital calendars. They were obtainable anywhere, and I never missed a plan.
However, I soon realized something was wrong. I felt stressful and passive. After self-reflection, I found that I’d stopped setting clear goals and struggled to put tasks in order of importance on a small screen. And I might miss important tasks like buying a birthday gift because I couldn’t see the full week clearly.
Then, I discovered a solution, combining the two approaches. I started using a paper planner alongside my digital calendar. This allowed me to write down goals and plan ahead better. Now, I feel more organized than ever. And I’ll just keep that going.

D 25. D 26. B 27. D

根据第三段中的“Vonn came out of retirement during the 2024-2025 season after a partial knee replacement.(在接受部分膝关节置换手术后,沃恩在2024-2025赛季复出)”可知,沃恩在2025年世界杯回归前接受了膝关节手术。
根据第四段中的“As much as I love skiing, it’s been a hard road,” Vonn said after the race. “I just continue to prove that anything is possible. I’ve been knocked down so many times in my life, personally, physically, and mentally, but I always pick myself back up. It’s not always easy. It’s actually really hard work. But that’s what it takes, putting one foot in front of the other and getting through the hard days. When you keep putting one foot in front of the other, it leads you to a place like today.(“虽然我很爱滑雪,但这条路很艰难,”沃恩赛后说。“我只是继续证明一切皆有可能。在我的一生中,无论是个人、身体还是精神上,我被击倒过很多次,但我总是重新站起来。这并不总是容易的。实际上这是非常艰难的工作。但这就是所需要的,一步一步地往前走,度过艰难的日子。当你一直一步一步往前走,就会走到今天这样的境地。”)”可知,引用沃恩的话是为了展示她成功背后付出的努力。故选D项。
【26题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“The super-G title is awarded to the racer with the most points over the entire season. Before this final race, Gut-Behrami trailed by five points. Gut-Behrami finished in a time of 1 minute, 12.35 seconds — edging Vonn by 1.29 seconds — to earn the season-long super-G crystal globe by overtaking Brignone.(超级大回转冠军授予整个赛季积分最多的选手。
C
A 29. B 30. A 31. C

根据第二段中的“The researchers chose 10 famous poets: Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare..., spanning (跨越) over 800 years. They then asked ChatGPT to write poems in the style of each poet. And they asked the participants, who were not experts, to rate the work on 14 scales, like depth, rhythm, originality, imagery, beauty, emotion, and overall quality.(研究人员选择了10位著名诗人:杰弗里·乔叟、威廉·莎士比亚……跨越了800多年。然后他们让ChatGPT模仿每位诗人的风格写诗。他们还让非专业的参与者从14个维度对作品进行评分,比如深度、节奏、原创性、意象、美感、情感和整体质量)”可知,第二段主要讲述了实验的具体过程。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“The research team’s own explanation has to do with participants’ lack of expertise, concluding that these non-experts preferred the AI poetry because it was less confusing, less complicated, and more straightforward.(研究团队自己的解释与参与者缺乏专业知识有关,他们得出结论,这些非专家更喜欢AI诗歌,因为它不那么令人困惑、不那么复杂,而且更直白)”可知,该发现表明AI诗歌更容易被理解。
根据第四段中的“This must be part of the story, but it’s not the whole story. Take wine-tasting. It was first reported that non-experts are very bad at making the simplest distinctions between wines, but shortly afterwards it was found that experts make the same kind of mistakes (and sometimes they in fact make more mistakes).(这一定是部分原因,但不是全部。以品酒为例。最初有报道称,非专家很难区分最简单的葡萄酒,但不久之后发现,专家也会犯同样的错误(有时他们实际上犯的错误更多))”可知,作者提到品酒是为了支持自己的观点——研究团队的解释只是部分原因,事情更复杂,并非只有非专家会有这样的判断偏差。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“It was about participants’ self-reports about their experiences, and as we know from thousands of studies, self-reports can be unreliable and lead to wrong conclusions in many situations. So this experiment was not about the real aesthetic (美学的) experience of poetry, but what participants thought about their aesthetic experience.(它关注的是参与者对自己体验的自我报告,而我们从数千项研究中得知,自我报告在许多情况下是不可靠的,会导致错误的结论。因此,这个实验关注的不是诗歌真正的美学体验,而是参与者对自己美学体验的看法)”可知,该研究的一个主要局限是它参考了具有误导性的自我报告。故选C项。
D 33. C 34. B 35. C

根据第二段中“Farmers were reliant on land-extensive economies, which encouraged them to live and spread out across the landscape in small settlements, to minimize the travel time and costs between their residences and farm plots.(农民依赖的是大规模的土地经济模式,这种模式促使他们分散居住在广阔地域内的小型定居点,以减少居住地与农田之间的往返时间和成本)”可知,早期农民住在小型定居点是为了缩短住所与农田之间的出行时间、降低成本,本质是为了更高效地打理农活,故选D。
根据第三段中“Then as now, though, city living was more expensive in all the ways: greater chance of crowd diseases, more competition for resources, and rising levels of systemic inequality. And astonishingly, farmers still chose to bear these costs. What happened?(尽管如今的情况依旧如此,但城市生活在各个方面都更加昂贵:更容易传播群体性疾病、对资源的竞争更激烈、社会不平等程度也在不断上升。而令人惊讶的是,农民仍然选择承受这些代价。发生了什么?)”可知,城市生活成本更高、更容易爆发传染病、资源竞争更激烈、不平等问题更严重,但农民依然主动选择承担这些成本进入城市,故选C。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Using that same framework, Kennett and other researchers also determined that deurbanization set in “when the benefits of urban living no longer outweighed the costs, as environments were degraded (恶化) in cities and better climate improved the livability of rural areas where people would have more freedom and autonomy”.(基于同样的理论框架,Kennett和其他研究人员还确定,当“城市生活的益处不再超过其成本,因为城市环境恶化,而更好的气候改善了农村地区的宜居性(使人们能拥有更多的自由和自主权)”时,城市化进程就会逆转)”可知,玛雅城市衰落的原因是城市环境恶化,同时气候改善提升了农村的宜居性,农村能给人们更多自由自主权,也就是农村吸引力上升了。
根据最后一段“All told, the new work offers critical insights for understanding and managing contemporary and future urban evolution by establishing timeless, universal principles about how populations concentrate and spread out.(总的来说,这项新研究通过确立关于人口如何聚集和分散的永恒、普遍原则,为理解并管理当代及未来的城市发展提供了关键性的见解)”可知,这项新研究建立了关于人口聚集与分散的永恒普遍原则,为理解和处理当代、未来的城市发展提供了关键思路,对应C选项“为城市演化提供了通用规律”,故选C。

句子主语the “Zhiyin Hubei, Majestic Yangtze” tourism promotion event与hold(举行)之间是被动关系,且根据时间状语on September 5th, 2025可知,应用一般过去时的被动语态,其结构为“was/were +过去分词”,主语是单数,所以用was held。故填was held。
故填as。
故填most influential。
此处连接the launch of direct tailored flights和the signing of cooperation agreements,这两个部分是并列关系,应用连词and。故填and。
故填What。
故填a。
故填will become。

Dear John,
I’m delighted to learn that you are seeking suggestions to make our classes more interesting. I’d like to recommend including interactive activities like group debates and role-plays related to our lesson topics.
There are several reasons for this tip. First, such activities create a lively and engaging classroom atmosphere, which naturally boosts our motivation to participate. Second, from a learning perspective, they allow us to apply language in practical, real-life contexts, helping improve our communication skills and speaking fluency. Finally, collaborative tasks can reduce anxiety about speaking and promote teamwork among students.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Together with Bob, Janelle launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Donald.

Paragraph 2:
Janelle took out the donation money, put it in an envelope and handed it to Donald.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Together with Bob, Janelle launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Donald. She wove together the threads of their story: his wife’s illness diagnosis, their decades of companionship, and the hardships of selling precious items to make ends meet etc. She also recorded a short video in which Donald was taking care of his wife with meticulous care and attention. Once the campaign went live, it spread like wildfire. Netizens passed the story from screen to screen, and even local hospitals stepped forward to cut their medical charges. In merely a week, the donations soared far beyond their goal — enough to cover the rent, the ongoing treatments, and even a little more for the hard days ahead.
Paragraph 2:
Janelle took out the donation money, put it in an envelope and handed it to Donald. Staring at the envelope, Donald froze for a few seconds, then tremblingly opened it. “I…I don’t know how to thank you,” he said, “You save my wife’s life and our home,” Donald sobbed to Janelle and Bob. He had thought there would be no one to turn to and he was totally alone. Janelle told him it was himself that he should thank, who had been holding on for so long and that was what made others follow the example.

Today i'll talk about my journey with time management tools. For over ten years, I used paper planners. I loved making lists and crossing off tasks. IT felt like completing something great. I also wrote down weekly goals and special memories, but I always faced the same problem. I couldn't have my planner with me when I needed IT. So I switch to digital calendars. They were obtainable anywhere, and I never missed a plan. However, I soon realized something was wrong. I felt stressful and passive. After self reflection, I found that i'd stop setting clear goals and struggle to put tasks in order of importance on a small screen, and I might miss important tasks like buying a birthday gift because I couldn't see the full week clearly. Then I discovered a solution combining the two approaches. I started using a paper plan or alongside my digital calendar. This allowed me to write down goals and plan ahead Better. Now I feel more organize than ever, and i'll just keep that going. Hi everyone. Today i'll talk about my journey with time management tools. For over ten years, I used paper planners.
